5 Common British English Expressions!

That's British sarcasm there

Das war britischer Sarkasmus.

It's extremely cold today

Es ist sehr kalt heute

But, I wanted to talk to you about some of the common British expressions

Aber ich wollte mit euch über übliche britische Ausdrücke sprechen,

That I hear and use more or less every day.

die ich mehr oder weniger jeden Tag höre und nutze.

So, let's get started!

Also lasst uns anfangen!

So, the first one is 'All right?'

Also, das erste ist 'All right?'

And this really means 'Hello, how are you?'

Und das heißt: Hallo, wie geht es dir?

Some people get confused and think it means

Manche Leute verwirrt das und sie denken es heißt:

Is everything ok?

Ist alles okay?

Really, it's a very general question

Es ist wirklich eine sehr generelle Frage

It's a nice way of greeting somebody

es ist eine schöne Art Leute zu grüßen.

So if you hear someone in the street say

Wenn du also jemanden auf der Straße sagen hörst:

'All right?' you can say 'Yeah, how are you?'

'All right?' , kannst du sagen: 'Yeah, how are you?' (Ja, wie geht es dir?)

as a response

als eine Antwort

Ok, so the next one is 'I'm easy'

Das nächste ist 'I'm easy'

And this would be something you use when

Das benutzt ihr wenn

somebody asks you to make a decision

jemand euch nach einer Entscheidung fragt

and you don't really mind

aber es euch nicht wirklich wichtig ist

Would you prefer Italian or Chinese food tonight?

Würdest du heute Abend gerne Italienisch oder Chinesisch essen?

mm...I'm easy

mm...I'm easy

It means 'I don't really mind'

es bedeutet: Ist mir egal.

Ok, the next one is 'on about'

Ok, das nächste ist 'on about'

and this means 'talking about'

und es heißt 'talking about' (darüber reden)

Ok? So if I say 'What's he on about?'

Verstanden? Also wenn ich sage 'What's he on about?'

I'm really saying 'what's he talking about?'

Meine ich: Worüber redet er?

Ok? It can be used quite negatively so if someones talking too much

Es kann sehr negativ sein, wenn jemand zu viel redet,

You could say 'what's he on about!?'

kannst du sagen 'what's he on about!?'

So, my personal favourite of this list is

Mein persönlicher Faavorit dieser Liste ist:

'Bob's your uncle!'

'Bob's your uncle!'

and this, if you're not familiar with the phrase,

und das, wenn ihr nicht vertraut mit dieser Phrase seid

may sound ridiculous, and it is!

mag lächerlich klingen, und das ist es auch!

Err...we're a little bit crazy here in the UK

wir sind ein bisschen verrückt im Großbritannien:

But 'Bob's your uncle' is a phrase we use

Aber 'Bob's your uncle' gebrauchen wir

to conclude a set of instructions

um Anweisungen abzuschließen.

Like, for example, making a cup of tea!

zum Beispiel: einen Tee machen!

You need to boil the water,

Du musst Wasser kochen

You need to add it to a cup

Du musst es in eine Tasse gießen

You need to add a tea bag

Du musst einen Teebeutel hinzugeben

You need to let it brew

Du musst es ziehen lassen

You then need to take the teabag out

Dann nimmst du den Teebeutel heraus

and then add some milk

Gib etwas Milch hinzu

and sugar to taste

und Zucker zum probieren

and then...

und dann..

Bob's your uncle! You've made a cup of tea!

Bob's your uncle! Hast du eine Tasse Tee gemacht.

Ok so this last one 'easy peasy'

Das letzte ist 'easy peasy' ( Kinderleicht)

is something I used to say quite a lot when I was a child

das habe ich oft als Kind gesagt.

But I might still say it every now and again

Aber ich sage es iommer noch

now

This mean's that something is really easy

es heißt, dass etwas sehr einfach ist.

The full rhyme is 'easy peasy lemon squeezy'

Der volle reim lautet: 'easy peasy lemon squeezy'

I don't recommend that you use this phrase in a job interview

Ich empfehle dir nicht, das in einem Vorstellungsgespräch zu sagen

But, for general fun and general conversation

Aber für generelle Gespräche

It's absolutely fine.

ist es in Ordnung

So, how was the exam?

wie war das Examen?

It was easy peasy!

Es war Kinderleicht!

And then if you really want to go for it..

und wenn du es bekräftigen willst

It was easy peasy, lemon squeezy.
