5 Tips to Improve Listening Comprehension - American English

In this American English pronunciation video, we're going to go over five tips

In this video, I'm going to go over five tips, five tricks, five secrets to improve

your English listening comprehension skills.

If you pay attention to all five and spend time every day, not long! 15 - 20 minutes.

إن انتبهتم للخمس نصائح و أمضيتم بعض الوقت يومياً ,ليس وقتاً طويلاً ,15 حتي 20 دقيقة

There's no way you won't improve dramatically. If you get bored working one way,

بلا شك ستتقدمون بشكل كبير.إن اصابكم الملل من العمل بطريقة

try out one of the other five tricks.

فجربوا أي خدعة من الخدع الأخري

Studying pronunciation and listening skills go hand in hand.

إن دراسة مهارة الاستماع و النطق تكتسبان معاً

The more you understand how Americans speak, and how to imitate that, the better you'll be

كلما فهمت كيفية تحدث الأجانب,و كيفية تقليدهم ,كلما أصبحت جيداً

at speaking and understanding conversational English which can move at a pretty quick pace.

في تحدث و فهم الانجليزية , و الذي من الممكن حدوثه سريعاً

So the first trick to improving your listening skills is to study reductions.

حسناُ,أول خدعة لتحسين مهارة الاستماع هي دراسة التخفيفات و التصغيرات

How is it that Americans speak so quickly? They reduce less important words.

كيف يتحدث الأجانب بهذه السرعة؟ انهم يقومون بحذف الكلمات الأقل أهمية.

Let’s take for example this word: FOR. Fully pronounced, it’s FOR. But most of the time,

علي سبيل المثال: كلمة (لكي) إذا تم نطقها كاملة فهي FOR

in a sentence, Americans pronounce it ‘fer’. Really fast, with a reduced vowel, fer.

و لكن معظم الوقت يتم نطقها في الجملة FER بسرعة مع حذف الحرف المتحرك i

So if you’re expecting to hear FOR, fully pronounced and clear,

لذا إن كنت تتوقع سماع FOR و نطقها كاملة و واضحة

then you’re never going to hear ‘fer’. This is for the meeting on Monday.

إذاً فلن تسمع ابداً FER . this is for (fer)the meeting on monday

I’m going to be late for class. Fer, fer.

I'm going to be late for(fer)class

There are quite a few very common words that, just like this, Americans regularly reduce.

هناك العديد من الكلمات التي ينطقها الاجانب مثل نطقهم لكلمة FOR

Knowing what they are, studying them, practicing them, will help you

معرفة تلك الكلمات و دراستها حتماً سيفيدكم

identify them in a fast speaking of native English speakers.

تعرف علي تلك الكلمات اثناء تحدث الأجانب السريع

The second trick to improving your listening skills is to study how Americans link words together.

الخدعة الثانية لتحسين مهارة الاستماع هي معرفة كيفية ربط الكلمات التي يقوم بها الأجانب

American English is very smooth.

اللغة الانجليزية الامريكية لغة عذبة (سرعة عادية)

American English is very smooth.

(سرعة بطيئة)

Linking words together is another way that Americans are able to speak so quickly but still be clear.

ربط الكلمات طريقة يستخدمها الأجانب للتحدث أسرع

When you study linking and the ways Americans link words and sounds,

عندما تدرس تلك الطريقة

it makes it easier to understand native speakers.

سيصبح من السهل فهمك للمتحدثين المحليين

There are specific cases and rules. For example, when you’re linking a word that ends in the EE vowel,

هناك حالات محددة و قواعد.علي سبيل المثال,عندما تربط كلمة تنتهي بحرف متحرك E,

a very common ending sound in American English,

"و هو صوت نهاية معتاد في الانجليزي الاميريكي"

to a word that begins with a vowel,

بكلمة تبدأ بحرف متحرك

it helps to put a Y sound in between the words.

سيساعدك وضع حرف Y بينهما

Americans do this without thinking about it.

الأجانب يقومون بذلك بدون تفكير

“He always”. Heeeeeyal-ya-ya-yyalways.

It sounds like ‘yalways’. He yalways. He always.

The Y is a glide consonant, so we can use it to smoothly glide between words.

حرف y هو حرف ساكن متزحلق,لذا من السهل وضعه بين الكلمات

Studying this will make Americans easier to understand, and make your English more beautifully American.

The third trick to improving your listening skills is to study the specifics of native speech.

ثالث خدعة لتحسين مهارة الاستماع هي دراسة تفاصيل الحديث المحلي

Great. Everyone wants to do that. HOW do you do that?

رائع..الجميع يود فعل ذلك و لكن كيف؟

I’ve come up with an exercise to study native speech that I call a ‘Ben Franklin’ exercise.

لقد توصلت إلي تمرين أطلق عليه (ben franklin exercise)

In these videos, I take a small segment of natural, conversational, native speech,

في هذه الفيديوهات ,أوضح فقرة صغيرة من حديث محلي طبيعي

and analyze every bit of it.

و أقوم بتحليله بالتفاصيل

We look at intonation, stress, words that reduce, linking.

نلاحظ النعمة و النبرة و الحروف التي يتم ربطها أو تخفيفها

Let's look at a quick example.

لنلقي نظرة علي مثال سريع

Tom what did you do today?

ماذا فعلت اليوم يا توم ؟

Lots of interesting things happening here. I noticed first of all that I've dropped the tea here.

نلاحظ عدم نطق حرف T

Whaddid, whaddid...

What did you do? I'm also noticing I'm getting more of a J sound here.

نلاحظ ايضاُ نطق حرف ال J

Ju, ju, what didju, didju...

So the D and the Y here are combining to make the J sound so we have

يجتمع حرف D و حرف Y ليعطيا صوت ال J

Wha - di - ju... Whadidju, whadidju, whadidju.

Tom what did you do today?

Today? Today. Today, I woke up...

اليوم؟ اليوم. اليوم,استيقظت.....

Trick number four: Find a short audio or video clip of a native speaker that has a transcript.

الخدعة الرابعة: أبحث عن فيديو له ترجمة لحديث محلي.

I’ll give you ideas of where to find these at the end of the video.

سأعطيكم أمثلة لهذه الفيديوهات في نهاية هذا الفيديو

Before you look at the transcript, listen or watch, and try to write down the transcript.

قبل ان تقرأ الترجمة, عليك الاستماع و محاولة كتابة ما قيل

Keep it short, 10 or 20 seconds of video or audio.

ليكن الفيديو قصيراً 10 أو 20 ثانية أو ليكن تسجيل صوتي

Listen several times and do your best to write down exactly what’s being said.

استمع عدة مرات و حاول جاهداً كتابة ما قيل بالضبط

Then compare it with the transcript.

ثم قارن ما قمت بكتابته مع الترجمة

What are the words and phrases you missed?

ما هي الكلمات و الجمل التي لم تسمعها جيداً ؟

Listen again and try to figure out why you missed them.

استمع مرة أخري و حاول معرفة ما فاتك

Was the stress different than you thought?

هل كانت النبرة مختلفة عما ظننت ؟

Was one of the words reduced so much that you didn’t hear it?

هل تم تخفيف كلمة لدرجة أنك لم تسمعها ؟

Was there a word you’ve never heard of before?

هل قيلت كلمة لم تسمع عنها من قبل ؟

When you figure out WHY you didn’t understand it, it’s going to help you get it next time.

البحث عما لم تفهمه سيساعدك المرة القادمة

Keep track of those words and phrases you couldn’t understand, and use them with tip five.

Now this is really cool.

The fifth trick for improving your listening skills

الخدعة الخامسة لتحسين مهارتك في الاستماع

is to listen to a variety of native speakers say the word or phrase

هي الاستماع لعدة متحدثين محليين ينطقون

that you have a hard time hearing or understanding.

الكلمات التي وجدت صعوبة في فهمها

There’s a website called Youglish

هناك موقع يسمي Youglish

where you can plug in a word or a phrase and hear hundreds of examples of native speakers

تستطيع وضع كلمة و ستجد مئات الأمثلة عن كيفية نطق الأجانب لها

using that word or phrase in conversational English.

و استخدامها في أحاديث

Let me show you what I mean.

دعني أبين لك ما أعنيه

Here, I'm on Youglish.com.

هذا موقع youglish

Let’s say I didn’t understand the phrase “I want to do that” as "I wanna do that"

دعنا نضع جملة "أريد فعل ذلك"

when I was working on a podcast listening comprehension exercise.

I type it in, with quotes, and I select US here for American English.

Now it loads a series of videos, all queued up to this phrase that I can listen to in a row.

Use this button to skip to the next example.

"It takes me like an hour and 15 minutes to get here, I wanna do that and..."

"You're gonna come and help me and you say no I don't really think I want to do that..."

"See others doing it and say, wow! I want to do that with my own..."

"You know, I want to do that..." "I'm want to do that and give you a call..."

"And I want to do that today..." "I want to do that, just tell me how to do that..."

"If I want to do that, I need these key..." "I remember thinking I want to do that."

"I want to do that..." "I want to do this, I want to do that..."

"I want to do it. Do I want to do that or do I want to..."

Wow, everyone said wanna. As you hear one example, pause it, and imitate it.

الجميع ينطقها wanna . أنصت للفيديو ثم أوقفه و قلد الصوت

Listen to 10, 15, 20 different people say your problem word or phrase

استمع إلي 10 15 20 شخص مختلف ينطقون الكلمة او الجملة

and spend some time saying it out loud yourself.

أقض وقت تنطقها بصوت عالي بمفردك

What do you notice? Is there a Stop T? Is there a reduction?

ماذا تلاحظ ؟

The next time you hear it in conversation or a movie,

المرة القادمة عندما تسمعها في حديث أو فيلم

you’re going to understand it.
