In 1969, I was standing behind

Hearing about these things happening on the set in the front,

And what they were watching

Neil [Armstrong] and Buzz Aldrin were walking on the Moon.

And I was five years old in Lynchburg, Virginia,

a skinny black kid in a kind of somewhat racist town.

And I was trying to figure out what I was going to do with my life.

And my parents, you know, they were educators,

But after that moon landing, all the kids in the neighborhood

I'm like, "No."

I don't want a buzz cut, and I don't see someone who looks like me.

Because representation does matter.

And I knew that there was a guy

five blocks down the street on Pierce Street

who was training to play tennis.

And it was Arthur Ashe.

And my dad talked about his character, his discipline,

his intelligence, his athleticism.

I wanted to be Arthur Ashe,

I didn't want to be one of those moon guys.

And as I went on through this journey,

my dad, who was a school teacher, he played in a band,

he did all these things to make money for my sister and I

to take piano lessons

and do these different things with education.

And he one day decides to drive up into the driveway with this bread truck.

And I'm thinking, "OK, bread truck,

me delivering bread while my dad's driving the truck."

I'm like, "OK, I'm going to be a bread guy now."

But he says, "This is our camper."

I'm like, "Dude, come one, I can read: 'Merita Bread and Rolls'

on the side of this truck.

And he says, "No, we're going to build this into our camper."

그러자 아빠는 이 차를 우리 캠핑카로 만들겠다고 했어요.

And over that summer, we rewired the entire electrical system.

그래서 여름 내내, 저희는 전체 전자 배선을 다시 설치했습니다.

We plumbed a propane tank to a Coleman stove,

we built bunk beds that flip down.

We were turning this into our summer vacation launch pad, escape pod,

And before that,

I was actually raped at five by some neighbors.

And I didn't tell anyone,

because I had friends that didn't have fathers.

And I knew that my father

would have killed the people that did that to his son.

And I didn't want my father to be gone.

So as we got in this bread truck and escaped from Lynchburg,

it was my time with my dad.

And we went to the Smoky Mountains

and looked at the purple mountains' majesty.

And we walked along the beach in Myrtle Beach,

and this thing was transformative.

It showed me what it meant to be an explorer, at a very early age.

And I suppressed all that negativity,

because I was learning to be an explorer.

And a little bit later, my mother gave me an age-inappropriate,

where I created the most incredible explosion in her living room.

And so I knew I could be a chemist.

So as I went on this journey through a high school,

화학자가 되기 위해 고등학교,

and I went to college,

and I got a football scholarship to play football in college.

대학에서 풋볼선수로 뛰며, 풋볼선수 장학금까지 받았죠.

And I knew that I could be a chemist, because I'd already blown stuff up.

(Laughter)

And when I graduated,

I got drafted to the Detroit Lions.

저는 디트로이트 라이온스 팀에 선발되었지만

But I pulled a hamstring in training camp,

and so what every former NFL player does, they go work for NASA, right?

So I went to work for NASA.

And this friend of mine said, "Leland, you'd be great astronaut."

I just laughed at him, I was like, "Yeah, me, an astronaut?"

저는 걔를 비웃으면서, "내가? 우주비행사가 된다고?"

You know that Neil and Buzz thing from back in '69?

1969년도 닐 암스트롱과 버즈 올드린 기억나시죠?

And he handed me an application, and I looked at it,

and I didn't fill it out.

작성하진 않았어요.

And that same year, another friend of mine filled out the application

and he got in.

And I said to myself,

"If NASA's letting knuckleheads like that be astronauts,"

"maybe I can be one, too."

So the next selection, I filled out the application, and I got in.

And I didn't know what it meant to be an astronaut:

the training, the simulations,

all these things to get you ready for this countdown:

three, two, one, liftoff.

And in 2007, I was in Space Shuttle "Atlantis," careening off the planet,

traveling at 17,500 miles per hour.

And eight and a half minutes later,

the main engines cut off, and we're now floating in space.

And I push off and float over to the window,

and I can see the Caribbean.

And I need new definitions of blue to describe the colors that I see.

don't do any justice to what I see with my eyes.

And my job on this mission was to install

this two-billion dollar Columbus laboratory.

It was a research laboratory

for materials research, for human research.

And I reached into the payload bay of the space shuttle,

grabbed out this big module,

and I used the robotic arm and I attached it to the space station.

And the European team have been waiting 10 years for this thing to get installed,

so I'm sure everyone in Europe was like, "Leland! Leland! Leland!"

And so this moment happened, this was our primary mission objective,

And I had this big sigh of relief.

But then, Peggy Whitson, the first female commander,

she invited us over to the Russian segment.

And the space station's about the size of a football field,

with solar panel and trusses and all of these modules.

And she says, "Leland, you go get the rehydrated vegetables,

So we float over with the bag of vegetables, all rehydrated,

and we get there.

And there's this moment

where I get [transported] back to my mother's kitchen.

엄마 부엌으로 되돌아 온 듯한 느낌을 받았어요.

You can smell the beef and barley heating up,

소고기과 보리가 구워지는 냄새가 나고,

you can smell the food, the colors,

음식 냄새, 색깔들,

and there are people there from all around the world.

전세계에서 온 사람들까지 다 거기에 있었죠.

It's like a Benetton commercial,

마치 베네통 광고처럼,

you know, you have African American, Asian American, French, German, Russian,

흑인, 아시아계 미국인, 프랑스인, 독일인, 러시아인

the first female commander,

최초의 여성 지휘관,

breaking bread at 17,500 miles per hour,

함께 시속 28km를 달리며 식사를 하고

going around the planet every 90 minutes,

90분마다 지구 주위를 돌면서

seeing a sunrise and a sunset every 45.

45분마다 일출과 일몰을 바라보는 것.

And Peggy would say, "Hey, Leland, try some of this,"

and she'd float it over to my mouth,

and I'd catch it and we'd go back and forth.

And we're doing all of this while listening to Sade's "Smooth Operator."

I mean, this is like blowing my mind, you know.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And I float over to the window, and I look down at the planet,

창가로 다가가서 지구를 내려다 보면

and I see all of humanity.

모든 인류가 보입니다.

And my perspective changes at that moment,

제 관점은 그 순간 변화합니다.

because, I'm flying over Lynchburg, Virginia, my home town,

제 고향인 버지니아주, 린치버그 위를 날아가고 있을 때

and my family's probably breaking bread.

저희 가족은 아마 식사를 하고 있겠죠.

And five minutes later, we're flying over Paris,

5분 후, 우리는 파리 상공을 날고 있고,

where Leo Eyharts is looking down at his parents,

probably having some wine and cheese,

and Yuri's looking off to Moscow,

and they're probably eating borscht or something else.

But we're all having this moment where we see our respective families

그런데 우리에게는 각자의 부모님을

시속 28km로 날아다니고, 하나의 공동체에서 일하며

working together as one civilization,

내려다 볼 수 있는 기회가 주어졌습니다.

at 17,500 miles per hour.

My perspective shifted cognitively,

제 관점은 완전히 바뀌었고,

it changed me.

저를 변화시켰습니다.

And when I think about being that little skinny boy,

버지나아주, 린치버그에서 살던 작고 깡마른 남자아이였던 때를

from sometimes racist Lynchburg, Virginia,

종종 생각해 보면,

I would never have had that perspective

저는 제 자신이 우주비행사가 될 수도 있다는 그런 생각을

to think about myself of being an astronaut,

절대 못했을 겁니다.

if my father hadn't taken us on a journey

저희 아버지가 저희가 급하게 손수 만든 그 캠핑카로

in this radical craft that we built with our own two hands.

저희를 여행에 데려가지 않았다면요.

When I came home,

집으로 돌아온 저는,

I realized that perspective is something

관점은 우리가 받고 가지고 있는 그 모든 것이라는

that we all get and we all have.

사실을 깨달았습니다.

It's just how far do we open up our blinders

그냥 단지 우리가 눈가리개를 얼마나 벗고

to see that shift and that change.

변화를 바라볼 수 있는가의 문제였어요.

And going back to the space station,

우주 정거장으로 돌아가서,

I think of, you know, Germans and Russians fighting Americans.

독일인과 러시아인과 미국인들이 싸우고 있습니다.

We have these people living and working together.

이런 사람들이 함께 살고 일하고 있습니다.

White folks, black folks, Russian folks, French folks, you know.

백인들, 흑인들, 러시아인들, 프랑스인들 모두 말이죠.

All these different people coexisting in harmony as one race.

이런 다른 사람들이 하나의 인종으로 공존하고 있습니다.

And I think about the colors that I saw, the design of the modules,

제가 본 색깔에 대해서 생각하고, 모듈의 디자인과

the way that things fit together,

모듈들이 맞춰가는 방식에 대해 생각하고,

the way that it made us a community, our home.

이 방법이 저희를 하나의 공동체, 집으로 만드는 것이죠.

And so when I look up to space now,

요즘 저는 우주를 올려다 보면서,

and I have this newfound perspective

제게 생긴 이 새로운 관점으로

on the space station going overhead and looking there,

높은 하늘 위에 떠다니는 우주정거장을 바라보고

and then looking back at my community

그러면서 다시 나의 공동체를 되돌아보면서

and seeing the people that I'm living and working with,

저와 함께 살고 함께 일하고 있는

and coexisting with,

공존하고 있는 사람들을 바라봅니다.

I think it's something that we all can do now, especially in these times,

우리 모두가 할 수 있는 일이 있을 거예요, 특히 오늘날에는요.

to make sure that we have the right perspective.

우리의 관점이 옳다는 것을 확인할 수 있는 일이요.

So I have to tell you

먼저 제가 말씀드릴 건

that in my family, we watch a lot of space movies

저희 가족들은 우주와 관련 된 영화를 엄청 많이 봤다는 겁니다.

about astronauts and stuff like that.

우주비행사와 그와 관련된 것들 다.

I can't tell you why, but we do.

이유는 모르겠지만, 그랬어요.

(Laughter)

The thing that I wanted to ask you, though,

당신에게 물어보고 싶은 건,

is that we were seeing this movie the other day,

저희가 일전에 영화를 봤는데,

and it was about one of the astronauts, one of your colleagues,

당신의 동료 우주비행사 중 한 명에 관한 내용이었던 것 같아요.

and before he went up into space,

거기서 그는 우주로 가기 전에,

they actually wrote an obituary, NASA wrote an obituary for him.

And I was like, is that normal?

And is that part of the job?

Do you think about that peril that you're putting yourself in

as you go into space?

LM: Yeah.

So, I don't remember anyone writing my obituary,

maybe that was an Apollo-day thing.

But I do know that in the 135 shuttle flights that we've had,

the shuttle that I flew on,

we had two accidents that killed everyone on that mission.

임무를 수행하다가 전원이 사망한 사고가 두 번 있었습니다.

And we all know the perils and the risks that go along with this,

그래서 저희 모두 여기에 따르는 위험부담에 대해서 잘 알고 있지만,

but we're doing something that's much bigger than ourselves,

저희는 저희 자신보다 훨씬 더 중요한 일인,

and helping advance civilization,

문명의 발전에 기여하기 때문에

so the risk is worth the reward.

위험을 감수할만한 가치가 있습니다.

And we all feel that way when we get into that vehicle

저희 모두 우주선에 몸을 싣고

ans strap into those million pounds of rocket fuel and go up to space.

몇십 킬로그램이나 되는 연료를 싣고 우주로 나갈 때 그런 생각을 합니다.

CP: Yeah, I've only seen the Hollywood version --

it looks pretty terrifying, I have to tell you.

LM: You should go.

CP: Yeah, my husband's told me that a few times.

저희 남편도 몇 번이나 권하긴 했어요.

(Laughter)

LM: One-way trip or two-way?

편도 아니면 왕복이요?

(Laughter)

CP: That’s a bit of a debate in our house.

I wanted to, if I may ...

저...실례가 안 된다면...

You did touch on something that was very powerful and difficult,

감정적으로 굉장히 하기 힘든 이야기를 꺼내셨는데요.

which is, you spoke about this incident

그 사건에 대해서 얘기하셨는데

that had happened to you when you were five years old,

5살 때 당신이 겪었던 그일,

and that you were raped.

당신이 강간을 당했다던 일이요.

And I just think that for you to be able to say those things,

이런 일들을 이야기해 주신 것 자체가 전 그냥

you know, on the TED stage,

그러니까 TED 강연장 같은 이런 곳에서

to be able to talk about that at all,

그 얘기를 전부 할 수 있다는 것 자체가

is pretty fearless.

굉장한 용기라고 생각해요.

And I wanted to get a sense from you,

그리고 제가 짐작한 건대

is that something that you think is important for you to share that now,

이런 이야기를 이런 자리에서 지금 공유하는 것이 중요하다고 생각해

to speak about it?

말씀하신 것 같은데요?

LM: It's so important, especially for men, to talk about things that have happened,

엄청 중요해요. 특히 남성들에게. 그러한 일이 일어났다고 말하는 것이.

because we've been trained

저희는 사회에서 항상 강인하고 용감해야 된다고

and told by our society that we have to be so tough and so hard

훈련받고 교육받기 때문에

and we can't tell of things that are happening to us.

이런 일들을 당했다고 말할 수가 없잖아요.

But I've had so many men contact me and tell me that,

하지만 저에게 연락한 수많은 남성들이 저에게 말하길

"You came through that, you got over that,

"당신도 이겨냈고, 당신도 극복했으니,

I'm going to get over my alcoholism,"

저도 알콜중독을 극복할게요."

and these things that are going on in them,

이러한 일들이 그들에게 일어나고 있고,

because of what happened to them.

왜냐하면 그들에게 어떤 일이 일어났기 때문이죠.

And so we must share these stories, this is part of storytelling,

저희는 이런 이야기들을 공유해야 해요. 저희를 치유하고

공동체를 하나로 묶는 이야기의 일부이기 때문이죠.

to heal us and to make us whole as a community.

CP: That's wonderful.

그건 멋진 일이네요.

And you know, quite honestly, you spoke about perspective shift,

and that is a shift that I think we've been very slow to accept

and to be able to speak about that, so we thank you for that.
