In this lesson, we're going to talk about

American English and British English.

Do you need to know the difference?

Which one is right?

Which one should you use?

أيهما يجب عليك أن تستخدم؟

And which one do I use?

وأيهما أستخدم أنا؟

These are all questions that I get asked

كل هذه الأسئلة

all the time by my students!

يطرحها علي طلابي باستمرار

And in this video I'm going to answer them for you.

So the first question.

السؤال الأول:

Do you need to know the difference

هل أنت بحاجة لمعرفة الفارق

between American English and British English?

بين الإنجليزية الأمريكية والبريطانية؟

Well you need to know that there are differences.

حسنا! عليك أن تعرف أن هناك فوارق بينهما

There are a few different spelling rules, grammar rules

هناك فوارق قليلة في طريقة التهجي، وقواعد النحو

and of course there's different accents and vocabulary.

وبالتأكيد هناك طريقة نطق وأيضا مفردات مختلفة

You need to know that there are those differences

عليك ان تعرف أن هذه الاختلافات موجودة

but that doesn't necessarily mean that you need to

لكن هذا لا يعني بالضرورة أن

study and learn them.

تذاكرهم وتتعلمهم جميعا

The truth is that all English speakers understand

الحقيقة أن كل المتحدثين بالإنجليزية

each other, despite the differences in their English.

يفهمون بعضهم البعض برغم اختلاف لهجاتهم الإنجليزية

We watch each other's movies,

نحن نشاهد أفلام بعضنا البعض

we read each other's books, we work with each other,

نقرأ كتب بعضنا البعض، ونعمل معا

we read each other's news.

ونتابع الأخبار فيما بيننا

So we're often exposed to the different

نحن مطلعون على تلك الاختلافات

words and spellings that other English speakers use..

في الكلمات والتهجي التي يستخدمها الآخرون

which brings me to the next question.

هذا ما ينقلني للسؤال التالي

Should you care about the differences

هل يجب عليك أن تهتم بالاختلافات

between American English and British English?

بين الإنجليزية الأمريكية والبريطانية؟

Maybe.

ربما

It depends on why you're learning English.

هذا يتوقف على سبب تعلمك للغة الإنجليزية

You only need to care about the differences

عليك أن تهتم بالاختلافات

if you're studying for an English exam,

إذا كنت تستعد لامتحان في اللغة الإنجليزية

you're applying for or attending an English university

أو كنت تتقدم لإحدى الجامعات الإنجليزية

or you're using English professionally for your job.

أو كنت تستخدم اللغة الإنجليزية في عملك بشكل متخصص

Usually in these situations,

عادة في هذه المواقف

you need to pay attention to the spelling

أنت تحتاج للاهتمام بطريقة التهجي

and the grammar rules because it can affect

وقواعد النحو، لأنها قد تؤثر

your score

في تقديرك

or even affect your reputation.

وربما تؤثر في سمعتك

So if this sounds like you, then you

لذلك، إذا كان ذلك ينطبق عليك

definitely do need to think about whether

فأنت بالتأكيد تحتاج أن تقرر

British English or American English

هل تستخدم الإنجليزية الأمريكية أو البريطانية

is the right choice for you.

وأيهما الاختيار الأصوب لك

So which one is right?

إذن، أيهما الأصوب؟

Which one should you use?

أيهما يجب أن تستخدم؟

Its a hard question for me to answer.

بالنسبة لي، هو سؤال صعب

You need to think about you and your situation.

عليك أن تفكر في نفسك وفي موقفك

Are you living in an English-speaking country?

هل أنت تعيش في بلد تتحدث الإنجليزية؟

Then of course,

هنا بكل تأكيد

use the type of English that is used there.

استخدم نوع الإنجليزية المستخدم هناك

But maybe you're planning to study

لكن إذا كنت تنوي الدراسة

in an English-speaking country.

في بلد تتحدث الإنجليزية

Which one?

أهتم بأيهما؟

If it's America, then you should be training

إذا كانت أمريكا فعليك أن تتدرب

to learn American English.

لتعلم الإنجليزية الأمريكية

But if not, then focus on British English

وإذا لم تكن، فعليك التركيز على الإنجليزية البريطانية

because most other English-speaking countries

لأن معظم البلاد الأخرى التي تتحدث الإنجليزية

use British English grammar and spelling standards.

تستخدم القواعد البريطانية في التهجي والنحو

Do you speak to a lot of clients or colleagues

هل تتحدث إلى الكثير من العملاء أو الزملاء

who are from America or from the UK?

من أمريكا أو المملكة المتحدة؟

This can help you to decide whether you need to

سيساعدك هذا في لتقرر حاجتك

study American English or British English.

لدراسة الانجليزية الامريكية او الانجليزية البريطانية

You might think that one type of English is easier

ربما تعتقد أن أحدهما أسهل

than the other

من الأخرى

and that can also tell you which one you should study.

وذلك أيضا سيساعدك في الاختيار بينهما

You could choose any of these reasons

يمكنك الاختيار على أساس أي من هذه الأسباب

to help you decide which type of English to study.

لمساعدتك لكي تقرر اي نوع من الانجليزية سوف تدرس

It definitely makes sense to focus on lessons,

بكل تأكيد إنه من المنطقي التركيز في الدروس

books and teachers that use one type of English.

الكتب والمعلمين الذين يستخدمون نفس اللهجة

It just makes it a little less confusing

لان المدج بين اللهجتين قد يسبب القليل من الارتباك

while you're learning.

اثناء التعلم

So focus on either British or American English

لذلك، ركز على أحدهما

but remember that the other one exists.

لكن تذكر أن اللهجة الثانية موجودة

You don't have to choose one and then

لا يجب عليك أن تختار إحداها

never, ever, ever use the other.

ثم لا تستخدم الأخرى أبدا أبدا أبدا

In fact, that's almost impossible!

حقيقة، هذا الأمر مستحيل عمليا

And also one is not more important than the other.

ولا توجد لهجة أهم من الأخرى

But

لكن

for you, there is probably one that is more relevant

بالنسبة لك ربما تكون إحداها هي الأنسب

to your situation.

لظروفك

And that's the one that you should focus on

وإنها اللهجة التي يجب التركيز عليها

- that you should study.

ودراستها

Another question that I often get asked is

سؤال آخر يُطرح عليّ كثيرا

"What type of English do I use?"

أي لهجة تستخدمينها؟

Well I'm Australian and here in Australia we follow

أنا استرالية. وهنا في أستراليا

British English rules for spelling and grammar.

نحن نستخدم القواعد البريطانية في التهجي والنحو

And that's actually true for most

في الواقع إن هذا هو السائد في معظم البلاد التي ..

English-speaking countries outside of America.

تتحدث الإنجليزية خارج أمريكا

Of course, all English-speaking countries have

بالطبع، كل البلاد التي تتحدث الإنجليزية

some unique vocabulary and slang

لديها مفرداتها ولغتها العامية

so there will be different words that you come across

لذلك فإنك ستصادف كلمات مختلفة

that are used for the same thing.

تستخدم لنفس الشيء

Finally, it's important for you to know

أخيرا، من المهم لك أن تعرف

that there are some native English speakers who get

أن هناك بعض المتحدثين الإنجليزية

very protective about their language and they will

الحريصين جدا على لغتهم

argue about which way is right and which way is wrong.

وسيجادلون حول أيهما صواب أو خطأ

But most of you,

لكن لا يجب عليكم

you don't need to worry about this conversation

أن تنزعجوا من تلك المحاورات..

and these arguments and discussions about

والجدالات والمناقشات حول

whose English is better

أي لهجة إنجليزية أفضل

or whose English is right or wrong.

أو أيهما صواب أو خطأ

What's important for you, is that you

الأهم بالنسبة لك

keep building your English skills and

أن تستمر في تنمية مهارات اللغة الإنجليزية

you practise communicating clearly and confidently.

وتتمرن على التواصل بوضوح وثقة

Accept that there are different types of English

تقبل وجود أنواع مختلفة من اللغة الإنجليزية

and that's no reason to get stressed or anxious.

ولا يوجد مبرر أن تكون متوترا أو قلقا

It just is how it is.

إنها كما هي فقط

The most important thing

الشيء الأهم هو...

is that you focus on communicating your ideas

أن تركز على التعبير عن أفكارك

and your feelings clearly in English.

ومشاعرك باللغة الإنجليزية بشكل واضح

But I do think that it's important to know what

لكني أعتقد أنه من المهم أن تعرف

the differences

between British and American English are

ما هي الاختلافات

بين الإنجليزية البريطانية والأمريكية

so that you know how to recognise them.
