I was only nine

when my grandfather first described to me the horrors he witnessed six years earlier

when human stampedes killed 39 people

제가 살던 마을인 인도 나시크에서는

in our hometown of Nashik, India.

군중에 깔려 39명이 죽었어요.

It was during the 2003 Nashik Kumbh Mela,

이 사건은 2003년 세계에서 가장 큰 종교 축제중 하나인

one of the world's largest religious gatherings.

나시크 쿰 멜라가 진행되던 중에 일어났어요.

Every 12 years, over 30 million Hindu worshippers

12년마다 3천만이 넘는 힌두교 신자가

descend upon our city --

우리 도시를 찾아옵니다.

which is built only for 1.5 million people --

고작 백 오십만 명을 수용할 수 있는 도시에

and stay for 45 days.

45일간 머무릅니디.

The main purpose is to wash away all their sins

이 방문의 주된 목적은 고다바리 강에서

by bathing in the river Godavari.

목욕을 해서 죄를 씻어없애는 것입니다.

And stampedes may easily happen

그리고 압사사고는 아주 일어나기 쉬운데요.

because a high-density crowd moves at a slow pace.

빽빽하게 밀집한 군중이 천천히 움직이기 때문이죠.

Apart from Nashik, this event happens in three other places in India,

나시크 말고도 이 축제는 인도의 다른 세 곳에서 하는데요.

with varying frequency,

그 횟수는 전부 다릅니다.

and between 2001 and 2014,

2001년과 2014년 사이

over 2,400 lives have been lost in stampedes at these events.

이 축제로 사망한 사람 수는 2,400명을 넘습니다.

What saddened me the most

절 가장 슬프게 하는 것은

is seeing people around me resigning to the city's fate

쿰 멜라가 진행될 때 마다 도시의 운명이 그저

in witnessing the seemingly inevitable deaths of dozens

수십 명의 죽음을 바라보는 수밖에 없다는 듯한

at every Kumbh Mela.

주위 사람들의 태도입니다.

I sought to change this,

전 이 상황을 바꿔버리고 싶었어요.

and I thought, why can't I try to find a solution to this?

그리고 해결하지 못할 이유가 없다고 생각했습니다.

Because I knew it is wrong.

왜냐하면 압사사고는 잘못된 일이고

Having learned coding at an early age and being a maker,

이른 나이에 코딩을 배웠고 프로그램을 만들 수 있게 되었기 때문에

I considered the wild idea --

저는 한 가지 과감한 시도를 해보기로 했습니다.

I considered the wild idea of building a system

저는 사람들의 흐름을 통제할 수 있는

that would help regulate the flow of people

시스템을 만들어보기로 했고

and use it in the next Kumbh Mela in 2015,

다음 해인 2015년의 쿰 멜라에서 사용하여

to have fewer stampedes and, hopefully, fewer deaths.

압사로 인한 사상자를 조금이라도 줄여보기로 했습니다.

It seemed like a mission impossible,

불가능한 일로만 보였습니다.

a dream too big,

실현되기엔 너무 큰 꿈

especially for a 15-year-old,

특히 15살 아이에겐 말이죠.

yet that dream came true in 2015,

하지만 그 꿈은 2015년 현실로 이뤄졌습니다.

when not only did we succeed

압사를 막고 사람 행렬을

in reducing the stampedes and their intensity,

분산 시키는 데 성공했을 뿐만 아니라

but we marked 2015

2015년을

as the first Nashik Kumbh Mela to have zero stampedes.

나시크 쿰 멜라에서 압사사고 사상자가 없는 첫 번째 해로 만들었습니다.

It was the first time in recorded history

쿰 멜라에서 아무런

that this event passed without any casualties.

사상자가 발생하지 않은 것은 역사상 최초의 일입니다.

How did we do it?

어떻게 가능했을까요?

It all started when I joined an innovation workshop

이는 제가 2014년 MIT 미디어 연구소에 있는

by MIT Media Lab in 2014

쿰바톤(Kumbhathon)이라는 혁신 연구소에 들어가면서 시작됐습니다.

called the Kumbhathon

that aimed at solving challenges faced at the grand scale of Kumbh Mela.

이 연구소는 쿰 멜라 축제가 처한 고질적인 문제를 해결하기 위한 곳이죠.

Now, we figured out to solve the stampede problem,

그래서 압사사고를 막기 위한 방안을 찾아봤는데요.

we wanted to know only three things:

우선 세 가지를 알아야 했습니다.

the number of people, the location,

방문자의 수, 위치

and the rate of the flow of people per minute.

그리고 군중의 분당 이동 정도였습니다.

So we started to look for technologies that would help us get these three things.

그래서 이 조건을 충족시키는 기술을 찾기 시작했습니다.

Can we distribute radio-frequency tokens to identify people?

'사람들에게 라디오 주파수를 내뿜는 표식을 나눠줄까?'

We figured out that it would be too expensive and impractical

하지만 3천만이나 되는 사람들에게 일일이 나눠주는 건 비싸고

to distribute 30 million tags.

비실용적이었죠.

Can you use CCTV cameras with image-processing techniques?

'이미지를 생성하는 CCTV 카메라 기술을 사용해볼까?'

Again, too expensive for that scale,

하지만 역시 3천만을 대상으로 하기엔

along with the disadvantages of being non-portable

너무 비용이 많이 들고 갖고 다닐수 없었을 뿐더러

and being completely useless in the case of rain,

쿰 멜라가 진행되는 동안 비가 자주 내리는데

which is a common thing to happen in Kumbh Mela.

그럴 경우 완전히 무용지물이었죠.

Can we use cell phone tower data?

'휴대전화 기지국을 이용해볼까?'

It sounds like the perfect solution,

완벽한 해답같아 보이지만

but the funny part is,

재미있는 것은

most of the people do not carry cell phones

대부분의 사람들이 쿰 멜라같은 축제 동안

in events like Kumbh Mela.

카메라를 갖고 다니지 않는다는 것입니다.

Also, the data wouldn't have been granular enough for us.

또한 그 정보가 우리가 원하는 점조직 형태로 나타나지 않았죠.

So we wanted something that was real-time,

우리가 원하는 것은 실시간

low-cost, sturdy and waterproof,

저비용에 견고하고 방수가 되는

and it was easy to get the data for processing.

거기에 정보 수집에 용이한 물건이었습니다.

So we built Ashioto,

그 결과 아시오토를 만들었는데요.

meaning "footstep" in Japanese,

일본어로 발걸음을 의미하고요.

as it consists of a portable mat which has pressure sensors

압력 센서가 달린 이동 가능한 매트형태로서

which can count the number of people walking on it,

그 위를 걸어다니는 사람들의 수를 셀 수가 있고

and sends the data over the internet

우리가 만든 최신 데이터 분석 소프트웨어로

to the advanced data analysis software we created.

인터넷을 통해 그 정보를 전송합니다.

The possible errors, like overcounting or double-stepping,

사람 수를 더 많이 세거나 두 번 밟아서 생기는 등의 오류는

were overcome using design interventions.

디자인을 통해 극복했습니다.

The optimum breadth of the mat was determined to be 18 inches,

다양한 매트를 통해 실험한 결과 한 사람의 평균 보폭을 관찰해보니

after we tested many different versions

and observed the average stride length of a person.

최적의 폭은 18인치로 나타났습니다.

Otherwise, people might step over the sensor.

아니면 사람들이 센서를 밟고 경우가 생길 수도 있는데요.

We started with a proof of concept built in three days,

우리는 이 경우를 대비해서 3일에 걸쳐서

made out of cardboard and aluminum foil.

판자와 알루미늄 호일로 만든 보호막을 만들었습니다.

It worked, for real.

실제로 효과가 있었어요.

We built another one with aluminum composite panels

알루미늄 합성판과 압력을 받을 경우

and piezoelectric plates,

which are plates that generate a small pulse of electricity under pressure.

압전판을 이용한 보호막도 만들었습니다.

We tested this at 30 different pilots in public,

30명의 피실험자를 대상으로 공공장소에서 시험했는데요.

in crowded restaurants, in malls, in temples, etc.,

사람들의 반응을 관찰하기 위해 사람이 꽉 찬 레스토랑이나, 쇼핑몰

to see how people reacted.

사원 같은 곳에서 실험했습니다.

And people let us run these pilots

사람들은 실험을 흔쾌히 허락했는데요.

because they were excited to see localites work on problems for the city.

이들도 우리 도시의 문제를 해결하려는 취지에 공감했기 때문이죠.

I was 15 and my team members were in their early 20s.

저는 열다섯이었고 나머지 멤버들은 20대 초반이었습니다.

When the sensors were colored,

센서에 불이 들어왔을 때

people would get scared and would ask us questions like,

사람들은 겁을 먹고 우리에게 질문을 던졌습니다.

"Will I get electrocuted if I step on this?"

"이거 밟으면 감전되나요?"

(Laughter)

Or, if it was very obvious that it was an electronic sensor on the ground,

아니면 이것이 바닥의 전자 센서라는 것이 명백한 경우에는 뛰어 넘어갔습니다.

they would just jump over it.

(Laughter)

So we decided to design a cover for the sensor

그래서 센서를 가릴 수 있는 가림막을 만들어서

so that people don't have to worry what it is on the ground.

사람들이 땅 위에 뭐가 있는지 알아채지 못하도록 하기로 했죠.

So after some experimentation,

몇 차례의 실험 끝에

we decided to use an industrial sensor,

우리는 산업용 센서를 사용하기로 했는데요.

used as a safety trigger in hazardous areas

위험한 곳에서 안전 트리거로 이용되는 센서입니다.

as the sensor,

and a black neoprene rubber sheet

그리고 검은색 합성고무를

as the cover.

그 위에 덮었죠.

Now, another added benefit of using black rubber

검정색 고무가 주는 또 다른 장점은

was that dust naturally accumulates over the surface,

표면에 자연스럽게 먼지가 쌓임에 따라

eventually camouflaging it with the ground.

마치 지표면인 것처럼 위장이 가능하다는 것이었죠.

We also had to make sure that the sensor is no higher than 12 millimeters.

또한 센서의 높이는 12mm 이하여야 했습니다.

Otherwise, people might trip over it,

그렇지 않으면 사람들이 센서에 발이 걸려 넘어지고

which in itself would cause stampedes.

그 자체로 압사사고의 원인이 될 수 있었죠.

We don't want that.

그런 상황은 바라지 않아요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So we were able to design a sensor which was only 10 millimeters thick.

어쨌든 10mm크기의 센서를 만드는데 성공했고

Now the data is sent to the server in real time,

수집된 정보는 실시간으로 서버로 전송되었으며

and a heat map is plotted,

지면 위 활성화된 장치들을

taking into account all the active devices on the ground.

고려해서 열지도를 만들었습니다.

The authorities could be alerted if the crowd movement slowed down

군중의 움직임이 느려지거나 그 밀집도가 한계를 넘어설 경우

or if the crowd density moved beyond a desired threshold.

관계 당국에 경고를 보낼 수 있도록 말이죠.

We installed five of these mats in the Nashik Kumbh Mela 2015,

2015년 나시크 쿰 멜라에서 이런 매트 5장을 설치했고

and counted over half a million people

18시간 동안 50만 명 이상이

in 18 hours,

매트를 밟고 지나갔습니다.

ensuring that the data was available in real time at various checkpoints,

그 결과 다양한 장소에서 실시간으로 정보를 전송하고 군중의 흐름을

ensuring a safe flow of people.

파악하는 것이 가능함이 확인되었습니다.

Now, this system, eventually, with other innovations,

이 시스템은 결국 다른 발명과 마찬가지로

is what helped prevent stampedes altogether at that festival.

축제에서 사람들의 압사사고를 예방하기 위해 만든 것입니다.

The code used by Ashioto during Kumbh Mela

쿰 멜라에서 아시오토가 사용한 코드는

will soon be made publicly available, free to use for anyone.

대중 누구나 무료로 이용할 수 있도록 공개할 예정입니다.

I would be glad if someone used this code

누군가가 아시오토를 이용해서 군중이 더욱

to make many more gatherings safer.

안전하게 이동하도록 만들 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다.

Having succeeded at Kumbh Mela

쿰 멜라에서의 성공으로

has inspired me to help others who may also suffer from stampedes.

저는 다른 곳에서 압사로 죽는 사람들을 도와야겠다고 생각했습니다.

The design of the system makes it adaptable

아시오토는 어떤 축제나 행사에서도

to pretty much any event

활용성이 높습니다.

that involves an organized gathering of people.

많은 사람들이 모이는 곳이라면 말이죠.

And my new dream is to improve, adapt and deploy the system

그리고 제 새로운 꿈은 이 시스템을 더 발전시키고 효율적으로 이용해서

all over the world to prevent loss of life and ensure a safe flow of people,

전 세계에서 모든 이가 안전하게 이동해 목숨을 잃지 않도록 하는 것입니다.

because every human soul is precious,

왜냐하면 콘서트장에서든 스포츠 경기에서든

whether at concerts or sporting events,

알라하바드의 마하 쿰 멜라나

the Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad,

메카 순례나

the Hajj in Mecca,

카발라로 향하는 시아파의 행렬이나

the Shia procession to Karbala

바티칸 시국에서나

or at the Vatican City.

모든 인간의 영혼이 소중하기 때문입니다.
