How to Get a British Accent - Lesson One - "The Glottal T and the True T"

This one, we're looking at how to get a British accent.

...que estará dedicada a cómo imitar el acento británico.

I say British accent, but really I mean London.

He dicho acento británico, pero me refiero al de Londres.

Why London? Because, one, it's my accent,

¿Por qué Londres? Primero: porque es mi acento...

and, two, because,

...y segundo: porque, bueno, digamos que,...

well, let's just say...

Harry Potter wasn't from Manchester,

...Harry Potter no era de Manchester y no molaría tanto si fuese de allí.

and he wouldn't be as cool if he was from Manchester.

So, there is a method to these lessons :

You must follow the correct sequence of lessons,

Today, we're looking at the Glottal T and the True T.

Hoy veremos la diferencia entre la T glotal y la T neutra.

What are they?

Well, I'm sure that you've heard the way that British people pronounce

¿Cuál es la diferencia? Estoy seguro de que...

...habéis oído cómo los británicos pronunciamos 'water'.

"Water".

There is a T in the middle,

Hay una T en el medio, pero...

but,

usually,

...muchas veces, aunque no simpre...

not always, but usually, British people don't pronounce the T.

...los británicos no pronunciamos la T.

We pronounce it like it's stuck in the throat.

Nosotros la pronunciamos así, como desde la garganta.

Like this :

Wa'er (water with the glottal T)

/WOHH-a/

Wa'er

/WOHH-a/

This, it's sometimes represented by an apostrophy.

A veces, lo representamos con un apóstrofo...

It sounds like the middle of Uh-Oh..

...y suena como en medio de 'Uh oh!'.

La 'Uh' se 'atasca' en la garganta. Se la llama T glotal.

It's stuck in the throat, it's called glottal.

Obviously, not just in water,

Obviamente, no sólo pasa en 'water', también en otras palabras.

in other words :

Bottle

'bottle' se convierte en /BOHH-l/.

can become

Bo'le (bottle with the glottal T)

So, the T is

Con lo que la T está ahí cuando escribimos, pero cuando pronunciamos,...

there when you spell it

but when you say it,

it comes a little like bo'le.

...se convierte en un sonido /BOHH-l/.

Button could be

'button' se pronunciaría /BAHH-n/.

bu'on (button with the Glottal T).

Other words, like great

Y otras palabras como 'great', sonarían como /GREIHH/.

could become grea' (great with the glottal T).

And it's very common to hear this,

Esta pronunciación es muy común.

and it's most common with words which end in T

Sobre todo en palabras que acaban en T, por ejemplo:

For example :

But (bu'), It (i'),

That (tha'), Not (no')

and all contractions of not :

...y todas las contracciones de 'not':

For example : Can't (can')

...por ejemplo:

Couldn't (couldn')

Don't (don')

wouldn't (wouldn')

shouldn't (shouldn')

musn't (musn')

A common question is : does this sound informal or stupid?

A veces me preguntáis si la T glotal suena informal o cómica, bueno...

Well,

it can if you use it too much.

...sí, si la usáis demasiado.

We don't use the glottal T or the true T every single time.

Intenta NO pronunciar todas las T como glotales ni como neutras.

What sounds more natural is when you have a mix of the two

Sonarás más natural si haces uso de ambas.

For example, in a sentence like :

Por ejemplo, en la expresión: 'a little bit'.

"A little bit"

you could pronounce both Ts

Podrías hacer dos T neutras...

but it sounds more natural

...pero sonaría más natural usar una de cada. Por ejemplo:

to use a mix.

Like for example :

"A li'le bit" (little with the glottal T)

/a LIHH-l BIT/...

or "A li'le bi' "(little and bit with glottal Ts)

O... /a LIHH-l BIHH/. Podríamos usar dos T glotales...

could be both glottal Ts

could be one glottal T and a true T.

...o podemos usar una T glotal y una T neutra.

It's up to you and it sounds more natural to mix things up.

Lo dejo en vuestras manos, pero suena más natural si las combinamos.

But, again, you don't want to use this in every single T in the sentence, because, yes that does sound stupid.

De todas formas, hay que evitar pronunciar todas las T iguales...

...porque eso sí que suena cómico.

There are some words which you should never use the glottal T, because it always sounds stupid, just because it does.

Hay también palabras que nunca suenan con la T glotal...

...porque siempre sonarán demasiado raras, no sé por qué...

For example, like "mountain"

Por ejemplo: 'mountain'...

...nunca la pronunciamos /MAUNHH-en/. Suena fatal.

we never pronounce it moun'ain (mountain with the glottal T)

it sounds horrible.

same with "hotel"

...Lo mismo con 'hotel'. Ojo. Nunca decimos /hou-HHEL/.

no, we never say ho'el (hotel with the glottal T)

never, it's.. it sounds horrible!

Nunca. Suena fatal.

So,

Remember : use it as a mix

Recuerda combinar las dos.

not always glottal T, not always true T.

No utilices siempre la T glotal, pero tampoco uses siempre la T neutra.

Have a mix of them together in the sentence.

Combínalas en la oración siempre que puedas y tu inglés sonará más natural.

That's how you sound more natural.
