This one, we're looking at how to get a British accent.

I say British accent, but really I mean London.

Why London? Because, one, it's my accent,

and he wouldn't be as cool if he was from Manchester.

So, there is a method to these lessons :

Today, we're looking at the Glottal T and the True T.

What are they?

Well, I'm sure that you've heard the way that British people pronounce

Apa itu?

Baiklah, aku yakin kamu sudah pernah dengar cara orang Brittish melafalkan...

"Water".

"Water" (air)

There is a T in the middle,

Ada huruf "T" di tengah,

but,

tapi,

usually,

biasanya,

not always, but usually, British people don't pronounce the T.

tidak selalu, tapi biasanya, orang Brittish tidak melafalkan huruf "T"-nya.

We pronounce it like it's stuck in the throat.

Wa'er (water with the glottal T)

This, it's sometimes represented by an apostrophy.

It's stuck in the throat, it's called glottal.

in other words :

can become

Bo'le (bottle with the glottal T)

So, the T is

there when you spell it

but when you say it,

it comes a little like bo'le.

Button could be

Button (tombol/kancing) bisa jadi...

bu'on (button with the Glottal T).

Other words, like great

Kata lain, seperti great (hebat)

could become grea' (great with the glottal T).

Bisa jadi grea' (great/hebat dengan T glotalik)

And it's very common to hear this,

Dan itu umum didengar di sini,

and it's most common with words which end in T

dan paling banyak dengan kata-kata uang diakhiri huruf T

For example :

Contohnya

But (bu'), It (i'),

But (tapi), It (itu)

That (tha'), Not (no')

That (itu), Not (tidak)

and all contractions of not :

Dan semua penyingkatan dari not (tidak)

For example : Can't (can')

Contohnya : Can't (tidak bisa)

Couldn't (couldn')

Couldn't (tidak bisa)

Don't (don')

Don't (jangan)

wouldn't (wouldn')

Wouldn't (tidak akan)

shouldn't (shouldn')

Shouldn't (tidak seharusnya)

musn't (musn')

Musn't (tidak harus)

A common question is : does this sound informal or stupid?

Pertanyaan yang sering adalah : apa itu kedengar informal ataupun bodoh?

Well,

Ya...

it can if you use it too much.

Bisa saja kalau kamu menggunakannya berlebihan.

We don't use the glottal T or the true T every single time.

Kami tidak menggunakan T glotalik ataupun T benar setiap saat.

What sounds more natural is when you have a mix of the two

Yang alami itu kalau kamu padukan keduanya.

For example, in a sentence like :

Contohnya, pada kalimat seperti

"A little bit"

"A little bit" (sedikit)

you could pronounce both Ts

Kamu bisa lafalkan kedua jenis T itu

but it sounds more natural

Tapi kedengaran lebih natural

to use a mix.

kalau dipadukan.

Like for example :

Contohnya

"A li'le bit" (little with the glottal T)

A li'le bit (little/kecil dengan T glotalik)

or "A li'le bi' "(little and bit with glottal Ts)

atau "A li'le bi' " (little dan bit dengan T glotalik)

could be both glottal Ts

bisa dua-duanya T glotalik

could be one glottal T and a true T.

bisa satu T glotalik dan satu T benar

It's up to you and it sounds more natural to mix things up.

Terserah kamu dan kedengaran natural kalau dipadukan

But, again, you don't want to use this in every single T in the sentence, because, yes that does sound stupid.

Tapi, sekali lagi, kamu tidak menggunakan T ini di tiap kalimat, karena, ya itu kedengaran bodoh.

There are some words which you should never use the glottal T, because it always sounds stupid, just because it does.

Ada beberapa kata yang kamu tidak boleh gunakan T glottal, karena selalu terdengar bodoh, karena memang.

For example, like "mountain"

Misalnya, seperti "gunung"

we never pronounce it moun'ain (mountain with the glottal T)

Kami tidak pernah mengucapkan moun'ain (gunung dengan T glotalik)

it sounds horrible.

Kedengarannya mengerikan.

same with "hotel"

sama seperti "hotel"

no, we never say ho'el (hotel with the glottal T)

tidak, kami tidak pernah mengatakan ho'el (hotel dengan T glottal)

never, it's.. it sounds horrible!

tidak pernah, itu .. kedengarannya mengerikan!

So,

Jadi,

there is your lesson on the glottal T and the true T.

Remember : use it as a mix

Ingat: gunakan perpaduan

not always glottal T, not always true T.

tidak selalu T glotalik, tidak selalu T benar

Have a mix of them together in the sentence.

Gabungkan keduanya bersama dalam kalimat.

That's how you sound more natural.
