"Listen.

Do you hear that?"

들리니?"

my grandmother asked me.

Listen to what the beetle is saying."

I would spend hours and hours listening to the little beetle

딱정벌레가 커다란 똥을 굴리는 소리를

rolling a huge ball of dung,

몇 시간 동안이나 듣곤 했었죠.

and while at it,

그 소리는

I heard a variety of environmental sounds.

저에게 많은 자연의 소리를 들려 주었어요.

With the keenest of ears, I would hear family chatter,

저의 간절한 귀를 통해 가족의 소리

laughter,

웃음의 소리

the wind howling

바람의 소리

and even crickets chirping.

그리고 귀뚜라미 소리까지 듣곤 했었죠.

All these sounds crisscrossed into each other,

이 모든 소리에는 서로 상호작용이 있었고

and I would hear rhythm in between.

저는 그 사이의 리듬을 들을 수가 있었어요.

Then I would beat my plate with a spoon and my chest with my tiny hands

그 리듬을 표현하려고 그릇을 수저로 치고

trying to recreate what I was hearing.

가슴을 저의 작은 손으로 치곤 했습니다.

I have been beating the same plates,

그리고 프로 드럼 연주자와 타악기 연주자가 되기 위해

shakers, drums, pans and so much more ever since

to become a professional drummer

and percussionist.

As I grew up, subconsciously,

하지만 자라면서

I felt a strong urge to hide my newfound hobby.

저는 이 새로운 취미를 숨겨야 된다고 생각했어요.

Even without it being said out loud,

누가 그렇게 말하지 않았는데도

I knew that somehow it was wrong to do what I was doing.

저의 취미가 잘못된 것임을 무의식적으로 알았어요.

In most of the ceremonies,

대부분의 의식 행사에 가보면

I noticed that most of the women and girls were not in sight,

여자나 소녀는 찾아보기가 힘들어요.

but when they were,

여자나 소녀를 볼 수 있을 때라곤

I noticed that they would wear their dancing skirts

그녀들이 댄스 치마를 입고 허리춤을 추거나

and shake their waists off,

노래를 부르거나 박수를 치거나

singing, clapping, ululating,

요들송을 부를 때 밖에 없죠.

while the men filled up the rhythm section.

오직 남자들 만이 리듬을 만들어내고 있었죠.

A few years later, I came to understand

몇 년이 지나 저는

what tradition and culture meant,

전통이 무엇이고 문화가 무엇인지

and what was considered taboo

그리고 금기 사항이 무엇인지

or otherwise.

이해할 수 있었죠.

In the majority of African cultures,

오랫동안 대부분의 아프리카 문화에서는

women have been forbidden to play drums and percussion

여자가 드럼이나 타악기를 치는 것이

for a very long time.

금기시 되어 왔습니다.

I believe this taboo stems from the psychological and traditional belief

제 생각에는 이런 금기 사항이 여자는 더 하천한 존재라고 생각하는

that the woman is an inferior being.

어떤 심리적, 관습적 믿음에서 오는 것 같아요.

I grew up hearing that the place of the woman is in the kitchen

저는 여자의 설자리는 부엌이나 다른 방에 있다고

or in the other room.

들으면서 자랐어요.

Mhm?

Women had been brainwashed and led on for so long

여성들은 너무 오랫동안 이러한 관습적 생각에 세뇌되어

until we had fallen victim and actually started believing in this ourselves.

우리도 모르게 이것들을 믿게 되버린 거죠.

This, coupled with the lack of interest to educate women,

거기다 여성의 교육에 관한 무관심까지 합세해

played a major, major role

어느덧 우리의 마음속 깊이

in etching this into our minds.

자리잡게 된 것입니다.

The sounds of the drum provoke emotion and movement.

드럼 소리는 감정과 행동을 유발시킵니다.

Essentially, the drum is a very sensual instrument.

근본적으로 드럼은 아주 관능적인 악기이죠.

Once at a festival, a man asked me

한번은 페스티벌에서 한 남자가 저에게 묻더군요.

how I dared put a drum in between my legs.

어떻게 감히 드럼을 다리 사이에 그렇게 끼고 있느냐.

I have been considered loose and dirty for playing an instrument.

저를 더럽고 쉬운 여자로 생각하더군요.

I have repeatedly been questioned

몇 번이고 사람들이 물었습니다.

why I would choose to play drums

왜 드럼을 치게 됐냐고요.

instead of practicing journalism,

대학에서 공부한

which I studied for my undergraduate,

저널리즘 커리어를 선택하지 않고요.

which has been termed "more decent."

좀더 "품위 있는" 직업 이라면서요.

The sight of a woman playing drums enfeebles her,

드럼을 치는 여자의 모습은 그녀를 약하게 만들고

makes her less feminine,

여성스럽지 못하고

less desirable,

매력적이지 못하다고들 그럽니다.

but all this optimally puts her on a lower social stand.

결국은 사회에서 인정받지 못한다고 하지요.

Drumming has essentially represented the strong African heritage,

드럼은 아프리카 문화의 위대한 유산이며

and its importance can be seen

이의 중요성은 다수의 아프리카 전통에서

in the many aspects of the African tradition.

찾아 볼 수 있습니다.

Many communities encompass drumming in their day-to-day activities,

사회의 많은 일상에서 지금까지도 드럼은

and still do up to date,

큰 부분을 차지합니다.

from childbirths to initiation ceremonies,

출산, 입문 의식

welcoming ceremonies,

환영 의식

marriages and even burials.

결혼과 심지어 장례식 에서도요.

However, this same drum

하지만 또 한편으로는

is disappearing very fast from the music scene,

이 드럼이 음악의 세계에서 빠르게 사라져가고 있으며

and the traditional genre is losing its popularity

전통 장르는 사람들 사이에서

very quickly amongst the people.

빠르게 인기를 잃어가고 있습니다.

Inspired by the need to preserve this culture,

저는 이 문화를 지켜야할 필요성을 느꼈습니다.

I am teaching the significance and the importance of the drum

그래서 젊은 소년, 소녀와 여성들에게

to young boys, women and girls.

드럼의 중대성에 대해 가르치고 있으며

In my journey as a percussion teacher,

타악기 선생님으로써 일하면서

I have realized that very many women

많은 여성들이 드럼을 치기를 원한다는 것을

actually want to play the drum,

알게 되었어요.

but at the same time,

하지만 동시에

they fear it.

그들은 두려워합니다.

Some fear how society will perceive them.

그들은 사회의 시각을 두려워하고

Others fear the physical pain that comes with playing.

드럼을 치는데서 오는 육체적 고통을 두려워 하죠.

Oh yes, it's not that easy.

그럼요. 쉽지 않지요.

Some, because their spouses don't approve of them,

누군가는 그들의 남편이 허락해 주지 않아서

and others generally fear the responsibility

of being a bearer of culture.

부담스러워합니다.

I believe, or I think that all these fears

이러한 두려움들은

are etched in the collective feminine cautiousness

여성으로서 조숙해야 한다는 집단적인 생각에서 옵니다.

because when we learn of the atrocities that have happened to women,

아프리카 대륙에서 행해지는

continentally especially,

여성에 대한 잔혹 행위.

it serves as a constant reminder

이러한 것들은

that one step out of our designated place

여성이 영역 밖에 발을 딛였을 때 당할 수 있는 것들을

may end up in very serious consequences.

늘 생각하게 만들기 때문입니다.

Well, I use my drum to tell my story and my people's stories.

드럼을 통해서 저와 아프리카인들의 이야기를 말합니다.

My roots shaped me and my culture is here to stay with me.

저의 뿌리와 저의 문화는 늘 저와 함께 있습니다.

Women can be custodians of culture, too.

여성도 문화의 보호자가 될 수 있습니다.

We are born to bring forth life,

우리는 삶을 정진시키고 양육하기 위해서

to nurture it.

태어났으니까요.

We can definitely preserve our traditions very, very excellently.

우리는 우리의 전통을 잘 지킬 수 있습니다.

My drum and I,

저의 드럼과 저는

we are here to stay.

계속 함께 남아 있을 것입니다.

We are definitely here to stay.

우리는 반드시 남아 있을 것입니다.

If women have led countries,

여성이 대통령이 될 수 있고

women have gone to space,

우주에 갈 수 있고

women have won Grammys,

그래미상을 받을 수 있다면

then the same, same women can play the drum

그 여성은 드럼을 칠 수 있습니다.

and play it -- to a five-star rating?

드럼으로 평점 5점으로 끝날까요?

No, to a million-star rating.

아니죠. 평점 백만 점은 받을 겁니다.
