When I’m out at the grocery store or maybe a restaurant

or the park with my son -- he’s six and a half --

people will stop us and mention that they think that he’s handsome.

I agree.

They'll use that opportunity to chop it up with him,

and often when they're done talking with him,

When those people walk away, the thought that comes to my mind

This thought comes to my mind

because I’ve written two books about race and racism in the United States,

and this kind of work can produce feelings of pessimism.

One of the things that I’ve learned

is that Americans have an orientation toward progress.

In this context,

what that means is that we often celebrate the distance between where we were

The other thing I’ve learned about Americans

is that we have a very, very narrow understanding of racism,

mostly in the minds and hearts of people,

usually old people --

old people from the South.

And this really narrow definition can constrain our opportunities

to produce a more racially egalitarian society.

We like to hunt for races

and distance ourselves from people who say mean things about whole groups of people

or who idealize the 1950s.

और वो जो १९५० में अभी भी अटके हुए है

But the fact of the matter is that we might just need to look in the mirror.

Now, I'm not saying that everyone here is a racist,

but what I am saying is that everyone here has the capacity

and perhaps even the propensity

to live their life in a way,

to make decisions,

to rely on biases

Some people say, “Well, you do all this work about racism. What’s the answer?”

And I say that the first thing we might need to do

और कहती हु की पहली चीज़ जो हमे करनी चाहिए

is to come to a shared understanding

about what racism is in the first place.

History shows that racists have had the upper hand

in deciding who the racists are and what racism is,

ये तय करने के लिए की कौन नस्लवादी है और नस्लवाद क्या है,

and it’s never them or the things that they do.

न तो कभी वे थे न तो जो चीज़े उन्होंने की वह थी।

But maybe if we come together

लेकिन शायद अगर हम सब साथ हो जाए

and come to a shared and perhaps a precise definition of what racism is,

we can work toward creating a society

where mothers like me aren’t in constant fear of their children’s lives.

I'd like to dispel three myths about racism

on our trek toward mutual understanding.

First:

it’s true that the South has done its work to earn its reputation

यह सच हैं की दक्षिण ने सबसे नस्लवाद जगह कहलाने की

as the most racist region.

But there are other states and regions that are competing for the title.

लेकिन कई जगह ओर है जो इस शीर्षक को पाने के लिए लड़ रहे है।

For example,

if we look at the most segregated states in terms of where Black kids go to school,

we'll see, sure, some are in the South.

There are some out west,

in the Midwest

and in the Northeast.

They're where we live.

Or if we look at states with the biggest racial disparities

in terms of prison populations,

we see that none of them are in the South.

They're where we live.

My colleague Rebecca Kreitzer and I

looked at a standard battery of racial attitudes of prejudice,

and we found that in the 1990s,

states in the South dominated the most racially negative attitudes.

But this geography has evolved, and things have changed.

By 2016, we found that the Dakotas, Nebraska,

Most of the inequalities that we see in our day-to-day lives

happen at the state and local level.

What that means is that we don't have to go all the way to Congress

इसका मतलब ये नही है की समाज में बदलाव लाने के लिए

to make change in our communities.

हमे शुरुआत कांग्रेस के करनी पड़े

We can simply hold our city, our county, our state legislators to task

हमे बस अपने शहर, अपने देश को राज्य विधायको को सौप देना है

to produce more equitable outcomes.

ताकि ज्यादा न्यायपूर्वक परिणाम ला सके।

Myth two:

मिथक दो :

we're not that good at hunting for racists.

हम नस्लवादी को मारने मे उतने अच्छे नही है

Remember that time when the governor of Virginia did blackface,

वो वक्त जब वर्जीनिया केे राज्यपाल ने अपना चेहरा काला रंगवाया था,

and people were like, "Oh, that's bad. I need to get that racist out of here"?

लोग ऐसे थे कि, क्या, यह तो बुरा हुआ। उस नस्लवाद को यहा से निकालने की ज़रूरत है?

I was giving y'all the side-eye, and here's why.

मैं सब को तिरछी नज़र दे रही थी, मगर क्यूं? वह कहती हु।

While people were going back to yearbooks

जब लोग फरसे अपनी सालाना किताब में

to look for things that were obviously racist,

कुछ चीज़े जो नस्लवादी है उसे ढूंढने,

fewer people were looking into the current-day policy stances

बहुत कम लोग आज की विधायको के द्वारा पॉलिसी को देख रहे थे

of legislators who probably did blackface but didn't get caught.

जिन्होंने काला रंग तो करवाया था लेकिन पकड़े नही गए।

So, how many of us might have supported a candidate

आखिर हम लोगो मैसे कितनो ने उनको सहारा दिया होता

who is willing to let neighborhoods secede from their district

so that kids could go to all-white schools --

ताकि उनके बच्चे भी गोरे लोग के साथ स्कूल जा सके

in the 21st century?

और ये सब २१मि सदी में?

Or how many of us might have supported a ballot measure

या फिर हम मैसे किसने चुनाव के लिए मतपत्र अपनाया

that systematically reduced some groups' chances of voting?

जिसने कुछ से मत देने का मोका छीन लियाा?

Or how many of us might have focused on the behavior of Black mothers

या हम मैसे कितनो ने अपना ध्यान काली माताओं के व्यवहार पर लगाया होगा

rather than doctors or health care systems and policies

बजाय डॉक्टर या स्वास्थ्य देखभाल व्यवस्था

when we learn about the huge racial disparities

हम कब बड़े पैमाने पर आखिर माता एवं शिशु मृत्यु दर

in maternal and infant mortality?

पर हो रहे नस्लीय भेदभाव को सीखेंगे?

It doesn't have to be like this.

इसे ऐसे नही होना चाहिए।

We could do something different.

हम कुछ अलग कर सकते है।

We could scrutinize the behaviors of the rule makers.

हम नियम बनानेवालो के बर्ताव की जांच कर सकते थे।

We could orient ourselves toward a more just society,

हम खुद को एक न्यायपूर्वक समाज की और ले जा सकते थे,

and on our way there,

और उस रास्ते पर,

we can't mystify practical policy solutions.

हमे व्यवहारिक समाधान को रहस्यमय नही बनाना चाहिए।

Myth three:

मिथक तीन :

If you believe that when all the grandmas in Mississippi die

अगर आप मानते है की मिसिसिपी में नस्लवादी विचार वाले बूआओ के मरने के साथ

that racism is going to go with them,

नस्लवाद चला जायेगा,

you are in for a big disappointment.

तो आप एक बड़ी निराशा का सामना करने वाले है

We like to think that young people

ये सोचना हमे अच्छा लगता है की

are going to do the hard work of eradicating racism,

युवा लोग नस्लवाद को जड़ से मिटाने के लिए खूब मेहनत करने वाले है

but there are some things that we should note.

लेकिन कुछ चीज़ जो हमे मद्दे नज़र करनी चाहिए :

We know that young folks, young white folks especially, like diversity,

हम जानते है वो युवा लोग, गोरे लोग खास कर वे विविधता को पसंद करते है

they appreciate it, they're looking for it.

उसेे मनाते है, उसी की खोज में होते है।

But we also know that they don't live diverse lives.

लेकिन हमे ये भी पता है की उन्हे विविध जीवन नही जीना होता है।

Research shows that the average white American literally has one black friend.

विष्लेषण दिखाता है की औसत प्रतिशत गोरे अमरीकी का एक ही काला मित्र होता है।

And what that means is that most don't have any at all.

और इसका मतलब है की ज्यादातर के तो होते ही नही है।

Sociologists like Sarah Mayorga show that even when well-meaning white folks

सराह मयोर्गा–एक समाजशास्त्री बताते है की भले ही गोरे लोग विविधता वाले

move to diverse neighborhoods,

अड़ोस पड़ोस में रहने जाए,

they don't necessarily have positive interactions,

ज़रूरी नही की उनकी बातचीत सकारात्मक रहे,

no less any with their neighbors who aren't white.

उन पड़ोसी से तो नही जो काले है।

My research with Professor Christopher DeSante shows

क्रिस्टोफर डिसेंट के साथ की हुई मेरी अन्वेषण दिखाती है

that when we ask white millennials their racial attitudes

की जब हम गोरेे सहस्त्राब्दी लोग से नस्लवादी रवैए के बारे में या

and policy preferences,

पॉलिसी अधिमान के लिए पूछते है,

that they're sometimes, just as in other times,

तब पता चलता है की कई बार या हर बार,

even more racially conservative than boomers.

हमे नस्लीय रूढ़िवादियों से भी ज्यादा रूढ़ी लोग मिलते है।

When we ask them about the things that are important to them,

जब हम उन चीज़ों के बारे मैं पूछते है जो उनके लिए महत्व रखती है,

they don't have any particular sense of urgency

तब पता चलता है की उन्हे नस्लीय भेदभाव के प्रश्न के बारे में

around questions of racial inequality.

कोई जल्दी नही है।

How did we get like this?

हम आखिर कब ऐसे हो गए?

Well, one of the things we might think about is how we raise our kids

एक चीज़ जो हमे सीखनी चाहिए वो है की बच्चे को केसे संस्कार दे

and equip them to solve the problems that we want them to solve.

और उन्हे केसे तैयार करे की वो उनकी परेशानी को खुद हल कर लेे।

Research shows that white parents in particular

अन्वेषण दिखाता है की गोरे माता–पिता अपने बच्चे से नस्लीय भेदभाव के बारे में या तो

will either choose to not talk about issues of racism to their kids

बात ही नही करना चाहेंगे ताकि उनके बच्चे

in order to protect them from a harsh racial reality

इस कड़वी वास्तविकता से बचे रहे

or they instill colorblind lessons,

या फिर वे अंध सिक्षाए देगे,

and that can actually reinforce negative racial attitudes.

जो नस्लियावाद के नकारात्मक रवैए को बढ़ावा देे।

So it's kind of like

तो ये कुछ ऐसा है की

how some of your parents might have given you books about puberty

जैसे कितनो के माता पिता ने यौनारंभ के बारे मैं किताब दी होगी

so they didn't have to talk about the birds and the bees,

ताकि उन्हें पक्षी–मधुमखियो के बारे में बात न करनी पड़े,

and then you tried to connect all the dots and then you did it all wrong.

और फ़िर वो सारे जोड़ मिलाना, लेकिन फिर क्या? आप कुछ गलत ही समझते है।

It's like that.

ये बिलकुल वैसा ही है।

It doesn't have to be like this.

इसे ऐसे नही होना चाहिए।

We can do better.

हम बेहतर कर सकते है।

We can have hard conversations with our kids

हम अपने बच्चों के साथ कड़ी चीज़ के बारे मेंं बात कर सकते है

so that they don't grow up like many of us did,

ताकि वे उस तरह से बड़े न हो जिस तरह हम हुए

thinking that talking about racism makes you a racist -- it doesn't --

ये सोचना की नस्लवाद के बारे में बात करने से आप नस्लवादी कहलाओगेे–

and so that we can prevent them from making the same mistakes

यही तो है वो गलती जो हमने भूतकाल में की

that we've seen in the past.

लेकिन अब नही दोहराएंगे।

Remember a long, long time ago in 2008,

याद है, कई साल पहले २००८ में,

when we were all pining to live in a post-racial world?

जब हम नस्लवाद के बाद की दुनिया में जीने के लिए तरस रहे थे?

Well, I say that it's time for us to think bigger and dream bigger

वैसे अभी वो वक्त है जहा हमे बड़ा और बेहतर सोचना है

and think about what it would be like to live in a post-racist world.

और सोचो, बिना नस्लवाद की दुनिया में जीना कैसा लगेगा।

But in order to do that, we'd have to come together

लेकिन उस मुकाम तक पहुंचने के लिए, हम सबको साथ आना होगा

to have a shared definition of racism --

नस्लवाद की एक साझा परिभाषा बनाने के लिए–

not just in the matter of hearts and minds,

सिर्फ दिमागी या दिली मामले में नही,

but in systems, policies, rules,

पर कायदे में, कानून में, पॉलिसी में,

decisions made over and over again to marginalize some people --

और हर बार फैसले में ख़ारिज़ किए गए लोग में।

and agree to become anti-racists -- people who learn more and do better.

और नस्लवाद विरोधी बनने के लिए सहमत होना जो ज्यादा अच्छा सीखते भी है और करते भी है।

So we could ask harder questions of candidates

ताकि हम उम्मीदवार से नस्लीय भेदभाव के बारे में

about their stances on racial inequality

मुश्किल सवाल कर सके

before we throw our full weight behind them.

उससे पहले की हम उन पर कीचड़ उछले।

We could buycott or boycott businesses

हम उन व्यापार को खरीद सकते है या बहिष्कार कर सकते है

whose practices don't align with our values.

जिनकी प्रथाएं हमारे मूल्यों से मेल न करेे।

We could talk to our kids about racism.

हम अपने बच्चो से नस्लवाद के बारे में बात कर सकते है।

We could figure out our state's special brand of racism

हमे अपने राज्य का अलग ब्रांड के नस्लवाद का पता लगाना है

and work to eradicate it.

और इसे मिटाने के लिए काम करना है

People made racial disparities, and people can unmake them.

लोग ही नस्लीय भेदभाव बनाते है और लोग ही इसे मिटा सकते है।

And sure, it'll be hard,

और ज़रूर, ये मुश्किल रहेगा,

but the fact of the matter is,

लेकिन सचाय तो ये है की,

someone is depending on us to do nothing at all.
