The longest journey that I have ever taken.

제게 있어서 가장 길었던 여행 경험은

That was in 2002.

2002년에 했던 여행입니다.

I was only 19 years old.

그 당시 저는 겨우 19살이었죠.

It was the first time I had ever been on an airplane

그때 처음으로 비행기를 타보았고

and the first time that I had left my country,

제 고향인 르완다를 떠난 것도 처음이었습니다.

Rwanda.

I had to move thousands of kilometers away

꿈을 이루기 위해 수천 km를 가야 했죠.

to follow a dream.

A dream I have had ever since I was a child.

제가 어릴 적부터 간직했던 꿈이었습니다.

And that dream was to become an architect.

바로 건축가가 되겠다는 꿈이었죠.

That was impossible at the time in my country.

당시 제 고향에서는 이룰 수 없는 꿈이었습니다.

There were no schools of architecture.

건축을 가르치는 학교가 없었거든요.

So when I got a scholarship to study in China,

그래서 중국의 한 대학에서 장학금을 받고 공부할 기회를 생겼을 때

I left my life and my family behind

저는 제 삶과 가족을 뒤로하고

and I moved to Shanghai.

중국 상하이로 떠났습니다.

It was an amazing time.

정말 놀라운 시기였죠.

This country was going through a major building boom.

당시 중국은 건설이 한창 호황을 누리던 시기였고

Shanghai, my new home,

저의 새로운 집이 된 상하이도

was quickly turning into a skyscraper city.

고층 건물의 도시로 빠르게 변화하고 있었습니다.

China was changing.

중국 전체가 바뀌고 있었죠.

World-class projects were built to convey a new image of development.

세계적 규모의 건설 사업으로 성장의 새로운 모습이 드러나고 있었습니다.

Modern, striking engineering marvels were going up literally everywhere.

현대적이고 놀라운 기술적 경이로움이 말 그대로 사방에서 펼쳐지고 있었죠.

But behind these facades,

그러나, 그 발전의 이면에는

exploitation of huge numbers of migrant workers,

수많은 이민 노동자들에 대한 착취와

massive displacement of thousands of people

수천 명 주민의 대규모 강제 이주가 있었기에

made these projects possible.

이런 건설 사업을 할 수 있었습니다.

And this fast-paced development

그리고 이런 급속 성장은

also contributed significantly to the pollution

인구 증가의 주요 원인이 되었고 오늘날 중국의 골칫거리가 되었습니다.

that is haunting China today.

Fast-forward to 2010,

그 후, 2010년에

when I went back home to Rwanda.

저는 고향 르완다로 돌아왔습니다.

There, I found development patterns similar to what I saw in China.

그때 저는 중국에서 보았던 성장의 양상과 유사한 모습을 보았습니다.

The country was and still is experiencing its own population and economic growth.

그때부터 지금까지 르완다는 인구 증가와 경제 성장을 계속하고 있습니다.

The pressure to build cities, infrastructure and buildings

도시, 기반시설, 고층건물을 짓고자 하는 압박감이

is at its peak,

정점에 달해 있습니다.

and as a result,

그 결과로

there is a massive building boom as well.

엄청난 건설 호황을 누리고 있죠.

This is the reality across the entire continent of Africa,

이것이 아프리카 대륙 전체를 휩쓸고 있는 현실입니다.

and here's why.

그 이유를 말씀드리겠습니다.

By 2050, Africa's population will double,

2050년이 되면 아프리카 인구는 지금의 두 배로 늘어나

reaching 2.5 billion people.

25억 명에 달할 것입니다.

At this point,

the African population will be slightly less than the current population

아프리카 인구는 지금의 중국과 인도 인구를 합한 것보다

of China and India combined.

The infrastructure and buildings needed to accommodate this many people

is unprecedented in the history of humankind.

We have estimated that by 2050,

we have to build 700,000,000 more housing units,

more than 300,000 schools

30만 개 이상의 학교와

and nearly 100,000 health centers.

약 10만 개의 의료기관이 필요합니다.

Let me put that into perspective for you.

이것이 어느 정도 규모인지 말씀드리죠.

Every day for the next 35 years,

앞으로 35년 동안 매일

we have to build seven health centers,

7개의 의료기관을 지어야 하고

25 schools

25개의 학교와

and nearly 60,000 housing units each day,

약 6만 호의 주택을 하루 만에 지어야 합니다.

every day.

매일 말이죠.

How are we going to build all of this?

이걸 전부 어떻게 짓죠?

Are we going to follow a model of unsustainable building and construction

지속가능성이 없는 건설 사업 모델을 따라야 하는 걸까요?

similar to what I witnessed in China?

제가 중국에서 보았던 그런 형태로요?

Or can we develop a uniquely African model

아니면, 아프리카만을 위한 건설 사업 모델을 개발해서

of sustainable and equitable development?

지속가능하고 균형있는 성장을 할 수는 없을까요?

I'm optimistic we can.

저는 할 수 있다고 낙관하고 있습니다.

I know Africans who are already doing it.

아프리카에서 그 일을 이미 진행하고 있는 사람들도 있고요.

Take Nigerian architect Kunlé Adeyemi for instance,

예를 들어, 나이지리아 건축가인 쿠니에 아데예미 같은 사람이 있죠.

and his work in slums of coastal megacities.

그는 해안 대도시의 빈민가를 대상으로 작업하고 있습니다.

Places like Makoko in Lagos,

라고스의 마코코 같은 지역이죠.

where hundreds of thousands of people live in makeshift structures on stilts

그곳에서는 수십만 명이 수상 임시 가옥에서 살고 있고

on water,

without government infrastructure or services.

공공 시설이나 편의시설이 전혀 없습니다.

A community at great risk of rising sea levels and climate change.

해수면 상승과 기후 변화로 심각한 위험에 처한 곳입니다.

And yet, people who live here are examples of great ingenuity

and the will to survive.

Kunlé and his team have designed a prototype school

that is resilient to rising sea levels.

This is Makoko School.

It's a floating prototype structure that can be adapted to clinics,

to housing, to markets

and other vital infrastructure this community needs.

It's an ingenious solution

that can ensure this community lives safely on the waters of Lagos.

This is Francis Kéré.

He works in the country where he comes from,

Burkina Faso.

Kéré and his team have designed projects that use traditional building techniques.

Children bring stones for the foundation,

and everybody works together to pound the clay floors.

Working with the community,

Kéré and his team have created projects that function better,

with adequate lighting and adequate ventilation.

They're appropriate for this particular context

and really, really beautiful as well.

For the past seven years,

I have been working as an architect at MASS Design Group.

It's a design firm that began in Rwanda.

We have worked in several countries in Africa,

focusing on this more equitable and sustainable model

of architectural practice,

and Malawi is one of those countries.

It's a country with beautiful, remote landscapes

아름답고 외딴 풍경의 이 나라는

with high-peak mountains and fertile valleys.

높은 산과 비옥한 계곡들로 가득합니다.

But it also has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the world.

반면에 임산부 사망률이 세계에서 가장 높은 나라이기도 하죠.

A pregnant woman in Malawi either gives birth at home,

말라위의 산모들은 집에서 아이를 낳거나

or she has to walk a really long journey to the nearest clinic.

아니면 가장 가까운 병원을 찾아서 매우 먼 거리를 걸어가야 합니다.

And one out of 36 of these mothers dies during childbirth.

그래서 산모 36명 중 한 명은 아이를 낳던 중에 사망합니다.

In Malawi,

말라위에서

with our team at MASS Design Group,

MASS 디자인 그룹의 저희 팀은 카순구 산모 대기촌을 설계했습니다.

we designed the Kasungu Maternity Waiting Village.

This is a place women come to six weeks before their due dates.

산모가 출산 전 6주 동안 머무를 수 있는 시설이죠.

Here they receive prenatal care

이곳에 머무르며, 산전 관리를 받고

and train in nutrition and family planning.

영양과 가족 계획에 관한 교육도 받습니다.

At the same time, they form a community

그러면서 그들은 단체를 만들어

with other expectant mothers and their families.

다른 임산부, 그리고 그 가족들과 서로 교류하기도 합니다.

The design of the of Kasungu Maternity Waiting Village

카순구 산모 대기촌의 설계 작업은

borrows from the vernacular typologies of Malawi villages

전통적인 말라위 마을 형태에 착안했고

and is built using really simple materials and techniques.

매우 단순한 재료와 건축 기술로 세워졌습니다.

The earth blocks that we used were made from the same soil of this site.

흙벽돌도 그 지역에 있는 흙으로 만들어졌죠.

This reduces the carbon footprint of this building,

그 덕분에 건축 중에 발생하는 탄소배출을 줄일 수 있었습니다.

but first and foremost,

가장 중요한 점은

it provides a safe and dignified space for these expectant mothers.

이 시설은 임산부들에게 안전하고 편안한 공간을 제공합니다.

These examples show that architecture and design

이런 사례들이 시사하는 바는

건축과 디자인이 복잡한 사회 문제를 다루는 능력과 조직을 가진다는 점입니다.

have the power and the agency to address complex problems.

But more to point,

더 중요한 것은

that we can develop a model of effective solutions

우리 지역 사회를 위한 효과적인 해결책을

for our communities.

스스로 만들 수 있다는 점이죠.

But these three examples are not enough.

하지만 말씀드린 세 가지 사례만으로는 부족합니다.

300 more examples will not be enough.

300개 이상의 사례도 부족하죠.

We need a whole community of African architects and designers

아프리카의 건축가와 디자이너들 모두가

to lead with thousands more examples.

이런 사례 수천 개를 더 만들어야 합니다.

In May of this year,

올해 5월에

we convened a symposium on African architecture, in Kigali,

저희는 키갈리에서 아프리카 건축 학술대회를 열었습니다.

and we invited many of the leading African designers

아프리카의 주도적인 건축 디자이너들과

and architectural educators working across the continent.

아프리카 전역의 건축학자들을 초청했죠.

We all had one thing in common.

모두가 한가지 공통점이 있었습니다.

Every single one of us went to school abroad

참가자 전원이 아프리카가 아닌

and outside of Africa.

다른 나라에서 공부를 했다는 것입니다.

This has to change.

이것은 바뀌어야 합니다.

If we are to develop solutions unique to us,

만약 우리만을 위한 해법을 찾아야 한다면

rather than attempting to turn Kigali into Beijing,

키갈리를 베이징처럼 바꾸려 할 것이 아니라

or Lagos into Shenzhen,

라고스를 심천처럼 바꿀 것이 아니라

we need a community

우리 지역 사회가

that will build the design confidence of the next generation

우리 다음 세대의 아프리카 건축가와 디자이너들에게

of African architects and designers.

In September last year,

we launched the African Design Centre

저희는 아프리카 디자인 센터를 설립하고

to start building this community.

We admitted 11 fellows from across the continent.

It's a 20-month-long, design-build fellowship program.

Here, they are learning to tackle big challenges

such as urbanism and climate change,

The crowning moment of the fellowship

is a real project that they designed and built.

This is Ruhehe Primary School,

the project they designed.

They immersed themselves in the community to understand the challenges

but also uncover opportunities,

like using a wall made of local volcanic stone

They evaluated the environmental conditions

The construction at Ruhehe Primary School will begin this year.

the African Design Centre fellows are going to work hand-in-hand

When we asked the fellows

what they want to do after their African Design Centre fellowship,

Tshepo from South Africa said

he wants to introduce this new way of building into his country,

Zani wants to expand opportunities for women to become engineers.

Before joining the African Design Centre,

she helped start, in Nairobi,

an organization to bridge the gender gaps for women in engineering fields,

and she hopes to take this movement across Africa,

eventually the whole world.

Moses, from South Sudan,

the world's newest country,

wants to open the first polytechnic school

that will teach people how to build using local materials from his country.

Moses had to be determined to become an architect.

모세스는 이전부터 건축가가 되기로 마음먹었습니다.

The civil war in his country frequently interrupted his architectural education.

하지만, 빈번한 내전 때문에 건축을 공부할 기회가 없었죠.

At the time he was applying to join the African Design Centre,

그가 디자인 센터 입학을 지원할 때

we could hear gunshots going off in the background of his interview call.

전화 인터뷰 중에도 총성이 들려오기도 했습니다.

But even in the middle of this civil war,

하지만, 내전이 진행되고 있는 중에도

Moses hangs on to this idea

모세스가 놓지 않았던 신념은

that architecture can be a way to bridge communities back together.

건축이야말로 지역사회가 다시 화합하는 길이라는 것이었습니다.

You have to be inspired by this fellow's belief

여러분도 이들 연구생들의 신념에 공감하실 것입니다.

that great architecture can make a difference

위대한 건축이 아프리카의 미래 모습에 변화를 가져오리라는 신념말이죠.

on how the future of Africa is built.

The unprecedented growth of Africa cannot be ignored.

아프리카의 전례 없는 성장에 주목해야 합니다.

Imagine Africa's future cities,

아프리카 도시들의 미래를 상상해보세요.

but not as vast slums,

광대한 빈민가의 모습이 아니라

but the most resilient

가장 회복력있고

and the most socially inclusive places on earth.

사회 통합이 가장 잘 되는 장소가 될 것입니다.

This is achievable.

그렇게 할 수 있습니다.

And we have the talent to make it a reality.

우리에겐 그걸 실현할 수 있는 재능도 있고요.

But the journey to ready that talent for the task ahead,

하지만 그 재능을 준비하기 위한 여정이 남아있습니다.

like my own journey,

제가 떠났던 여행처럼 아주 먼 길이 될 것입니다.

is far too long.

For the next generation of African creative leaders,

아프리카의 창의적인 차세대 지도자들을 위해

we have to shorten and streamline that journey.

그것을 짧고 효과적인 여정으로 바꾸어야 합니다.

But most importantly --

하지만 가장 중요하고

and I cannot stress this enough --

몇 번이고 강조하고 싶은 것은

we have to build their design confidence

그들에게 건축 디자인에 관한 자신감을 심어주고

and empower them to develop solutions that are truly African

아프리카뿐만 아니라 전 세계에 영감을 주는 해결책을 찾도록

but globally inspiring.

힘을 실어주는 것입니다.
