We live in a world increasingly tyrannized by the screen,

where, using this most powerful tool that we have,

we can transform both our physical surroundings,

My company, Artichoke, which I cofounded in 2006,

2006年に共同で設立した Artichoke（アーティチョーク）は

was set up to create moments.

We all have moments in our lives, and when we're on our deathbeds,

誰の人生にも大切な一瞬があります

臨終まぎわに 38番のバスで通った 毎日の通勤のことや

we're not going to remember the daily commute to work

on the number 38 bus

or our struggle to find a parking space every day when we go to the shop.

駐車場所に困った 日々の買い物のことを 思い出す人はいません

We're going to remember those moments when our kid took their first step

思い出すのは 我が子の初めの一歩や

or when we got picked for the football team

サッカーチームの選手に選ばれた時や

or when we fell in love.

恋のときめきを感じた時のこと

So Artichoke exists to create moving, ephemeral moments

that transform the physical world using the imagination of the artist

to show us what is possible.

We create beauty amongst ruins.

We reexamine our history.

We create moments to which everyone is invited,

It all started for me way back in the 1990s,

私にとって 全ては 遡ること1990年代に始まりました

when I was appointed as festival director in the tiny British city of Salisbury.

ソールズベリーというイギリスの小さな町で フェスティバルの総指揮を任されたのです

You'll probably have heard of it.

多分 聞いたことがあるでしょう

Here's the Salisbury Cathedral, and here's the nearby Stonehenge Monument,

これがソールズベリー大聖堂

which is world-famous.

Salisbury is a city that's been dominated for hundreds of years by the Church,

ソールズベリーの町は 何百年にもわたって

the Conservative Party

and the army.

It's a place where people really love to observe the rules.

So picture me on my first year in the city,

cycling the wrong way down a one-way street, late.

I'm always late.

It's a wonder I've even turned up today.

A little old lady on the sidewalk helpfully shouted at me,

"My dear, you're going the wrong way!"

Charmingly -- I thought -- I said, "Yeah, I know."

「ええ 解ってます」と 愛想よく返事したつもりでしたが

"I hope you die!" she screamed.

「死んでしまえ！」と 怒鳴られました

(Laughter)

And I realized that this was a place where I was in trouble.

私のような者は ここでは大変だろうなと悟りました

And yet, a year later,

それにもかかわらず その１年後には

persuasion, negotiation -- everything I could deploy --

説得や交渉や 可能なあらゆる手段を駆使して

saw me producing the work.

Not a classical concert in a church or a poetry reading,

but the work of a French street theater company

who were telling the story of Faust,

"Mephistomania," on stilts, complete with handheld pyrotechnics.

The day after, the same little old lady stopped me in the street and said,

上演の翌日 例のかわいいお婆さんが 道端で私を呼び止め

"Were you responsible for last night?"

「昨夜のイベントはあなたが責任者？」と 聞いてきました

I backed away.

(Laughter)

"Yes."

"When I heard about it," she said, "I knew it wasn't for me.

But Helen, my dear, it was."

So what had happened?

何が起きたのでしょう

Curiosity had triumphed over suspicion,

好奇心が不審の念に打ち勝ち

and delight had banished anxiety.

楽しさが不安を払拭したのです

So I wondered how one could transfer these ideas to a larger stage

それで 私はこのアイデアを どうすれば更に大きな舞台に移せるかと考え

and started on a journey to do the same kind of thing to London.

ロンドンで同じようなことを再現するための 長い道のりが始まりました

Imagine: it's a world city.

考えて下さい― ロンドンは国際都市です

Like all our cities, it's dedicated to toil, trade and traffic.

全ての都市と同様に 都市機能は 労働、商業、交通に特化しています

It's a machine to get you to work on time and back,

人を正確に仕事場に届け また帰宅させる装置です

and we're all complicit in wanting the routines to be fixed

私たちも皆 お決まりの手順の 安定を望み

and for everybody to be able to know what's going to happen next.

誰もが次に何が起こるかを 知っておきたいと望む点で共犯です

And yet, what if this amazing city could be turned into a stage,

しかしながらこの素晴らしい都市を 舞台に変貌させ

a platform for something so unimaginable

そこで あまりにも 想像を絶するために

that would somehow transform people's lives?

人々の生活を変えてしまうほどの 何かが生まれたらどうなるでしょう

We do these things often in Britain.

英国では こんなことをよくやります

I'm sure you do them wherever you're from.

皆さんの国でもきっとやるでしょう

Here's Horse Guards Parade.

これは騎兵交代です

And here's something that we do often. It's always about winning things.

こんなこともよくやります どの場合でも勝利のお祝いです

It's about the marathon or winning a war

それはマラソンの勝者や 戦争での勝利を祝い

or a triumphant cricket team coming home.

優勝したクリケットチームの 凱旋を祝います

We close the streets. Everybody claps.

道路は閉鎖され みんなが拍手します

But for theater? Not possible.

でも 舞台のために閉鎖できるか？ 無理です

Except a story told by a French company:

それを変えたのは フランスのある劇団の作品です

a saga about a little girl and a giant elephant

小さな女の子と その子のもとを

that came to visit

４日間訪れる

for four days.

巨大な象の話です

And all I had to do was persuade the public authorities

私はただ この舞台のために 街を４日間閉鎖するのは

that shutting the city for four days was something completely normal.

全く自然なことだと 公共機関の幹部たちを 説得するだけでよかったのです

(Laughter)

No traffic, just people enjoying themselves,

交通は遮断され 人々だけが楽しみながら

coming out to marvel and witness this extraordinary artistic endeavor

フランスの劇団 「ロワイヤル・デ・ルックス」による

素晴らしい芸術の試みに驚嘆し 体験するために街中に出てきました

by the French theater company Royal de Luxe.

It was a seven-year journey,

ここまでくるのに ７年の歳月を費やしました

with me saying to a group of men -- almost always men -- sitting in a room,

"Eh, it's like a fairy story with a little girl and this giant elephant,

and they come to town for four days

and everybody gets to come and watch and play."

And they would go,

こう聞かれます

"Why would we do this?

Is it for something?

何か目的があるのか？

Is it celebrating a presidential visit?

大統領の訪問の記念？

Is it the Entente Cordiale between France and England?

フランスとイギリスの友好関係の印か？

Is it for charity? Are you trying to raise money?"

チャリティーのためか？ 資金を集めるためなのか？」

And I'd say,

私は答えます

"None of these things."

「いいえ それ全て違います」

And they'd say, "Why would we do this?"

では「なぜ それをするのか？」 と言うのです

But after four years, this magic trick, this extraordinary thing happened.

ところが４年経った頃 こんなマジックで 素晴らしいことが起こりました

I was sitting in the same meeting I'd been to for four years,

私は 同じ会合に４年間ずっと通い続け

saying, "Please, please, may I?"

「どうかお願いします」と 言ってきました

Instead of which, I didn't say, "Please."

ところがその時はお願いではなく こう言いました

I said, "This thing that we've been talking about for such a long time,

it's happening on these dates,

この日程で実施しますので

and I really need you to help me."

皆さんのご協力が必要です」

This magic thing happened.

するとマジックが 決まりました

Everybody in the room somehow decided that somebody else had said yes.

その場にいた人はそれぞれ 他の誰かが許可したと判断したんです

(Laughter)

They decided that they were not being asked to take responsibility,

責任を押し付けられたわけではないと 判断しました

or maybe the bus planning manager was being asked to take responsibility

つまり バスの運行責任者は

バスを迂回させることだけを任され

for planning the bus diversions,

and the council officer was being asked to close the roads,

市役所の役人は 道路を閉鎖することだけを頼まれ

and the transport for London people were being asked to sort out the Underground.

ロンドン交通局は 地下鉄の運行管理を頼まれたのです

All these people were only being asked to do the thing that they could do

それぞれが依頼された中身は 自分の権限で可能なことで

that would help us.

それが私たちの役に立ちました

Nobody was being asked to take responsibility.

誰一人として責任を負えと 頼まれたのではありません

And I, in my innocence, thought, "Well, I'll take responsibility,"

「ええ 私が責任を負うわ」と 私は無邪気に考えていました

for what turned out to be a million people on the street.

その結果 100万人が 街に繰り出しました

It was our first show.

It was our first show, and it changed the nature of the appreciation of culture,

not in a gallery, not in a theater, not in an opera house,

but live and on the streets,

transforming public space for the broadest possible audience,

people who would never buy a ticket to see anything.

So there we were.

We'd finished, and we've continued to produce work of this kind.

この作品を終えてからも この種の作品を制作し続けています

As you can see, the company's work is astonishing,

ご覧のように この劇団の作品には 度肝を抜かれます

but what's also astonishing is the fact that permission was granted.

さらに度肝を抜かれたのは 許可を得られたことです

And you don't see any security.

なんと警備の姿は一切ありません

And this was nine months after terrible terrorist bombings

ロンドンをズタズタにした爆弾テロ事件から

that had ripped London apart.

９ヶ月しか経っていないのにです

So I began to wonder whether it was possible

そこで私はこのような企画を さらに複雑な状況の中で

to do this kind of stuff in even more complicated circumstances.

実施できないかと考えはじめました

We turned our attention to Northern Ireland,

私たちは 北アイルランド 見方によってはアイルランド北部ですが―

the North of Ireland, depending on your point of view.

そこに注目しました

This is a map of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland,

この地図が表しているのは イングランド、スコットランド、ウェールズ

the island to the left.

アイルランドは左側の島です

For generations, it's been a place of conflict,

何世代にも渡って 紛争の場となっています

the largely Catholic republic in the south

主にカトリック系が住む南の共和国と

and the largely Protestant loyalist community --

主にプロテスタント系の 王党派（残留派）の住む地域

hundreds of years of conflict,

何百年と続く争いです

British troops on the streets for over 30 years.

英国の軍隊が30年以上も 市街地を警備しています

And now, although there is a peace process,

いまでは和平交渉も進んでいますが

this is today in this city, called Londonderry if you're a loyalist,

これは残留派なら ロンドンデリーと呼び

called Derry if you're a Catholic.

But everybody calls it home.

And I began to wonder

whether there was a way in which the community tribalism could be addressed

through art and the imagination.

This is what the communities do,

every summer, each community.

This is a bonfire filled with effigies and insignia

敵対する側を象徴する人形や シンボルなど

from the people that they hate on the other side.

ヘイトの対象を 山のように集めたものです

This is the same from the loyalist community.

これは残留派の 同じような焚き火です

And every summer, they burn them.

このように毎夏燃やされます

They're right in the center of town.

町のど真ん中で行われます

So we turned to here, to the Nevada desert, to Burning Man,

そこで私たちはネバダ州の砂漠で行われる 「バーニングマン」に注目しました

where people also do bonfires,

ここでも同じように焚き火をしますが

but with a completely different set of values.

全く違う価値観によるものです

Here you see the work of David Best and his extraordinary temples,

これは デビッド・ベストの比類なき作品 『テンプル』です

which are built during the Burning Man event

「バーニングマン」の期間中に 作り上げられ

and then incinerated on the Sunday.

最後の日曜日に燃やされます

So we invited him and his community to come,

そこで私たちは彼と彼の仲間を招待し

and we recruited from both sides of the political and religious divide:

政治と宗教における分断の両陣営から 参加者を募りました

young people, unemployed people,

若者や失業者など

people who would never normally come across each other

or speak to each other.

And out of their extraordinary work rose a temple

そんな人々のとんでもない力で 『テンプル』が建てられました

to rival the two cathedrals that exist in the town,

その姿は この町に存在する ２つの大聖堂にも引けを取りません

one Catholic and one Protestant.

プロテスタント そしてカトリックの大聖堂です

But this was a temple to no religion,

しかしこの寺院は 宗教に関係なく

for everyone,

あらゆる人のものです

for no community, but for everyone.

特定のコミュニティーのためではなく あらゆる人のものです

And we put it in this place where everyone told me nobody would come.

これを建てた場所には 誰も行かないだろうと言われていました

It was too dangerous. It sat between two communities.

２つのコミュニティーの中間にあり 危険すぎるからです

I just kept saying, "But it's got such a great view."

私はこう言い続けました 「でも ここからの景色は最高よ」

And again, that same old question:

Why wouldn't we do this?

What you see in the picture

is the beginning of 426 primary school children

426人の小学生のグループの先頭です

who were walked up the hill by the head teacher,

校長先生に連れられて 丘を登ってきました

who didn't want them to lose this opportunity.

校長先生は子供達に この機会を逃してほしくなかったのです

And just as happens in the Nevada desert,

すると ネバダ砂漠と同じように

though in slightly different temperatures,

温度の差は若干はあるにせよ

the people of this community, 65,000 of them,

このコミュニティーの人々 ６万５千人もの人が

turned out to write their grief, their pain, their hope,

自分たちの悲しみや痛みや希望や

their hopes for the future,

将来への希望や愛情を

their love.

書き出してくれました

Because in the end, this is only about love.

結局 全ては ただ愛のためなのです

They live in a post-conflict society:

彼らは 紛争で傷ついた社会に 暮らしています

lots of post-traumatic stress,

心的外傷後ストレスを抱えた人も多く

high suicide.

自殺率も高いです

And yet, for this brief moment --

それでも この一瞬の間は―

and it would be ridiculous to assume that it was more than that --

それ以上の何かを期待するのは ばかげているでしょうから

somebody like Kevin -- a Catholic whose father was shot when he was nine,

例えば ケヴィンは カトリック系で ９歳の時に

２階のベッドルームで 寝ていた父親が撃たれました

upstairs in bed --

Kevin came to work as a volunteer.

ケヴィンはボランティアでした

And he was the first person to embrace the elderly Protestant lady

who came through the door on the day we opened the temple to the public.

最初に抱きしめたのは彼でした

It rose up. It sat there for five days.

And then we chose -- from our little tiny band of nonsectarian builders,

who had given us their lives for this period of months

to make this extraordinary thing --

we chose from them the people who would incinerate it.

And here you see the moment when,

witnessed by 15,000 people who turned out on a dark, cold, March evening,

the moment when they decided to put their enmity behind them,

to inhabit this shared space,

共有する この場所に 一緒に立った瞬間です

where everybody had an opportunity to say the things that had been unsayable,

ここは 誰もが口にできなかったことを 言う機会となりました

to say out loud,

はっきりと口にするのです

"You hurt me and my family, but I forgive you."

「あなたは 私と私の家族を傷つけた でもあなたを許します」

And together, they watched

そして人々は一緒に 各々のコミュニティーのメンバーが

as members of their community let go of this thing that was so beautiful,

この美しいものを手放すのを 見届けました

but was as hard to let go of

それは この作品の制作に注ぎ込まれた

as those thoughts and feelings

ずっと抱え込んでいた考えや感情を 手放すことと同じくらいに

that had gone into making it.
