what is happening in a sentence or how it's happening

in a sentence.

So these words are structure words not content words.

ဒါကြောင့် ဒါတွေဟာ ဖွဲ့စည်းပုံစကားလုံးတွေ ဖြစ်ပြီး အကြောင်းအရာစကားလုံးတွေ မဟုတ်ပါ။

The exception though is the 'be' verb here.

ဒီမှာ ခြွင်းချက်ကတော့ be ကြိယာဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

It's the only verb that we've got but it's the exception.

The other thing that these words have in common

when they're spoken.

So let's start with 'the'.

ဒီတော့ ''the" နဲ့ စကြရအောင်။

So this word is not usually stressed,

so you don't hear it pronounced like 'the' very often.

You'll hear a shorter version

and also you'll hear

So we have two unstressed forms because

နောက်ကလိုက်တဲ့ စကားလုံးပေါ် မူတည်ပြီး အသံထွက်

the pronunciation of this word changes

ပြောင်းလဲသွားတာကြောင့် unstressed ပုံစံ ၂ မျိုး

depending on the word that follows it.

So if the word 'the' is followed by a consonant sound,

The verb 'be' is the second

"be" ဆိုတဲ့ ကြိယာက အင်္ဂလိပ်ဘာသာမှာ

most commonly used word in English

ဒုတိယအသုံးအများဆုံးဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

but of course, it has several forms doesn't it?

ဒါပေမဲ့ သူ့မှာပုံစံ လေးငါးခြောက်ခုရှိတယ် မဟုတ်လား။

Depending on the subject and the tense.

subject နဲ့ ကာလ အပေါ်မူတည်ပြီးတော့ပေါ့။

So you won't often hear 'be' stressed

ဒါကြောင့် အင်္ဂလိပ်ဝါကျတစ်ခုမှာ be ကို stress သံနဲ့ပြောတာကို

in an English sentence.

ရှင်တို့ မကြာခဏ ကြားကြရမယ် မဟုတ်ပေဘူး။

When it's the main verb in the infinitive form,

အဓိကကြိယာက infinitive ပုံစံဖြစ်တဲ့အခါ၊

you'll usually hear just a slightly shorter version.

အနည်းငယ် ပိုတိုတဲ့ဗားရှင်းကို ကြားရပါလိမ့်မယ်။

I'll be home soon.

I'll be home soon.

Now in the present tenses you'll hear 'am', 'is' and 'are'

ပစ္စုပ္ပန်ကာလမှာတော့ am, is နဲ့ are ကို ကြားကြရမှာပါ။

and these forms are usually pushed together

ဤပုံစံမှာ subject နဲ့အတူ သဘာဝကျကျစကားပြောတဲ့အခါ

when spoken naturally with the subject

များသောအားဖြင့် သီးသန့်တွဲလုံးတွေရှိကြတယ်။

so it forms a contraction.

ဒါကြောင့် အတိုချုံ့ဖြစ်လာတာ။

'I am' 'becomes I'm.

''I am' က I'm ဖြစ်လာတယ်။

'You are', you're.

'You are', you're.

'He', 'she', 'it is',

'He", 'she', 'it is',

he's, she's, it's.

he's, she's, it's.

'We are' becomes we're

'We are' ကနေ we're ဖြစ်လာပြီး

and 'they are' becomes they're.

'they are' ကနေ they're ဖြစ်လာတယ်။

So when spoken, these contractions mean

ဒီတော့ စကားပြောတဲ့အခါ ဒီအတိုချုံ့တွေကြောင့်

that we hardly hear the 'be' verb at all.

'be' ကြိယာကို မကြားရသလောက်ပါပဲ။

The pronunciation of the past tense forms

အတိတ်ကာလ အသံထွက်ပုံစံတွေကိုလည်း

are also usually reduced.

အမြဲတမ်းလိုလို လျှော့ချနေကြတယ်။

So 'was' becomes

ဒါကြောင့် __ က __ ဖြစ်လာတယ်။

He was upstairs earlier.

And 'were' becomes

were က __ ဖြစ်လာတယ်။

Now in past participle form,

ခုတော့ past participle ပုံစံမှာ

the vowel sound is often shortened to

သရသံသံကို မကြာခဏ တိုအောင်ပြောပါတယ်။

instead of

Moving on to the word 'to'.

to ဆိုတဲ့စကားလုံးကို ဆက်ရအောင်။

Now 'to' is the stressed form but when spoken,

ယခု to ဟာ stressed ပုံစံဖြစ်ပေမဲ့ ပြောတဲ့အခါ '

the word is usually unstressed.

အဲဒီ စကားလုံးက အမြဲလိုလို unstress ဖြစ်သွားပါတယ်။

Just like I said, moving on to the word 'to'.

Now 'of' is another incredibly common English word,

must make our list of commonly used words, right?

And just like the previous words, it's often unstressed

ရှေ့က စကားတွေလိုပဲ စကားပြောတဲ့အခါ၊ အများအားဖြင့်

when spoken.

Now this tiny little word 'at'

can be stressed or unstressed.

So by stressing 'at'

at ကို stress သံနဲ့ပြောရင်

I'm adding emphasis. I'm making the meaning stronger.

not before, not after, at three.

So most of the time though, this word won't be stressed.

ဒါကြောင့် အချိန်အများစုမှာ ဒီစကားလုံးက unstressed ပါ။

And the sound reduces to

အသံကိုလျော့ကျစေပါတယ်

Just like 'at', 'that' can be stressed or unstressed.

So this word can be used as a determiner

to explain which specific thing we're talking about.

ဒီစကားလုံးကို မျိုးပြပစ္စည်းအဖြစ် သုံးနိုင်ပါတယ်။

So in this situation,

ဒါကြောင့်ဒီအခြေအနေမှာ

you'll probably need to stress this word

ဒီစကားလုံးကို stress လုပ်ဖို့ လိုအပ်ပါလိမ့်မယ်။

so that it's really clear.

တကယ့်ကိုရှင်းရှင်းသွားတာပေါ့။

And as an adverb it will probably also be stressed.

adverb အဖြစ်ဆိုရင်လည်း stress လုပ်ရပါ လိမ့်မယ်။

But when 'that' is used as a conjunction

ဒါပေမဲ့ that ကို သမ္ဗန္ဓ အဖြစ်သုံးပြီး

so when it's connecting two clauses in a sentence,

ဝါကျတစ်ခုမှာ clause နှစ်ခု ဆက်စပ်တဲ့အခါ

it's unstressed and the vowel sound reduces.

unstressed ဖြစ်ပြီးတော့ သရသံကလျော့ သွားပါတယ်။

It becomes

ဒီလိုဖြစ်မယ်။

I told her that I'd be here.

So let's talk about the articles 'are' and 'an'

ဒီတော့ရဲ့ အမြဲတမ်းလိုလို unstressed ဖြစ်တဲ့

because they are both usually unstressed.

article တွေ a နဲ့ an အကြောင်းပြောရအောင်။

Now they're used with singular nouns, aren't they?

ခုတော့ သူတို့ကို တစ်ခုကိန်းနာမ်နှင့်အတူ သုံးပါတယ်။ ဟုတ်တယ်ဟုတ်။

When you're talking about just one of something.

သင်ရုံတစျခုတစ်ခုခု၏အကြောင်းပြောနေတာဖွင့်လိုက်တဲ့အခါ။

So since we stress English words to make the meaning

အင်္ဂလိပ်စကားလုံးတွေကို stress လုပ်တာဟာ ဆိုလိုရင်းကို တကယ်ရှင်းလင်းစေဖို့ပါ။

really clear, it's much more natural to stress the number

ဆိုတော့၊ article ကိုထက် ကိန်းတွေကို stress လုပ်တာက

rather than stress the article

အများကြီး ပိုသဘာဝကျပါမယ်။

because the important information

အရေးကြီးတဲ့အချက်က ဘာကြောင့်လဲဆိုတော့

is that there is just one of something.

အဲဒါဟာ တစ်ခုခုရဲ့ တစ်ခုတည်းသောအရာမို့ပါ။

So it sounds a bit odd to hear:

ဒီတော့ ကြားရတာ ထူးခြားနေပါလိမ့်မယ်။

No! I said I only wanted a sandwich!

It's much more natural to hear:

ပိုပြီး သဘာဝကျကျ ကြားရဖို့ဆိုရင်

No! I said I only wanted one sandwich!

No! I said I only wanted one sandwich!

So since most of the time, these articles are unstressed

အချိန်အများစုမှာ article တွေဟာ unstressed ဖြစ်တာကြောင့်

the vowel sound reduces to become the schwa sound.

သရသံလျော့ပြီး schwa သံ ဖြစ်လာတယ်။

I'm only staying for a day.

I'm only staying for a day.

Can you pass me an apple?

Now very often the word 'it' is reduced too.

it ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံးကိုလည်း လျှော့လေ့ရှိပါတယ်။

So instead of 'it'

ဒီတော့ it အစား

the vowel sound relaxes and it becomes

သရသံပြေလျော့ပြီး schwa သံ

the schwa sound

ဖြစ်လာတယ်။

and when spoken quickly, the T is often

အမြန်ပြောတဲ့အခါ, T ကို မကြာခဏဆိုသလို

not fully pronounced either.

အသံအပြည့်အဝ မထွက်တော့ပါဘူး။

The air is not released after the sound, so instead of

အသံနောက်မှာ လေမထုတ်ပါဘူး။ ဒီတော့ လေကို

the air is caught

ထိန်းထားမဲ့အစား

and then you move quickly to the next sound.

ပြီးတာနဲ့ ရှင်တို့ နောက်တစ်သံကို အမြန်ရွှေ့ပါ။

So listen up!

နေဆင်ကြည့်ပါ။

It doesn't matter.

Now notice how the word 'it'

is pulled into the word before it

because it ends with a consonant.

And 'as', this little word can be a conjunction,

ပြီးတော့ "as" ဒီစကားလုံးလေးဟာ သမ္ဗန္ဓ ဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

so it can connect two parts of a sentence together.

ဒီတော့ ဝါကျအစိတ်အပိုင်းနှစ်ရပ်ကို တွဲစပ် ပေးနိုင်ပါတယ်။

It can be a preposition, even an adverb.

ဒါဟာ ဝိဘတ်တင်မက adverb တောင် ဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

So it can be stressed.

ဒါကြောင့် stress ဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

He wasn't as late as I thought.

But it's often unstressed.

ဒါပေမဲ့ တခါတလေ unstressed ပါ။

Again, using the schwa for the unstressed sound.

Last but not least, another small

နောက်ဆုံးပေမဲ့ အနည်းဆုံးမဟုတ်။ သေးပေမဲ့ အားကောင်းတဲ့

but mighty English word 'for'.

နောက်ထပ် အင်္ဂလိပ်စကားလုံး for

Now when I pronounce this word, I don't pronounce

အခု ကျွန်မ ဒီစကားလုံးကိုအသံထွက်တဲ့အခါ နောက်ဆုံး

the final

အသံကို

sound and that's my Australian accent

ဗြိတိသျှအသံထွက်နဲ့ အတူတူဖြစ်တဲ့

which is the same

ကျွန်မရဲ့ သြစတြေးလျဝဲလေသံနဲ့

as the British pronunciation of this word,

pronounces the R at the end.

But whether or not you pronounce the R sound

there is a different vowel sound

when this word is stressed

ဒီစကားလုံးကို stress တဲ့အခါ

and unstressed.

And this word is usually unstressed.

Just like all of the other

So you've probably noticed that the schwa sound

And that's because this is the most common sound

So as you're using all of these small but grammatically

Words that are important
