We often think of certain animals at this time of year.

As spring arrives and then summer approaches, we think of all sorts of animals rabbits.

And then, of course, we have baby chicks as well.

Quite often this time of year, what happens is many animals are born.

Many animals come into the world and say hello for the first time, including

lambs.

Of course, lots of sheep around here are now having lambs, so we often think of Easter as a time of

birth.

Rebirth perhaps.

And you might say that it is sort of connected to the festival of Easter as well.

I would imagine that would be accurate.

I don't think it is a mistake.

Oh, talking of which, today we are looking at mistakes.

There are many ways of using the word mistake.

Also,

is it a bad thing to ask for help?

Some people are very proud in their lives.

They have a personality that is proud.

That means quite often they will not ask for help.

However bad the situation is, they will not ask for help.

This does happen quite a lot.

Some people are quite proud and especially older people.

Maybe if you are elderly, you might be proud.

You might want to keep your dignity by not asking for help.

However, some people believe that if you do have a problem, if you are having some sort of difficulty, then you should ask for help.

It is something that is a good thing to do,

so we will be looking at that a little bit later on.

I don't know if you've heard the news, but in the British courts, I believe it is the Supreme Court here in the UK.

They have

brought into law the Gender Act.

Apparently big controversial thing, people who believe or feel that they were born in the wrong body.

Maybe they feel they are female when they are actually male, so maybe they want to become female and of course vice versa.

I've just realised

Time is going by very quickly.

You know I like words.

I love the English language so much and there are lots of interesting words

to be found in English, including this one that is on your screen right now.

The word is mistake.

Mistake.

An interesting word.

We often use this word when we have made some sort of error.

Or maybe we have got something wrong.

But Mr. Duncan, can you please give us the definition of this word?

Well, I will first of all, you can use it as a noun and also as a verb.

The naming word, the thing, the name of the thing, and also the doing word, which is the verb.

And also it can be modified as an adjective, as well.

The word mistake.

I will give you the definition, because I'm sure that is the reason why you are here today.

As a noun, an error in action, calculation, opinion or judgement caused by poor reasoning, carelessness

or insufficient knowledge is mistake.

The mistake is the thing you make as a noun.

So when we look at things that we've done or said that were done, but maybe we should not have done them,

or maybe we said something that we thought was correct, but in fact it is not correct.

You are wrong.

You've made a mistake as a noun, an error,

judgement, or maybe poor reasoning.

When we talk about reasoning, we are often talking about thinking.

So maybe the way you think or perhaps the conclusion that you come to about something.

So maybe you make a decision, some sort of decision.

You decide something, but you made the wrong choice.

Your reasoning is wrong.

It is a mistake.

So maybe you are careless.

Quite often we will make mistakes if we are careless.

A person who is careless is someone who is doing something without concentrating, without using all of their concentration.

Mistakes can happen especially when you are not concentrating.

We often refer to that as carelessness.

And of course, mistakes are moments

where you say something that is not right, it is inaccurate.

It is not right, it is not correct.

Sometimes a person with a little bit of knowledge in their brain might decide that they know everything.

They might make a mistake.

The mistake might be something they believe they know or they think is right.

But because their knowledge is only small, they only have a small amount of knowledge

about one particular thing, then they will often make a mistake.

And that is what we talk about when we talk about when we talk about making a mistake

as a noun, a mistake is the thing done

incorrectly, something that is incorrect is not accurate.

It is not right.

To do it incorrectly means the thing you have done

or the thing you are doing is being done incorrectly.

you sometimes find that I will make mistakes because I am only a human being.

Unfortunately.

To make a mistake is to get something wrong.

A thing said or done that is wrong or inaccurate.

Something inaccurate is a thing that is wrong.

Maybe you'll watch.

You might talk about your watch.

Perhaps your watch is telling the wrong time.

You might look at your watch and you think that is the real time, but it isn't because your watch is inaccurate.

And then you also are inaccurate because you are telling the time from your watch.

So to be mistaken, quite often we can use mistaken things said or done that is wrong or inaccurate.

Is mistaken

and we are using this as an adjective.

So mistaken.

Something mistaken is the form of a thing that is in the process of being done wrong.

Mistake can be the action of making a mistake.

So in this sense we are using it as a verb.

So as I said earlier, we can use the word mistake as a noun and a verb so you can mistake something as an action.

You might mistake one thing for something else.

Perhaps there are two things that exist that look very similar.

You might mistake one thing for something else because they look similar.

Mistake and the past participle is mistook.

You mistook something.

I mistook you for my next door neighbour.

I mistook my neighbour for you.

You look very similar to each other, you see.

So the word mistake has a lot of meanings to mistake one person for someone else.

This has happened a lot.

I have met people in the past, and then later I've seen that person in the street or from far away.

And I think,

I'm sure that is my friend from years ago.

It's a mistake, a mistake.

I mistake one thing for something else.

And of course, as the past tense mistake

So if you misinterpret something, it means you make a mistake in that particular action.

But you are wrong.

You misinterpret her glance.

You think there is something more happening than there is.

So we can always misinterpret something.

We get something wrong.

You might get

the thing wrong. You get it wrong.

Maybe you are trying to add up some numbers.

And this is the moment where I tell you I am terrible at mathematics.

So quite often I will make mistakes when I am trying to do maths,

especially in my head.

I am not very good at doing maths in my head,

so I often get it wrong when I am trying to work out some calculation using numbers, I will often make a mistake.

I will often get it wrong.

And then of course, if you mistake one thing for something else, we can say that you misidentify

something to misidentify something means to look and you guess that thing wrongly.

You make a mistake.

So it does happen quite often.

And as I always say, I've said it before and I have a feeling I will say it another million times.

Never be afraid to make mistakes.

We all make them.

To, is human, to forgive divine.

in the fact that you can give it.

You can ask for it, you can give help, you can receive help.

You might have to search for help.

Sometimes.

Some people are very willing to help.

Other people are not so willing. Unfortunately.

But we are lucky that in this world there are many people who will give help, including me.

By the way, I will give you help with your English if you don't mind.

Here we go then. We are looking at the word help.

That is what this is all leading up to.

We will have a look at the ways of using help.

I think it is a very human thing to give help.

The word help can be used in many ways as a verb

and also as a noun naming, and also in some phrases as well.

So there are some phrases that we use in English that also use help.

As a verb, the word help means to give or provide what is necessary

to accomplish a task or satisfy a need.

You give help.

You help that person.

So again, we are using it in a transitive way.

We are saying that that thing is being given. You are doing it.

It is a verb to give or provide what is necessary to accomplish a task or satisfy a need.

And I suppose really help is often needed.

When we have a problem, there is something we need to solve or sort out,

and you might need a person to help you

with that thing to give assistance in the form of joining in or providing a needed thing.

Again, as a verb, we are saying that you are helping them so that thing is actually happening.

Help is occurring.

You give assistance.

Again, another nice word assistance is the action of actually giving help

as a verb

to help with a task or help with obtaining something needed or required.

So maybe if you need something, maybe if you want help with something,

that person will help you, help you, you need it.

You help with a task or help with obtaining something needed or required.

And of course, there are many examples of that type of action.

Help is being done as an action,

as a verb,

I will help you.

I am offering that service.

Will you help me? Will you help me?

I help you with your English.

So you might say that thing is happening right now.

So as you watch me, I help you with your English

will help you.

Maybe if there are more people, maybe a crowd of people are agreeing to give you help will help you.

Help is something that is given as a service.

We have the use of help in real time.

You are helping.

So as you are doing that thing, we can say you are helping.

Helping again, we are showing that that thing is occurring, helping.

You can see that person over there helping that old lady off the bus.

As an adjective,

we can also say that someone is assisting another person.

You might find that someone is in the garden with Mr.

Steve. You might say he is in the garden helping Steve.

You can see that's where he is.

You can visualise that thing taking place as an adjective.

You are showing it is occurring and it is a statement of something happening.

You are giving assistance.

So I've already used this word today.

I know I have already used this word assistance is help.

You are giving assistance. You are helping.

You might ask a person to help you succeed.

Help is the thing you are asking for.

You want a person to help you.

Can you help me to pass my driving test?

You might ask a person to help you with a certain thing you wish to improve on.

Help is something that is given

as a way of helping a person

know something or know about something.

In this particular case, it is driving a car.

You can help someone in trouble or distress.

Maybe there is a person who is having difficulty in some sort of situation.

Please help me.

A call for help.

Someone might be needing assistance.

You call for help.

Help?

Or maybe you hear

So calling for help can be you doing it or another person doing it.

In that particular case, we are talking about a type of emergency.

Help is to assist during a difficult moment.

A moment of time where help is needed.

You might help pay off a debt.

Maybe a friend of yours owes some money. You will help them.

You help them to pay off

a debt.

You do that thing for a person.

You might ask someone please help me to lose weight.

You are asking for help or maybe you are asking for advice.

So don't forget, help can be anything that is

used as assistance to assist, to help.

So perhaps you have some good advice for your friend to help them lose weight.

Help comes in many different varieties.

A useful thing to be helped by someone.

It is nice.

It is nice to have a person who is close to you or nearby, maybe a friend or relative

who is willing to give you help or to help you.

Something that might help you to carry out a certain test or a certain job.

I will help me.

But will it? Will it really?

There is no substitute for a real human being.

I've said it already.

There is no substitute for humanity.

So maybe artificial intelligence will be useful for certain things, but not everything,

because you can't recreate the human spirit.

A useful gadget

can be something that helps.

It also can be a help.

It is something that is providing assistance.

It is a useful thing.

My smartphone will help me to find my way home because I'm lost

and it's dark

and I can't find my way back home.

My smartphone will help me to find my way back home,

so anything that gives you assistance, it doesn't have to be a person.

It can be anything. Anything whatsoever.

Something that gives you help.

As a noun, it is the action named.

So don't forget. In this sense we are using help as a noun.

The help given, the help needed, the help

offered so you can give help.

You might need help.

Or you can offer help.

Many ways of using that word

using different actions and type of actions give,

need, offer give is to

hand over something without wanting anything else

in response.

You don't want a reward, you just give something.

So maybe you give help.

Need is a requirement, something you have to have need.

You might need help.

And of course, if you are a very generous person, you might offer help.

I will give you all the help you want

in that particular sentence.

In this particular sentence we are asking for help.

and maybe we are agreeing or offering to help someone in the future.

I can give you help tomorrow if you need it.

So in this final sentence we are offering help.

You are offering help to someone.

To be unable to stop doing something.

Oh yes, this is something a lot of people say.

Maybe they have a bad habit, or perhaps there is something they can't stop themselves from doing.

We all have something we enjoy doing

and sometimes it is hard to stop doing it.

I cannot help myself from eating junk food.

I cannot help myself from eating junk food.

If you cannot help yourself, that means you are unable able to resist.

You can't stop yourself from doing it.

I cannot help myself from eating junk food, to be unable

to resist or stop oneself from doing something.

I can't help the way I feel.

This also is an interesting way of using help.

I can't help that. Think I can't help it.

It is something that I can't control, something you can't help is something you can't control

in this particular sense,

you might help someone as an assistant.

You help that person as an assistant.

Perhaps it's your job.

Maybe you work in an office, or maybe you are an assistant to your boss.

You help them with.

All of their tasks.

I will help you with your order.

This is a person who is willing.

They are offering to help you.

You might help someone choose a new coat.

Perhaps you are going shopping with your best friend

and she needs your help.

She wants to choose a new coat.

You help someone choose a new coat.

You are giving them assistance or advice.

Maybe I will help you to your table.

This is a situation that might arise in a cafe or a restaurant you walk in.

Someone will help you to your table.

They will show you the way.

Help can be expressed in many interesting ways.

Perhaps there has been an accident and there is a person lying in the road injured.

You might say to them, don't worry, relax.

The assistant, the person who is giving you some sort of service.

Susan will be your help today.

So maybe if you go into a shop, someone might offer help

with someone else, another person, so they might introduce another person to you to give you help.

Perhaps if you go into a restaurant, you might say, Susan will be your help today.

She will be the person to give you all the assistance you need.

She will be your help.

As a phrase, you might give a helping hand to someone.

If you give a helping hand to someone, it means you are giving support or you are giving assistance to someone.

You give a helping hand.

You are giving assistance.

You might give someone a help up.

Now this can be both literal and figurative so we can use help up

in a literal sense.

If you are helping a person to climb up some steps, but we can also use this figuratively

You might be able to give them a help up in their career.

You might be able to find a really good job for them, so you can give that person a help up

and that is using it figuratively.

And then of course, you can give someone to help down.

This is often used literally to mean you are helping a person step up or step down from something.

And of course you can give someone a hand as well.

If you give someone a hand, it means you are offering assistance or you are actually helping them.

Many ways of using that particular phrase to give someone a hand,

as a phrase, we can help out someone.

Quite often we will use it figuratively.

If we are offering help or support in some way.

You might also say help yourself.

That means you can do that thing on your own.

You don't need anyone else to do it for you.

So perhaps you go to a restaurant where they have lots of food out.

You might ask, do I have to be served this food?

And they might reply with no, help yourselves.

That means you can serve yourself.

Help yourself.

These things are there for you to have or take.

You can help yourself.

Don't worry.

You might say that you cannot help but do something.

So this is what I mentioned earlier.

If you cannot help but do something, that means you have no control over it, you cannot help but

eat chocolate.

I can't help it.

I have no control over my urge to eat chocolate.

I have no control.

We can often say that every little bit helps.

So perhaps if you need help from lots of people, each person might just give a little bit of help.

But each

little bit of help

can help you in a big way.

So it's quite often a thing that happens these days when a person needs help or support from a group of people or from their friends.

So maybe

all of your friends can help you.

Each person will do something to help you in a small way, but the result will be big.

So we often say that every little bit, every little thing can help.

Even if it is small, it can still be very helpful indeed.

As a phrase, as a phrase, to be unable to help, it means you have no control over something.

Once again, if you can't help it, it means that thing is out of your control.

I have no control over that. I can't help it.

I can't help it.

It is something I have no control over.

I can't help it. If it rains tomorrow.

I have no control over the weather.

I can't help it if it rains tomorrow.
