I didn't know then all the ways

Our breakup hit me really hard.

I wouldn't let my broken heart get in the way of what was best for Sekou.

We struggled initially, trying to navigate this new space

I asked myself,

The answer for me was simple.

I could either choose fear,

fear of being alone,

fear of the unknown,

or choose love.

And I chose love.

That means seeing the good in you as a father.

It means seeing the good in you as a father

and not your missteps as a partner.

It means putting Sekou first every time,

even if it means I don't get my way.

I know my parents went back and forth

trying to work things out for my brother and I's sake.

Shaka Senghor: It was 1983.

I was 11 years old.

I remember being in a basement with my father,

Ebony and I met

while I was serving a 19-year prison sentence.

For four years,

we used letters, phone calls and visits

Centered in all of that

I remember when we first brought Sekou home.

It was so exciting, it was amazing,

we worked together, we collaborated,

But inside, I was really afraid.

What I understand now about that moment

is that we were fostering a trust

that's necessary for parents to coexist.

To break the toxic pattern

You know, I have to admit,

we have an unconventional relationship

We're not perfect as parents or people.

and Sekou found a puddle outside,

a puddle of mud, mind you.

Had a brand new fresh outfit on, Levi's from head to toe.

And he found this puddle of mud, and he reached for it.

We continue to rethink what is right and wrong

And I get the death stares from other mamas who look at me

ကလေးဆိုတာ​ လူအများရှေ့မှာ ငြိမ်ပြီး ကောင်းစွာပြုမူရမယ်လို့ ခံယူတဲ့

and who think that children should be quiet and well-behaved in public.

အခြားအမေတွေရဲ့ အကြည်စိမ်းတွေကို ခံခဲ့ရတယ်။

I also get those questions that are really judgments,

ကျွန်မကို စီရင်ချက်နဲ့တူတဲ့ မေးခွန်းတွေလည်း အမေးခဲ့ရပေမဲ့

but I don't pay them any mind.

ကျွန်မ ဂရုမစိုက်ခဲ့ဘူး။

Because at the end of the day,

ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့ အဆုံးမှာတော့

our job is to guide Sekou on this journey of life,

ကျွန်မတို့အလုပ်က သားလေးကို သူ့ဘဝခရီးမှာ လမ်းညွှန်ပေးဖို့ဖြစ်ပြီး

not to control him.

ထိန်းချုပ်ဖို့ မဟုတ်လို့ပါ။

We're here to help him figure out his place in the world,

ဒီမှာ ကျွန်မတို့က လောကကြီးထဲက သူ့နေရာကို ကူညီမှန်းဆပေးဖို့၊

to uncover his greatest gifts,

We are raising a free black boy

and we refuse to put limits on him that the world already has.

SS: Our parenting can be seen as an allegory

for this two-sided coin of possibilities.

On one side,

the reality of raising a black boy in a society

လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းမှာ လူမည်းကလေးတစ်ယောက် ပျိုးထောင်ခြင်းရဲ့ လက်တွေ့ကျမှုပါ။

that says that black boys, black bodies and black lives

ဆိုလိုတာက လူမည်းကောင်လေးတွေ၊ လူမည်းကိုယ်တွေနဲ့ လူမည်း အသက်တွေကို

only seen as profitable or disposable.

လိုသုံးသာသာအဖြစ် မြင်ကြတာပါ။

And then there's the other side.

အခြားတစ်ဘက် ရှိပါသေးတယ်။

Possibility of two parents who are no longer together

အတူမနေကြတော့တဲ့ မိနှစ်ပါးရဲ့ ဖြစ်ခြေနိုင်ပါ။

coexisting, supporting each other,

အတူယှဉ်တွဲရင်၊ အချင်းချင်ပံ့ပိုးရင်း

loving each other, showing affection publicly

တစ်ဦးကို တစ်ဦးချစ်ခင်ရင်း၊ လူသိရှက်ကြား ချစ်ခင်မှုကိုပြသရင်း

in a way that honors the relationship with our son.

ကျွန်တော်တို့သားလေးနဲ့ ဆက်ဆံရေးကို ဂုဏ်ယူတဲ့နည်းနဲ့အတိုင်းပါ။

And even more importantly

ပိုပြီတောင် အရေးကြီးတာက

is the power to support each other in all those vulnerable moments.

ဒီအားငယ်နေတဲ့အချိန်တွေမှာ အချင်းချင်း ဖေးမကူညီဖို့ပါ။

There was this one time

တစ်ချိန်တော့ ရှိခဲ့တယ်။

that it was my day to go pick up Sekou, you remember that time?

ကျွန်တော်က သားလေးကျောင်းကြိုရတဲ့ အလှည့်၊ ဒီအချိန်ကို မှတ်မိလား။

I go pick Sekou up, he's in first grade,

ကျွန်တော် သွားကြိုတယ်၊ သားလေးက ပထမတန်းမှာပါ။

and as I'm walking up,

ကျွန်တော်လမ်းလျှောက်နေစဉ်

another parent walks up and says, "Hey, Shaka.

မိဘတစ်ဦးက လျှောက်လာပြီး ပြောတာက "ဟေး Shaka ၊

I seen Oprah Winfrey give a shout-out to you

မနေ့ညက CNNမှာ ချီးကျူးဂုဏ်ပြုသွားတာကို

on CNN last night."

ငါတွေ့လိုက်တယ်"တဲ့။

She was super excited, exuberant even.

သူက အတော်ကြီး စိတ်လှုပ်ရှားနေပြီး ရွှင်မြူးလို့တောင်နေတယ်။

I was mortified.

ကျွန်တော် အရှက်ရသွားတာပေါ့။

Because I thought, what's going to happen when she tells another parent,

အကြောင်းကတော့ တွေးမိတာက သူက အခြားမိဘတစ်ဦးကိုပြောရင်၊

and they tell another parent,

သူတို့ကအခြားမိဘကို ပြောရင်၊

and then they go and look me up

နောက်တော့ ကျွန်တော့ဆီလာပြီး ကြည့်၊

and then they discover

နောက် ကျွန်တော်က

that I was in prison for second-degree murder.

ဒုတိယအဆင့် လူသတ်သမားဆိုတာ သိသွားပြီး သူတို့ရဲ့ကလေးက

And then their child hears about it.

ဒီအကြောင်း ကြားသွားရင် ဘာဖြစ်မလဲဆိုတာပါ။

And they come to school, and they say to Sekou,

သူတို့ ကျောင်းကို လာပြီး သားလေးကို ပြောကြမယ်။

"Your dad was convicted of murdering someone."

"မင်းရဲ့အဖေက လူတစ်ယောက်ကို သတ်လို့ ထောင်ကျခဲ့တာ။"

And I remember, as watching Sekou race out,

သားလေး ကျွန်တော့ဆီ ပြေးလာတာကို အမှတ်ရမိတယ်။

and I knew that I had to call Ebony.

Ebony ကိုဖုန်းဆက်ရမယ်ဆိုတာ သိလိုက်တယ်။

When I called her, I explained to her what happened,

သူ့ကို ဖုန်းဆက်တဲ့အခါ အကြောင်းစုံ ရှင်းပြလိုက်တယ်။

Ebony said, "You have to have the talk."

So I took Sekou home,

and then me doing affirmations.

And I remember holding him tightly.

သားလေးကို တင်းကျပ်စွာ ဖက်ထားခဲ့တာကို မှတ်မိတယ်။

And I realized the importance of the affirmations that we do at night.

အဲဒီညက ကပြုလုပ်ခဲ့တဲ့ ကတိသစ္စာပြုခြင်းရဲ့ အရေးပါမှုကို သဘောပေါက်ခဲ့တယ်။

And I see them as a road map, as a guide,

ဒါတွေကို မိဘတွေအတွက် သူတို့ကလေးကလေးတွေကို

as a touchstone for other parents to protect

ကာကွယ်ဖို့၊ ခွန်အားပေးဖို့ လမ်းပြမြေပုံတစ်ချပ်၊ လမ်းညွှန်တစ်ခု၊

and to empower their children,

မှတ်ကျောက်တစ်တုံးအဖြစ် ကျွန်တော် မြင်လိုက်တယ်။

especially in a world where it's very difficult.

For us, co-parenting is so much more

than scheduling pick-up and drop-off,

playdates,

ကစားချိန်တွေ၊ ၊ဘာဝတ်မယ်၊ ဘာစားမယ်ဆိုတာ

deciding what he's going to wear, what he's going to eat.

ဆုံးဖြတ်ပေးတာတို့ထက် အများကြီးပိုပါတယ်။

For us, it's about helping each other carry the weight,

ဝန်ထုပ်ကို ဖြေပြီး ဝန်ကို မျှထမ်းဖို့ အချင်းချင်း ကူညီခြင်းပါ။

unpack the load,

မျှထမ်းကာ သားလေးအပေါ်ထားတဲ့

and to show up in the world in a way that honors the beauty

သားလေးရဲ့ လှပမှုကို ဂုဏ်ပြုတဲ့ နည်းလမ်းတစ်နဲ့ လောကထဲမှာ

of our son.

And it's for these reasons that we do affirmations.

ER: We never though we'd be here.

ကျွန်မတို့ ဒီအခြေအနေရောက်မယ် လို့ လုံးဝ မထင်ခဲ့ဘူး။

But here we are.

ဒါပေမဲ့ အခုရောက်ခဲ့ပြီ။

And we hope that the way that we show up for Sekou

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ သားလေးနဲ့ အချင်းချင်းအပေါ် ကျွန်မတို့ ပြသတဲ့ နည်းလမ်းဟာ

and for each other

အောင်မြင်တဲ့ မိဘနှစ်ဦးအတူ

is a model of what successful co-parenting can look like.
