قمت بعمل العديد من الفيديوهات الخاصة بالتعبيرات الإصطلاحية الإنجليزية

and that's because

وهذا لأنهم

they're a really important part of English.

جزء مهم جداً في الإنجليزية

They're expressions that come up all the time

هم عبارة عن تعبيرات تستعمل في كل وقت

in both written English and spoken English,

في الإنجليزية المكتوبة والمنطوقة

في المحادثات الرسمية وغير الرسمية

in formal and informal conversations.

When used correctly, especially in an English exam,

عندما تستخدم بشكل صحيح خاصةً في اختبار الانجليزي

they show creativity and they demonstrate

فإنها تُظهر الابداع وتوضح

a control over the language.

التحكم باللغة

Now most idioms don't make a lot of sense, literally.

الآن، معظم التعبيرات الإصطلاحية ليس لها معنى حرفياً

Often you can't just look at the words

وغالباً لا تستطيع أن تنظر فقط إلى الكلمات

and try to guess the meaning.

وتحاول أن تخمن المعنى

The meaning is often something completely different

المعنى غالباً ما يكون شيء مختلف تماماً

to the individual words in the idiom.

So you need to learn

the meaning of these idioms separately

This is the advice that I give all of my students.

هذه النصيحة التي أخبرها لكل تلاميذي

When you hear a new idiom

عندما تسمع تعبير جديد

and you learn the meaning,

وتعرف معناه

think about a situation in your own life where

فكر في موقف من حياتك الشخصية

the meaning of this idiom is relevant.

متعلق بمعنى المصطلح

So let's use a really common idiom as an example,

دعونا نستخدم تعبير شائع كمثال

'a blessing in disguise'

'A blessing in disguise'

which is used when something seems bad or unlucky

حيث يستخدم عندما يبدو شيءٌ ما سيئاً أو غير محظوظ

at first

في البداية

but it results in something good happening later.

لكن ينتج عنه شئ جيد بعد ذلك

So just to be clear,

فقط للتوضيح

disguise is something that someone wears

"disguise" شيء يرتديه الشخص

to hide themselves,

ليخفي نفسه

so a blessing in disguise is a good thing

لذا 'a blessing in disguise' هو شيء جيد

that is hidden, got it?

Okay, so to help you remember this idiom

حسناً، لأساعدكم على تذكر التعبير

and this is something that you should do every time

وهذا أمر يجب أن تفعلونه كل مرة

you learn a new idiom,

أن تتعلم مصطلح جديد

is think about how it relates to you.

يعني أن تفكر في كم هو مرتبط بك

Think about an event or a moment in your life,

فكر في حدث أو لحظة في حياتك

where something happened

حدث فيها شيء

that seemed bad at the time

بدا سيئاً وقتها

but it resulted in something good happening later.

لكن كانت نتيجته شيء جيد بعد ذلك

So let's use an example to explain.

هيا نستخدم مثال للشرح

My best friend Amy wanted to study medicine

صديقتي المفضلة إيمي كانت تريد ان تدرس الطب

and her parents really wanted her to study medicine too

وأردا والداها بشدة أيضاً أن تدرس الطب

but she didn't get accepted at the

لكنها لم تُقبل في

University she wanted to study at.

الجامعة التي أرادت أن تدرس فيها

That's bad, right?

هذا أمر سيء، أليس كذلك؟

She was really upset about it at the time

وكانت منزعجة بسبب ذلك وقتها

but a few months later, she got an opportunity

لكن بعد عدة أشهر، حصلت على فرصة

to volunteer with an aid organisation in Africa.

لتتطوع في منظمة للمساعدات في أفريقيا

So she thought 'Why not?'

ففكرت، لما لا؟

She went out and went on a big adventure.

لقد انطلقت ومضت في مغامرة كبيرة

But she loved the work that she was doing there,

لكنها أحبت العمل التي كانت تقوم به هناك

helping refugees to apply for visas

مساعدة اللاجئين ليقدموا لتأشيرات

so that they could start new lives in other countries.

لكي يستطيعوا أن يبدأوا حياة جديدة في دول أخرى

And she was really good at this job,

وكانت حقاً جيدة في هذا العمل

she instantly found her true passion in life.

لقد وجدت شغفها الحقيقي في الحياة فوراً

So over time, she was promoted within the organisation

وبمرور الوقت، ترقت في المنظمة

and now she's the CEO!

والآن هي المدير التنفيذي

So, when the university didn't accept her

لذا، ندما لم تقبلها الجامعة

for the degree in medicine,

لدراسة الطب

that was a blessing in disguise

كانت ' a blessing in disguise'

because she probably would never have found

لأنه من الممكن حينها أنها كانت لن تجد

her true passion

if she just went to university and studied medicine

like her parents wanted.

Now, can you think of an example from your life

Let's try another example now,

هيا نجرب مثال آخر الآن

'the best of both worlds'

'the best of both worlds'

so this idiom is used when you can enjoy

هذا المثال يستخدم عندما تستطيع أن تستمتع

the advantages or the benefits of two different things

بمميزات أو فوائد شيئين مختلفين

at the same time.

في وقت واحد

My mum used to live in the city,

اعتادت أمي على العيش في المدينة

it was close to her work and she loved

كانت قريبة من عملها وهي تحب

going to the theatre and galleries in her free time

الذهاب إلى المسرح والمعارض في وقت فراغها

but now that she's retired,

لكنها متقاعدة الآن

she's moved to a small town by the beach

انتقلت إلى بلدة صغيرة بجانب الشاطئ

and she really loves it.

وهي بالفعل تحبها

It's quiet, it's peaceful,

إنها هادئة وتنعم بالسلام

she's got some good friends there.

لديها بعض الأصدقاء الجيدين هناك

But she misses going to the theatre and seeing shows

لكنها تشتاق للذهاب إلى المسرح ومشاهدة العروض

every week, like she used to,

كما اعتادت كل أسبوع

it takes her over an hour to drive to the city

تأخذ منها أكثر من ساعة للوصول للمدينة

so she doesn't go there very often now.

لذلك فهي لا تذهب هناك كثيراً

But recently, my mum bought a small apartment

لكنها اشترت شقة صغيرة مؤخراً

right in the middle of the city.

في وسط المدينة

So now she's got the best of both worlds,

وهي الان لديها افضل ما في العالمين

the peaceful relaxing beach lifestyle,

اسلوب حياه الشاطئ المريح المسالم

but then when things seem a little quiet,

لكن عندما تبدا الاشياء هادئه الى حد ما

she can drive to her apartment in the city

تستطيع ان تقود الى شقتها في المدينه

and see some shows and visit the gallery.

وتشاهد العروض وتزور المعارض

She's got the best of both worlds.

لديها افضل ما في العالمين

So what about you?

لكن ماذا عنك انت؟

Can you think of a situation in your life

هل تستطيع ان تفكر في موقف من حياتك؟

where this idiom is relevant? A time when

حيث المصطلح يتعلق به ؟ الوقت الذي

you had the best of both worlds.

انت لديك افضل ما في العالمين

Okay, to 'give someone the benefit of the doubt'.

حسنا...أن تعطي شخص ما فائده الشك

Now if you give someone the benefit of the doubt

الان اذا اعطيت شخص ما فائده الشك

you trust that they're telling you the truth,

انت تثق انه يقول الحقيقه

you assume that their behaviour is honest

وتظن ان سلوكه صادق

and correct, even though you're not certain that it is.

وصحيح ورغم ذلك انت غير متاكد تماما من هذا

I don't know if you know this about me yet,

انا اعرف اذا كنت انت تعرف هذا عني حتي الان

but as an English teacher, I can be a massive pushover.

لكنني في مدرستي انجليزي اقدر اكون مهمه سهله كبيره

I always want to believe that my students

انا دائما اريد انا صدق ان طلابي

are telling me the truth.

يقولون الحقيقه

So when I first started teaching,

لكن في الاول عندما بدات ادرس

I was working at a university in Melbourne

كنت اعمل في جامعه في ملبورن

and my students were all international students

وطلابي كانوا من كل الجنسيات

who had to pass an exam

ولازم كان يجتاز الاختبار

before they were accepted into their university courses,

قبل ان يقبلوا في دورات الجامعه

so the stakes were really high.

لكن الاوتاد كانت عاليه جدا

If they failed, their visas would be cancelled

اذا رغبوا سوف تلغي تاشيراهم

and they would be sent back to their home country.

وسوف يعود الى وطنهم الام

So many of the teachers, my colleagues,

لذلك الكثير من المدرسين و تلاميذي

were very tough on their students, if they handed in their

كانوا صارمين جدا مع طلابهم اذا سلموا

assignments late, if they didn't arrive to class on time.

واجبهم متاخرين وإذا تأخروا في ميعاد الرس

But, if my students had a good reason

لكن لو طلابي كان عندهم سبب جيد

why they were late then I believed them.

لوصولهم المتاخر سوف اصدقهم

I remember one guy, Paulo,

اتذكر باولو

arrived an hour late for class and he told me

وصل ساعة متأخر عن الدرس وأخبرني

that he had locked his keys inside his car.

انه قفل علي مفاتيح داخل السيارة

That was his reason.

لذلك كان سبب معقول

And I was a little suspicious at the time because

وكنت متشككة قليلا وقتها

his hair was all messy and he looked a bit sleepy.

شعره كان مبعثر ويبدوا نائم قليلا

But I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

لكني أعطيته فائدة الشك

He was a good student, so I wanted to trust him,

هو كان طالب جيد لذلك اردت أن أثق به

even though I wasn't sure if he was telling me the truth.

وبرغم من ذلك كنت غير متأكدة انه يقول الحقيقه

I found out later that he was,

اكتشفت مؤخرا انه

so I was glad I'd given him the benefit of the doubt.

كان مسرور اني اعطيته فائده الشك

Okay, your turn!

حسنا دورك انت

Think of the time in your life when

فكرت في وقت في حياتك عندما

you gave someone the benefit of the doubt,

انت اعطيت فائده الشك لاحدهم

when you accepted that they were telling you the truth,

عندما تقبلت انهم يقولون الحقيقه لك

but you weren't a hundred percent sure about it.

لكنك لست متاكد مئه في المئه من هذا

When a situation is not under control,

عندما يكون موقف خارج عن السيطره

this idiom is a good one to remember.

هذا المصطلح جيد لتتذكره

It often relates to arguments and behaviour.

غالبا يتعلق بالجدال والسلوك

So if a situation is out of hand,

اذا لو كان موقف خارج عن يديك

it's not being managed well and it could cause

لا تستطيع ادارته بشكل جيد و يمكن ان يسبب

some problems for you, then you can use it.

بعض المشاكل لك حينها تستطيع ان تستخدمه

So for example, my nephew, he had fifteen

على سبيل المثال لدي 15

friends come to his sixth birthday party last weekend

صديق أتوا ليحضروا عيد ميلاده السادس عشر نهاية الأسبوع الماضي

and we planned some party games to play.

ونحن خططنا لبعض ألعاب الحفلة لنلعبها

I had three prizes to give for the winners.

وكان لدي 3 جوائز للفائزين

So when I gave out the prizes,

فعندما سلمت الجوائز

two kids who didn't get a prize,

طفلين لم يتسلموا الجائزة

started crying uncontrollably

وكان البكاء خارج عن السيطرة

and another tried to take a prize off the winner.

وواحد اخر حاول أن يأخذ الجائزه من الفائز

So things got really out of hand,

الأمور حقا خرجت عن ايدينا

so I quickly had to give out some chocolates

انا كان لازم بسرعة اعطيهم بعض الشيكولاته

to help keep things under control.

لاساعد في ان تبقي الأمور تحت السيطرة

Maybe that's not the best example.

ممكن هذا أن يكون ليس افضل مثال

Okay so during the celebrations last night,

حسنا أثناء الاحتفالات الليلة الماضية

things got a little out of hand.

الأمور خرجت قليلا عن الايد

Paul broke a window by accident, they were all

بول كسر النافذة بالصدفة وكانوا جميعهم

drinking a lot and I tried to stop them

يشربون كثيرا وانا حاولت أن اوقفهم

before things got out of hand but I wasn't quick enough!

قبل ان تخرج الأمور عن الأيدي لكني لم اكن سريعه كفايه

Your turn!

Can you think of an event or a situation in your life

هل تستطيع ان تفكر في حدث أو موقف من حياتك

where things got out of hand?

حيث الأمور خرجت عن يديك

You know, they got a bit crazy.

انت تعلم أنهم أصبحوا مجانين قليلاً

Can you believe

هل تصدق ان

that we are already up to idiom number five?

اننا جاهزون للوصول إلى المصطلح رقم 5

Time flies when you're having fun!

الوقت يطير عندما نمرح

This is a really common idiom.

انه حقا مصطلح شائع

You can use it when you don't notice how long

تستطيع ان تستخدمه عندما لا تعرف ما المدة

something takes because you've actually

التي يأخذها أمر ما لأنك بالفعل

been really enjoying yourself.

تكون مستمتع

It's been fun, so you can simply say

انه امر ظريف حيث تستطيع ان تقول ببساطة

'time flies when you're having fun!'

الوقت يطير عندما نمرح

It tells the listener that you're surprised

انت تخبر المستمع انك متفاجيء

by how quickly times gone by

بكيف مر الوقت بسرعة

and it's the perfect idiom to use when you get to the

وأنه مصطلح مثالي يستخدم عندما انت تصل إلى

end of a speaking exam and your examiner says

نهاية إختبار المحادثه وممتحنك يقول

"Okay, that's the end of your speaking exam!"

حسنا أنها نهاية إختبار المحادثه

You can impress them

تستطيع أن تبهرهم

and show them how much you were enjoying yourself

وتبدي لهم كم انت مستمتع

during the exam by saying

أثناء الاختبار بأن تقول

"Really? Gosh! Time flies when you're having fun!"

حقا الوقت يطير عندما نمرح

And actually this idiom is often just reduced down to

وفي الواقع هذا المصطلح غالبا يختصر الي

'time flies!'

الوقت يطير

If you're in a meeting with some colleagues, for example

لو انت في اجتماع مع مع زملائك علي سبيل المثال

and someone says

واحدهم قال

"It's 3:15pm already! Our meeting's run over time."

انها الثالثة والربع مساء اجتماعنا تخطي الوقت انتهائه

You could say "Oh, really? Time flies...

تستطيع أن تقول حقا ؟ الوقت يطير

I've got to go. I'm late for my next meeting!"

انا لازم امشي انا متأخر عن مقابلتي القادمة

It's just a casual way of saying

انها طريقة غير رسمية لقول

that the meeting was interesting and you didn't notice

أن المقابلة كانت ممتعة وانت لم تلاحظ ان

how quickly time went by.

كيف الوقت مر بسرعة

But it's a positive expression so don't use this idiom

لكنه تعبير إيجابي لذلك لا تستخدم هذا المصطلح

if you're frustrated or annoyed

لو كنت محبط أو متضايق

that the meeting ran over time.

ان هذا الاجتماع تخطي وقته

And when you're using the complete idiom 'time flies

وعندما تستخدم المصطلح كامل الوقت يطير

when you're having fun!'

عندما تمرح

the use of you're

استخدام انك

is not directed to the person that you're talking to.

غير مباشرة للشخص الذي أنت تتحدث إليه

It's not like you're saying

ليس انت الذي تقول

your time flies when you're having fun.

أن الوقت يطير عندما تمرح

It's a really general statement, it's not specifically

أنها حقا تعبير عام وليس

referring to anyone. It's a fixed expression

يشير خاصه الى اي احد انه تعبير ثابت

so it's always said,

لذلك أنه دائما يقال

'time flies when you're having fun!'

الوقت يطير عندما امرح

And yes time does fly!

ونعم الوقت يطير فعلا

We are coming to the end of another lesson

نحن سوف نصل الى نهايه درس اخر

but the five idioms in this video are very common.

لكن الخمس مصطلحات في هذا الفيديو شائعة جدا

You'll hear them often in movies,

انت سوف تسمعهم كثيرا في الافلام

you'll read them in books,

وتقراءهم في الكتب

you'll hear them in conversations

وتسمعهم في المحادثات

and you can be confident using

وتكون قادرا على استخدامهم بثقه

any of them with native English speakers

اي منهم مع متحدثين انجليزين اصلين

because

لأن

people use them in all English-speaking countries.

الناس يستخدموهم في كل الدول التي تتحدث الانجليزيه

They're really useful ones to learn.

أنهم حقا مفيدين للتعلم
