This is a representation of your brain,

and your brain can be broken into two parts.

There's the left half, which is the logical side,

And so if we had a scale to measure the aptitude of each hemisphere,

And for example, this would be somebody who's completely logical.

This would be someone who's entirely intuitive.

So where would you put your brain on this scale?

당신의 뇌는 이 눈금의 어디쯤에 해당할까요?

Some of us may have opted for one of these extremes,

몇몇은 두가지 끝 중 한쪽에 있으려는 사람도 있겠지요

but I think for most people in the audience,

your brain is something like this --

아마 이것과 비슷할 겁니다

with a high aptitude in both hemispheres at the same time.

It's not like they're mutually exclusive or anything.

양쪽이 상호 배타적이거나 그런 게 아니라

You can be logical and intuitive.

논리적이면서도 직관적일 수도 있는 것입니다

And so I consider myself one of these people,

그래서 저도 이런 부류 중 한 명이라고 생각합니다

along with most of the other experimental quantum physicists,

실험 양자 물리학자 대부분이 그렇듯이요

who need a good deal of logic

복잡한 생각들을 잘 엮기 위해서

to string together these complex ideas.

논리적인 부분이 많이 필요하면서도

But at the same time, we need a good deal of intuition

그 동시에, 직관도 많이 필요로 하죠

to actually make the experiments work.

실제 실험도 잘 해내려면요

How do we develop this intuition? Well we like to play with stuff.

이런 직관은 어떻게 생길까요? 음, 우선 이것저것 가지고 놀지요

So we go out and play with it, and then we see how it acts,

밖에 나가서 가지고 놀면서 그게 어떻게 작용하는지 보고

and then we develop our intuition from there.

거기에서부터 직관이 생겨나는 거죠

And really you do the same thing.

그리고 여러분도 사실 그렇게 합니다

So some intuition

한가지

that you may have developed over the years

여러분이 익혀 오신 직관 중 하나는

is that one thing is only in one place at a time.

한 물체는 어떤 시점에 오직 한 곳에만 존재한다는 것입니다

I mean, it can sound weird to think about

다시 말해 한 물체가 동시에 다른 두 곳에

one thing being in two different places at the same time,

존재할 수도 있다는 말은 굉장히 이상하게 들린다는 겁니다

but you weren't born with this notion, you developed it.

하지만 이런 직관은 태어날 때부터 있는 것이 아닙니다. 살면서 가지게 되는 거죠.

And I remember watching a kid playing on a car stop.

어떤 애가 주차지지대 위에서 노는 걸 본적이 있는데요

He was just a toddler and he wasn't very good at it, and he kept falling over.

두살 정도 꼬마였어요 그래서 잘 못하고 계속 넘어졌죠

But I bet playing with this car stop taught him a really valuable lesson,

그런데 아마 거기서 놀면서 아주 중요한 것을 배웠을 겁니다

and that's that large things don't let you get right past them,

큰 물체를 통과해서 지나갈 수는 없고

and that they stay in one place.

큰 물체는 한 곳에 가만히 있다는 것을요

And so this is a great conceptual model to have of the world,

그래서 이런 게 세상을 이해하는 중대한 관념적 모델입니다

unless you're a particle physicist.

여러분이 입자물리학자가 아닌 이상 말입니다

It'd be a terrible model for a particle physicist,

그런 모델은 사실 입자물리학자가 이용하기엔 어렵습니다

because they don't play with car stops,

왜냐면 입자물리학자는 주차지지대 같은 것 말고

they play with these little weird particles.

이상한 성질을 가진 작은 입자들을 가지고 놀거든요

And when they play with their particles,

그런 입자들을 가지고 놀다 보면

they find they do all sorts of really weird things --

정말 희한한 일들을 많이 관찰합니다

like they can fly right through walls,

입자들이 벽을 뚫고 가기도 하고

or they can be in two different places at the same time.

다른 두 곳에서 동시에 발견되기도 하죠

And so they wrote down all these observations,

그래서 이런 관찰 결과들을 모두 기록하고는

and they called it the theory of quantum mechanics.

그것들 두고 양자역학 이론이라고 했습니다

And so that's where physics was at a few years ago;

그게 몇년전의 물리학의 위치였습니다

you needed quantum mechanics

아주 작은 입자들을 설명하려면

to describe little, tiny particles.

양자역학이 필요했죠

But you didn't need it

그런데 우리 주변의

to describe the large, everyday objects around us.

큰 물체들을 설명하려면 양자역학이 필요 없었어요

This didn't really sit well with my intuition,

이런 게 제 직관과는 너무 맞지 않았습니다

and maybe it's just because I don't play with particles very often.

제가 입자들에 대한 경험이 부족해서일 수도 있겠죠

Well, I play with them sometimes,

음, 저도 입자들을 가지고 놀긴 합니다만

but not very often.

자주는 아니예요

And I've never seen them.

그리고 실제로 본적도 없어요

I mean, nobody's ever seen a particle.

사실 아무도 실제로 본 사람은 없죠

But it didn't sit well with my logical side either.

그런데 직관 뿐 아니라 제 논리와도 맞지 않았어요

Because if everything is made up of little particles

왜냐면 모든게 작은 입자로 구성되어 있고

and all the little particles

그리고 그 입자들이

follow quantum mechanics,

양자역학을 따른다면

then shouldn't everything just follow quantum mechanics?

모든 물체들도 양자역학을 따라야 하지 않을까요?

I don't see any reason why it shouldn't.

저는 그러지 않을 이유가 없다고 봅니다

And so I'd feel a lot better about the whole thing

그리고 만약 일상의 물체들도 역시

if we could somehow show

양자역학을 따른다는 것을

that an everyday object

증명하는 방법이 있다면

also follows quantum mechanics.

그 모든 것이 훨씬 잘 들어 맞을 것입니다

So a few years ago, I set off to do just that.

So I made one.

This is the first object

that you can see

that has been in a mechanical quantum superposition.

So what we're looking at here

is a tiny computer chip.

And you can sort of see this green dot right in the middle.

And that's this piece of metal I'm going to be talking about in a minute.

This is a photograph of the object.

And here I'll zoom in a little bit. We're looking right there in the center.

And then here's a really, really big close-up of the little piece of metal.

So what we're looking at is a little chunk of metal,

and it's shaped like a diving board, and it's sticking out over a ledge.

And so I made this thing

in nearly the same way as you make a computer chip.

I went into a clean room with a fresh silicon wafer,

and then I just cranked away at all the big machines for about 100 hours.

For the last stuff, I had to build my own machine --

to make this swimming pool-shaped hole

underneath the device.

This device has the ability

to be in a quantum superposition,

but it needs a little help to do it.

Here, let me give you an analogy.

자, 비유를 하나 해드릴게요

You know how uncomfortable it is to be in a crowded elevator?

꽉찬 엘리베이터 안에 있으면 얼마나 답답한지 아시죠?

I mean, when I'm in an elevator all alone, I do all sorts of weird things,

그러니까, 저는 엘리베이터에 혼자 있으면 온갖 이상한 짓을 다 하는데

but then other people get on board

그러다가 다른 사람이 타면

and I stop doing those things

하던 걸 멈추죠

because I don't want to bother them,

그 사람들을 방해하고 싶지 않거든요

or, frankly, scare them.

솔직히는, 겁 먹으실 까 봐서 이기도 하구요

So quantum mechanics says

양자 역학에 따르면

that inanimate objects feel the same way.

생명이 없는 물체도 꼭 그렇게 느낀다는 겁니다

The fellow passengers for inanimate objects

그런 물체에겐 엘리베이터에서의 동승객이

are not just people,

사람 뿐 만은 아니구요

but it's also the light shining on it

비춰지는 불빛도 있고

and the wind blowing past it and the heat of the room.

바람도 있고 그 안의 열기도 있지요

And so we knew, if we wanted to see

그래서 이 금속조각의 양자역학 상태를

this piece of metal behave quantum mechanically,

보기 위해서는 다른 승객을 모두 쫓아 내야 한다는 걸

we're going to have to kick out all the other passengers.

저희는 알고 있었습니다

And so that's what we did.

그래서 그렇게 했지요

We turned off the lights,

불도 껐고

and then we put it in a vacuum and sucked out all the air,

진공 상태에 넣어서 모든 공기도 없앴고

and then we cooled it down

온도도 절대온도 0도에

to just a fraction of a degree above absolute zero.

영점몇도까지 가까이 낮추었습니다

Now, all alone in the elevator,

이제 그 엘리베이터 안에 혼자 있으니

the little chunk of metal is free to act however it wanted.

그 작은 금속조각이 하고 싶은대로 할 수 있죠

And so we measured its motion.

저희는 그 움직임을 측정했는데

We found it was moving in really weird ways.

정말 기이하게 움직이는 걸 관찰했습니다

Instead of just sitting perfectly still, it was vibrating,

가만히 있지 않고 진동했는데

and the way it was vibrating was breathing something like this --

진동은 꼭 숨쉬는 것처럼 했어요

like expanding and contracting bellows.

이렇게 팽창했다 수축했다 하면서요

And by giving it a gentle nudge,

그리고 그걸 살짝 건드려줌으로써

we were able to make it both vibrate

진동하는 상태와 멈추어 있는 상태가

and not vibrate

동시에 존재하도록

at the same time --

할 수 있었습니다

something that's only allowed with quantum mechanics.

그건 양자 역학에서만 허용되는 상태입니다

So what I'm telling you here is something truly fantastic.

그래서 저는 정말 멋진 걸 말씀드릴려고 하는데요

What does it mean for one thing

어떤 물체가 동시에

to be both vibrating and not vibrating

진동하기도 하고 멈추어 있기도 한다는 건

at the same time?

무얼 뜻할까요?

So let's think about the atoms.

자, 우선 원자들을 생각해 보죠

So in one case:

한 상태에서는

all the trillions of atoms that make up that chunk of metal

저 금속 조각을 구성하는 엄청나게 많은 원자들이

are sitting still

가만히 있습니다

and at the same time those same atoms

그리고 그 동시에 그 똑같은 원자들이

are moving up and down.

위 아래로 움직이기도 합니다

Now it's only at precise times when they align.

시간이 딱 들어 맞을 때에만 동시에 정렬을 하고

The rest of the time they're delocalized.

그 외 대부분은 모두 따로 움직입니다

That means that every atom

그말은, 모든 원자가

is in two different places at the same time,

다른 두 곳에 동시에 존재한다는 것이고

which in turn means the entire chunk of metal

다시 말해 그 전체 금속 조각이

is in two different places.

다른 두 곳에 존재한다는 것이죠

I think this is really cool.

전 이게 정말 멋지다고 보는데요

It was worth locking myself in a clean room to do this for all those years

몇년 동안 클린룸에 쳐박혀 있은 보람이 있었지요

because, check this out,

the difference in scale

원자 하나와

between a single atom and that chunk of metal

저 금속 조각의 크기 비율이

is about the same as the difference

그 금속 조각 크기와 여러분 크기와의

between that chunk of metal and you.

비율과 거의 일치합니다

So if a single atom can be in two different places at the same time,

따라서, 한 원자가 다른 두 곳에 동시에 있을 수 있으면

that chunk of metal can be in two different places,

저 금속 조각도 다른 두 곳에 있을 수 있는데

then why not you?

그러면 여러분은 왜 안되겠어요?

I mean, this is just my logical side talking.

제말은, 단순히 논리적으로만 생각해봐도 말이죠

So imagine if you're in multiple places at the same time,

여러분이 여러 곳에 동시에 있다고 생각해 보세요

what would that be like?

그건 느낌이 어떨까요?

How would your consciousness

여러분의 신체가 공간 상에 흩어져 있는 것을

handle your body being delocalized in space?

여러분의 의식은 어떻게 받아들일까요?

There's one more part to the story.

한가지 덧붙일 것이 있습니다

It's when we warmed it up,

저희가 다시 온도를 높이고

and we turned on the lights and looked inside the box,

빛을 쪼이고 그 상자 안을 보았을 때

we saw that the piece metal was still there in one piece.

그 금속 조각이 여전히 하나의 물체로 가만히 있는 것을 보았습니다

And so I had to develop this new intuition,

that it seems like all the objects in the elevator

are really just quantum objects

just crammed into a tiny space.

You hear a lot of talk

about how quantum mechanics says that everything is all interconnected.

Well, that's not quite right.

It's more than that; it's deeper.

It's that those connections,

your connections to all the things around you,

여러분과 여러분 주위 모든 것들과의 연결 고리들이

literally define who you are,

여러분을 말그대로 '정의'해 주는 것입니다

and that's the profound weirdness of quantum mechanics.

바로 그것이 양자역학이 갖는, 심오하면서도 기묘한 특성입니다
