I'm a journalist.

And I know how frustrating it gets

I felt it when I worked as a local reporter

in my hometown Belgaum, in India.

I thought maybe joining a national newspaper would help.

لە ماوەی پێنج ساڵەی ڕاهێنانمدا، بەهۆی چیرۆکەکان گەشتم دەکرد.

So I went through professional training

سەرەتای ساڵی ٢٠١٢ بوو

and worked with India's three national newspapers.

من لە مومبایەوە بۆ گوندێکی کەنار دەریا لە باشووری هیندستان هەزار میل گەشتم کرد.

During my five-year stint, I used to travel for my stories.

من لەوێ بووم بۆ ئەوەی چیرۆکێک بنووسم

سەبارەت بە مەترسی ژینگەیی لە وێستگەیەکی کارەبای ئەتۆمی.

It was in early 2012

I traveled 1,000 miles from Mumbai to a coastal village in south India.

I was there to do a story

on environmental risk of a nuclear power plant.

When I spoke to a local activist,

he said the story of hundreds of villagers protesting against a nuclear power plant

was reported by local media

six months before national TV channels picked it up.

تێگەیشتنەکەی منی پشتڕاست کردەوە کە پەیامنێرێکی ناوخۆیی زۆر پێشتر

چیرۆکەکان دەزانێت پێش ئەوەی میدیای نیشتمانییەوە باسی بکات.

I had similar experiences when I traveled for other stories.

بەڵام وەک من ئەوانیش سەکۆیەک بۆ باس کردنی نەبوو.

It confirmed my belief that a local reporter knows a story

بەپێی توێژینەوەیەکی میدیایی لە ساڵی ٢٠١١دا،

much before it is picked up by national media.

تەنها لەسەدا دووی روماڵی سەرەکی میدیایی هیندستان

But like me, they did not have a platform to share them.

باس لە پرسی گوندنشینەکان دەکات.

According to a 2011 media study,

هەرچەندە نزیکەی لەسەدا ٧٠ی دانیشتوانی هیندستان پێکدەهێنن،

only two percent of India's mainstream media coverage

1.3 ملیار دانیشتووانی هیندستان لە گوندەکاندا دەژین.

is about rural issues.

Even though almost 70 percent of India's population,

ئەمە بۆ وڵاتێکی دیموکراسی وڵاتێکی وەک هیندستان ناڕەحەتە،

کە شەفافیەت کلیلی دڵنیابوونی دادپەروەرە بۆ هەمووان بە تایبەت هەژاران.

1.3 billion population, live in villages.

This is disturbing for a democratic country like India,

where transparency is key to ensure justice to everyone, especially the poor.

بۆیە وازم لە کارەکەم لەگەل ‘ئیکینیمیک تایمس’ لە مانگی کانوونی دووەمی ٢٠١٤دا هێنا.

I was convinced that there's a need to build a platform

بۆ ماوەی شەش مانگی داهاتوو سەربەخۆ ئیشم دەکرد و

to bring out this important story at the national level.

هەروەها بنکەیەکی زانیاری٢٠ هەزار پەیامنێری ناوخۆیی لە سەرانسەری هیندستان دروست کرد.

So I quit my job with "Economic Times" in December 2014.

For the next six months, I freelanced

لەو ماوەیەدا،

and also built a database of 20,000 local reporters across India.

During that time,

I saw editors who were looking for more and more contributors

as news organizations cut down cost

by getting rid of hundreds of full-time reporters.

و ئێمەش ڕێک ئەوە دەکەین.

I saw an opportunity to highlight these important stories

سەکۆ تەکنەلۆژیەکەی ئێمە، بۆ یەکەمجار، پەیامنێرە ناوخۆییەکان دەدۆزێتەوە،

if I can train these local reporters

ڕێکیان دەخات،

and connect them with the mainstream media.

و یارمەتیان دەدات بۆ نووسین بۆ بڵاوکراوە نیشتمانی و نێودەوڵەتییەکان.

And that is exactly what we are doing.

Our tech platform, for the first time, discovers a local reporter,

تیمێکی سەرنوسەری بە ئەزموون لە نزیکەوە لەگەڵ ئەم پەیامنێرە ناوخۆییانە کاردەکات

grooms them,

لەسەر هەر چیرۆکێک کە لەلایەن ئەوانەوە نێردراوە.

and helps them write for national and international publications.

ئەم پرۆسەیە نەک تەنها یارمەتی پەیامنێرەکان دەدات تا فێری لێهتووی ڕاپۆرتنووسین بن

A team of experienced editors works closely with these local reporters

on each and every story filed by them.

بەڵکو متمانە بە چیرۆکەکانیان دەبەخشێت.

This process not only helps the local reporters learn reporting skills

لە مانگی حوزەیرانی ٢٠١٧،

یەکێک لە پەیامنێرە ناوخۆییەکانمان، ساوراب شارما،

خەڵاتێکی نێودەوڵەتی لە کۆمیسیۆنی ئەوروپاوە بەدەستهێنا

but also gives credibility to their stories.

بۆ چیرۆکەکەی سەبارەت بەو نارەحەتیانەی ڕووبەڕووی کچانی گەنج کە لەسەر شەقام دەژین دەبێتەوە.

In June 2017,

one of our local reporters, Saurabh Sharma,

هەروەها هەوڵدەدەین بازاڕ بۆ ئەم پەیامنێرە ناوخۆییانە گەرم بکەینەوە،

won an international award from the European Commission

بە پێدانی سێ هێندە زیاتریان لەچاو ڕێژەکانی ئێستا.

for his story on the hardships faced by young girls living on the street.

مووچە و دانپێدانانی چاکتر متمانەیان پێدەبەخشێت

We're also trying to correct market for these local reporters,

بۆ ئەوەی باشتر کار بکەن و گەندەڵی لە سیستەم و کۆمەڵگادا ئاشکرا بکەن.

by paying them three times more than the existing rates.

لەم دواییانەدا چیرۆکێکمان لە باکووری ڕۆژهەڵاتی هیندستانەوە بڵاوکردەوە

Better pay and recognition is giving them confidence

کە منداڵان دەبێت لەناو مەنجەڵێکی زەبەلاحی چێشت لێناندا لە ڕووبارێک بپەڕنەوە،

to dig deeper and expose corruption in the system and society.

ڕۆژانە ژیانی خۆیان بخەنە مەترسییەوە،

We recently reported a story from Northeast India

چونکە پردێک نییە، بەلەمێک نییە.

where children have to cross a river in a huge cooking pot,

میدیایی باو چیرۆکەکەی باس کرد

و سەرنجی نوێنەری هەڵبژێردراوی ناوچەکەی ڕاکێشا

risking their life every day,

because there's no bridge, there's no boat.

The story was picked up by mainstream media

and it caught the attention of a local elected representative

ئێمە زیاتر لە ٢٥٠٠ چیرۆکی لەو جۆرەمان بڵاوکردۆتەوە.

who promised to build a bridge.

بڵئوکردنەوەیان بە مەبەستی گەیشتن و کاریگەرییەکی فراوانتر،

In the last three years of our operations,

ئێمە لەگەڵ ١٦ دەزگایی میدیایی پێشەنگ هاوبەشیمان کردووە،

we have reported more than 2,500 such stories.

کە بە کارکردن لەگەڵیان دڵخۆشن،

لەهەمان کاتدا، تێچووی ئەوان دادەبەزێنێت، چونکە پەیامنێران بەڕێوە نابەن و راپۆرتەکان دەستکاری ناکەن.

To publish them for a wider reach and impact,

we have partnered with 16 leading media houses,

who are happy to take them,

as it brings their cost down, by not editing or managing reporters.

Today, we have more than 1,200 reporters in our network,

لە شوێنەکانەوە کە یان پشتگوێ دەخرێن لەلایەن میدیای باوەوە

covering stories like the nuclear power plant,

from places that are either ignored by mainstream media

or never covered.

In the next five years,

we plan to have one reporter in each of the 5,500 subdistricts in India,

covering the entire nation,

to ensure that none of these important stories go unnoticed.

Next time you see a story from the countryside,

please do not ignore it.
