I was only nine

मी फक्त नऊ वर्षांचा होतो,

when my grandfather first described to me the horrors he witnessed six years earlier

when human stampedes killed 39 people

चेंगराचेंगरीमुळे ३९ मृत्यू झाले होते. हा भयंकर प्रसंग

in our hometown of Nashik, India.

त्यांनी प्रत्यक्ष अनुभवला होता.

It was during the 2003 Nashik Kumbh Mela,

ही घटना २००३ साली नाशिकच्या कुंभमेळ्यात घडली.

one of the world's largest religious gatherings.

कुंभमेळा हा जगातल्या सर्वात मोठ्या धार्मिक मेळाव्यांपैकी एक.

Every 12 years, over 30 million Hindu worshippers

१५ लाख लोक सामावू शकणाऱ्या आमच्या शहरात

descend upon our city --

दर बारा वर्षांनी

which is built only for 1.5 million people --

सुमारे ३० दशलक्ष हिंदू भाविक उतरतात

and stay for 45 days.

आणि ४५ दिवस मुक्काम करतात.

The main purpose is to wash away all their sins

गोदावरीत स्नान करून आपली सर्व पापं धुवून टाकणं

by bathing in the river Godavari.

हा त्यांचा उद्देश असतो.

And stampedes may easily happen

ही प्रचंड मोठी गर्दी संथ गतीने पुढे सरकत असते,

because a high-density crowd moves at a slow pace.

त्यामुळे चेंगराचेंगरी होणं सहज शक्य असतं.

Apart from Nashik, this event happens in three other places in India,

नाशिकप्रमाणेच हा मेळा भारतात आणखी तीन ठिकाणी

with varying frequency,

वेगवेगळ्या वेळी भरतो.

and between 2001 and 2014,

२००१ ते २०१४ या काळात या घटनांमध्ये

over 2,400 lives have been lost in stampedes at these events.

चेंगराचेंगरीमुळे २४०० च्या वर मृत्यू घडून आले आहेत.

What saddened me the most

मला सर्वात जास्त दुःख या गोष्टीचं झालं,

is seeing people around me resigning to the city's fate

की दर कुंभमेळ्याच्या वेळी असे डझनावारी मृत्यू घडतात

in witnessing the seemingly inevitable deaths of dozens

आणि समाज त्यांना अटळ म्हणून, शहराचं दुर्दैव मानून,

at every Kumbh Mela.

केवळ पाहत राहतो.

I sought to change this,

मला वाटलं, हे बदललं पाहिजे.

and I thought, why can't I try to find a solution to this?

आपण यावर उपाय शोधायचा प्रयत्न का करू नये?

Because I knew it is wrong.

कारण मला हे चुकीचं वाटत होतं.

Having learned coding at an early age and being a maker,

लहानपणीच कोडिंग शिकल्यामुळे आणि अंगी उत्पादकवृत्ती असल्यामुळे

I considered the wild idea --

मला एक भन्नाट कल्पना सुचली.

I considered the wild idea of building a system

माझी भन्नाट कल्पना होती, गर्दीच्या लोंढ्यावर नियंत्रण ठेवणारी

that would help regulate the flow of people

एक यंत्रणा तयार करून

and use it in the next Kumbh Mela in 2015,

ती २०१५ सालच्या कुंभमेळ्यात वापरायची.

to have fewer stampedes and, hopefully, fewer deaths.

त्यामुळे चेंगराचेंगरी कमी होऊन, कमी लोक मृत्युमुखी पडतील.

It seemed like a mission impossible,

हे स्वप्न अशक्य कोटीतलं भासत होतं.

a dream too big,

एका १५ वर्षांच्या मुलासाठी

especially for a 15-year-old,

तर हे फारच मोठं स्वप्न होतं.

yet that dream came true in 2015,

पण २०१५ मध्ये ते स्वप्न साकार झालं.

when not only did we succeed

चेंगराचेंगरीचं प्रमाण आणि तीव्रता

in reducing the stampedes and their intensity,

कमी करण्यात आम्हांला यश आलं,

but we marked 2015

इतकंच नव्हे, तर २०१५

as the first Nashik Kumbh Mela to have zero stampedes.

हे नाशिकच्या कुंभमेळ्यातलं चेंगराचेंगरीशिवायचं पहिलंच वर्ष ठरलं.

It was the first time in recorded history

एकही मृत्यू न घडता हा मेळा पार पडण्याची

that this event passed without any casualties.

ही इतिहासातली पहिलीच वेळ होती.

How did we do it?

आम्ही हे कसं घडवून आणलं?

It all started when I joined an innovation workshop

याची सुरुवात २०१४ मध्ये झाली. त्यावेळी एम आय टी मीडिया लॅब च्या

by MIT Media Lab in 2014

नवनिर्माण कार्यशाळेत मी सहभागी झालो होतो.

called the Kumbhathon

कुंभमेळ्याच्या विराट स्वरूपामुळे

that aimed at solving challenges faced at the grand scale of Kumbh Mela.

उभे राहणारे प्रश्न सोडवण्याच्या हेतूने निर्माण झालेली कुंभथॉन कार्यशाळा.

Now, we figured out to solve the stampede problem,

आमच्या लक्षात आलं, की चेंगराचेंगरीचा प्रश्न सोडवण्यासाठी

we wanted to know only three things:

तीन गोष्टी विचारात घ्यायला हव्यात.

the number of people, the location,

लोकांची संख्या, ठिकाण,

and the rate of the flow of people per minute.

आणि गर्दीच्या चालण्याच्या गतीचा मिनिटागणिक दर.

So we started to look for technologies that would help us get these three things.

या तीन गोष्टींसाठी कोणतं तंत्रज्ञान वापरता येईल ते आम्ही शोधू लागलो.

Can we distribute radio-frequency tokens to identify people?

प्रत्येकाला रेडियो फ्रिक्वेन्सी टोकन देऊन त्यांचा माग ठेवता येईल का?

We figured out that it would be too expensive and impractical

पण ३० दशलक्ष टोकन्स वाटणं महागडं आणि अव्यवहारी ठरेल

to distribute 30 million tags.

हे आमच्या लक्षात आलं.

Can you use CCTV cameras with image-processing techniques?

प्रतिमा-प्रक्रिया तंत्रज्ञान असणारे सीसीटीव्ही कॅमेरे वापरता येतील का?

Again, too expensive for that scale,

पुन्हा, तेही प्रचंड संख्येमुळे खर्चिक.

along with the disadvantages of being non-portable

तसंच त्यांची ने-आण करणं कठीण.

and being completely useless in the case of rain,

शिवाय बरेचदा कुंभमेळ्याच्या दिवसांत पाऊस पडतो,

which is a common thing to happen in Kumbh Mela.

त्यावेळी ते कुचकामी ठरतील.

Can we use cell phone tower data?

सेलफोन टॉवर्स चा डेटा वापरता येईल का?

It sounds like the perfect solution,

हे उत्तर अगदी अचूक वाटलं.

but the funny part is,

पण गंमत अशी, की

most of the people do not carry cell phones

कुंभमेळ्यासारख्या ठिकाणी

in events like Kumbh Mela.

लोक सेल फोन्स नेत नाहीत.

Also, the data wouldn't have been granular enough for us.

आणि तो डेटा फारसा तपशीलवार नसल्याने आमच्या उपयोगी पडला नसता.

So we wanted something that was real-time,

तात्काळ आणि सहजपणे

low-cost, sturdy and waterproof,

and it was easy to get the data for processing.

So we built Ashioto,

म्हणून आम्ही अशियोटो तयार केलं.

meaning "footstep" in Japanese,

म्हणजे जपानी भाषेत "पाऊल".

as it consists of a portable mat which has pressure sensors

यात आहे ने-आण करायला सोपी अशी एक मॅट. त्या मॅटमध्ये प्रेशर सेन्सर्स असल्याने

which can count the number of people walking on it,

तिच्यावरून चालत जाणाऱ्यांची संख्या ती मोजते

and sends the data over the internet

आणि तो डेटा पृथक्करणासाठी आम्ही निर्माण केलेल्या

to the advanced data analysis software we created.

The possible errors, like overcounting or double-stepping,

were overcome using design interventions.

The optimum breadth of the mat was determined to be 18 inches,

after we tested many different versions

and observed the average stride length of a person.

Otherwise, people might step over the sensor.

नाहीतर लोक, सेन्सर्सवर पावलं न टाकता ते ओलांडून गेले असते.

We started with a proof of concept built in three days,

तीन दिवसांत आम्ही पुठ्ठा आणि अॅल्युमिनियम फॉईल वापरून

made out of cardboard and aluminum foil.

आमच्या कल्पनेतला नमुना तयार केला.

It worked, for real.

We built another one with aluminum composite panels

and piezoelectric plates,

which are plates that generate a small pulse of electricity under pressure.

We tested this at 30 different pilots in public,

in crowded restaurants, in malls, in temples, etc.,

to see how people reacted.

लोकांची प्रतिक्रिया अजमावली.

And people let us run these pilots

शहरासमोरच्या प्रश्नावर स्थानिक मुलं

because they were excited to see localites work on problems for the city.

काम करताना पाहून लोकांनी उत्साहाने मदत केली.

I was 15 and my team members were in their early 20s.

माझं वय होतं १५ आणि माझ्याबरोबरची मुलं विशीत होती.

When the sensors were colored,

आम्ही रंगीत सेन्सर्स केले होते,

people would get scared and would ask us questions like,

तेव्हा लोक घाबरून विचारायचे,

"Will I get electrocuted if I step on this?"

"याच्यावर पाय ठेवला तर शॉक लागेल का?"

(Laughter)

Or, if it was very obvious that it was an electronic sensor on the ground,

किंवा जमिनीवर सेन्सर दिसत असेल तर

they would just jump over it.

त्याच्यावरुन उडी मारून जायचे.

(Laughter)

So we decided to design a cover for the sensor

जमिनीवर हे काय आहे, अशी लोकांना भीती वाटू नये म्हणून

so that people don't have to worry what it is on the ground.

सेन्सरवर आच्छादन घालायचं आम्ही ठरवलं.

So after some experimentation,

अशा काही प्रयोगांनंतर आम्ही

we decided to use an industrial sensor,

इंडस्ट्रीयल सेन्सर

used as a safety trigger in hazardous areas

आणि आच्छादन म्हणून

as the sensor,

काळं निओप्रीन रबर

and a black neoprene rubber sheet

वापरायचं ठरवलं.

as the cover.

हे सेन्सर धोक्याच्या क्षेत्रात वापरले जातात.

Now, another added benefit of using black rubber

काळं रबर वापरण्याचा

was that dust naturally accumulates over the surface,

आणखी एक फायदा म्हणजे

eventually camouflaging it with the ground.

त्यावर माती साचल्यावर ते जमिनीसारखंच दिसायचं.

We also had to make sure that the sensor is no higher than 12 millimeters.

सेन्सरची जाडी १२ मिमी पेक्षा कमी ठेवण्याची खबरदारी आम्हांला घ्यावी लागली.

Otherwise, people might trip over it,

नाहीतर लोक अडखळून पडले असते, आणि

which in itself would cause stampedes.

त्यामुळे चेंगराचेंगरी सुरु झाली असती.

We don't want that.

तसं नक्कीच व्हायला नको होतं.

(Laughter)

So we were able to design a sensor which was only 10 millimeters thick.

आम्ही १० मिमी जाडीचा सेन्सर तयार केला.

Now the data is sent to the server in real time,

आता डेटा तात्काळ सर्व्हरला पाठवला जातो.

and a heat map is plotted,

आणि एक हीटमॅप काढला जातो.

taking into account all the active devices on the ground.

जमिनीवर कार्यरत असणारे सर्व सेन्सर्स विचारात घेतले जातात.

The authorities could be alerted if the crowd movement slowed down

गर्दीचा वेग कमी झाला किंवा गर्दी एका ठराविक प्रमाणाबाहेर वाढली,

or if the crowd density moved beyond a desired threshold.

We installed five of these mats in the Nashik Kumbh Mela 2015,

and counted over half a million people

ensuring that the data was available in real time at various checkpoints,

Now, this system, eventually, with other innovations,

is what helped prevent stampedes altogether at that festival.

The code used by Ashioto during Kumbh Mela

will soon be made publicly available, free to use for anyone.

खुला करण्यात येणार आहे.

I would be glad if someone used this code

हा कोड वापरून कोणी असेच इतर मोठे मेळावे

to make many more gatherings safer.

सुरक्षित करू शकलं, तर मला फार आनंद होईल.

Having succeeded at Kumbh Mela

कुंभमेळ्यातल्या या यशाने

has inspired me to help others who may also suffer from stampedes.

मला इतर ठिकाणची चेंगराचेंगरी थांबवण्यासाठी प्रेरणा दिली आहे.

The design of the system makes it adaptable

या प्रणालीची रचना अशी आहे,

to pretty much any event

की ती कोणत्याही नियोजित मेळाव्यासाठी

that involves an organized gathering of people.

अनुरूप करून वापरता येईल.

And my new dream is to improve, adapt and deploy the system

आता माझं पुढचं स्वप्न आहे, या प्रणालीत आणखी सुधारणा करून, जास्त अनुकूलन आणून

all over the world to prevent loss of life and ensure a safe flow of people,

गर्दीचा प्रवाह सुरक्षित करून मनुष्यहानी वाचवण्यासाठी ती जगात सर्वत्र वापरायची.

because every human soul is precious,

कारण, प्रत्येक मानवी जीव हा मौल्यवान आहे.

whether at concerts or sporting events,

गाण्याच्या मैफिली, खेळांचे सामने,

the Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad,

अलाहाबादचा महाकुंभमेळा,

the Hajj in Mecca,

मक्केची हज यात्रा,

the Shia procession to Karbala

करबालाची शिया यात्रा

or at the Vatican City.

किंवा व्हॅटिकन सिटी, कुठेही.
