In this video, I’m going to talk about two similar and sometimes confusing English words

Although ‘quite’ and ‘quiet’ are spelled and pronounced differently,

Let’s start with ‘quite’.

Listen carefully to how I say it.

It's an adverb.

এটি একটি ক্রিয়াবিশেষণ।

it means to a large degree or completely.

এর অর্থ একটি বড় ডিগ্রী বা সম্পূর্ণরূপে।

It can also mean truly or considerably.

এটি সত্যিকার অর্থে বা যথেষ্ট অর্থও হতে পারে।

Let’s look at some examples.

The first sentence says,

প্রথম বাক্যটি বলে,

‘We've had quite a lot of rain this year.’

The word ‘quite’ emphasizes that there was a lot of rain.

'বেশ' শব্দটি জোর দিয়ে বোঝায় যে প্রচুর বৃষ্টি হয়েছিল।

The next sentence says,

‘I hadn't seen Rebecca in quite a while.’

Again, ‘quite a while’ emphasizes that it's been a really long time.

I hadn't seen Rebecca for a very long time.

Now, I will talk about the word ‘quiet’.

Listen carefully to how I say it.

It is usually an adjective.

It means there is very little or no sound.

Let's take a look at some examples.

The first sentence says,

‘She spoke in a quiet voice.’

This means that her voice was very little - I almost couldn't hear it.

The next sentence says,

‘It's so quiet without the kids here.’

When the kids are not here, it's quiet.

Now, let's do a checkup.

In the sentence below, we need to fill in the blanks with ‘quiet’ or ‘quite’.

Take a moment to think about where these words belong.

এই শব্দগুলি কোথায় রয়েছে তা নিয়ে ভাবতে একটু সময় নিন।

The first part of the sentence says,

বাক্যের প্রথম অংশে বলা হয়েছে, 'সে _blank_ বুদ্ধিমান।'

‘He's _blank_ intelligent.’

I want to use the word that shows that he's very intelligent,

আমি সেই শব্দটি ব্যবহার করতে চাই যা দেখায় যে তিনি খুব বুদ্ধিমান,

emphasizing how intelligent this person is.

জোর দিয়ে এই ব্যক্তি কতটা বুদ্ধিমান।

So which word do I use?

তাহলে আমি কোন শব্দ ব্যবহার করব?

I use ‘quite’.

আমি 'বেশ' ব্যবহার করি।

‘He's quite intelligent.’

'সে বেশ বুদ্ধিমান।'

The second part of the sentence says,

বাক্যের দ্বিতীয় অংশে বলা হয়েছে,

‘but he is a very _blank_ child.’

'কিন্তু সে খুবই _খালি_ শিশু।'

We need an adjective to describe this child.

এই শিশুটিকে বর্ণনা করার জন্য আমাদের একটি বিশেষণ প্রয়োজন।

‘quiet’ is the right word to use.

'শান্ত' ব্যবহার করার জন্য সঠিক শব্দ।

So we should say,

তাই আমাদের বলা উচিত,

‘He's quite intelligent, but he is a very quiet child.’

'সে বেশ বুদ্ধিমান, কিন্তু সে খুব শান্ত শিশু।'

Now you know the difference between ‘quite’ and ‘quiet’.

এখন আপনি 'বেশ' এবং 'শান্ত' এর মধ্যে পার্থক্য জানেন।

They can be confusing especially in writing

but now you know how to use them well.
