how to express disgust in English.

Now, I had an idea for this video recently

အခုဗီဒီယိုကိုအကြံရတာက မကြာသေးမီကမှပါ

because I was talking to a friend

ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့ ကျွန်မသူငယ်ချင်းကိုစကားပြောနေရင်း

and she felt like the English equivalent

အင်္ဂလိပ်ဘာသာစကားနဲ့ထပ်တူကြတဲ့

for (speaks in foreign language) in Spanish,

စပိန်လို (နိုင်ငံခြားဘာသာစကား)

it wasn't strong enough, it wasn't good enough.

သိပ်ပြီးမညီမျှဘူး သိပ်ပြီးမကောင်းပါဘူး

She wanted better ways of expressing

သူမဖော်ပြဖို့အတွက် နည်းလမ်းကောင်းတွေလိုချင်ပါတယ်

that she hated something, that she finds it repulsive.

သူမတစ်စုံတစ်ခုကို မနှစ်မြို့တာ သူမစက်ဆုပ်တယ်လို့ထင်တဲ့အရာကို

And it's true, I do find the Spanish phrase

for how disgusting to be much more expressive.

ဘယ်လောက်စက်ဆုပ်ဖို့ကောင်းတယ်ဆိုတာကို ပိုပြီးဖော်ပြနိုင်ဖို့လိုတယ်လို့မြင်ပါတယ်

So today I'm going to talk to you through everything.

I'm going to talk you through the noise that we make

your brain will start making connections.

Okay, firstly, let's talk about the sound that we make

ကောင်းပါပြီ ပထမဆုံး ကျွန်မတို့ပြုလုပ်တဲ့အသံနဲ့ပက်သက်ပြီးပြောကြရအောင်

when we are disgusted.

ကျွန်မတို့စက်ဆုပ်ကြတဲ့အခါ

I have noticed that different cultures

ကျွန်မမတူညီတဲ့ ယဉ်ကျေးမှုတွေကို သတိထားမိပါတယ်

and different languages make different sounds,

မတူညီသောဘာသာစကားတွေက ကွဲပြားသော အသံများကိုပြုလုပ်ကြပါတယ်

so I do invite you to write the sound,

or at least attempt to write the sound

What we say is yuck,

or eughh in British English as well,

In American English,

အမေရိကန် အင်္ဂလိပ်မှာ

they are also really inclined to say ew, ew,

ew, ew ဆိုပြီး ပြောကြပါတယ်

sometimes followed by gross. (laughs)

တစ်ခါတစ်လေ gross လို့လည်းပြောကြပါတယ် (ရယ်သံ)

And because we have a lot of American movies and TV shows

ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့ အမေရိကန် ရုပ်ရှင်တွေ တီဗီအစီအစဉ်တွေ တော်တော်များများကြည့်ကြပါတယ်

in the UK,

ဗြိတိန်မှာ

now our children are starting to say ew, gross, and gross.

အခုဆိုရင် ကျွန်မတို့ကလေးတွေ ew, gross, နဲ့ grossဆိုပြီး ပြောတတ်နေကြပါပြီ

In fact, I remember saying it as a child

အမှန်တကယ်တော့ ကျွန်မကလေးဘဝတုန်းကလည်း ပြောဖူးပါတယ်

and my mom was saying, "Don't say that, say yuck.

ကျွန်မေမေက အဲ့ဒါမပြောနဲ့ yuck လို့ပြောဖို့ သင်ပေးပါတယ်

"You're British!"

When we in the UK see something disgusting,

ကျွန်မတို့ ဗြိတိန်မှာ တစ်စုံတစ်ခု မနှစ်မြို့ကောင်းတယ်လို့ထင်ရင်

we're likely to say, if we don't make the noise,

ကျွန်မတို့ ညည်းသံမလုပ်ဘဲ

we could say, how disgusting.

how disgusting (စိတ်ပျက်စရာကောင်းလိုက်တာ) လို့ပြောနိုင်ပါတယ်

But it does seem like a lot of syllables

ဝဏ္ဏသံတွေအများကြီးလို့ ထင်ရပါတယ်

to say something in a short space of time.

အချိန်တိုတွင်းမှာပြောဖို့

How disgusting. (laugh)

How disgusting (စိတ်ပျက်စရာကောင်းလိုက်တာ) (ရယ်သံ)

It sounds quite formal.

သမာရိုးကျဆန်ပါတယ်

So we'd also say, that's horrible, or, oh that's awful.

ကျွန်မတို့ that's horrible (ကြောက်စရာကောင်းလိုက်တာ) ဒါမှမဟုတ် oh that's awful (အို ဆိုးရွားလိုက်တာ)

Americans would just say, gross.

အမေရိကန်တွေကတော့ gross လို့ပြောကြပါတယ်

Some other vocabulary.

အချို့သော တခြားဝေါဟာရတွေ

We have rancid.

rancid ရှိပါတယ်

Rancid.

Rancid.

Rancid is often used for mouldy food

Rancid ကိုမှိုတက်သော အစားအစာတွေကို ပြောဖို့ မကြာခဏသုံးကြပါတယ်

or out-of-date milk, things like that.

ဒါမှမဟုတ် ရက်လွန်နေတဲ့နွားနို့ စသောအရာတွေကိုပြောဖို့

Repulsive.

Repulsive (ရွံစရာကောင်းသော)

Repulsive.

Repulsive.

Repugnant.

Repugnant (မြို့မကျနိုင်သော)

Repugnant.

Repugnant.

So those last two, repulsive and repugnant,

ဒါဆို နောက်ဆုံး၂လုံး repulsive နဲ့ repugnantကို

are often used to describe

ဖော်ပြဖို့အတွက် မကြာခဏ သုံးပါတယ်

very unattractive, offensive things.

အလွန်မျက်စိကျစရာမကောင်းသော စိတ်အနှောင့်အယှက် ဖြစ်စရာကောင်းသော

Gruesome.

Gruesome (မြင်မကောင်းသော)

Gruesome.

Gruesome

Gruesome, you'll often hear it to describe lots of blood,

Gruesome ကိုသွေးတွေအများကြီးထွက်တာကို ဖော်ပြတဲ့အခါ မကြာခဏကြားရမှာပါ

maybe a murder scene or a gruesome horror movie.

လူသတ်ခန်း ဒါမှမဟုတ် ထိပ်လန့်ကြောက်ရွံဖွယ်ကောင်းသော ရုပ်ရှင်လည်းဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်

Nauseating.

Nauseating (မအီမသာဖြစ်ခြင်း)

Nauseating.

Nauseating.

To feel nauseous means that you want to be sick, to vomit.

nauseous ဖြစ်တယ်လို့ခံစားရတယ်ဆိုတာ သင်နေကောင်းဖြစ်ချင်တဲ့အခါ ပျို့အန်ချင်တဲ့ အခါကို ဆိုလိုတာပါ

You might not want to physically vomit,

တကယ်ပဲ ပျို့အန်ချင်တာ ဟုတ်ချင်မှဟုတ်မယ်

but you feel the inclination to vomit.

ဒါပေမယ့် သင်ပျို့အန်ချင်သလိုခံစားနေရပါမယ်

Nauseating is the adjective to describe this.

Nauseating (မအီမသာဖြစ်ခြင်း) ကဒီကိုဖော်ပြဖို့တဲ့ နာမဝိသေသနပါ

A nauseating film, a film that made me want to be sick.

A nauseating film ဆိုတာက ဒီရုပ်ရှင်ကကျွန်မအတွက် စက်ဆုပ်ဖို့ကောင်းပါတယ်

Loathsome.

Loathsome (လွန်စွာမနှစ်မြို့ဖွယ်ကောင်းသော)

To loathe something is quite an emphatic way of saying

တစ်စုံတစ်ခုကို စက်ဆုပ်တယ်လို့ အထူးပြုပြောတဲ့အခါ

to hate something.

တစ်စုံတစ်ခုကို မနှစ်မြို့ဖွယ်ကောင်းတယ်လို့ပြောတဲ့အခါ

So something is loathsome, it is odious.

ဒါကြောင့် တစ်စုံတစ်ခုလွန်စွာ မနှစ်မြို့ဖွယ်ကောင်းတယ်ဆိုတာ ထိုအရာက စက်ဆုပ်ဖွယ်ကောင်းတာကိုဆိုလိုတာပါ

I hate it. (laughs)

ကျွန်မမကြိုက်ဘူး (ရယ်သံ)

Vile and vulgar, this means very unpleasant.

Vile နဲ့ vulgarက အလွန်မကောင်းတာကိုဆိုလိုတာပါ

It's often used to describe bad language.

မကောင်းတဲ့စကားလုံးတွေကို ဖော်ပြဖို့မကြာမကြာသုံးပါတယ်

If somebody is swearing a lot, you might say,

အကယ်၍တစ်စုံတစ်ယောက်က ဆံ‌ရေးတိုင်းတာတဲ့အခါ

"Stop using such vile language, stop being so vulgar."

ကြားမကောင်းတဲ့စကားတွေပြောနေတာ ရပ်လိုက်တော့ အောက်တန်းကျတဲ့ လုပ်ရပ်တွေရပ်လိုက်တော့

One that my grandmother loves to use is ghastly, ghastly.

ကျွန်မရဲ့အဘွားကြိုက်တဲ့ စကားတစ်ခွန်းကတော့ ghastly, ghastly

This just means awful, terrible.

ဆိုးရွားသော စက်ဆုပ်ဖွယ်ကောင်းသော ကိုဆိုလိုတာပါ

If somebody is wearing a terrible outfit, you might say,

အကယ်၍တစ်စုံတစ်ယောက်က ဆိုးရွားတဲ့ဝတ်စုံဝတ်ထားရင်

"Ah she looks ghastly."

အာ သူမအလွန်ရုပ်ဆိုးတာပဲ

Don't ever say that to someone's face because

တစ်စုံတစ်ယောက်ရဲ့ မျက်နှာကိုကြည့်ပြီးမပြောပါနဲ့

that's mean. (laughs)

ဒါက ရိုင်းပါတယ် (ရယ်သံ)

A couple of slang words now that you can use,

သင်သုံးနိင်တဲ့ ဗန်းစကား၂လုံး

and the first one is rank, rank. (laughs)

ပထဆုံးတစ်လုံးကတော့ rank, rank (ရယ်သံ)

I have a feeling that this is a very British one.

ဒါကတော့ ဗြိတိန်ဆန်ပါတယ်

I remember it becoming popular in middle school,

ကျွန်မအလယ်တန်းတုန်းက ခေတ်စားလာတာကို မှတ်မိပါသေးတယ်

so 15 years ago.

If something is rank,

တစ်စုံတစ်ခု rank ဖြစ်တယ်ဆိုရင်

it's just really unpleasant and disgusting.

အဲ့တာက မနှစ်မြို့ဖွယ်ကောင်းတာ ပြီးတော့ စက်ဆုပ်ဖို့ကောင်းတာပါ

Ugh, your salad looks rank. (laughs)

အာက် မင်းရဲ့အသုပ်က ဆိုးရွားလိုက်တာ (ရယ်သံ)

It's very slang.

ဒါကတော့ ဗန်းစကားပါ

Another one is very childish, it's icky.

နောက်တစ်ခုကတော့ သိပ်ကလေးဆန်ပါတယ် အဲ့ဒါကတော့ icky ပါ

Ugh, that's icky, yucky, icky.

အာက် အဲ့တာကတော့ icky, yucky, icky

They're both very childish words.

၂ခုလုံး သိပ်ကလေးဆန်တဲ့စကားလုံးတွေပါ

And the last one, the last slang word is vom-worthy.

နောက်ဆုံးတစ်လုံး နောက်ဆုံးဗန်းစကားကတော့ vom-worthy

Vom is obviously short for vomit,

Vom ကတော့ vomitရဲ့ အတိုကောက်ပါ

and worthy means is deserving of vomit, vom-worthy.

ပြီးတော့ worthy ကတော့ vomit အော့အန်ချင်စရာ ကောင်းတယ်လို့ဆိုလိုတာပါ

That film was vom-worthy, I just wanted to throw up.

ဒီရုပ်ရှင်က အော့အန်ချင်စရာကောင်းလိုက်တာ ကျွန်မအန်တောင်အန်ချင်လာပြီ

Right, now we're going to talk

ကောင်းပါပြီ ခုကျွန်မတို့ပြောမှာကတော့

about eight idioms that express disgust.

စက်ဆုပ်ဖွယ်ကောင်းတာကို ဖော်ပြတဲ့ ဗန်းစကား၈လုံးအကြောင်းပါ

They can also touch on fear and kind of mistrust as well.

အဲ့စကားလုံးတွေက ကြောက်ရွံတဲ့အခါ မယုံကြည်တဲ့အခါ သုံးပါတယ်

Often those emotions are quite closely linked.

မကြာခဏဆိုသလို အဲ့ခံစားမှုတွေကတစ်ခုနဲ့ တစ်ခုအချိတ်အဆက်ရှိပါတယ်

So number one is to make one's skin crawl.

ဒါဆို နံပါတ် ၁က တစ်စုံတစ်ယောက်ကို စက်ဆုပ်ကြောက်ရွံစေတာပါ

To make your skin crawl.

To make your skin crawl.

Brr, you all know the feeling, don't you?

Brr သင်တို့လည်းဒီခံစားချက်ကိုသိမှာပါ သိတယ်မလား?

It's usually used to describe a person

များသောအားဖြင့် လူတစ်‌ယောက်ကိုဖော်ပြတဲ့အခါမှာ သုံးပါတယ်

that makes you feel disgusted, frightened, or unnerved.

သင့်ကို စက်ဆုပ်စေသော ကြောက်ရွံစေသော ချောက်ချားစေသော အရာပါ

For example, that PE teacher

ဥပမာ အဲ့ PE ဆရာ

who used to watch us get changed

ကျွန်မတို့အဝတ်လဲတာ စောင့်ကြည့်နေတဲ့သူ

really made my skin crawl. (laughs)

ကျွန်မကို စက်ဆုပ်ကြောက်ရွံစေပါတယ် (ရယ်သံ)

It's so sad that we've all had creepy teacher experiences.

ကျွန်မတို့မှာ ကျောချမ်းဖွယ်ကောင်းတဲ့ ဆရာရှိခဲ့တာ ဝမ်းနည်းစရာပါ

I've had far too many. (laughs)

ကျွန်မမှာပြောစရာအများကြီးရှိပါသေးတယ် (ရယ်သံ)

And it wasn't just to me,

ပြီးတော့ကျွန်မတစ်ယောက်တည်းမဟုတ်ခဲ့ပါဘူး

it was just to all the girls in the school.

There were really some people

that shouldn't have been teaching,

Number two is to make one's stomach turn.

နံပါတ်၂ကတော့ အော်ကလီဆန်စေတာပါ

If something makes your stomach turn,

it makes you want to be sick.

It's that instant feeling where your whole stomach shifts

I think it's also referred to as the creeps as well,

that's maybe more American.

Ugh he gives me the heebie-jeebies,

he makes me feel frightened, unnerved, and scared,

သူငါ့ကို ကြောက်ရွံစေတယ် ချောက်ချားစေတယ် ထိပ်လန့်စေတယ်

and disgusted. (laughs)

ပြီးတော့ စက်ဆုပ်စေတယ် (ရယ်သံ)

It's very, very similar to make my skin crawl.

အဲ့တာက to make my skin crawl (စက်ဆုပ်ကြောက်ရွံတာ) နဲ့ အလွန်ဆင်တူပါတယ်

It's describing that same feeling.

တူညီတဲ့ခံစားမှုကိုဖော်ပြပါတယ်

It doesn't necessarily have to be used

အဲ့တာကို မဖြစ်မနေ

to describe people, though.

လူတွေကိုပဲ ဖော်ပြဖို့ပဲသုံးတာမဟုတ်ပါဘူး

For example, this abandoned warehouse

ဥပမာ ဒီစွန့်ပစ်ထားတဲ့သိုလှောင်ရုံ

gives me the heebie-jeebies, it gives me the creeps.

ကျွန်မကိုချောက်ချားစေတယ် ကြက်သီးထစေတယ်

Number four is to make someone shudder.

နံပါတ်၄ကတော့ တုန်လှုပ်စေတာပါ

To make someone shudder.

To make someone shudder.

To shudder is to ugh shake and shiver out of disgust.

To shudder ဆိုတာက တုန်လှုပ်သည် တဆတ်ဆတ်တုန်သည်

Ugh. (laughs)

Ugh. (ရယ်သံ)

For example, the thought of eating that mouldy chicken

ဥပမာ မှိုတက်နေတဲ့ ကြက်သားကိုစားရတာ

makes me shudder, argh.

ခိုက်ခိုက်တောင်တုန်တယ် argh

Number five is to be unable to stand the sight of.

နံပါတ်၅ မုန်းတီးသည်

To be unable to stand the sight of.

To be unable to stand the sight of.

Commonly said as, ugh I can't stand the sight of.

အများအားဖြင့် ugh မုန်းတီးသည်

It means you can't bear to look at something,

သင်တစ်စုံတစ်ခုကိုကြည့်လို့မရတဲ့အခါ

even looking at it is too disgusting for you.

သင့်အတွက် အလွန်စက်ဆုပ်ဖွယ်ကောင်း‌နေပါတယ်

For example, I can't stand the sight of spiders.

ဥပမာ ပင့်ကူတွေဆို မြင်ကိုမမြင်ချင်ဘူး

It's all those little spindlerly legs.

အဲ့ရိုးတံငေါငေါခြေထောက်တွေ

Joking, I love spiders.

I was just thinking of something

ကျွန်မတစ်စုံတစ်ခုကိုစဉ်းစားနေတယ်

that people are commonly disgusted by.

Because I don't think people are scared of spiders

as they are disgusted.

For example, again, not true, I love this food,

It's the mould,

Number seven is to break out in a cold sweat,

Again, this can refer to making someone feel scared

ထပ်ပြီး တစ်စုံတစ်ယောက်ကို ကြောက်ရွံစေတဲ့အခါမှာ သုံးပါတယ်

or to making someone feel disgusted.

တစ်စုံတစ်ယောက်ကို စက်ဆုပ်စေတဲ့အခါ သုံးပါတယ်

For example, ugh, the thought of staying

ဥပမာ ugh

in a two-start hotel makes me break out in a cold sweat,

ကြယ်၂လုံးအဆင့်ရှိ ဟိုတယ်မှာနေရမယ်ဆိုတဲ့အတွေးက ကျွန်မကို ချွေးစီးပြန်စေပါတယ်

it makes me feel so disgusted that I sweat. (laughs)

You would use this phrase to describe someone

that you really don't trust.

You're scared of them, disgusted by them,
