LOOK SEE WATCH Learn English Vocabulary with ESTHER

We will be going over the three verbs  that I mentioned. Look, see, and watch.  

제가 언급한 세 가지 동사를 살펴보겠습니다. 보고, 보고, 지켜보세요.

And as I mentioned, these verbs are a  little bit confusing because they are

similar and that's why we thought we  want to teach you this today.

OK. Let's go ahead and begin.

Let's start with the verb, look.

So when we look at something, we direct our eyes toward it.

We move our eyes toward something, and we pay attention to it.

우리는 무언가를 향해 눈을 움직이고 그것에 주의를 기울입니다.

OK, so for example, look at this or look at this.

OK. How about. Look at this. I want you to  look at it I want you to direct your eyes,

move your eyes toward it, and pay attention to it.

OK. All right. Well, I'm sorry. My cat is very noisy today.

OK, let's do a few more. OK. Look at this marker.

So that's what we do when we look at something

All right. So now let's look at some common uses and examples of 'look'.

OK. So first, look at this example sentence.

I will read it for you. Look at that rainbow.

OK. I am asking you to direct your eyes toward that rainbow.

And I want you to pay attention to it.

Now, you'll notice that I used the verb look with the preposition act.

OK. We can use several different prepositions with look,

but we usually use look at

OK, let's look at another example sentence.

Look at my clothes.

내 옷 좀 봐.

I am directing your eyes towards something.

나는 당신의 눈을 무언가로 향하고 있습니다.

I want you to look and focus and pay attention to my clothes. Aren't they nice?

내 옷을 보고 집중하고 관심을 가져줬으면 좋겠다. 멋지지 않나요?

Right. OK, And let's try another example sentence.

오른쪽. 좋아요, 그리고 또 다른 예문을 시도해 보겠습니다.

Ah, you'll notice here the verb look is used in the present continuous, looking.

아, 여기서 동사 모양이 현재진행형인 looking에서 사용된다는 것을 알 수 있을 것입니다.

And look at the preposition. We're not using 'at' this time. We're using 'for'.

그리고 전치사를 보세요. 이번에는 'at'을 사용하지 않습니다. 우리는 'for'를 사용하고 있습니다.

I'm looking for my car key. When we use 'look' and 'for' together,

나는 내 차 열쇠를 찾고 있어요. 'look'과 'for'를 함께 사용하면

it becomes a verb that is more like search, to search.

검색하다, 검색하다에 가까운 동사가 됩니다.

So when I say I'm looking for my car key,

그래서 내가 차 열쇠를 찾고 있다고 말하면,

it's like saying, "I'm searching for my car key".

"내 차 열쇠를 찾고 있어요"라고 말하는 것과 같습니다.

I lost my car key. I can't find it. So I'm looking for it.

I'm paying attention and trying to find it.

But with your eyes, you were able to notice.

You didn't expect it, but you noticed it with your eyes.

Today you might have seen only a few times,

오늘은 몇번만 보셨겠지만

but you didn't know only my cat was going to come into the video, right?

영상에 저희 고양이만 나올 줄은 몰랐죠?

But you saw him. OK.

하지만 당신은 그를 봤죠. 좋아요.

Also see can be used to talk about meeting someone or kind of.

또한 see는 누군가 또는 어떤 종류의 만남에 대해 이야기하는 데 사용될 수 있습니다.

Yes. Seeing some visiting someone.

예. 어떤 사람을 방문하는 것을 봅니다.

OK, so you might say today I will see my friend, Mary.

좋아, 그럼 오늘은 내 친구 Mary를 만나러 갈 거라고 말할 수도 있겠네요.

OK. That's another way to use 'see'.

좋아요. 그것은 '보다'를 사용하는 또 다른 방법입니다.

Now let's look at some more example sentences

OK, I see a spider.

All right. So I didn't know that there was a spider in my room.

OK, and I don't like spiders. I'm scared. I didn't know it was there.

It was unexpected. OK. But I saw it. My eyes saw the spider.

All right, let's move on to another example.

Remember earlier I lost my car key. Right?

So I was looking for it. I was searching for it.

OK. But maybe you saw it.

You didn't know it was lost. You didn't  expect to see it.

But maybe with your eyes, you saw it somewhere.

OK. And another example. I saw my student cheating on my test.

But maybe out of the corner of my eye,

I saw my student looking at some notes or copying something.

I didn't notice at first. I didn't know. I didn't expect it. And then I saw it.

And you'll see here that the verb 'see' is used in the past tense.

So I used saw. OK. So, am I going too fast?

now we move on to the verb 'watch'.

OK. When we watch something,

we are paying attention to something  with our eyes.

우리는 눈으로 무언가에 주의를 기울이고 있습니다.

But for a longer time, OK. We're watching something happening.

하지만 더 오랫동안은 괜찮습니다. 우리는 무슨 일이 일어나는지 지켜보고 있습니다.

Usually there is some kind of action going on.

일반적으로 어떤 종류의 조치가 진행되고 있습니다.

OK. And we're watching the action happening for a little bit of a longer time

We're seeing some action happen. So we use watch. OK. All right.

So here's an example sentence. Let's watch TV.

We don't just, you know, look at the TV for a second and turn away.

Usually not. We sit and we watch things happening on the TV.

And that's why we use the verb watch.

Let's look at another example. Sometimes I love to watch the sunset.

OK. Usually it takes a few minutes for the sun to set right for the sun to go down.

So we're watching the action happening. We watch the action happening.

We don't just look, we don't want to look at the sun directly

because that would be bad for our eyes.

But we watch the sun gradually go  down.

OK. So in this example, we say, watch the sunset.

Here's an example where we use the past tense of watch.

다음은 watch의 과거형을 사용하는 예입니다.

They watched the football match. Again, they watched the football match.

A football match has a lot of action happening,

축구 경기에는 많은 액션이 일어나고

and it goes on for a long period of time.

So we use the verb watch.

They watched the football match.

They're paying attention with their eyes for a period of time.

Now you might see a sentence that looks like this. Let's go forward.

I watched a movie last night and I saw a movie last night.

어젯밤에 영화를 봤는데 어젯밤에도 영화를 봤어요.

You might say, hey, what's the difference?

How do I know when to use this one? How do I know when to use that one?

이것을 언제 사용해야 하는지 어떻게 알 수 있나요? 그 것을 언제 사용해야 하는지 어떻게 알 수 있나요?

Well, watch and see can actually be used.

음, watch and see는 실제로 사용될 수 있습니다.

You know, you can use one or the other it's both correct.

둘 중 하나를 사용할 수 있습니다. 둘 다 맞습니다.

When you're talking about watching a TV show,

TV 쇼,

a movie, a concert or another type of show, even a game, right?

영화, 콘서트 또는 다른 유형의 쇼, 심지어 게임을 보는 것에 대해 이야기하고 있는 거죠, 그렇죠?

Like a football game. Like we talked about a football match.

So for again, TV show, movie, another type of show, like a sports game, maybe a play,

Those are all types of shows you can watch. I mean, you can watch

and you can see the grammar rules for that one.

The English rules for the watch versus  see

시계와 참조에 대한 영국의 규칙은

are not so strict when it comes to those things.

So you can use either one and they will be correct.

So let's look at the example again.

I watched a movie last night.

I saw a movie last night.

Both of those work.

All right. So here's the first example.

Can you guys think about why did A, use the verb 'see'?

Well, A, use the verb 'see' because usually you don't know if there will be a rainbow.

Right. You don't expect a rainbow.

It's usually kind of a surprise, right?

Remember when we just don't expect it.

But you notice something with your eyes with your vision, you use the verb, see?

So, again, A might point and say, look over there to see the rainbow.

To use your eyes and perceive the rainbow.

OK, let's go ahead to another practice.

Practice number two, A says, did you see the game?

Did you see the game? And remember a  game usually on TV or something like that.

It's it's something that you can say see or watch.

보거나 본다고 말할 수 있는 것입니다.

Right. So you could say, did you see the game or did you watch the game?

오른쪽. 그러면 게임을 보셨나요, 아니면 게임을 보셨나요?라고 말할 수 있습니다.

Both are OK. And B says, yes, I watched it last night.

둘 다 괜찮습니다. 그러자 B는 '네, 어젯밤에 봤어요'라고 말했습니다.

I watched it last night. You used the A, B, used the past tense here.

어젯밤에 봤어요. 여기서는 A, B를 사용했고 과거형을 사용했습니다.

But again, you can see that any of those either of those are OK.

그러나 다시 한 번 말씀드리지만, 둘 중 어느 것이든 괜찮다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

Did you see the game? Did you watch the game?

Yes, I watched it last night. Or. Yes, I saw  it last night.

Either one of those are OK.

둘 중 하나라도 괜찮습니다.

Practice question number three or practice example number three.

A, says, Did you look for your car key?

A는 자동차 열쇠를 찾았나요?

Did you look for your car key?

자동차 열쇠를 찾으셨나요?

OK, so remember when we say 'look' and then the preposition 'for'

좋아요, 그럼 우리가 'look'이라고 말한 다음 전치사 'for'를

it's like saying search for, right?

말하는 것이 search for를 말하는 것과 같다는 것을 기억하세요, 그렇죠?

You lost your car key. Did you search for it? Did you look for it?

B says yes, but I couldn't see anything in the dark.
