Computers have become truly incredible.

So it is disappointing

hasn't really changed in the last 50 years.

We still use a mouse and keyboards. We're clicking on screens and buttons.

Mobile phones are the same.

We're just using fingers instead of a mouse.

단지 마우스 대신 손가락을 이용할 뿐이죠.

So is that it?

Is that what the future looks like?

We're going to be stuck in the screens

with our faces not seeing the world around us?

주변 세상을 외면하게 될까요?

That's not the future I imagine, or the future I'm attracted to.

그건 제가 상상하거나 매력을 느끼는 미래가 아닙니다.

What I've been always interested in is things,

제가 늘 관심을 가졌던 것은

physical things we use every day, like things on this table

우리가 매일 사용하는 물건들입니다.

이 가족들이 전혀 신경쓰지 않는 탁자 위의 물건들이죠.

that the family doesn't pay attention to.

Things tell our story. They tell who we are.

이것들은 우리에 대해 말하고 우리가 누구인지 말해줍니다.

They tell a lot about us.

우리에 대헤 많은 것들을 이야기해주죠.

Let me give you an example.

예를 들어보죠.

These are photographs of things a person touched during 24 hours.

이 사진은 어느 누군가가 24시간 동안 사용한 물건들입니다.

What can you tell about him?

어떤 사람인지 설명할 수 있나요?

He loves his motorcycle. Right?

그는 오토바이를 좋아합니다. 그렇죠?

The biggest thing in his picture.

사진 중에 가장 큰 물건이니까요.

What can you tell about this girl?

이 소녀에 대해서는 뭐라고 할 수 있을까요?

She spends all her time on the beach.

그녀는 많은 시간을 해변에서 보낼 겁니다.

There's a surfboard.

여기 서핑보드가 있거든요.

She lives by the sea.

그녀는 바다 근처에 삽니다.

What can you tell about this guy?

이 사람에 대해서는 뭐라고 할 수 있을까요?

He's a chef.

그는 요리사입니다.

Look at all the ingredients he touched during the day,

하루 동안 그가 다루었을 이 식재료들을 보세요.

while he was preparing the food,

이것들로 음식을 준비했겠죠.

and the computer is a tiny part of his life,

컴퓨터는 그의 삶에서 아주 작은 부분입니다.

this sad thing in the corner.

이렇게 구석에 외롭게 놓여있네요.

So if we are using things all the time,

이렇게 늘 사용하는 물건이 있고

and this is a big part of our lives,

그것이 우리 삶의 대분을 차지한다면

can things become the way for us to interact with our digital life?

그 물건들이 우리의 디지털 생활과 상호작용할 방법이 있을까요?

Can the world become your interface?

주변 세상이 여러분의 인터페이스가 될 수 있을까요?

That was my idea.

이게 제 아이디어였고

I've been working for 20 years on it.

20년 동안 이것을 연구해왔습니다.

My idea is that in order to interact in digital life,

you don't need to have screens and keyboards and mouses.

You can interact with your digital life

just by using the things you use every day.

And to realize this idea, I need to solve three big challenges.

Let me tell you about them.

그것들에 대해 말씀드리겠습니다.

The first one, obviously: Is it even possible?

첫 번째는, 확실히 그것이 가능하냐는 것입니다.

How can you take an everyday thing you use every day

어떻게 매일 사용하는 일상의 물건을

컴퓨터 인터페이스로 전환시킬 수 있을까요?

and turn it into a computer interface?

Now I was inspired by the book "Hackers."

저는 "해커스"라는 책에서 힌트를 얻었습니다.

I read it when I was a teenager,

제가 10대 때 읽은 책인데요.

and one of the essential ideas of this book

이 책의 본질적인 생각들 중 하나는

is that you can change the purpose of things

사물의 사용 목적을 바꾸고자 할 때는

by inventing new technology and then hacking into things

새로운 기술을 발명하고 사물들을 해킹함으로써

and changing them.

변화시킬 수 있다는 것입니다.

So I've been thinking what kind of technology I can invent

그래서 저는 생각해봤습니다.

어떤 기술을 발명해야

so that I can hack into things you use every day

일상의 물건들을 해킹할 수 있고

and make them interactive.

그것으로 상호작용할 수 있을지를요.

So when I was working on this thing, I invented this sensor

which injects structured electric fields into objects

and turns them into gesture interfaces.

So this doorknob, unmodified, can become a gesture sensor.

It can know how you're touching it. It can feel how you're touching it.

여러분이 문 손잡이를 어떻게 만지는지 알아내고 감지할 수 있죠.

It makes a circle, or can I grasp.

And this doorknob isn't modified.

이 문 손잡이는 개조되지 않았습니다. 특별한 것은 아무것도 없죠.

There's nothing special about doorknobs.

Anything can become interactive.

무엇이든 상호작용할 수 있습니다.

What about plants?

식물은 어떨까요?

So plants are interesting, because with plants,

식물들은 흥미롭습니다.

왜냐하면 식물들은 여러분이 어디를 만지는지 알 수 있기 때문이죠.

they can know where you're touching.

You can see the line moving up and down on the image.

화면에서 선이 오르내리는 게 보이시죠.

And that can turn into a musical interface.

Now, we do have also practical applications:

a calendar plant for those who are obsessed about practicality.

We can give things a personality.

사물에 개성을 부여할 수도 있습니다.

So in this particular example,

the orchid can communicate to you

이 난초는 여러분과 의사소통을 할 수 있습니다.

through images and sounds.

이미지와 소리를 통해서 말이죠.

It doesn't like to be touched, so it's created these electric images

이 식물은 만지는 걸 싫어해서

쉿~ 소리를 의미하는 전기적인 이미지를 만들어 냈습니다.

that are hissing at you.

(작은 음의 변화)

This plant, for example,

예를 들어, 이 식물의 경우는..

is more robust, it's a snake plant,

훨씬 활발한 산세베리아인데요.

and it likes playing with you. It engages you.

노는 걸 좋아하고 관심을 끌려고 합니다.

So every thing can be different,

그래서 어떤 것이든 달라질 수 있고

and every thing can represent what it feels.

어떤 것이든 감정을 표현할 수 있습니다.

So everything can be hacked, all the things, including your body.

따라서 뭐든지 해킹할 수 있습니다. 여러분의 몸도 해킹할 수 있죠.

In this example, we hacked your body

이 경우는 여러분의 몸을 해킹해서 손을 어떻게 구부렸는지 측정할 수 있고

so you can measure how you're folding your hands

and then using your hand gestures to control something else,

so if you don't want to listen to some music thousands of times,

you simply can cover your ears to turn it off.

So everything can be hacked, and research is important,

따라서 뭐든지 해킹할 수 있습니다. 연구가 중요할 뿐이죠.

but the second challenge we have

하지만 두 번째 과제는

is how can we go from R and D, and prototypes, to real products?

연구와 시제품으로부터 어떻게 실제 제품을 만드냐는 것입니다.

How can we make real things that are also interfaces?

실제 물건이면서 인터페이스인 것을 어떻게 만들 수 있을까요?

And you may ask yourself, who would do this?

누가 그런 걸 만들 수 있을지 생각해보겠죠.

Silicon Valley?

실리콘밸리일까요?

Is it through Shenzhen?

중국 심천일까요?

Now the challenge there is that the world of things is huge.

그런데 문제는 사물의 세계가 거대하다는 것입니다.

Every year, the apparel industry produces 150 billion garments.

매년, 의류산업에서 생산되는 의류는 1,500억 벌에 달합니다.

In comparison, the technology industry only makes 1.4 billion phones.

이에 비해 기술 산업에서는 단지 14억 대의 전화기가 생산되죠.

The world of things is much bigger than the world of technology.

사물의 세계는 기술 세계보다 훨씬 규모가 큽니다.

The technology world cannot change the world of things.

기술 세계는 사물의 세계를 변화시킬 수 없습니다.

Instead, we need to create technology which changes makers of things,

대신에 사물을 만드는 사람을 바꾸는 기술을 창조할 필요가 있습니다.

people who make your chairs and clothes and everything else,

의자, 옷 등 사물들을 만들어내는 사람들을

into makers of smart things,

스마트 사물을 만드는 사람으로 바꾸는 거죠.

enable them to do that.

그들이 하도록 만드는 겁니다.

So to test this challenge, we came up with a very simple idea and challenge:

그래서 아주 간단한 아이디어와 과제로 이 문제를 시험해보기로 했습니다.

Can a tailor make a wearable?

재단사가 웨어러블 기기를 만들 수 있을까요?

Now we don't want to take a tailor

그렇다고 재단사가 전기기술자로 바뀌기를 원하는 것은 아닙니다.

and turn the tailor into an electrical engineer.

We still want to have some tailors around.

우리는 여전히 재단사들이 주변에 남아 있기를 바랍니다.

But what we would like to do is create technology

하지만 우리가 창조하려는

which looks, feels and behaves like a raw material used by the tailor

재단사가 옷을 만들 때처럼 보이고, 느껴지고, 움직이는 기술입니다.

to make their clothes.

For example, a touch panel made for a tailor would look like this,

made out of textiles, so you can cut it with scissors and sew it in.

At the same time, it has to retain the performance.

The way to make this textile touch panel

also requires a very different approach than for making consumer electronics.

가전제품을 만드는 것과 굉장히 다른 방법으로의 접근이 필요합니다.

In our case, we have to go to the mountains of Tokyo

우리는 이를 위해 도쿄의 산으로 갔습니다.

to a small factory which was making kimono garments for generations.

대대로 기모노를 만드는 작은 공장을 찾아가야 했죠.

We worked with my collaborators,

우리와 일한 조력자들은 엔지니어들이 아니었습니다.

who were not engineers.

It was an artisan who knows how to make things

기모노를 만들 줄 아는 한 장인과

and an artist who knows how to make things beautiful.

사물을 아름답게 만드는 법을 아는 어느 예술가였습니다.

Working with them, we created one of the best yarns in the world,

그들과 함께 작업하며 세상에서 가장 훌륭한 실을 개발했는데

which consists of thin metallic alloys

얇은 금속 합금으로 구성되어 있고

wrapped around with polyester fibers and cotton fibers.

폴리에스터 섬유와 면직물로 감싸진 것입니다.

These yarns were made in the same machines

이 실들은 대대로 기모노를 만들었던 것과 동일한 기계로 만들어졌습니다.

which were making yarns for kimonos for generations.

We then took these yarns and gave them to the factory,

그러고 나서 우리는 이 실들을 직물을 짜는 공장에 주었고

which is making textiles,

and we wove our smart textile using regular machines

일반 기계를 사용하여 스마트 직물을 만들어 냈습니다.

in a variety of colors and materials,

and we gave those textiles to a tailor

런던의 새빌 로에 있는 한 재단사에게 보내집니다.

in Savile Row in London.

So tailors are traditionalists, particularly in Savile Row.

재단사들은 전통을 고수합니다. 특히 새빌 로에서는 더욱 그렇죠.

They don't use computers.

그들은 컴퓨터를 사용하지 않습니다.

They don't use machines.

기계도 사용하지 않죠.

They use hands and they cut.

그들은 손으로 직접 재단하고

They fit their products on the human body,

3D 아바타가 아닌 사람의 몸에 옷을 맞춥니다.

not on 3-D avatars.

Technology is not a part of their vocabulary,

but they are modern people.

They know how to use technology.

So if technology can be formed and shaped

그래서 만약 기술의 형태를 바꾸어

like a button, like a textile, like something they can use,

단추나 직물, 혹은 그들이 사용하는 재료로 만들면

they absolutely can make a wearable,

틀림없이 그들은 웨어러블 장치를 만들 수 있습니다.

a garment which can place a phone call.

전화를 걸 수 있는 옷 같은 것을요.

So now we've proven that you can actually make a wearable,

not by an electronic company, but by a tailor.

We worked and collaborated with Levi's,

our partners and our neighbors,

to make a real product,

and this product is this jacket I'm wearing right now.

You can buy it. It's on sale.

It was made in the same factories which make all their products,

이 옷은 리바이스 제품을 만드는 동일한 공장에서 제작되었습니다.

and you have noticed

I've been controlling my presentation from the sleeve of the jacket.

저는 지금 재킷의 소매로 발표 화면을 다루고 있습니다.

I go like this, it goes forward. Like this, it goes backward.

이렇게 하면 앞 페이지로 가고 이렇게 하면, 뒤 페이지로 가죠.

And of course, I can do more things.

발표 화면을 제어하는 것 말고도 물론 더 많은 일을 할 수 있습니다.

It's not just to control a presentation.

내비게이션이나 음악도 조절할 수 있죠.

I can now control my navigation, control my music,

but most importantly, it stays a jacket, it stays a thing,

가장 중요한 것은, 재킷 형태를 유지하기에

which makes me look great.

저도 멋을 낼 수 있다는 점이죠.

And that's the most important thing.

So OK, we proved we can turn things into interfaces.

We proved that these things can be made by makers of things

and not by technology companies.

The third challenge:

How can we scale?

How can we go from one product to many products?

어떻게 하면 한 제품에서 여러 제품으로 확장시킬 수 있을까?

And that's what we're working on right now.

이게 바로 지금 저희가 연구하고 있는 것입니다.

Let me tell you how we're going to do this.

저희가 어떻게 연구해 나갈지 말씀드리겠습니다.

First of all, I want to make myself clear --

우선, 저는 제 자신을 분명히 하고 싶습니다.

I am not talking about the Internet of Things.

저는 사물 인터넷을 말씀드리는 게 아닙니다.

I'm not talking about creating another gadget

지겨워져서 서랍 속에 던지고 잊어버릴

you get bored with and throw in the back of your drawer

또 다른 의류를 만드는 것에 대해

and forget about.

말씀드리는 것이 아닙니다.

I am talking about the foundational, important principle which guides my work:

제 연구를 인도하는 기초적이고 중요한 원칙에 대해 말씀드리겠습니다.

"Technology has to make existing things better."

"기술은 기존의 것들을 개선해야 한다"

It makes them better by connecting them to your digital life

디지털 라이프에 연결함으로써

and adds new usefulness and new functionality

새로운 유용성과 기능을 더하면서도

while remaining the same original purpose,

원래 목적을 바꾸지 않고 유지시키는 것입니다.

not changing it.

This jacket I am wearing can control my mobile phone and presentation,

제가 입고 있는 이 재킷은 휴대폰과 프레젠테이션을 조정할 수 있지만

but it still remains a jacket.

여전히 재킷입니다.

That means that once we start making all things interactive and connected,

그 말은, 우리가 사물을 상호작용 시키고 연결하기 시작하면

every thing would have its own set of actuators, displays and sensors

specific for those things.

A pair of running shoes does not need to have a touch sensor.

Why would it have one?

If you have a sensor,

it should measure your running performance

while remaining a great pair of shoes.

Makers of things will have to start thinking

what kind of digital functionality they have to offer to their consumers.

They will have to become service providers,

or they may become irrelevant.

We will have to provide and create a service ecosystem

just like we've done for mobile phones,

where you have apps and services and everything else,

and sometimes, you're still making a phone call.

Now to make this ecosystem possible, we have to avoid fragmentation.

We have to avoid different interfaces for different people for different things.

We have to create uniform user experience

and, for that reason, we have to create a single computing platform

which powers all those things.

What is the platform going to be?

And I think the answer is obvious:

it's a cloud, cloud computing.

Now you cannot connect things directly to the cloud, obviously.

So you have to develop a small device which can be plugged into all the things

and make them connected to the cloud

to unlock their potential and add new functionality.

So let me show, for the first time, the real device which we've built.

We are showing this for the first time.

That's what it looks like,

and it's a small device

which will be connected to things we want to make smart

and connected and interactive.

How is it going to work?

So on the back, you have a few electrodes.

So when you plug them into different things,

the device will recognize where you're plugging them

We would like to give this device to makers of things,

We don't want to dictate the use cases.

We don't need keyboards and screens and mouses to interact with your computer.

So I've been working on this idea for 20 years,

and now it's taking shape,

and as it's taking shape, what we are realizing

is that I always thought I was working on computer interfaces,
