Most British Expressions EVER! - Learn British English

Today we are doing five of the most British things you can ever say

So if you simply want to improve your English vocabulary

Asa ca daca dora vrei sa-ti imbunatatesti vocabularul

or if you want to learn some expressions to annoy Americans with

sau sa inveti cateva expresii cu care sa-i enervezi pe americani

because they won't understand it

pentru ca nu le vor intelege

then you chose the right video to watch

atunci ai ales sa urmaresti videoclipul corect.

these expressions are still very commonly used

Aceste expresii sunt foarte des folosite

they're not old-fashioned, so you can still use them and it sounds great

nu sunt demodate, asa ca le poti inca folosi si suna perfect

you're talking to a friend

Vorbesti cu un prieten

Your friend wants to ask what are you doing today?

Prietenul tau te intreaba ce faci azi?

and you want to say "Ahh just the small things"

si tu vrei sa spui "Meh, lucruri neimportante"

I'm going to buy food I'm going to wash my hair

Merg sa cumpar mancare, imi spal parul,

I'm going to post a letter

Voi trimite o scrisoare.

those small things

Acele lucruri marunte

you can say

Poti spune

"Ah, just bits and bobs"

"Ah, una alta, nimic important

"Bits and bobs" literally means "small things"

"" Bits and Bobs" inseamna literal "lucruri marunte"

You can also say

De asemenea poti spune

what are you doing today?

ce faci azi?

bits and bobs

Lucruri marunte

or

sau

odds and sods

nimic important

It just means those little things nothing really important

Inseamna pur si simplu ca aceste lucruri marunte nu sunt cu adevarat importante

If you're getting married today, you're not doing bits and bobs or odds and sods

Daca te casatoresti azi, atunci nu faci lucruri marunte

that's a big thing

Asta e o activitate importanta

unless it's your sixth marriage that year

maybe for you it's odds and sods

so it could be small actions but it could also be small things for example:

deci poate fi o activitate marunta sau lucruri marunte, de exemplu

You're at your friend's house you're so hungry

Esti in vizita la prietenii tai si iti este foarte foame

You really want to eat something big a pizza donuts I'm talking real food!

Chiar vrei sa mananci: o pizza, gogosi. Vorbesc de mancarea adevarata

but in their fridge there's only ketchup, mustard, half an onion

dar in frigiderul lor sunt doar ketchup, mustar, jumatate de ceapa

This is not real food, so in this situation

Asta nu e mancare adevarata, deci in aceasta situatie

to answer the question "Do you have any food?" "Not really just bits and bobs. Just odds and sods"

raspunsul la intrebarea "Ai ceva de mancare?" "Nu chiar, numai nimicuri/ chestii marunte

the ketchup, the mustard, the mayonnaise, the half an onion.

"ketchup, mustar, maioneza jumatate de ceapa"

Those are not big things they're just small things

Acestea nu sunt lucruri mari ci mici

"Bits and bobs" or "Odds and sods"

Lucruri mici, neimportante,

Question 1: Tell me in the comments What's in your fridge?

Intrebarea 1: Spune-mi in comentarii ce ai in frigider?

and if they have no food you might get very angry

si daca nu au mancare te-ai putea enerva

in this case your friend might say "Don't get angry!"

In acest caz prietenul tau ar putea sa spuna "Nu te enerva!"

In a very British way, we'd say this...

Intr-un mod foarte englezesc, am putea spune asta...

"Don't throw a wobbly! It's fine!"

"Nu te mai isteriza! Este in regula!"

To "throw a wobbly" means to do this

"throw a wobbly"inseamna asta

You're very loud you're shouting you're aggressive

Vorbesti foarte tare, urli, esti agresiv

you're throwing things

arunci cu lucruri

"What no pizza what kind of friend are you!?"

"Ce, nu ai pizza? Ce fel fel de prieten esti?"

You're throwing a wobbly

Esti isteric. Ai o criza

If your friend wants to be more specific and say "Stop being aggressive"

Daca prietenul tau vrea sa fie si mai explicit si spune " Nu mai fi asa agresiv"

We would change that word to

Am putea schimba acel cuvant cu

"Shirty" to be shirty with someone means to be aggressive with them

"nebun". a fi nebun cu cineva inseamna sa fi agresiv cu el

to be confrontational with them

sa te confrunti cu el

"Stop being so shirty, we can go out for pizza we'll put pineapple-

Nu mai face pe nebunul, putem merge sa luam o pizza, vom pune si ananas pe ea.

"Don't throw a wobbly! we will not put pineapple on the pizza!"

"Ai baut gaz! Nu vom pune ananas pe pizza!"

Question number two for the comments: Tell me when was the last time you threw a wobbly?

Intrebarea nr.2 pentru comentarii: Spune-mi cand a fost ultima oara cand ai avut o criza?

When was the last time someone got shirty with you?

Cand a fost ultima oara cand cineva fost violent cu tine?

You know those times when you have so much work to do? You have to finish that essay

Iti amintesti de acele vremuri cand aveai atat de multe de facut? de terminat acel eseu

you have to finish that report that bit of work that you must do

aveai de terminat acel raport acea treaba pe care trebuia sa o faci

but then

dar apoi

but then you find those videos of cats getting brain freeze

dar apoi gaseai acele video cu pisici care iti blocau creierul

and you've wasted an hour of your time

si pierdeai o ora din timpul tau

when you're wasting time, you're doing nothing productive

cand pierzi timpul nu faci nimic productiv

this is when we say

atunci spunem

to "faff around" / "faff about" or to "Fanny around" / "Fanny about"

"a o lalai", "a sta degeaba"

you can mix them it doesn't matter they all mean the same thing

fuff around/about si funny about/around inseamna fix acelasi lucru

of course the sentence would be "he's faffing around / he's fannying about"

bineinteles expresia este : "El sta degeaba/pierde timpul/o lalaie"

"I've just been faffing around for the last hour watching cat videos!"

"Am cam stat degeaba ultima oara uitandu-ne la filmulete cu pisici!"

Question 3 for the comments: What do you like to do when you faff around?

Intrebarea 3 pentru comentarii: Ce iti place sa faci cand pierzi vremea aiurea?

If it's your birthday and your friend says "Oh no I forgot your birthday!"

Daca este ziua ta si prietenul tau spune "oh, am uitat de ziua ta!"

but then!

They didn't really forget your birthday

De fapt nu au uitat de ziua ta

they were just joking

doar glumesc

in the British Way we would change "joking" to...

in stiulu britanic am schimba " gluma" cu

"wind up" "I'm just winding you up I didn't forget your birthday I got you a puppy!"

"a pacali". " Te-am pacalit, nu am uitat de ziua ta, ti-am luat un catelus!"

so wind-up means to tease, to play a joke on someone

asa ca "a pacali"cu sensul de atachina, de a juca o farsa cuiva

to make fun of them a little bit in a friendly way

de-ai lua un pic peste picior intr-un mod prietenesc

however it does have a negative meaning too

totusi are si o conotatie negativa

so be careful with the context for example

asa ca fi atent la contex. de exemplu

if someone annoys you, you could say "Ugh! She really winds me up"

Daca cineva te enerveaza ai putea spune "Uh! Ma scoate din minti

Again this means they annoy you, so be careful of the context

"Din nou, asta inseamna ca te enerveaza, deci fii atent la context

that is bad, she annoys you

asta e de rau, te enerveaza

This one is kind of good, friendly, jokey

Aste este o gluma buna, prieteneasca

I'm just winding you up, I'm teasing you I'm joking with you

Te pacalesc, te tachinez, glumesc cu tine

so be careful of the context

deci atentie la context

Question 4 for the comments: "Who winds you up in the bad way?

Intrebarea 4: " Cine te scoate din minti ?"

And when was the last time you wound someone up or someone wound you up?

"Wound" is the past tense

"Wound"este trecutul de la "wind"

and this applies to any plan

and for some reason you can't do the holiday

si din anumite motive nu mai poti sa o faci

The holiday plans went pear-shaped

Planurile de vacanta s-au destramat (s-au fasait :P)
