We live in a world increasingly tyrannized by the screen,

I want to take you to a different kind of world,

the world of the imagination,

where, using this most powerful tool that we have,

we can transform both our physical surroundings,

but in doing so, we can change forever how we feel

and how we feel about the people that we share the planet with.

My company, Artichoke, which I cofounded in 2006,

was set up to create moments.

We all have moments in our lives, and when we're on our deathbeds,

삶에는 중요한 순간들이 있습니다.

임종을 앞두고

출근길에 탔던 38번 버스를 떠올릴 사람은 아무도 없죠.

we're not going to remember the daily commute to work

on the number 38 bus

or our struggle to find a parking space every day when we go to the shop.

주차공간을 찾아 헤매던 기억도 떠오르지 않을 거예요.

We're going to remember those moments when our kid took their first step

자녀들이 첫걸음을 떼던 그 순간과

or when we got picked for the football team

축구팀에 선발되던 기억,

or when we fell in love.

사랑에 빠졌던 순간을 떠올리겠죠.

So Artichoke exists to create moving, ephemeral moments

아티초크는 감동의 순간들, 그 찰나의 시간을 만들고자 합니다.

that transform the physical world using the imagination of the artist

to show us what is possible.

We create beauty amongst ruins.

We reexamine our history.

역사를 재평가하기도 하지요.

We create moments to which everyone is invited,

either to witness or to take part.

It all started for me way back in the 1990s,

모든 시작은 1990년대로 거슬러 올라갑니다.

when I was appointed as festival director in the tiny British city of Salisbury.

저는 영국 소도시 솔즈베리의 축제감독에 임명되었습니다.

You'll probably have heard of it.

여러분도 들어보셨을 도시일 겁니다.

Here's the Salisbury Cathedral, and here's the nearby Stonehenge Monument,

솔즈베리 대성당이 있고 근방에는 스톤헨지가 있습니다.

which is world-famous.

세계적으로도 유명한 곳입니다.

Salisbury is a city that's been dominated for hundreds of years by the Church,

솔즈베리는 수백 년 동안 교회,

영국보수당,

the Conservative Party

and the army.

군대가 지배했던 도시입니다.

It's a place where people really love to observe the rules.

그곳 사람들은 규율을 지키는 것을 정말 좋아합니다.

So picture me on my first year in the city,

그 도시에 정착한 첫해였을 겁니다.

cycling the wrong way down a one-way street, late.

일방통행에서 역주행하여 자전거를 타고 있었습니다.

I'm always late.

It's a wonder I've even turned up today.

이 자리에 이렇게 나타난 것도 신기할 지경이지요.

(Laughter)

A little old lady on the sidewalk helpfully shouted at me,

인도에 계시던 자그마한 노부인이 저를 도와주려고 소리쳤죠.

"My dear, you're going the wrong way!"

“저기요! 지금 역주행하고 있어요!”

Charmingly -- I thought -- I said, "Yeah, I know."

나름 매력적인 투로 "네, 저도 알아요."라고 대답했죠.

"I hope you die!" she screamed.

그분은 "죽길바래!"라고 소리쳤습니다.

(Laughter)

And I realized that this was a place where I was in trouble.

저와는 맞지 않는 장소임을 깨달았어요.

And yet, a year later,

하지만 1년 후

persuasion, negotiation -- everything I could deploy --

모든 수단을 동원해 설득과 협상을 한 결과,

saw me producing the work.

마침내 일이 진척되었습니다.

Not a classical concert in a church or a poetry reading,

교회에서 하는 클래식 콘서트도 시 낭독회도 아닌

but the work of a French street theater company

프랑스 길거리 공연단의 퍼포먼스였습니다.

who were telling the story of Faust,

파우스트 이야기인 "메피스토마니아"를

"Mephistomania," on stilts, complete with handheld pyrotechnics.

죽마를 탄 채 손잡이 폭죽을 터트리며 완성했습니다.

The day after, the same little old lady stopped me in the street and said,

축제 다음 날, 그때 그 노부인이 저를 불러세워 물었습니다.

"Were you responsible for last night?"

“당신이 지난밤 공연의 책임자였나요?”

I backed away.

저는 뒷걸음질 쳤지요.

(Laughter)

"Yes."

“네.”

"When I heard about it," she said, "I knew it wasn't for me.

“공연한다고 들었을 때 제 스타일은 아니라고 생각했어요.

But Helen, my dear, it was."

그런데 말이죠, 헬렌, 마음에 들었어요."

So what had happened?

과연 무슨 일이 있었을까요?

Curiosity had triumphed over suspicion,

호기심이 의심을 이겼고

and delight had banished anxiety.

기쁨은 불안을 해소했습니다.

So I wondered how one could transfer these ideas to a larger stage

저는 이 아이디어를 더 큰 무대로 옮겨보고 싶어졌고

and started on a journey to do the same kind of thing to London.

런던에서 이 공연을 하겠다는 일념으로 긴 여정을 시작했습니다.

Imagine: it's a world city.

상상해봅시다. 런던은 세계적인 도시입니다.

Like all our cities, it's dedicated to toil, trade and traffic.

다른 대도시와 마찬가지로

사람들은 바쁘게 일하고 거래가 오고가며 교통이 복잡하죠.

It's a machine to get you to work on time and back,

기계를 타고 일터에 가서 돌아오지요.

and we're all complicit in wanting the routines to be fixed

우리는 모두 어느정도 루틴화된 일상을 원하고

and for everybody to be able to know what's going to happen next.

다음에 벌어질 일을 미리 알고 싶어 하죠.

And yet, what if this amazing city could be turned into a stage,

하지만 이 놀라운 도시가 무대가 되고,

a platform for something so unimaginable

상상할 수 없었던 광경이 펼쳐지는 플랫폼이 되어서

that would somehow transform people's lives?

사람들의 삶을 바꿀 수 있다면 어떨까요?

We do these things often in Britain.

영국에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 행사가 있습니다.

I'm sure you do them wherever you're from.

출신이 어디든 모두가 보셨을텐데요.

Here's Horse Guards Parade.

근위병 행렬입니다.

And here's something that we do often. It's always about winning things.

종종 열리는 행사죠. 항상 승리를 축하합니다.

It's about the marathon or winning a war

마라톤을 열거나 승전을 기념하고

or a triumphant cricket team coming home.

큰 승리를 거둔 크리켓팀의 귀국을 축하합니다.

We close the streets. Everybody claps.

길을 통제하고 모든 사람이 박수를 보냅니다.

But for theater? Not possible.

그렇다면 연극은 어떨까요? 불가능하죠.

Except a story told by a French company:

프랑스 극단이 들려주는 이야기라면 예외죠.

a saga about a little girl and a giant elephant

이 무용담은 작은 소녀와 거대 코끼리가

that came to visit

나흘 동안

for four days.

도시를 방문한다는 이야기입니다.

And all I had to do was persuade the public authorities

우리는 공공기관 관계자들을 설득시켜

that shutting the city for four days was something completely normal.

4일간 교통을 통제하는 것이 지극히 정상이라고 믿게 해야했죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

No traffic, just people enjoying themselves,

차 없는 거리에서 마음껏 즐기며

coming out to marvel and witness this extraordinary artistic endeavor

프랑스 로열 드 뤽스 극단의 놀라운 예술적 시도를

by the French theater company Royal de Luxe.

지켜보며 감탄하면 된다고 말했죠.

It was a seven-year journey,

7년이 걸렸습니다.

with me saying to a group of men -- almost always men -- sitting in a room,

회의실에 앉아 거의 매번 남성 간부들에게 말했어요.

"Eh, it's like a fairy story with a little girl and this giant elephant,

"작은 소녀와 거대 코끼리가

and they come to town for four days

나흘 동안 동네를 찾아오는 동화 같은 이야기입니다.

and everybody gets to come and watch and play."

모든 사람이 함께 공연을 보고 즐기면 됩니다."

And they would go,

그러면 이런 질문이 날아왔죠.

"Why would we do this?

"그런데 이 공연을 왜 해야 하죠?

Is it for something?

어떤 의미가 있나요?

Is it celebrating a presidential visit?

국빈 방문 기념인가요?

Is it the Entente Cordiale between France and England?

영·불 협상(Entente Cordiale) 체결을 축하하는 건가요?

Is it for charity? Are you trying to raise money?"

자선 행사인가요? 기금 마련이 목적입니까?"

And I'd say,

그러면 제가 말합니다.

"None of these things."

“그런 것들이 아닙니다.”

And they'd say, "Why would we do this?"

그러면 그들이 묻습니다. "그럼 이 공연을 왜 해야 하나요?"

But after four years, this magic trick, this extraordinary thing happened.

하지만 4년 후 마법처럼 대단한 일이 일어났습니다.

I was sitting in the same meeting I'd been to for four years,

지난 4년 동안 똑같은 회의실에서 말해왔습니다.

saying, "Please, please, may I?"

"부탁이에요, 해도 될까요?'

Instead of which, I didn't say, "Please."

이번에는 "부탁이에요"를 붙이지 않고 말했습니다.

I said, "This thing that we've been talking about for such a long time,

"이미 오랫동안 논의해온 사항입니다.

it's happening on these dates,

요즘에는 이 공연을 실제로 하는 분위기죠.

and I really need you to help me."

이번에는 저를 꼭 도와주세요."

This magic thing happened.

그리고 마법이 일어났습니다.

Everybody in the room somehow decided that somebody else had said yes.

다들 누군가 먼저 승낙해주길 바라는 눈치였습니다.

(Laughter)

(Applause)

They decided that they were not being asked to take responsibility,

관계자들은 이 행사에 대해 책임을 지지 않기로 선을 그었죠.

or maybe the bus planning manager was being asked to take responsibility

버스 기획부장은 버스 경로의 변경에 관하여

for planning the bus diversions,

책임을 지기로 했고

and the council officer was being asked to close the roads,

시의회 공무원은 도로를 폐쇄하고

and the transport for London people were being asked to sort out the Underground.

런던 교통공사는 지하철 문제를 해결하기로 했죠.

All these people were only being asked to do the thing that they could do

관계자들은 우리가 행사를 진행할 수 있도록

that would help us.

지원하는 역할을 맡았습니다.

Nobody was being asked to take responsibility.

하지만 총책임자는 없었습니다.

And I, in my innocence, thought, "Well, I'll take responsibility,"

순진하게도 제가 선뜻 나섰습니다. “제가 책임지겠습니다.”

for what turned out to be a million people on the street.

길거리로 나온 백만 명의 인파를요.

It was our first show.

그것이 우리의 첫 쇼였습니다.

It was our first show, and it changed the nature of the appreciation of culture,

첫 공연은 문화 감상의 본질을 바꾸었습니다.

not in a gallery, not in a theater, not in an opera house,

갤러리, 극장, 오페라 하우스를 벗어나

but live and on the streets,

생생하게 거리에서

transforming public space for the broadest possible audience,

기존의 공공장소를 변모시켜 최대한 많은 관객과 만날 수 있게 되었고,

people who would never buy a ticket to see anything.

표를 살 필요도 없어졌죠.

So there we were.

그 현장에 우리가 있었습니다.

We'd finished, and we've continued to produce work of this kind.

공연을 마친 후, 멈추지 않고 작업을 했습니다.

As you can see, the company's work is astonishing,

보시다시피, 극단의 공연도 경이로웠지만

but what's also astonishing is the fact that permission was granted.

공연 허가가 결정 났다는 사실도 무척 감동이었습니다.

And you don't see any security.

보안요원도 전혀 보이지 않지요.

And this was nine months after terrible terrorist bombings

당시는 런던은 산산조각냈던 폭탄테러가 발생한 지

that had ripped London apart.

9개월이 흐른 후였습니다.

So I began to wonder whether it was possible

저는 훨씬 더 복잡미묘한 환경에서도

to do this kind of stuff in even more complicated circumstances.

이런 퍼포먼스가 가능한지 궁금해졌죠.

We turned our attention to Northern Ireland,

그렇게 북아일랜드에 관심을 두게 되었습니다.

the North of Ireland, depending on your point of view.

관점에 따라서 아일랜드의 북부라고도 부를 수도 있습니다.

This is a map of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland,

이것은 잉글랜드, 스코틀랜드, 웨일스, 아일랜드의 지도입니다.

the island to the left.

왼쪽의 이 섬은

For generations, it's been a place of conflict,

세대를 걸쳐 분쟁이 끊이지 않았던 지역으로

the largely Catholic republic in the south

남부의 가톨릭 공화당과

and the largely Protestant loyalist community --

신교도 로열리스트들이

hundreds of years of conflict,

수백 년 동안 분쟁을 거듭했습니다.

British troops on the streets for over 30 years.

영국군이 30년 넘게 거리에 주둔하였습니다.

And now, although there is a peace process,

this is today in this city, called Londonderry if you're a loyalist,

called Derry if you're a Catholic.

But everybody calls it home.

And I began to wonder

whether there was a way in which the community tribalism could be addressed

through art and the imagination.

This is what the communities do,

각각의 지역사회에서

every summer, each community.

여름마다 하는 행사가 있는데요,

This is a bonfire filled with effigies and insignia

그들이 증오하는 반대진영에서

from the people that they hate on the other side.

모형과 휘장을 모아 모닥불을 피우는 것입니다.

This is the same from the loyalist community.

왕당파 집단에서도 똑같은 의식을 합니다.

And every summer, they burn them.

매년 여름이면, 그들은 모닥불을 피웁니다.

They're right in the center of town.

시내 한 중심에서요.

So we turned to here, to the Nevada desert, to Burning Man,

우리는 네바다주 사막에서 열리는 버닝맨 주목했습니다.

where people also do bonfires,

거기서도 모닥불 행사가 열리지만

but with a completely different set of values.

추구하는 가치는 완전히 다릅니다.

Here you see the work of David Best and his extraordinary temples,

which are built during the Burning Man event

and then incinerated on the Sunday.

So we invited him and his community to come,

and we recruited from both sides of the political and religious divide:

young people, unemployed people,

people who would never normally come across each other

or speak to each other.

And out of their extraordinary work rose a temple

to rival the two cathedrals that exist in the town,

one Catholic and one Protestant.

사원을 배치했습니다.

But this was a temple to no religion,

이 사원에는 어떤 종교도 없습니다.

for everyone,

모두를 향해 열려있죠.

for no community, but for everyone.

특정 공동체가 아닌 모두를 위한 공간입니다.

And we put it in this place where everyone told me nobody would come.

시내에 사원을 세우자 모두 아무도 안 올 거라고 했죠.

It was too dangerous. It sat between two communities.

위험천만한 일이었습니다. 두 지역사회 가운데 자리잡았으니까요.

I just kept saying, "But it's got such a great view."

그래도 저는 말했죠. "그래도 전망이 멋지잖아요."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And again, that same old question:

그렇다면, 다시 이 질문이 등장합니다.

Why wouldn't we do this?

왜 이 공연을 해야할까요?

What you see in the picture

이 사진의 아이들은

is the beginning of 426 primary school children

교장 선생님의 지도로 언덕을 올라온

who were walked up the hill by the head teacher,

426명의 초등학생입니다.

who didn't want them to lose this opportunity.

교장 선생님은 학생들이 이 기회를 놓치지 않길 바랐죠.

And just as happens in the Nevada desert,

네바다 사막에서와 마찬가지로

though in slightly different temperatures,

미세한 온도 차는 존재하지만

the people of this community, 65,000 of them,

65,000명의 지역 주민들이

turned out to write their grief, their pain, their hope,

슬픔, 고통, 희망,

미래에 대한 소망과 사랑을 적었습니다.

their hopes for the future,

their love.

결국, 이 모든 것은 모두 사랑으로 귀결됩니다.

Because in the end, this is only about love.

They live in a post-conflict society:

그들은 분쟁 후 시대를 살고 있습니다.

lots of post-traumatic stress,

여러가지 외상후 스트레스를 겪고

high suicide.

And yet, for this brief moment --

하지만 이 짧은 순간만큼은,

and it would be ridiculous to assume that it was more than that --

somebody like Kevin -- a Catholic whose father was shot when he was nine,

케빈은 가톨릭으로 9살 때 그의 아버지는 위층 침대에서

upstairs in bed --

총을 맞았습니다.

Kevin came to work as a volunteer.

케빈이 자원봉사자로 왔습니다.

And he was the first person to embrace the elderly Protestant lady

who came through the door on the day we opened the temple to the public.

신교도 노부인을 포옹해준 첫 사람이었습니다.

It rose up. It sat there for five days.

우리는 사원을 세워 5일간 유지했습니다.

And then we chose -- from our little tiny band of nonsectarian builders,

그 후, 몇 달간 자신의 시간을 할애하여

who had given us their lives for this period of months

to make this extraordinary thing --

we chose from them the people who would incinerate it.

And here you see the moment when,

witnessed by 15,000 people who turned out on a dark, cold, March evening,

the moment when they decided to put their enmity behind them,

to inhabit this shared space,

모두가 공존하는 공간으로 모였던 순간입니다.

where everybody had an opportunity to say the things that had been unsayable,

이 기회를 통해 사람들은 그간 차마 말할 수 없었던 것을

터놓고 이야기할 수 있었습니다.

to say out loud,

"You hurt me and my family, but I forgive you."

“당신은 나와 내 가족에게 상처를 줬습니다.

그러나 나는 당신을 용서합니다.”

And together, they watched

모두 함께,

떨쳐내기 힘든 감정을 내려놓는 아름다운 모습을 지켜봅니다.

as members of their community let go of this thing that was so beautiful,

but was as hard to let go of

사원을 만들어가는 과정에서

as those thoughts and feelings

떠올랐던 생각과 감정들로

that had gone into making it.

떨쳐버리기 더 어려웠을 번뇌를 함께 내려놓았습니다.
