When I left Iran, I was 15 years old.

အီရန်ကနေ ကျွန်မ ထွက်လာခဲ့တုန်းက၊ အသက် ၁၅ နှစ်ရှိပါပြီ။

I had only taken with me a suitcase of clothes and a few books.

အဝတ်သေတ္တာနဲ့ စာအုပ်အနည်းငယ်ပဲ ကျွန်မနဲ့အတူ ယူလာခဲ့တယ်။

Or so I thought.

ဒါမှမဟုတ် ဒီလို ထင်ခဲ့တာပေါ့။

I was wrong.

ကျွန်မ မှားသွားတယ်။

I had taken with me, in me, an invaluable treasure:

တန်ဖိုးမဖြတ်နိုင်တဲ့ ရတနာတစ်ပါးဖြစ်တဲ့ ပါးရှားဘာသာစကားကို

the Persian language.

ကျွန်မနဲ့အတူ ယူလာခဲ့တာပါ။

A millennium-old language

ကဗျာ ဘာသာစကားအဖြစ်

that emerged from the beginning as the language of poetry.

အစကတည်းက ပေါ်ထွက်လာခဲ့တဲ့ နှစ်ထောင်ချီနေတဲ့ ဘာသာစကားဟောင်းပါ။

Persian was the language of my childhood paradise.

ပါးရှားဘာသာစကားက ကျွန်မရဲ့ ကလေးဘဝ သုခဘုံရဲ့ ဘာသာစကားပါ။

The language of tales and nursery rhymes.

ပုံပြင်တွေနဲ့ ကလေးကဗျာတေးတွေရဲ့ ဘာသာစကားပါ။

But I had to leave the Garden of Eden.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်မ ဧဒင်ဥယျာဉ်ကနေ ထွက်ခဲ့ရတယ်။

It is through the experience of exile that I came to realize

ပြည်ပြေး အတွေ့အကြုံကနေ ကျွန်မ နားလည်လာခဲ့တာက၊

that what I had lost was, yes, a country,

ကျွန်မ ဆုံးၡုံးခဲ့တာက ဟုတ်ပါတယ်၊ တိုင်းပြည်တစ်ခု၊

a house, a garden.

အိမ်တစ်လုံး၊ ဥယျာဉ်တစ်ခုဆိုတာပါ။

I had been severed from my land, from the landscapes of Iran,

ကျွန်မရဲ့ မြေ၊အီရန်ရဲ့ တောတောင်ရှုခင်းတွေ၊ နှင်းတွေဖုံးလွှမ်းနေတဲ့

from the reassuring presence of Mount Damavand,

ဒမာဗန်တောင်ရဲ့ စိတ်အေးဖို့အားပေးတဲ့ တည်ရှိမှုကနေ

covered with snow.

ကျွန်မ အဆက်ပြတ်သွားခဲ့တာပါ။

But nobody could bereave me of my motherland

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်မရဲ့ အမိမြေက ကျွန်မရဲ့ မိခင် ဘာသာစကားဆိုရင်၊

if my motherland was my mother tongue.

ကျွန်မကို ဘယ်သူမှ ဆုံးရှုံးမသွားနိုင်ဘူးလေ။

Within me what was alive was the language.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ကိုယ်ထဲမှာ အသက်ရှင်နေတာက ဒီဘာသာစကားပဲ။

What makes me Iranian is Persian.

ကျွန်မကို အီရန်လူမျိုး ဖြစ်စေတာက ပါရှားဘာသာစကားပါ။

Specifically, the treasure of Persian poetry.

အထူးသဖြင့် ပါရှား ကဗျာစာပေရဲ့ ရတနာပါ။

So I started reading poetry,

ဒါကြောင့် ကဗျာစာပေတွေကို စဖတ်ခဲ့ပြီး

learning poems by heart,

ကျွန်မ သွားလေရာ ယူသွားနိုင်အောင်၊

so that I could take them everywhere with me.

။ ကဗျာတွေကို အလွတ်ကျက်မှတ်ခဲ့တယ်။

So that I could feel home wherever I go.

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်မသွားလေရာ နေရာကို အိမ်လို့ခံစားရတယ်။

I embarked on a poetic journey that is still going on.

ဆက်သွားနေဆဲဖြစ်တဲ့ ကဗျာ ခရီးစဉ်တစ်ခုကို စတင်ခဲ့တယ်။

My guide on this journey was no less than Rumi,

ဒီခရီးစဉ်မှာ ကျွန်မရဲ့ လမ်းညွှန်ကတော့ ၁၃ ရာစုက ထူးခြားနက်နဲတဲ့

the Persian mystic poet of the 13th century.

ပါရှန်း ကဗျာစာဆို ရူမီထက်မလျော့ဘူးပေါ့။

In the prologue of his opus magnum,

သူ့ရဲ့ ကြီးကျယ်တဲ့ ကဗျာလက်ရာရဲ့ အချီးမှာ၊

comparing his poetic work to the song of the reed flute,

သူ့ရဲ့ ကဗျာ လက်ရာကို ကျူရိုး ပုလွေ တေးသီချင်းနဲ့ နှိုင်းယှဉ်ရင်း၊

he says,

သူ ပြောတာက

(Reciting in Persian)

( ပါးရှားဘာသာဖြင့် ရွတ်ဆိုခြင်း)

"Listen to this reed flute.

“ဒီကျူရိုး ပုလွေကို နားဆင်ပါ၊

Listen how it complains

ပုလွေ ညည်းညူပုံကို နားထောင်ပါ၊

Telling the tale of separations

ခွဲခွာခြင်းတွေရဲ့ ပုံပြင်ကို ပြောပြနေတယ်၊

Saying,

ကျူရိုး အိပ်ရာကနေ

Ever since I was severed from the reed bed

ဖြတ်တောက်ခံရတဲ့ အချိန်ကစပြီး ပြောနေတယ်၊

Men and women have moaned in unison with my lament

ငါ့ရဲ့ ပူဆွေးမှုနဲ့အတူ အမျိုးသားတွေနဲ့ အမျိုးသမီးတွေက သံပြိုင် ညည်းတွားခဲ့ကြတယ်၊

I want a bosom torn by separation

ခွဲခွာခြင်းကနေ စုတ်ဖြဲလိုက်တဲ့ ရင်ဘတ်တစ်ခု ငါ လိုချင်မိ၊

That I may unfold the pain of love-desire.

ချစ်မေတ္တာ လိုအင်ရဲ့ နာကျင်မှုကို ဖွင့်ဟနိုင်ကောင်းရဲ့၊

Whoever is left far from the origin

ဇာတိအရပ်ကနေ ဝေးဝေးမှာ ကျန်ရစ်ခဲ့သူတိုင်းဟာ

Longs to return to the time of union"

ပေါင်းစည်းချိန်အတွက် အပြန်ကို တောင့်တကြလေရဲ့။”

I remember quite vividly the first time I heard those lines.

ဒီစာကြောင်းတွေကို ပထမဆုံးအကြိမ် ကြားခဲ့တာကို ကျွန်မ အထင်းသား မှတ်မိသေးတယ်။

It was in 1982,

ဒါက ၁၉၈၂ ခုနှစ်

during the Iran-Iraq war when Tehran was bombarded.

အီရန်-အီရတ်စစ်ပွဲအတွင်း တီဟီရန် ဗုံးကြဲတိုက်ခိုက်ခံရချိန်ကပါ။

There was a circle of poets and poetry lovers

ကဗျာစာပေကို ဖတ်ရှု၊ နားထောင်ဖို့ အန္တရာယ်တွေ ရှိနေပါလျက်နဲ့

who would gather every Friday,

သောကြာနေ့တိုင်း စုဝေးချင်ကြတဲ့

notwithstanding the risks,

ကဗျာစာဆိုတွေနဲ့ ကဗျာစာပေ ချစ်သူတွေရဲ့

to read and listen to poetry.

အသိုင်းအဝိုင်းတစ်ခုရှိခဲ့တယ်။

My father took me to those gatherings.

အဖေက ကျွန်မကို ဒီတွေ့ဆုံပွဲတွေဆီ ခေါ်သွားတယ်။

I didn’t understand, far from it, all the poetry I heard in those days,

အဲဒီနေ့တွေတုန်းက ကျွန်မ ကြားခဲ့သမျှ ကဗျာတွေကို နားကိုမလည်ခဲ့ဘဲ၊

and many lines have left my memory.

စာကြောင်းအများအပြားကတော့ ကျွန်မရဲ့ မှတ်ဉာဏ်ထဲမှာ ကျန်ရစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

But those lines by Rumi,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ရူမီရဲ့ ဒီစာကြောင်းတွေကိုတော့

oh my God.

အို၊ ဘုရားသခင်ပေါ့။

A whole world opened in front of me.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ရှေ့မှာ တစ်ကမ္ဘာလုံးက ပွင့်နေတယ်။

And Rumi became my companion for life.

ပြီးတော့ ရူမီဟာ ကျွန်မရဲ့ ဘဝအတွက် အဖော်ဖြစ်လာခဲ့တယ်။

My companion of exile.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ပြည်ပြေး အဖော်ပါ။

So in exile I read his poetry,

ဒါနဲ့ ပြည်ပြေးအခြေအနေမှာ သူ့ရဲ့ ကဗျာစာပေကို ဖတ်ပြီး

I listened to the reed,

ကျူပင်တွေကို နားထောင်

listened to the reed again and again

ကျူပင်တွေကို ထပ်ခါတလဲလဲ နားထောင်ကာ

and said those poems aloud.

အဲဒီကဗျာတွေကို အသံကျယ်ကျယ်နဲ့ ဆိုခဲ့တယ်။

I wrote my PhD thesis and two books on his works.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ပါရဂူဘွဲ့ စာတမ်းနဲ့ သူ့လက်ရာ တွေအကြောင်း စာအုပ် နှစ်အုပ် ရေးခဲ့တယ်။

I translated many of his poems.

သူ့ရဲ့ကဗျာတွေ အများကြီးကို ဘာသာပြန်ခဲ့တယ်။

It is said that Rumi's work is an ocean from which shore no traveler returns.

ရူမီရဲ့ လက်ရာက ဘယ်ခရီးသွားမှ ဒီကနေ ပြန်မလာတဲ့ သမုဒ္ဒရာတစ်စင်းလို့ ဆိုတယ်။

I can definitely bear witness to that.

ဒါကို ကျွန်မ တကယ် သက်သေခံနိုင်ပါတယ်။

What does the poet mean with this magnificent prologue?

ဒီခမ်းနားထည်ဝါတဲ့ အချီးနဲ့အတူ ကဗျာဆရာက ဘာကိုဆိုလိုတာလဲ။

“Listen to this reed.”

“ဒီကျူရိုးကို နားထောင်ပါ“တဲ့။

What does he want us to listen to?

သူက ကျွန်မတို့ကို ဘာကို နားထောင်စေချင်တာလဲ။

He evokes the pain of exile,

သူက ကိုယ်နဲ့ နှီးနွယ်နေပြီး ကိုယ် ချစ်မြတ်နိုးရတဲ့သူတွေနဲ့

of being separated from where you belong and those you love.

ကွဲကွာနေရတဲ့ ပြည်ပြေး နာကျင်မှုတွေကို နှိုးဆွပေးတယ်။

And he insists that his song is the song of all exiles.

သူက သူ့သီချင်းဟာ ပြည်ပြေးအားလုံးရဲ့ သီချင်းပါလို့ အခိုင်အမာဆိုတယ်။

He invites all of us

သူက ကဗျာလင်္ကာ တောင်ပံတွေပေါ်က

to accompany him on the return journey

အပြန်ခရီးမှာ ကျူရိုး ပုလွေသီချင်းကနေတစ်ဆင့်၊

on the wings of poetry,

ကျွန်မတို့အားလုံးကို

through the song of the reed flute.

သူနဲ့အတူ လိုက်ပါလာဖို့ ဖိတ်ခေါ်တာပါ။

And indeed, his poetry is sheer music.

တကယ်တော့ သူ့ရဲ့ ကဗျာလင်္ကာက တေးဂီတကြီးပါ။

Like the reed flute it tells and it whispers to the soul

ကျူရို ပုလွေက ပြောသလိုပဲ၊ ဒါက အမေ့ခံ ဇာတ်လမ်းတစ်ပုဒ်ကို

a forgotten story.

စိတ်ဝိညာဉ်ကို တီးတိုးပြောလိုက်တာပါ။

Rumi himself had fled his native town

ရူမီကိုယ်တိုင် မွန်ဂိုတွေရဲ့ ခြိမ်းခြောက်မှုကြောင့်

in today's Afghanistan

သူ အလွန်ငယ်ရွယ်စဉ်က၊

when he was very young because of the Mongol’s threat.

ဒီနေ့ခေတ် အာဖဂန်နစ္စတန်က သူ့ရဲ့ဇာတိမြို့ကနေ ထွက်ပြေးခဲ့ရတယ်။

He left his homeland as a child, never to return.

ကလေးဘဝက သူ့ရဲ့ဇာတိမြေကနေ ထွက်သွားပြီး သူ ဘယ်တော့မှ ပြန်မလာခဲ့ဘူး။

He had wandered from town to town until he took refuge in Anatolia.

အာနာတိုလီယာမှာ မခိုလှုံခင်အထိ၊တစ်မြို့ကနေ တစ်မြို့ကို လှည့်လည်သွားလာခဲ့တယ်။

There, in that foreign land,

အဲဒီ၊ တိုင်းတစ်ပါးမှာ

he kept reading Persian poetry,

ပါးရှား ကဗျာစာပေကို ဆက်လက်ဖတ်ရှုနေခဲ့ပြီး

he kept to his mother tongue,

မိခင်ဘာသာစကားကို သိမ်းထားကာ

and he taught it to his own children.

သူ့သားသမီးတွေကို သင်ကြားပေးခဲ့တယ်။

One day he met Shams of Tabriz in Konya,

တစ်နေ့မှာတော့ ရူမီဟာ ကွန်ယာမှာ တာဘရိဇ်မြို့သား ရှမ်းစ်နဲ တွေ့ဆုံခဲ့တယ်၊

that city in which Rumi had become a very respectable preacher

အဲဒီမှာ သူဟာ အလွန်သိက္ခာရှိတဲ့ တရားဟောဆရာတစ်ယောက်နဲ့ ဘာသာရေးဆိုင်ရာ

and a spiritual guide.

လမ်းညွှန်တစ်ယောက် ဖြစ်လာခဲ့တယ်။

Shams initiated Rumi to mystical music and dance,

ရှမ်းစ်က ရူမီကို လျှို့ဝှက်နက်နဲ့တဲ့ တေးဂီတနဲ့ အကကို အစပြုပေးခဲ့ပြီး

and above all, to the religion of love.

ဒါတွေအားလုံးအထက်မှာတော့ ချစ်မေတ္တာ ဘာသာတရားပါ။

With him, Rumi lived a series of bewildering experiences

သူနဲ့အတူ၊ ရူမီဟာ သူ့ကို ထွန်းလင်းပေးပြီး သူကိုယ်တိုင်ရဲ့ အစစ်အမှန်ကို သတိပြုမိစေတဲ့

that illuminated him and awakened him to his true self.

စိတ်ရှုပ်ထွေးစေတဲ့အတွေ့အကြုံ အစဉ်အတန်းကြီးထဲမှာ နေထိုင်ခဲ့တယ်။

With Shams, Rumi became a poet.

ရှမ်းစ်နဲ့အတူ ရူမီဟာ ကဗျာစာဆိုတစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်လာခဲ့တယ်။

About this inner transmutation, he says,

ဒီအတွင်းပိုင်း အသွင်ကူးပြောင်းမှုနဲ့ ပတ်သက်ပြီး သူ ပြောတာက–

"I was dead,

“ငါ သေဆုံးသွားတယ်၊

alive I became.

ငါ အသက်ရှင်လာတယ်။

I was tears.

ငါ မျက်ရည်တွေဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

Laughter I became.

ငါ ရယ်သံဖြစ်လာတယ်။

The rain of love came upon me,

ချစ်မေတ္တာမိုးက ငါ့အပေါ် သွန်းပြီး

and my joy eternal became.”

ငါက ထာဝရ ရွှင်လန်းမှု ဖြစ်လာတယ်“တဲ့။

(ပါးရှားဘာသာစကားဖြင့် ရွတ်ဆိုခြင်း)

Through his lyric poetry,

သူ့ရဲ့ ခံစားချက်ပါတဲ့ ကဗျာလင်္ကာကနေ၊

through the innumerable stories he tells,

သူပြောတဲ့ မရေမတွက်နိုင်တဲ့ ဇာတ်လမ်းတွေကနေ၊

Rumi points not only to his own individual experience,

ရူမီဟာ သူ့ရဲ့ ကိုယ်ပိုင် အတွေ့အကြုံကို ထောက်ပြရုံမက၊

but he reminds us of our situation in life.

ဘဝထဲက ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ အခြေအနေကိုပါ သတိရစေပါတယ်။

Whoever we are,

ကျွန်မတို့ ဘယ်သူဖြစ်ဖြစ်၊

wherever we live,

ကျွန်မတို့ ဘယ်မှာပဲ နေနေ၊

we are in exile.

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ပြည်ပြေးပါ။

Because as celestial souls, we belong to another world,

ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့ မြင့်မြတ်တဲ့ ဝိဉာဉ်တွေအနေနဲ့၊ ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့

to a lost paradise to which we shall return,

ဝိညာဉ်ရေးရာ အသိနဲ့ လူ့လောကကို ဖွံ့ဖြိုးတိုးတက်စေခဲ့သရွေ့၊

provided we have developed our spiritual awareness

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ နောက်ထပ် ကမ္ဘာတစ်ခု၊ ကျွန်မတို့ ပြန်သွားရမယ့် ပျောက်ဆုံးနေတဲ့

and our humanity.

သုခဘုံတစ်ခုနဲ့ ထိုက်တန်တာကြောင့်ပါ။

Through the beauty of his words,

ရူမီဟာ သူ့စကားလုံးတွေရဲ့ အလှတရားကနေ၊

Rumi makes us feel all the prism of human emotions.

လူ့စိတ်ခံမှုအားလုံးရဲ့ ရောင်စဉ်ကို ကျွန်မတို့ကိုခံစားမိစေတယ်။

He makes us taste

ကဗျာလင်္ကာအားလုံးက လုပ်သင့်သလိုပဲ၊

earthly desires and celestial hopes as all real poetry should do.

လောကီ အလိုဆန္ဒတွေနဲ့ မြင့်မြတ်တဲ့ မျှော်လင့်ချက်တွေကို မြည်းစမ်းစေခဲ့တယ်။

And over and over again, he returns to the centrality of love

တကယ့် ကဗျာစာဆိုတိုင်း လုပ်သင့်သလိုပဲ၊ ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ၏ ဗဟိုအချက်အချာဆီ

as every real poet should do.

အထပ်ထပ်၊ အခါခါ သူ ပြန်သွားတယ်။

And that is why we need the poets.

ဒါကြောင့် ကျွန်မတို့ ကဗျာစာဆိုတွေ လိုအပ်တာပါ။

To remember who we are and where we belong.

ကျွန်မတို့ ဘယ်သူဆိုတာ၊ ဘယ်နေရာနဲ့ သက်ဆိုင်တာကို သတိရဖို့ပါ။

Poetry has the power to transmute reality

ကဗျာစာပေက အရှိတရားကို ကြွယ်ဝပြီး အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရှိတဲ့ အရာတစ်ခုအဖြစ်

into something rich and meaningful.

အသွင်ပြောင်းပေးနိုင်စွမ်းရှိတယ်။

To me, it was life-saving.

ကျွန်မအတွက်တော့ အသက်ကယ်တင်ခြင်းပေါ့။

When we look at the world,

တစ်ခါတလေ ဒီလောက၊

at the inhumanity of humanity sometimes,

လူ့လောကရဲ့ လူမဆန်မှုကို ကြည့်ရှုတဲ့အခါ၊

how not to feel in exile, indeed?

ပြည်ပြေးအခြေအနေကို မခံစားရတာက တကယ်တော့ ဘယ်လိုလဲ။

How not to cry on "Love's Labour's Lost?"

”Love’s Labour’s Lost?” ” မှာ မငိုတာက ဘယ်လိုလဲ။

How not to be desperate and disoriented?

စိတ်ပျက်၊ လမ်းပျောက် မဖြစ်တာက ဘယ်လိုလဲ။

Poetry can help us through the darkness of times.

ကဗျာစာပေက ခေတ်ကာလတွေရဲ့ မှောင်မိုက်မှုကနေ ကျွန်မတို့ကို ကူညီနိုင်တယ်။

As do all the arts if they are spiritually oriented.

အနုပညာအားလုံးက စိတ်ပိုင်းအရ ဦးစားပေးထားသလိုပါ။

So reading,

ဒီတော့ ကဗျာစာပေကို ဖတ်ရှုတာ၊

rendering,

ပြန်ဆိုတာ၊

writing, reciting poetry is a therapy.

ရေးသားတာ၊ ရွတ်ဆိုတာက ကုထုံးတစ်ခုပါ။

It connects us with what is most essential in life,

ကဗျာစာပေက ဘဝထဲက ပဓာနအကျဆုံးအရာနဲ့ ကျွန်မတို့ကို ဆက်စပ်ပေးပြီး

and that is why it should be cherished.

ဒါကြောင့်ပဲ ကဗျာစာပေကို ချစ်မြတ်နိုးသင့်ပါတယ်။
