A cold January day of 2005,

2005년, 추웠던 1월 어느 날

I took one of my most important drives of my life.

I was on this road in upstate New York,

trying to find this old factory.

The day before, I received a flyer in the mail

that said, "Fully equipped yogurt plant for sale."

I threw it in the garbage can.

처음에는 그 종이를 쓰레기통에 넣었어요.

And 20 minutes later, I picked it up and called the number.

20분 후에 다시 그 종이를 꺼내서 거기로 전화를 해봤죠.

The plant was 85 years old,

그 공장은 지어진 지 85년 정도 되었고

and it was closing.

문을 닫는다고 했어요.

So I decided to go see it.

가서 직접 봐야겠더라고요.

At this time,

그때 당시만 해도

I wasn't sure where this road or my life was going.

어떤 일이 생길 거라고는 생각지 못했어요.

I owned a small cheese shop

저는 작은 치즈 가게를 가지고 있었는데

but really hated business.

그 장사는 정말 재미없었어요.

But the hills and the roads and the smells are all familiar.

그래도 언덕이며, 도로며, 냄새는 아주 익숙했었죠.

I grew up in Turkey, in a similar environment,

저는 터키에서 자랐는데 거기 생활환경도 아주 비슷했어요.

near the Kurdish mountains.

옆에 바로 쿠르드 산맥이 있었죠.

My family made cheese and yogurt;

우리 가족은 치즈와 요구르트를 만들었고

I grew up listening to shepherd's stories.

어릴 때부터 목동 이야기를 들으며 자랐어요.

We didn't have much,

가진 건 별로 없었지만

but we had the moon and the stars, simple food, each other.

별과 달, 소박한 음식과 가족이 있었어요.

Eventually, I came to America.

나중에 저는 미국으로 왔어요.

I didn't even know New York had farms.

당시에는 뉴욕에 농장이 있는지도 몰랐어요.

I made it to upstate, and I never left.

북부에 터전을 잡을 수 있었고 그 후로도 계속 살았어요.

Now I'm lost.

무슨 이야기를 하고 있었죠?

I passed the road sign that said "Dead end."

그래서 운전을 해서 가고 있는데 "막다른 길"이라는 표지판을 봤어요.

Then soon after,

그리고 얼마 안 가서

there it was:

바로 거기에

the factory.

공장이 있더군요.

The smell hit me first.

일단 냄새가 먼저 절 반겼어요.

It was a like a milk container left out in the sun.

햇볕 아래에 방치해 놓은 우유 통 냄새가 났어요.

The walls were so thick,

벽은 아주 두꺼웠고

paints were peeling, there were cracks everywhere.

페인트는 벗겨지고 건물은 온통 갈라져 있더라고요.

The factory was so old, the owners thought it was worthless.

공장은 지은 지가 너무 오래 돼서 거의 쓸모없다고 생각했나 봐요.

I thought they left a zero off,

저는 숫자 끝에 0 하나가 빠진 줄 알았어요.

I couldn't believe the price.

믿을 수 없는 가격이었어요.

As I entered in,

공장 안에 들어갔을 때

I stopped noticing things.

더는 시설이 눈에 들어오지 않았어요.

All I could see were the people.

내 눈에 보이는 거라곤 사람들뿐이었죠.

There were 55 of them.

일하는 사람들이 55명이 있었어요.

Just quiet.

다들 조용했죠.

Their only job was to break the plant apart

남은 일이라곤 공장을 철거한 뒤

and close it forever.

아예 문을 닫는 것 뿐이었죠.

I was met with a guy named Rich,

거기서 리치라는 한 남자를 만났는데

the production manager.

거기 생산 관리자였어요.

He offered to take me around, show me around.

저에게 공장을 견학시켜주겠다고 하더라고요.

He didn't say much,

말이 많지는 않았지만

but around every corner, he would point out some stories.

모퉁이를 돌 때마다 그 장소가 품은 이야기를 해줬어요.

Rich worked there for 20 years.

리치는 거기서 20년을 일했어요.

His father made yogurt before him,

리치 아버지도 요구르트를 만들었어요.

and his grandfather made cream cheese before that.

그리고 할아버지는 크림치즈를 만들었고요.

You could tell that Rich felt guilty

리치는 확실히 죄책감을 느끼고 있더라고요.

that this factory was closing on his watch.

본인이 지켜보고 있는 가운데 이렇게 공장이 문을 닫으니까요.

What hit me the hardest at that time

제게 가장 가슴이 아팠던 건

was that this wasn't just an old factory.

이게 그냥 오래된 공장이 아니라는 거였어요.

This was a time machine.

타임머신이었죠.

This is where people built lives, they left for wars,

사람들은 이 공장에서 삶을 꾸리고 전쟁터에 나가기도 하고

they bragged about home runs and report cards.

홈런을 친 걸 자랑하고 성적표를 자랑했어요.

But now, it was closing.

그런데 지금은 문을 닫게 생겼잖아요.

And the company wasn't just giving up on yogurt,

그래서 이 폐업은 요구르트만 그만 만드는 게 아니라

it was giving up on them.

사람들을 저버리는 거였죠.

As if they were not good enough.

마치 쓸모없는 것처럼요.

And I was shocked how these people were behaving.

그런데 전 오히려 일하는 사람들의 반응이 충격적이었어요.

There was no anger, there were no tears.

화내는 사람도 없었고 눈물을 보이는 사람도 없었어요.

Just silence.

그저 다들 조용했죠.

With grace, they were closing this factory.

품위 있게 공장을 폐쇄하는 겁니다.

I was so angry

저는 너무 화가 났죠.

that the CEO was far away,

여기 사장은 아주 먼 곳에

in a tower or somewhere,

높은 빌딩인가 어딘가에서

looking at the spreadsheets

재무제표나 쳐다보면서

and closing the factory.

이 공장을 닫기로 결정했을 거예요.

Spreadsheets are lazy.

그런 표가 무슨 소용이 있나요.

They don't tell you about people, they don't tell you about communities.

거기엔 사람들에 대한 이야기나 공동체에 대한 이야기도 없죠.

But unfortunately,

하지만 안타깝게도

this is how too many business decisions are made today.

대부분 사업상의 결정은 이런 식으로 내리게 돼요.

I was never the same person after what I saw.

하지만 그 광경을 본 저는 더는 그런 방법에 기댈 수 없었어요.

On my way back home, I called Mario, my lawyer.

집으로 돌아오는 길에 변호사인 마리오에게 연락했죠.

I called Mario, I said, "Mario, I want to buy this place."

마리오에게 이렇게 말했어요. "마리오, 이 공장 내가 매입하려고."

Mario said,

그러자 마리오가 말했죠.

"Hamdi, one of the largest food companies in the world is closing this place,

"함디, 세계 최대 식품업체도

여길 포기하고 닫았잖아요.

and they're getting out of the yogurt business.

걔네도 요구르트 사업을 접는다고요.

Who the hell are you to make it work?"

대체 어떻게 하려고 이걸 사들여요?"

I said, "You're right."

전 대답했죠. "그래, 알겠어."

But the next day, I called him again,

그러고는 다음날 다시 전화를 했어요.

and I said, "Mario, really, I really want to buy this place."

"마리오, 그런데 정말 여길 내가 사야겠어."

He said, "Hamdi, you have no money.

마리오가 그랬죠. "함디, 돈이 없잖아요."

(Laughter)

You haven't even paid me in six months."

"지금 저한테도 6개월째 돈 안 주시면서"

Which was true.

맞는 말이었어요.

(Laughter)

But I got a loan, another loan.

그래도 전 대출을 여러 번 받았어요.

By August 2005, I had the keys for this factory.

그리고 2005년 8월에 그 공장 열쇠를 제 손에 쥐게 되었죠.

The first thing I did was to hire four of the original 55 people.

일단 원래 있던 55명의 노동자 중 4명을 일터로 복귀시켰어요.

I had Maria, the office manager.

사무실 관리자였던 마리아를 고용했고

I had Frank, the wastewater guy.

폐수 담당인 프랭크도 고용했죠.

I had Mike, the maintenance guy.

관리인 마이크도 다시 불러들였고

And Rich, who showed me the plant, the production guy.

공장 견학을 시켜줬던 생산 관리자 리치도 다시 불렀어요.

And we had our first board meeting.

그리고 처음으로 이사회를 열었어요.

Mike says, "Hamdi, what are we going to do now?"

마이크가 물었어요. "함디, 이제 어쩌죠?"

They look at me as if I have the magic answer.

내가 답이라도 알고 있는 양 일제히 저를 쳐다봤어요.

So I said, "Mike,

그래서 대답했죠. "마이크

we're going to go to Ace Hardware store,

일단 에이스 철물점으로 가서

and we're going to get some paints.

페인트를 좀 사 와야지.

And we're going to paint the walls outside."

그리고 외벽을 다시 칠해야 해."

Mike wasn't impressed.

마이크는 시큰둥했죠.

He looked at me.

그는 절 다시 쳐다봤어요.

He said, "Hamdi, that's fine, we’ll do that,

"함디, 무슨 말인지는 알겠는데요. 외벽은 칠할게요.

but tell me you have more ideas than that."

그런데 그게 전부는 아닌 거죠?"

I said, "I do.

그래서 제가, "당연히 아니지.

We'll paint the walls white."

벽을 흰색으로 바꿀 거거든."

(Laughter)

Honest to God, that was the only idea I had.

솔직히 말씀드리는데 사실 그게 다였어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But we painted those walls that summer.

결국 그해 여름에 저희는 벽을 다 칠했어요.

I sometimes wonder

가끔 궁금하긴 해요.

what they would have said to me if I told them,

만약 제가 그 자리에서 이런 말을 했다면 어땠을까요?

"See these walls we're painting?

"우리가 지금 칠하고 있는 이 공장 말이야.

In two years,

2년 안에

we're going to launch a yogurt here

여기서 요구르트를 생산할 거야.

that Americans have never seen and never tasted before.

그런데 그 요구르트는 미국인들이 듣도 보도 못한 거야.

It will be delicious, it will be natural.

아주 맛있을 거고 건강한 재료를 쓸 거야.

And we're going to call it 'Chobani' -- it means 'shepherd' in Turkish."

그리고 그 요구르트 이름은 '초바니'야. 터키어로 '목동'이라는 뜻이야."

And if I said,

만약 제가

"We are going to hire all of the 55 employees back,

"원래 일했던 55명을 전부, 아니면 거의 다 다시 고용할 거야.

or most of them back.

And then 100 more after, and then 100 more after,

그리고 100명 더 고용하고, 또 100명을 더 고용하고

and then 1,000 more after that."

또 1,000명을 더" 라고 말했다면 어땠을까요?

But if I told them, "You see that town over there?

만약 이렇게 말했다면요? "저기 저 마을 보여?

Every person we hire, 10 more local jobs will be created.

우리가 한 명을 고용할 때마다 이 지역에 직장이 10개씩 더 생길 거야.

The town will come back to life, the trucks will be all over the roads.

마을은 다시 일어날 거고 길에는 트럭으로 즐비하게 될 거야.

And the first money we make,

그리고 우리가 처음 수익을 올리면

we're going to build one of the best Little League baseball fields

어린이 야구단을 위한 최고의 경기장을 만들 거야.

for our children.

우리 아이들을 위해서 말이야.

And five years after that,

그리고 5년이 지나면

we're going to be the number one Greek yogurt brand in the country."

우리 회사는 미국에서 가장 큰 그리스식 요구르트 회사가 될 거야."

Would they have believed me?

사람들이 제 말을 믿어줬을까요?

Of course not.

당연히 아니겠지요.

But that's exactly what happened.

하지만 이런 일들이 모두 일어났어요.

In painting those walls,

벽을 함께 칠하면서

we got to know each other.

우리는 서로를 알아갔어요.

We believed in each other.

우리는 서로를 믿었어요.

And we figured it out together.

그리고 우리는 함께 힘을 합쳤죠.

Five years, me and all my colleagues, we never left the factory.

5년 동안 우리들은 회사를 떠난 적이 없어요.

We worked day and night, through the holidays,

밤낮없이 일하고 휴일도 없었죠.

to fix that plant.

공장을 고치느라 바빴거든요.

The best part of Chobani for me is this:

초바니에서 가장 마음에 드는 건요.

the same exact people who were given up on

버림받은 바로 그 사람들이

were the ones who built it back 100 times better than before.

이 회사를 100배나 더 성장시켰다는 거예요.

And they all have a financial stake in the company today.

그리고 지금은 모두 지분을 가지고 있죠.

And all this time, I kept wondering --

그리고 지금까지 전 계속 의문을 품었어요.

you see, I'm not a businessman, I don't come from that tradition --

사실 저는 사업가가 아니에요. 그런 환경에서 자란 사람이 아니죠.

I just kept wondering: What is this all about?

그래서 자꾸 궁금했죠. 어떻게 이런 일이 생겼을까?

Corporate America says it's about profits.

미국 경제계는 수익이 가장 중요하다고 하죠.

Mainstream business says it's about money.

주류 산업은 돈이 가장 중요하다고 말해요.

The CEO playbook says it's about shareholders.

CEO의 지침서에 따르면 주주들이 중요하다고 말해요.

And so much is sacrificed for it -- it's factories, communities, jobs.

그리고 그걸 위해서 공장이나 공동체, 직장이 희생당하는 거죠.

But not by CEOs.

그런데 CEO가 직접 겪는 아픔은 아니에요.

CEOs have their employees suffer for them.

고용된 사람들이 당하는 일이죠.

But yet, the CEOs's pay goes up and up and up.

그런데도 CEO는 항상 더 많이 벌어요.

And so many people are left behind.

사람들은 대부분 버림받게 되죠.

I'm here to tell you:

그래서 이런 말씀을 드리고 싶어요.

no more.

그만두세요.

It's not right, it's never been right.

그건 정당한 방법이 아니에요.

It's time to admit

이제 인정할 때가 되었어요.

that the playbook that guided businesses and CEOs for the last 40 years

지난 40년 동안 사업체와 CEO를 이끌었던 지침서는 이제

is broken.

소용없다는 걸요.

It tells you everything about business

그 지침서는 사업에 대해서는 잘 알려주지만

except how to be a noble leader.

We need a new playbook.

We need a new playbook that sees people again.

다시 사람들을 존중하는 그런 지침서가 필요해요.

That sees above and beyond profits.

수익에 매달리지 않고 그 너머를 볼 수 있어야 해요.

In the movies, they have a name for people who take a different path

영화에 보면 이런 사람들이 나와요. 남들이 가지 않은 길을 가고

to do things right.

옳은 일을 하는 사람들

They call them "antiheroes."

"안티히어로"라고 불리죠.

I think we need the same idea in business.

비즈니스에도 이런 개념이 있어야 해요.

We need anti-CEOs, and we need an anti-CEO playbook.

우리는 안티 CEO, 안티 CEO 지침서가 필요해요.

So let me tell you about what this anti-CEO playbook is all about.

An anti-CEO playbook is about gratitude.

안티 CEO 지침서는 감사하는 마음에서 시작해요.

Today's business book says:

요즘 경영은 이렇게 말하죠.

business exists to maximize profit for the shareholders.

사업체는 주주를 위해 이윤을 극대화한다.

I think that's the dumbest idea I've ever heard in my life.

제가 살면서 들은 말 중에 제일 멍청한 소리네요.

(Laughter)

In reality, business should take care of their employees first.

실생활에서는 사업체가 노동자를 먼저 돌봐야 해요.

(Applause)

You know, a few years ago,

몇 년 전에 제가

when we announced that we are giving shares to all our 2,000 employees,

2,000명의 직원에게 모두 지분을 나눠준다고 말했을 때

some people said it's PR, some said it's a gift.

이걸 홍보전략이라고 말하는 사람도 있고 선물이라고 말하는 사람도 있었어요.

I said, it's not a gift.

그래서 저는 이게 선물이 아니라고 말했죠.

I watched it, I've been part of it.

제가 직접 봤잖아요. 저도 직접 참여했어요.

They earned it with their talent and with their hard work,

사람들은 자기의 재능과 땀으로 마땅히 얻어낸 거예요.

and I don't see any other way.

이건 달리 말할 방법이 없어요.

The new way of business --

새로운 사업 지침에서는

it's your employees you take care of first.

가장 먼저 직원을 보살펴야 해요.

Not the profits.

사업이익이 아니라요.

The new anti-CEO playbook is about community.

안티 CEO 지침서는 공동체를 생각해요.

Today, the businesses that have it all

요즘 잘나가는 기업들은

ask communities, "What kind of tax breaks and incentives can you give me?"

오히려 공동체에 요구해요. "세금 감세는 얼마나 해줄 건데?"

The reality is, businesses should go to the struggling communities

하지만 현실에서는 이런 기업들이 힘들어하는 공동체에 다가가서

and ask, "How can I help you?"

"어떻게 도와줄까요?" 라고 물어야 해요.

When we wanted to build our second yogurt plant,

저희가 두 번째 요구르트 공장을 지을 때

Idaho was on nobody's radar screen.

아무도 아이다호는 거들떠보지도 않았어요.

It was too rural, too far away, didn't have much incentives.

너무 시골인 데다 멀기도 하고 세금 우대책도 없었거든요.

So I went there.

그래서 저는 거기로 갔어요.

I met with the local people, I met with the farmers.

지역 주민과 만났고 농부들과 만났어요.

We shook hands, we broke bread.

서로 악수도 하고 식사도 했어요.

I said, "I want to build it right here."

전 "여기에 공장 지으면 딱이겠네요." 라고 말했어요.

I don't need to see financial studies.

재정 연구 따위는 볼 필요도 없었어요.

And the result --

그리고 결과적으로

its community is thriving.

그 지역은 번성하고 있어요.

There's new schools that open every year.

매년 새로운 학교가 문을 열고

New food companies are coming up every year.

매년 새로운 식품업체가 발을 들이고 있죠.

And they told me,

사람들은 저에게

"You're not going to find any trained workers here."

"여기는 괜찮은 직원들이 없을 겁니다." 라고 했어요.

I said, "It's OK, we'll teach them."

저는 말했어요. "괜찮아요. 가르치면 되죠."

We partnered with the local community college,

저희는 지역 2년제 대학과 손을 잡고

and while we were building the plant,

공장을 짓는 동안

we trained hundreds of hundreds of people for advanced manufacturing.

And today, our factory is one of the largest yogurt plants in the world.

The anti-CEO playbook is about responsibility.

안티 CEO 지침서는 책임에 대해서도 중요하게 생각해요.

Today's playbook says, the businesses should stay out of politics.

요즘 경영 지침은 기업체가 정치에 끼어들면 안 되죠.

The reality is

하지만 현실은

businesses, as citizens, must take a side.

기업도 역시 시민단체로서 의견을 가지고 있어야 해요.

When we were growing in New York and looking for more people to hire,

뉴욕에서 한창 사업이 커져서 사람들을 더 고용해야 했는데

I remembered that in Utica, an hour away,

한 시간 정도 떨어진 유티카라는 곳이 생각났어요.

there were refugees from Southeast Asia and Africa,

거기는 동남아시아와 아프리카에서 온 난민들이

who were looking for a place to work.

일거리를 찾고 있었어요.

"They don't speak English," someone told me.

주변에서 "그 사람들 영어 못해요." 라고 말하길래

I said, "I don't really, either. Let's get translators."

저는 "나도 마찬가지예요. 번역가를 구하죠, 뭐"라고 답했어요.

"They don't have transportation."

"그 사람들 차도 없어요."라고 하길래

I said, "Let's get buses, it's not a rocket science."

"그럼 버스를 쓰죠, 뭐. 어려운 일도 아닌데요."라고 말했어요.

Today,

그래서 오늘날

in one of America's rural areas,

미국의 시골 마을 중 하나에는

30 percent of the Chobani workforce are immigrants and refugees.

초바니에서 일하는 30%가 이민자와 난민으로 구성되어있어요.

And it changed us for better.

오히려 상황이 더 좋아졌어요.

The new way of business --

새로운 사업방식은

it's business, not government, in the best position to make a change

정부보다는 기업이 변화를 이끌기가 더 쉬워요.

in today's world:

in gun violence, in climate change,

총기 사건이나 기후 변화,

in income inequality, in refugees, in race.

임금 격차나 난민 문제, 인종 문제들

It's business that must take a side.

이런 건 기업들이 끼어들어야 해요.

And lastly, an anti-CEO playbook is about accountability.

마지막으로 안티 CEO 지침서에는 설명의 의무가 있어요.

Today's playbook says, the CEO reports to the corporate boards.

지금 경영 지침에 따르면 CEO는 이사회에 보고하죠.

In my opinion, CEO reports to consumer.

그런데 제 생각에 CEO는 소비자에게 보고하는 게 맞아요.

In the first few years of Chobani,

초바니를 만들고 초기 몇 년간

the 1-800 number on the cup was my personal number.

요구르트 컵에 적힌 고객센터 번호는 제 개인 번호였어요.

(Laughter)

When somebody called and wrote, I responded personally.

누가 전화하거나 문자를 하면 개인적으로 답장했어요.

Sometimes I made changes based on what I heard,

그리고 가끔은 그 의견에 따라 결정을 바꾸기도 했죠.

because consumer is in power.

왜냐하면 소비자가 결정권자니까요.

That's the reason the business exists.

소비자가 있어야 기업도 있는 거니까요.

It's you -- every single one of you is in power to make changes today.

바로 우리예요. 우리 한 사람 한 사람 모두 변화를 이끌 힘이 있어요.

If you don't like the brand and the companies,

만약 어떤 브랜드나 회사가 마음에 안 들거나

what they are doing with their business,

뭔가 잘못하고 있다고 생각한다면

you can throw them into the garbage can.

쓰레기통에 버려버릴 수 있죠.

And if you see the ones that are doing it right,

그리고 제대로 경영하고 있는 회사를 보면

you can reward them.

칭찬해줄 수도 있어요.

In the end, this is all in our responsibility.

결국 이건 모두 저희가 책임져야 해요.

The new way of business --

새로운 경영 방식에서는

it's the consumer we report to, not to the corporate boards.

이사회가 아니라 고객에게 상황을 보고해야 해요.

You see,

잘 생각해봐요.

if you are right with your people,

직원들에게 올바르게 대하고

if you are right with your community,

공동체에 도움을 주고

if you are right with your product,

성실하게 제품을 만든다면

you will be more profitable,

더 이익이 올라가고

you will be more innovative,

더 혁신적인 제품이 나올 거예요.

you will have more passionate people working for you

함께 일하는 사람들도 모두 더 열정적일 거고

and a community that supports you.

공동체 역시 당신을 지지할 거예요.

And that's what the anti-CEO playbook is all about.

이게 바로 안티 CEO 지침서에요.

The treasure that I found in that factory --

그 공장에서 제가 찾게 된 보물은

dignity of work,

노동의 존엄성과

strength of character,

강인함이었고

human spirit --

사람들의 기개였어요.

is what we need to unleash all across the world.

이런 정신이 온 세상에 퍼져야 해요.

Brothers and sisters,

여러분이 알아주셔야 해요.

there are people and places all around the world

이 세상에는 여전히 버림받고 낙후된

left out and left behind.

사람들과 지역이 많아요.

But their spirit is still strong.

하지만 다들 살아 숨 쉬고 있어요.

They just want another chance,

그저 기회 한 번이면 돼요.

they want someone to give them a chance again,

누군가 기회를 주기만 기다리고 있어요.

not to just build it back, but build it better than before.
