How to Get a British Accent - Lesson One - "The Glottal T and the True T"

Hey guys! Welcome to our new series!

هاي شباب,أهلا بكم في سلسلتنا الجديدة

This one, we're looking at how to get a British accent.

هده المرة نريد الحصول على اللكنة البريطانية

I say British accent, but really I mean London.

أقول اللكنة البريطانية,لكن حقيقتا أعني لندن

Why London? Because, one, it's my accent,

لمذا لندن ,واحد هي لهجتي

and, two, because,

إثنان لأن

well, let's just say...

حسننا,فل نقل

Harry Potter wasn't from Manchester,

هري بوتر ليس من مونشيستر

and he wouldn't be as cool if he was from Manchester.

ولن يكون جيد إذا كان من مونشيستر

So, there is a method to these lessons :

لذا ,هناك طريقة لهذا الدرس

You must follow the correct sequence of lessons,

يجب إتباع المسار الصحيح للدرس

to properly understand,

لفهم بشكل صحيح

and use the British accent correctly.

Today, we're looking at the Glottal T and the True T.

اليوم نبحث عن صوت "ثي" مغلض و "ثي"عادي

What are they?

Well, I'm sure that you've heard the way that British people pronounce

ماذا يكونان

حسنا,أنا متأكد أنك سمعت طريقة نطق البريطانين

"Water".

"ماء"

There is a T in the middle,

هناك "ثي" في الوسط

but,

لكن

usually,

عادتا

not always, but usually, British people don't pronounce the T.

ليس دائما لكن عادتا ,البريطانيون لا ينطقون "ثي"

We pronounce it like it's stuck in the throat.

ننطقها كما لو أنها عالقة في الحنجرة

Like this :

هكذا

Wa'er (water with the glottal T)

(ماء , "ثي" مغلضة)

Wa'er

وأر

This, it's sometimes represented by an apostrophy.

أحياناً تضهر بفاصلة في الاعلى

It sounds like the middle of Uh-Oh..

تبدو كأن في الوسط أه أوه

It's stuck in the throat, it's called glottal.

إنها عالقة في الحنجرة ,تسمي مغلضة

Obviously, not just in water,

من الواضح ليس فقط في كلمة ماء

in other words :

في كلمة أخرى

Bottle

زجاجة

can become

لتصبح

Bo'le (bottle with the glottal T)

بأل (زجاجة غلضة في "ثي" )

So, the T is

إذا تكون هناك "ثي"

there when you spell it

عند تهجئتها

but when you say it,

لكن عند نطقها

it comes a little like bo'le.

تأتي صغيرة مثل بأل

Button could be

زر يمكن أن يكون

bu'on (button with the Glottal T).

بوأن,مع تغليض في ال "ثي"

Other words, like great

كلمة أخرى مثل عَظِيم

could become grea' (great with the glottal T).

يمكن لتصبح غرايئ (مع غلضة في ال "ثي")

And it's very common to hear this,

من الشائع سماع هذا

and it's most common with words which end in T

وأكثر شيوعا مع الكلمات التي تنتهي با "ثي"

For example :

مثال

But (bu'), It (i'),

لكن (به'), انها (إه),

That (tha'), Not (no')

"تلك "ده" ليست "نوه

and all contractions of not :

وتقليص كلمة not

For example : Can't (can')

فمثلا: Can't (can')

Couldn't (couldn')

Couldn't (couldn')

Don't (don')

Don't (don')

wouldn't (wouldn')

wouldn't (wouldn')

shouldn't (shouldn')

shouldn't (shouldn')

musn't (musn')

musn't (musn')

A common question is : does this sound informal or stupid?

والسؤال الشائع هو:هل هذا الصوت غير رسمي أو غبي؟

Well,

حَسَنًا

it can if you use it too much.

قد يكون, إذا إستعملته كثيرا

We don't use the glottal T or the true T every single time.

نحن لانستعمل "ثي" المغلضة ولا ال "ثي" العادية في كل مرة

What sounds more natural is when you have a mix of the two

ما يبدو طبيعيا أكثر هو عندما يكون لديك مزيج من الاثنين

For example, in a sentence like :

على سبيل المثال ، في جملة مثل

"A little bit"

قليلا

you could pronounce both Ts

يمكن أن نطق كلاهما

but it sounds more natural

لكنه يبدو طبيعيا

to use a mix.

لاستخدام مزيج

Like for example :

مثلا

"A li'le bit" (little with the glottal T)

"A li'le bit" (little مع "ثي" مغلضة)

or "A li'le bi' "(little and bit with glottal Ts)

أو "A li'le bi' "(little و bit مع "ثي" مغلضة)

could be both glottal Ts

يمكن أن تكون كلاهما مغلضة

could be one glottal T and a true T.

ويمكن ان تكون تي مغلضة و"ثي" عادية

It's up to you and it sounds more natural to mix things up.

الأمر يرجع لك ويبدو من الطبيعي دمجهما

But, again, you don't want to use this in every single T in the sentence, because, yes that does sound stupid.

لكن ، مرة أخرى ، لا تستخدام هذا في كل حرف ال تي لأن هذا يبدو غبيًا

There are some words which you should never use the glottal T, because it always sounds stupid, just because it does.

هناك بعض الكلمات التي يجب ألا تستخدم معها ال "ثي" المغلضة ، لأنك تبدو غبيا ،إن فعلت ذلك

For example, like "mountain"

"مثلا "جبل"mountain"

we never pronounce it moun'ain (mountain with the glottal T)

لا نلفضها" "موان"

it sounds horrible.

يبدو فظيعا

same with "hotel"

"نفس الشئ مع "فندق

no, we never say ho'el (hotel with the glottal T)

"لا نقول "هوال" (مع "ثي" مغلضة )إطلاقا

never, it's.. it sounds horrible!

يبدو فظيعا

So,

لذا

there is your lesson on the glottal T and the true T.

هدا درسك عن ال "ثي" المغلضة و ال "ثي" العادية

Remember : use it as a mix

تدكر: إستعملهما كمزيج

not always glottal T, not always true T.

ليس دائما ثي مغلضةوليس دائما ثي عادية

Have a mix of them together in the sentence.

إمزجهم معا في الجملة

That's how you sound more natural.

هكذا تبدو أكثر طبيعية
