English words that you're probably

mispronouncing! If you are learning to

speak English, then pronunciation is

probably one of the biggest frustrations

من المحتمل ان يكون واحد من اكبر الاشياء المحبطة

that you have right now and these words

لديكم الآن وهذه الكلمات

that I've chosen are difficult because

التى اخترتها مختلفة بسبب

of the combination of letters or sounds

تجمع الحروف او الاصوات

in English. Together they can be quite

difficult or your eyes can, in fact, play

tricks on you because the letters that

you see, they don't sound like you think

they should and some of these words are

even difficult for native English

speakers to pronounce! But don't worry

about it, don't sweat, we are going to fix

these pronunciation problems right here,

right now in this lesson! Let's get

الآن فى هذا الدرس! هيا نبدأ

started! OK the first word is 'vegetable'

حسناالكلمة الاولى هى " خضار"

'vegetable'. Now this word is a challenge

"خضار" هذه الكلمة الان تحدى

because it looks like there should be

لانها تبدو وكأن فيها

four syllables in this word. 'Vegetable'.

اربع مقاطع صوتية "خضار"

But there's not, there are three

ولكن لا, هناك ثلاثة

syllables, 'vegetable'. Can you see the

مقاطع "خضار" هل ترى

syllable - that we completely forget the 'e'?

هذا المقطع حيث يجب ان ننسى ال "إ" تماما

'Vegetable'. We don't pronounce that second

"خضار" لا ننطق المقطع الثانى

syllable. 'Vegetable', 'vegetable'.

"خضار" "خضار"

Fantastic!

رائع!

I'm going to the market to get some

انا ذاهبة للسوق لكى أحضر بعض

vegetables for dinner.

الخضراوات للعشاء

'Comfortable'. Now

"مريح" الان

this word, just like 'vegetable', has an

هذه الكلمة, تماما مثل "خضار" فيها

extra vowel in there that we don't need

صوت متحرك زائد لا نحتاج

to pronounce. 'Comfortable', not 'comfortable'

ان ننطقه. "مريح" ليست "موريح"

or 'comfortable' but

او "موريح" ولكن

'comfort-

مر

-able'. 'Comfortable'. You skip that vowel

يح "مريح" لا تنطقهذا الصوت المتحرك (عديه)

sound. 'Comfortable'. You look very

"مريح" تبدو مريح جدا

comfortable this afternoon.

بعد ظهر هذا اليوم.

'Almond'. Now in this word the 'L' is silent.

"لوزة" الان فى هذه الكلمة ال "ل" صامتة (لاتنطق)

It's not 'almond' or 'almond' it's 'al-

-mond', 'almond', 'almond', 'almond'.

I'm going to make an

انا سوف اقوم بإعداد

almond cake for dessert.

كعكة اللوز للتحلية

Now there are lots of other English words that have a

silent letter 'L' in them - words like

'salmon', not 'salmon', 'half', not 'half', 'would',

"سلمون" "نصف" "سوف"

'talk', 'walk'. All of these words have a

"يتكلم" "يمشى" كل هذه الكلمات فيها

silent 'L' in them, which makes them a

"ل" صامتة (لاتنطق) والتى تجعلهم

little bit tricky to pronounce correctly.

OK, what about this one?

ماذا عن هذه

How many times

كم مرة

have you been asked to read a paragraph

طلب منك ان تقرأ فقرة

out aloud in front of the class and

بصوت مرتفع امام الفصل و

you've been reading and then you come

بينما تقرأ

across this and you think, 'How on earth

واجهتك هذه وتفكر حينها

am I going to say that?!' Lots of native

كيف سأنطقها؟ الكثير من

English speakers actually mess this up

المتحدثين الانجليز الاصليين فى الواقع يخطئون فيها

as well and they'll pronounce X-cetera

ايضا وينطقونها ..............

or X-cetera and it should be pronounced

او........... وهى يجب ان تنطق

'et cetera', 'et cetera', 'et cetera'.

....... ..............................

or 'et cetera', if you're like me. OK this one

او ............. إذا كنت مثلى حسنا هذة

is especially difficult! 'Clothes', 'clothes',

صعبة للغاية "ملابس"

'clothes'. Now the reason why it's

والآن لماذا هى

especially difficult is because of the

صعبة للغاية بسبب

two final consonant sounds, the '-th' and

الصوتين الساكنين فى نهايتها "زا" و

the plural sound. Now this noun is of

صوت "s" الجمع. هذا الاسم

course, always plural. Clothes refers to

بالطبع يكون دائما فى صيغة الجمع. "ملابس" تشير الى

shirts, shorts, trousers, jumpers, jackets

القمصان, الشورت, البنطال, البلوفرات, الجواكت

- anything that you wear is your clothes,

أى شئ ترتديه هو ملابسك

are your clothes! But 'clothes', 'clothes'

هو ملابسك! ولكن ........

not 'cloths', not 'close' and not 'clothes' either!

وليست............. أيضا

The difficult thing about the

الصعب

pronunciation of this word is the two

فى نطق هذه الكلمة هو

consonant sounds.

الصوتين الساكنين.

together. Both of

معا. كلا من

those sounds are voiced consonant sounds

هذين الصوتين ذو صوت ساكن

so the sound is made here in your vocal

ولذلك الصوت يصنع هنا فى

cords.

حبالك الصوتية

Now the thing to remember

وهنا ما يجب ان تتذكر

that's really important is with that '-th' sound

انه حقا مهم فى هذا الصوت "ذا"

you need to bring your teeth through

انك تحتاج ان تخرج اسنانك من

- your tongue through your teeth! Now the

- لسانك من بين اسنانك! صوت

'-th' sound is very, very soft. It is

ال "ذا" ناعم جدا جدا انه

definitely still there, it needs to sound

بالتأكيد موجود, ويجب ان ينطق

different from the verb 'close'. OK, which

مختلف عن الفعل "يغلق" ايهما

doesn't have the '-th' sound. This word has

لا يوجد فيه الصوت "ذا" هذه الكلمة فيها

the '-th' sound, 'clothes', 'clothes'. It's very

صوت ال "ذا" ....... ........... انها

short but it's definitely there! I need

قصيرة جدا ولكنها موجوده! انا احتاج

to pack my clothes tonight because we

ان احزم ملابسى اليلة لاننا

leave early in the morning. I need to

سنغادر فى الصباح الباكر.انا احتاج

pack my clothes tonight.

ان احزم ملابسى اليلة

'Jewellery', 'jewellery', 'jewellery'.

مجوهرات

Again, we've got an extra vowel here that we don't need

مرة اخرى, لدينا صوت علة (متحرك) والذى لا نحتاج

to pronounce. We don't say 'jewellery',

ان ننطقه فإننا لا نقول ............

'jewellery'. It's just 'jewellery' and actually

انها فقط................... و فى الواقع

in American English the spelling is

فى الانجليزية الامريكية الهجاء

slightly different to the British and

مختلف قليلا عن البريطانى و

the Australian version. And the American

الاسترالى. والامريكى

version should help you to pronounce

يساعدك ان تنطق

this word more correctly. 'Jewelry', 'jewelry',

هذه الكلمات بطريقة صحيحة اكثر .... ....

so that's gold, silver, pearls, diamonds,

ولذلك الذهب والفضة والؤلؤ الالماس,

earrings, rings, necklaces - all of these

الحلق, الخاتم ,العقد - كل هذه

things that we wear to make ourselves

الاشياء التى نرتديها لكى تجعلنا

look more beautiful! I don't wear a lot

نبدو اكثر جمالا! انا لا ارتدى الكثير

of jewellery myself. The only jewellery I

من المجوهرات (انا حلوة من غير حاجة) الشئ الوحيد

wear is this ring and sometimes some earrings.

الذى ارتديه هذا الخاتم وفى بعض الاحيان الحلق

'Architecture', 'architecture'.

فن المعمار

This one is so often mispronounced! I hear

هذه غالبا تنطق بطريقة خاطئة

'architecture', 'architecture',

فن المعمار

- which is incorrect! The '-ch' sound in this word is a

ايهما خطأ! نطق ال ch فى هذة الكلمة

sound like in 'cat'.

تنطق كما فى cat قطة

'Architecture', 'architect'.

"فن المعمار" " مهندس معمارى"

'Architect'.

معمارى

It's not the same '-ch' sound

انها ليست مثل نطق ال ch

that you hear in words like 'chocolate'

التى تسمعها فى كلمات مثل شيكولاتة

and 'cheese', it's a sound and there are

و جبنة ويوجد

quite a few English words that actually

القليل جدا من الكلمات الانجليزية والتى بالفعل

have this same pronunciation of the '-ch'

فيها نفس النطق لل لمجموعة ch

combination - words like 'stomach' and 'ache'.

كلمات مثل "معدة" و "الم"

The '-ch' in all of these words is

ال ch فى كل هذه الكلمات

pronounced like a sound.

تنطق مثل الصوت "ك"

My brother is an architect.

اخى يكون معمارى

He went home early because he had a stomach ache.

عاد الى المنزل مبكرا لان لديه الم بالمعده

'Enthusiastic', not

"متحمس" ليست

'enthusiastic' or 'enthusiastic', but

......... او ..............

'enthusiastic'. You have to work harder to

ولكن .......... يجب ان تجتهد لكى

get this one correct! So many of my

تنطقها بطريقة صحيحة! ولذلك العديد من

students say "This one is too hard! I'm

طلابى يقل "هذه الكلمة صعبة للغاية" انا

just not going to use this word!" and I

لن استخدم هذة الاكلمة ابدا " وانا

say "NO, we are going to get it right,

اقول "لا , سوف نقوم بنطقها النطق الصحيح الان

right now, together here in this lesson!"

الان معا هنا فى هذا الدرس!"

'Enthusiastic'. So what you need to do

......... اذن ما تحتاج ان تفعله

is break down this word. Start with the

ان تجزئ هذه الكلمة. ( تقسمها مقاطع)

first syllable,

بالمقطع الاول

Where is your

اين لسانك؟

tongue? What's it doing on that final

ماذا يفعل فى نهاية

consonant sound?

الصوت الساكن؟

It's at the top of

انه فى اعلى

your mouth and the 'n' sound is made back

فمك وصوت n يظهر فى الخلف

in the soft palate - it's a nasal sound

فى باطن الفم انه صوت انفى (يخرج الهواء فيه من الانف )

and to move to the '-th' sound, you need to

وتنتقل الى صوت ال "ث" انت تحتاج

of course, bring your tongue down and out

بالطبع ان تخفض لسانك وتخرجه

through your teeth.

من بين اسنانك

The tongue must come out through the middle of your

اللسان يجب ان يخرج من منتصف

teeth! If you don't, you will mispronounce

اسنانك! لو لم تفعل ذلك سوف تخطئ فى نطق

this word and you'll say 'enthusiastic'

هذه الكلمة وسوف تقول ..............

or 'enthusiastic' instead. You need

او............... بدلا من ذلك انت تحتاج

to say

ان تقول

'Enthusiastic', 'enthusiastic'.

Now you're going to be enthusiastic

الان سوف تكون متحمث

about using that word!

لاستخدام هذة الكلمة

'Word', 'world'.

كلمة , عالم

and 'work'.

و عمل

Now you're probably mispronouncing

من الممكن انك تخطئ فى نطق

these words because you are looking at

هذة الكلمات لانك تنظر الى

the '-or' and you're trying to pronounce

ال or وتحاول ان تنطق

the vowel sound 'or', like in 'door'.

الصوت المتحرك or مثلما فى باب

But this is incorrect, the vowel sound is actually

ولكن هذا غير صحيح . فى الواقع الصوت المتحرك (حرف العلة)

as in 'her'. 'Work', 'world', 'word'.

ينطق مثلما فى "her" .......... ...................

This is your eyes playing tricks on you! Your eyes are

هنا عينيك يخدعانك! عينيك

seeing these words, seeing the letters O

يرون هذه الكلمات يرون الحرفين o و r

and R and they're telling you to

ويخبرانك ان

pronounce 'or' but, in fact, you should be

تنطق or .....................ولكن فى الحقيقة يجب ان

pronouncing

تنطق ...................

for all of these words!

فى كل هذه الكلمات!

'Word'. 'World. 'Work'.

كلمة عالم عمل

If you pronounce 'or', especially for this last one, 'work', it

لو انك نطقت ال or .......... خاصة فى الكلمة الاخيرة

actually sounds a lot like the English

انها فى الواقع ستبدو مثل الكلمة الانجليزية

word, 'walk'.

يمشى

'Photograph'. Now perhaps you

"صورة " ربما

can pronounce this word correctly,

تستطيع ان تنطق هذه الكلمة بطريقة صحيحة

'photograph', but what about all of the

ولكن ماذا عن

other words in this word family?

باقى الكلمات الاخرى التى من عائلة هذه الكلمة؟

'Photography', 'photographer', 'photographic'.

..................... ........... ...................

When my students mispronounce these

عندما يخطئ طلابى فى نطق هذه

words, it's usually because they are

الكلمات , وهذا عادة لانهم

stressing the wrong syllable. English

يضغطون على المقطع الخاطئ . الكلمات

words that have more than one syllable

الانجليزية التى فيها اكثر من مقطع

always have one strong stressed syllable.

دائما يكون الضغط فيها على مقطع واحد

Sometimes there are secondary syllables

احيانا يكون هناك مقطع اثتثنائى

but there is always one main stressed

ولكن دائما هناك مقطع اساسى

syllable that is clearer and stronger

يضغط عليه يكون اوضح واقوى

than the others and the unstressed

من الاخرين والمقطع غير

syllable - the syllable that's not

المضغوط

stressed - is often reduced down to a

يكون غالبا مخفف الى

schwa vowel sound.

صوت العلة "شواه"

Now the schwa sound is the lazier sound

صوت العلة "شواه" هو الاكثر كسلا

in English.

فى الانجليزية

That's the schwa sound,

هذا هو صوت "الشواه"

it's the laziest vowel sound in English.

انه اكثر اصوات العلة (الاصوات المتحركة) كسلا فى الانجليزية

And these stress patterns are exactly

وانماط الضغط هذه هى بالضبط

what is different about the

ما يكون مختلف فى

pronunciation of these words, so in the

نطق هذه الكلمات لذلك فى

first example, 'photograph', the first

المثال الاول ............ المقطع

syllable is the stressed syllable. You

الاول هو المقطع الظاهر

can hear it very clearly, 'photograph'.

تستطيع ان تسمعه بوضوح شديد ......

The second syllable is

المقطع الثانى

unstressed and it is reduced down to the

غير ظاهر ويخفف الى

schwa sound.

صوت شواه

'Photograph', 'photograph', it's very short,

...... ......... انها قصيرة جدا

it's very lazy, it's not very strong at all.

انها كسولة جدا انها ليست قوية على الاطلاق

Now if you look at the second

إذا نظرت الى المثال الثانى

example, 'photography', you can hear the

تستطيع ان تسمع النطق

pronunciation is different and that's

انه مختلف وهذا

because the second syllable is the

لان المقطع الثانى هو

stressed syllable in this word.

المقطع الظاهر فى هذه الكلمة

'Photography'.

.........

'Photography'.

..............

Compare it to the first syllable where the schwa

قارنه بالمقطع الاول اين صوت الشواه

sound is - it reduces down to the schwa

يكون - انه تم تخفيفه الى صوت الشواه

sound and you just hear 'photography'.

وانت فقط تسمع...............

'Photographer'.

.................

The third example

المثال الثالث

'photographic', the stress is on the third

......... الضغط على المقطع الثالث

syllable, so you can hear how much

لذلك تستطيع ان تسمع مدى

influence stress has on this word family.

تأثير الضغط على عائلة الكلمات هذه

To correctly pronounce all of these

لكى تنطق كل

words correctly you need to pay

هذه الكلمات بطريقة صحيحة تحتاج ان

attention to the stressed syllable

تنتبه الى المقاطع الظاهرة (المضغوطة)

and that's true for a whole range of

وهذا صحيح لكل سلسلة

different word families. 'Economic', 'analyze',

من عائلات الكلمات المختلفة

'nature, 'politics', all of these words and

كل هذة الكلمات و

their word families are influenced by

وعائلاتها (مشتقاتها) تتاثر ب

stress in different ways.
