DO NOT say "you're welcome"! Respond to "thank you" PROPERLY!

Today, I am going to be teaching you

اليوم, راح اعلمكم

all of the ways that you can respond to thank you.

كل الطرق الي بيهة تگدرون تردون بيهة على thank you

Now you're welcome or you are welcome

هسة you're welcome او you are welcome

is a perfectly valid way to respond to a thank you.

طريقة صحيحة تگدر ترد بيهة على thank you

But I think it's a little bit overused,

بس اني اعتقد انهة شوية مبتذلة

especially by learners of English.

خصوصا من الي يتعلمون انگليزي

It's completely natural.

You find one way you like to say things

هوة طبيعي كلش

انك تلگة طريقة تعجبك حتة تگول بيهة شي

and then you say it again, and again, and again.

هدور راح تگولهة مرة وثنين و تلاثة

The purpose of this video is to expand your vocabulary bank,

فايدة هذة الفيديو هو انه يوسع خزين الكلمات الي تعرفهة

so that you have many more options when somebody thanks you.

حتة خيارتك متكون محدودة من واحد يگلك thank you

So this video is going to be perfect

وهچي راح يكون هذة الفيديو مفيد

for improving your vocabulary.

لتحسين خزين الكلمات الي تعرفهة

But if you want to improve your listening

واذا تردون الاصغاء عدكم

and your pronunciation even further,

واللفظ يصير احسن

than I highly recommend listening to audio books.

فاني انصحكم كلش انه تسمعون كتب الصوتية

It's something I mention in a lot of my videos,

وهذة شي هواي اذكرة بفيديواتي

but I mention it a lot because I know it works.

واذكرة هواي لأنه يجيب نتيجة

I advise you to take a book that you already have,

انصحكم تاخذون كتاب عدكم

a book that you've maybe already read

يعني مثلا كتاب قاريه گبل

and download the audio version

وتحملون نسخته الصوتية

and listen to it whilst you are reading.

وتسمعوه و انتو تقروه

Just reading alone will not help you with your pronunciation

اذا بس قراية وحدهة ما راح تفيدكم باللفظ

because English is not a phonetic language.

لأن الانگليزي مو لغة صوتية

If you are hearing the word as you read it,

اذا تسمعون الكلمة وانتو جاي تقروهة

your brain will make the connection,

راح دماغكم يسوي ربط

and next time you see that word,

ولمن تشوفون الكلمة مرة ثانية

you will know how to pronounce it.

راح تعرفون شلون تلفظوهة

And next time you hear that word,

ولمن تسمعون الكلمة بعد مرة

you will know how it's spelt.

راح تعرفون املائهة

Right, let's get started with the lesson.

يلة, خلينة نبدي بالدرس

Let's begin with informal or casual phrases

خلونة نبدي بالغير رسميات ذني الكاجول

that you can use with your friends and family.

الي تستعملوهن وية اصدقائكم واهلكم

The first one is, you're welcome.

الاولة you're welcome

But let's expand on that a little bit.

بس خلونة نكبرهة شوية

If you really want to emphasise

اذاتريد تبين صدگ

that their thanks has been taken into consideration,

انه شكرهم خذته بعين الاعتبار

you can say, you're very welcome.

تگدر تگول you're very welcome

This is quite a British one, I think,

هذي شوية بريطانية حسب ما اعتقد

for example, thank you so much

على سبيل المثال thank you so much

for packing my shopping for me.

for packing my shopping for me

Oh, you're very welcome.

Oh, you're very welcome

Number two, this one is slightly more American.

رقم اثنين, هاي شوية امريكية اكثر

It's, no problem,

هية no problem

no problem.

لا مشكلة

Bear in mind that the older generation

خلي ابالك هاي الجيل القديم

seem to dislike this one.

يبين عليه يكرهة

So keep that in your head

خليهة ابالك

if a slightly older person is thanking you.

خاف تريد تحجي وية واحد شوي چبير

An example, thanks for the help today.

مثلا thanks for the help today

No problem, I enjoyed helping you.

No problem, I enjoyed helping you

Number three, the third way to respond to thank you

رقم تلاثة, وثالث طريقة حتة ترد بيهة

is, thank you. (laughs)

هي thank you هههه

But this one is all about the emphasis.

هذي كل غرضهة هو الامتنان

If somebody thanks you but you think

يعني اذا واحد شكرك بس انت تعتقد

that they should be thanked, you can say, no, thank you.

انه هوة لازم ينشكر تگدر تگول no, thank you

Or just, thank you.

او بس thank you

For example, thanks for accepting the invitation.

مثلا, thanks for accepting the invitation

Thank you.

Thank you

I'm emphasising that really, I should be thanking them

اني ممنون كلش ولازم اشكره

because they invited me somewhere.

لانه دعاني لمكان

Number four, this one is much more formal.

رقم اربعة, هاي شوية رسمية اكثر

If we say it in its entire form it's, the pleasure is mine.

اذا گلناهة كاملة the pleasure is mine

The pleasure is mine.

لي الشرف

You can also shorten it to make it less formal

تگدر تختصرهة و تقلل رسميتهة

by saying, my pleasure, or simply, pleasure,

وتگول my pleasure او pleasure

that's very casual.

هاي مو رسمية

For example, thanks for taking the parcel in for me.

مثلا, thanks for taking the parcel in for me

Pleasure.

Pleasure بكل سرور

That's a short way of saying it was my pleasure,

طريقة مختصرة حتة تگول it is my pleasure

or the pleasure is mine, or was mine.

او the pleasure is mine او was mine

Number five is a very friendly one.

رقم خمسة, بيهة ميانة زايدة

Only use this with people you know well.

استعملوهة وية الناس اللي تعرفوهم بس

It's, I know you'd do the same for me.

هية I know you'd do the same for me

For example, I'd like to thank you

مثلا I'd like to thank you

for looking after my cat so well.

for looking after my cat so well

The response, I know you'd do the same for me.

الجواب I know you'd do the same for me

I know you'd look after my cat, so I looked after yours.

ادري بيك راح تداري بزونتي لهل سبب داريت مالتك

Even Stevens.

وحدة بوحدة

Number six is much more casual.

رقم ستة هاي مو رسمة بعد اكثر

And it's slightly less heartfelt.

وشوية مو من الگلب

You might say this if you don't really care,

تگولهة من ما مهتم من صدگ

or if somebody is thanking you for doing something

او لمن واحد يشكرك على شي

that you might not have wanted to do.

انتة ما جنت تريد تسويه

But depending on the intonation and the tone of voice,

بس تعتمد على التعبير و النبرة

it can also be quite warm.

وممكن تصير شوي بيهة اهتمام

It's, that's all right.

هية that's all right

So I could say, thank you for picking me up

مثلا thank you for picking me up

from the station.

from the station

I could say either, that's all right.

اگدر اگول اما that's all right

Or, that's all right.

او that's all right

My tone of voice is telling you

ونبرة صوتي راح تگللكم

everything you need to know there.

الاقصدة بوقتهة

Number seven is a very casual one.

رقم سبعة هاذي كلش مو رسمية

It's, no worries, no worries.

هية no worries لا تقلق

In use, thanks for letting me know

مثلا thanks for letting me know

that my car alarm was going off.

that my car alarm was going off

No worries, I thought I'd better tell you.

No worries شفت لازم اگلك

The next one is very British.

الوراهة كلش بريطانية

It's quite self-deprecating.

شوية بيهة تواضع

It's, don't mention it.

هية don't mention it

For example, thank you so much for bringing the desert.

مثلا thank you so much for bringing the desert

Oh, don't mention it.

Oh, don't mention it

It was a lot of effort to bring dessert probably.

هوة يمكن جيبة التحلية بيهة تعب

And they probably do want you to mention it,

ويمكن اريدك تذكر هل الشي

but we just say, don't mention it

بس نگول , لاتقلها

because, oh, it was nothing.

لأنه اوو ولة شي

Number nine is very heartfelt.

رقم تسعة طالعة من الگلب كلش

It is, it was the least I could do.

هية it was the least I could do

For example, thank you for visiting me in hospital.

مثلا thank you for visiting me in hospital

Oh, it was the least I could do.

Oh, it was the least I could do

Again, very British, very self-deprecating.

ومرة ثانية ,بريطانية كلش ومتواضعة كلش

Number 10 is quite casual.

رقم عشرة شوية مو رسمية

It's, anytime.

هية anytime

Thank you for stopping by, oh, anytime.

Thank you for stopping by, oh, anytime

It's quite a generous response, I like this one.

هذة رد شوي سخي تعجبني هاية

Number 11 is a really American one.

رقم دعش هاي امريكية

I hardly ever hear it used in the UK.

وصعب تسمع يستعملوهة ببريطانية

But I thought I should teach it to you

بس اني شفت لازم اعلمكم اياهة

because British English is not the only English,

لان البريطانية مو هية اللهجة الانگليزية الوحيدة

it's good to know about all of the different slang phrases.

وكلش حلو انك تعرف كل عبارات اللهجات المختلفة

And yes, this is a very casual one, it is, sure.

و اي اكيد هاي كلش مو رسمية

A one word answer to say you're welcome.

كلمة وحدة حتة ترد وتگول على الرحب و السعة

Thank you for thinking of me, sure.

Thank you for thinking of me, sure

It often goes hand in hand with no problem.

تتماشة اغلب الاحيان وية no problem

Sure, no problem.

sure, no prpblem بالتأكيد لا مشكلة.

Number 12 is, oh, it was nothing.

رقم ثنعش

Again, another self-deprecating one.

ومرة ثانية هاي همين متواضعة

It's a way of saying that what they are thanking you for

وطريقة حتة تگول ان الشغلة الي جاي يشكروك عليهة

was no extra effort.

چانت بدون تعب اضافي

Thank you for picking my kids up from school.

Thank you for picking my kids up from school

Oh, it was nothing, my kids already needed picking up.

Oh, it was nothing, my kids already needed picking up

No extra effort here.

ماكو اي تعب اضافي

Now I want to talk to you about four

وهسة اريد اگللكم عن اربعة

more formal ways of responding to thank you.

طرق رسمية اكثر حتة تردون بيهة على thank you

And these are more likely to be used in business situations,

وهذني اغلب الاحيان يستخدمن بالحالات التجارية

or maybe in a shop or restaurant.

او يمكن بالمحل او المطعم

Number one is very British, it's quite old fashioned,

رقم واحد بريطانية كلش وشوية عتيگة

and it is, much obliged.

هية much obliged

The full formal way of saying it is,

وشكلهة الرسمي كلشي هو

I'm very much obliged to you.

I'm very much obliged to you

For example, thank you so much doctor,

مثلا thank you so much doctor

I'm very much obliged to you.

I'm very much obliged to you

This is shortened down to, I actually experienced this one

طبعا اني سمعت هاي

in use the other day at a shoe shop.

بمحل احذية فد يوم من الايام

I said, thank you so much after paying

وگلت thank you so much ورة ما دفعت الحساب

and he said, "Much obliged."

وهوة گال Much obliged

And I thought, oh, I haven't heard that phrase in a while,

گلت هاي صارلي هواي ما سامعتهة

I'm gonna put it in a video.

وراح اخليهة بفيديو

The guy had an amazing Cockney accent as well,

وهذة الرجال چانت عنده لهجة شرق لندن كلش حلوة

he was really nice, really helpful.

چان كلش حباب و يساعد

Great shoes, they had a gel bottom.

خوش احذية و جان بيهة گاعية مرنة

Number two is a more formal way of saying you're welcome

رقم ثنين, طريقة رسمة اكثر حتة تگول you're welcome

it is, you're most welcome.

هية you're most welcome

Now, this does sound very posh.

هاي تبين كلش مرتبة

So I wouldn't use it willy-nilly,

يعني لازم ما استعملهة شلون ما چان

willy-nilly means without careful thought, or planning.

willy-nilly تعني بدون اهتمام او تخطيط

I wouldn't use it willy-nilly.

ما راح استخدمهة شلون ما چان

But if you're in a formal situation,

بس اذا انتة بموقف رسمي

for example, I thanked my solicitor

مثلا I thanked my solicitor

on the phone the other day for sending me some forms.

And she replied with, you're most welcome

وهية وردت بـ you're most welcome

because she's quite a formal person,

لانهة شوية رسمية حبتين

and it was a formal legal situation.

وچانت الشغلة رسمية قانونية

Number three is, we appreciate your business

رقم تلاثة we appreciate your business

or we appreciate your custom.

أوwe appreciate your custom

Custom if you're talking to a customer

Custom اذا جاي تحچي وية زبون

and business if you're talking to a business client.

business اذا جاي تحچي وية تاجر

For example, thank you for sending the sample so promptly.

مثلا thank you for sending the sample so promptly

We appreciate your business.

We appreciate your business

And the last one, definitely a business one,

والاخيرة اكيد تجارية

it's, I'm happy to help.

هية I'm happy to help

For example, thank you for helping me carry the coffees

مثلا thank you for helping me carry the coffees

to the office.

to the office

Oh, I'm happy to help.

Oh, I'm happy to help
