When I left Iran, I was 15 years old.

وقتی ایران را ترک کردم، ۱۵ سال داشتم.

I had only taken with me a suitcase of clothes and a few books.

فقط با خودم چمدان لباس‌ها و مقداری کتاب برده بودم.

Or so I thought.

یا اینطور فکر می‌کردم.

I was wrong.

من اشتباه می‌کردم.

I had taken with me, in me, an invaluable treasure:

گنجینه گران‌بهایی، را با خود، برده بودم:

the Persian language.

زبان فارسی.

A millennium-old language

زبانی هزار ساله

that emerged from the beginning as the language of poetry.

که از ابتدا به عنوان زبان شعر ظهور کرد.

Persian was the language of my childhood paradise.

فارسی زبان بهشت کودکی من بود.

The language of tales and nursery rhymes.

زبان قصه‌ها و قافیه‌های مهد کودک.

But I had to leave the Garden of Eden.

اما مجبور شدم باغ عدن را ترک کنم.

It is through the experience of exile that I came to realize

از طریق تجربه تبعید بود که فهمیدم

that what I had lost was, yes, a country,

آنچه از دست داده بودم، بله، یک کشور،

a house, a garden.

یک خانه، یک باغ بود.

I had been severed from my land, from the landscapes of Iran,

من از سرزمینم، از مناظر ایران،

from the reassuring presence of Mount Damavand,

از حضور اطمینان بخش کوه پوشیده از برف دماوند،

covered with snow.

جدا شده بودم.

But nobody could bereave me of my motherland

اما اگر وطنم زبان مادری من بود

if my motherland was my mother tongue.

هیچکس نمی‌توانست من‌ را از سرزمین مادری من رها کند.

Within me what was alive was the language.

آنچه در درون من زنده بود زبان بود.

What makes me Iranian is Persian.

آنچه من را ایرانی می‌کند فارسی است.

Specifically, the treasure of Persian poetry.

به طور مشخص، گنجینه شعر فارسی.

So I started reading poetry,

پس شروع کردم به شعرخوانی،

learning poems by heart,

شعرها را از دل یاد می‌گرفتم،

so that I could take them everywhere with me.

تا بتوانم آنها را همه جا با خود ببرم.

So that I could feel home wherever I go.

طوری که هر جا که می‌روم احساس می کنم خانه هستم.

I embarked on a poetic journey that is still going on.

سفری شاعرانه را آغاز کردم که هنوز ادامه دارد.

My guide on this journey was no less than Rumi,

راهنمای من در این سفر دست کمی از مولانا،

the Persian mystic poet of the 13th century.

شاعر عارف پارسی قرن سیزدهم نداشت.

In the prologue of his opus magnum,

او در پیش‌گفتار اپوس مگنوم،

comparing his poetic work to the song of the reed flute,

کار شاعرانه‌اش را با آواز نی فلوت مقایسه می‌کند،

he says,

او می گوید،

(Reciting in Persian)

( تلاوت به زبان فارسی)

"Listen to this reed flute.

«بشنو از نی.

Listen how it complains

چون حکایت می‌کند

Telling the tale of separations

و از جدایی‌ها شکایت می‌کند

Saying,

می گوید،

Ever since I was severed from the reed bed

که از نیستان تا من را ببریده‌اند

Men and women have moaned in unison with my lament

از نفیرم مرد وزن نالیده اند

I want a bosom torn by separation

سینه خواهم شرحه شرحه از فراق

That I may unfold the pain of love-desire.

تا بگویم شرح درد اشتیاق.

Whoever is left far from the origin

هر کسی کو دور ماند از اصل خویش

Longs to return to the time of union"

باز جوید روزگار وصل خویش»

I remember quite vividly the first time I heard those lines.

اولین باری که آن سطرها را شنیدم به خوبی به یاد دارم.

It was in 1982,

در سال ۱۹۸۲،

during the Iran-Iraq war when Tehran was bombarded.

در جریان جنگ ایران و عراق بود که تهران بمباران شد.

There was a circle of poets and poetry lovers

حلقه‌ای از شاعران و عاشقان شعر بودند

who would gather every Friday,

که هر جمعه علی‌رغم خطرات،

notwithstanding the risks,

برای خواندن و شنیدن شعر،

to read and listen to poetry.

دور هم جمع می‌شدند.

My father took me to those gatherings.

پدرم من را به آن مجالس برد.

I didn’t understand, far from it, all the poetry I heard in those days,

من به دور از آن، تمام شعرهایی را که در آن روزها شنیدم نفهمیدم،

and many lines have left my memory.

و سطرهای زیادی از خاطرم مانده است.

But those lines by Rumi,

اما آن سطرهای مولانا،

oh my God.

وای خدای من.

A whole world opened in front of me.

یک دنیا در مقابلم باز شد.

And Rumi became my companion for life.

و مولانا همدم عمر من شد.

My companion of exile.

رفیق تبعید من.

So in exile I read his poetry,

پس در غربت شعر او را خواندم،

I listened to the reed,

به نی گوش دادم،

listened to the reed again and again

بارها و بارها به نی گوش دادم

and said those poems aloud.

و آن اشعار را با صدای بلند گفتم.

I wrote my PhD thesis and two books on his works.

پایان نامه دکتری و دو کتاب درباره آثار او نوشتم.

I translated many of his poems.

بسیاری از شعرهای او را ترجمه کردم.

It is said that Rumi's work is an ocean from which shore no traveler returns.

می‌گویند اثر مولانا اقیانوسی است که هیچ مسافری از آن ساحل بر نمی‌گردد.

I can definitely bear witness to that.

من قطعا می‌توانم شاهد آن باشم.

What does the poet mean with this magnificent prologue?

منظور شاعر از این مقدمه باشکوه چیست؟

“Listen to this reed.”

«به این نی گوش کن.»

What does he want us to listen to?

از ما می‌خواهد به چه چیزی گوش کنیم؟

He evokes the pain of exile,

او درد غربت،

of being separated from where you belong and those you love.

جدا شدن از جایی که به آن تعلق دارید و کسانی که دوستشان دارید را تداعی می‌کند.

And he insists that his song is the song of all exiles.

و اصرار دارد که ترانه او سرود تمام تبعیدیان است.

He invites all of us

او همه ما را دعوت می‌کند

to accompany him on the return journey

تا با آواز نی نی

on the wings of poetry,

او را در سفر بازگشت،

through the song of the reed flute.

بر بال‌های شعر همراهی کنیم.

And indeed, his poetry is sheer music.

در واقع، شعر او موسیقی محض است.

Like the reed flute it tells and it whispers to the soul

مثل فلوت نی می‌گوید و داستانی فراموش شده را

a forgotten story.

با روح زمزمه می‌کند.

Rumi himself had fled his native town

خود مولانا در سنین جوانی

in today's Afghanistan

به دلیل تهدید مغول از

when he was very young because of the Mongol’s threat.

زادگاهش در افغانستان امروزی گریخته بود.

He left his homeland as a child, never to return.

او در کودکی وطن را ترک کرد، دیگر برنگشت.

He had wandered from town to town until he took refuge in Anatolia.

او شهر به شهر سرگردان بود تا اینکه به آناتولی پناه برد.

There, in that foreign land,

آنجا، در آن دیار بیگانه،

he kept reading Persian poetry,

شعر فارسی می‌خواند،

he kept to his mother tongue,

به زبان مادری خود می‌ماند،

and he taught it to his own children.

و به فرزندان خود می‌آموخت.

One day he met Shams of Tabriz in Konya,

روزی در قونیه با شمس تبریزی ملاقات کرد،

that city in which Rumi had become a very respectable preacher

شهری که مولانا در آن واعظی بسیار محترم

and a spiritual guide.

و راهنمای روحانی شده بود.

Shams initiated Rumi to mystical music and dance,

شمس مولانا را به موسیقی و رقص عرفانی،

and above all, to the religion of love.

و بالاتر از همه، دین عشق آغاز کرد.

With him, Rumi lived a series of bewildering experiences

مولانا با او، مجموعه‌ای از تجربیات گیج کننده را تجربه کرد

that illuminated him and awakened him to his true self.

که او را روشن کرد و او را به خود واقعی خود بیدار کرد.

With Shams, Rumi became a poet.

با شمس، مولانا شاعر شد.

About this inner transmutation, he says,

"I was dead,

«مرده بودم،

alive I became.

زنده شدم.

I was tears.

اشک بودم.

Laughter I became.

خنده شدم،

The rain of love came upon me,

باران عشق بر من آمد،

and my joy eternal became.”

و شادی من جاودانه شد.»

Through his lyric poetry,

مولانا از طریق غزلیات خود،

through the innumerable stories he tells,

از طریق داستان‌های بی شماری که می‌گوید،

Rumi points not only to his own individual experience,

تنها به تجربه فردی خود اشاره می‌کند،

but he reminds us of our situation in life.

بلکه موقعیت ما را در زندگی به ما یادآوری می‌کند.

Whoever we are,

هر که هستیم،

wherever we live,

هر کجا زندگی می‌کنیم،

we are in exile.

در غربت هستیم.

Because as celestial souls, we belong to another world,

زیرا ما به عنوان ارواح آسمانی، به دنیای دیگری تعلق داریم،

to a lost paradise to which we shall return,

به بهشت گمشده‌ای که به آن باز خواهیم گشت،

provided we have developed our spiritual awareness

مشروط بر اینکه آگاهی معنوی

and our humanity.

و انسانیت خود را توسعه داده باشیم.

Through the beauty of his words,

مولانا با زیبایی کلام خود،

Rumi makes us feel all the prism of human emotions.

تمام منشور عواطف انسانی را در ما به وجود می‌آورد.

He makes us taste

او ما را به چشیدن

earthly desires and celestial hopes as all real poetry should do.

امیال زمینی و امیدهای آسمانی می‌چشاند چنانکه همه شعرهای واقعی باید بچشند.

And over and over again, he returns to the centrality of love

و بارها و بارها، به محوریت عشق باز می‌گردد

as every real poet should do.

آن گونه که هر شاعر واقعی باید انجام دهد.

And that is why we need the poets.

و به همین دلیل است که ما به شاعران نیاز داریم.

To remember who we are and where we belong.

به یاد بیاوریم که چه کسی هستیم و به کجا تعلق داریم.

Poetry has the power to transmute reality

شعر این قدرت را دارد که واقعیت را

into something rich and meaningful.

به چیزی غنی و معنادار تبدیل کند.

To me, it was life-saving.

برای من، نجات دهنده بود.

When we look at the world,

وقتی به دنیا نگاه می‌کنیم،

at the inhumanity of humanity sometimes,

گاهی به غیرانسانی بودن انسانیت،

how not to feel in exile, indeed?

واقعا چگونه در تبعید، احساس نکنیم؟

How not to cry on "Love's Labour's Lost?"

چگونه در «عشق از دست رفته» گریه نکنیم؟

How not to be desperate and disoriented?

چگونه نا امید و سرگردان نباشیم؟

Poetry can help us through the darkness of times.

شعر می‌تواند ما را در تاریکی روزگار یاری دهد.

As do all the arts if they are spiritually oriented.

همانطور که همه هنرها اگر روحی گرا باشند.

So reading,

پس خواندن،

rendering,

پرداختن،

writing, reciting poetry is a therapy.

نوشتن، شعر گفتن یک درمان است.

It connects us with what is most essential in life,

ما را با آنچه در زندگی ضروری است پیوند می‌دهد،

and that is why it should be cherished.

و به همین دلیل است که باید آن را گرامی داشت.
