Today I've got a video about a brand new subject.

اليوم لدي فيديو عن موضوع جديد بالكامل

I'm going to talk to you about etymology.

سأتحدث معكم عن (إتامولوجي)

So etymology is the history of a word

و إتامولوجي تعني تاريخ الكلمة و تطورها التاريخي

and then its historical development

over time of its meaning.

مع الزمن من حيث معناها

It's basically like the timeline of a word.

و هي تعتبر الجدول الزمني للكلمة

So you see where it originated from.

لذا فانت ترى من اين اصل هذه الكلمة

And then you can see how it evolved

و ترى كيف تطورت و تغيرت مع الوقت

and changed over time.

و ذلك شيء مثير للغاية

It's something really, really interesting.

دائماً ابحث عن الاتامولوجي الخاصة بالكلمة عندما اتعلم كلمة جديدة

Often when I learn a new word,

I'll definitely look up its etymology

to see which language it originates from,

لأرى اللغة الاصل لهذه الكلمة و كيف كان يتم استخدامها

how it used to be used,

يعتبر هوس بالدراسة

it's something a bit nerdy that I do.

و هو شيء يُمتعني كثيراً

It's something that I get a lot of joy from.

Let me know if you get any joy from doing stuff like that.

أخبروني اذا كنتم تستمتعون بفعل شيء مثل هذا

I just like words.

أنا فقط أحب الكلمات

So today, I've picked ten words with really interesting

لذا فاليوم اخترت 10 كلمات ذو اصول مثيرة للاهتمام

origins and I'm going to chat about them with you.

سوف اتحدث معكم عنهم

In the hope that it will inspire you to study

على أمل ان تلهمكم لدراسة أصول الكلمات أكثر

a little bit more about the origin of words.

And also, at the very least,

و أيضا لتساعدكم على تطوير الانجليزي لديكم على الأقل

help you improve your english.

Let's get started.

لنبدأ

So, number one, is sandwich.

رقم 1

Sandwich

So a sandwich, food between two slices of bread.

مأكولات بين قطعتين من الخبز و هو من أكثر المأكولات الشائعة على الغداء في إنجلترا

It's the most common lunch time food in England.

Fun fact though, I don't really like bread.

و حقيقة مضحكة, أنا حقاً لا أحب الخبز

The reason that I don't like it,

ليس عدم حبي للخبز و لكن لا ارى جدوى منه

I just don't see the point in it.

أعتقد ان الخبز يضيع طعم الأكل بداخله

I feel like sandwiches,

the bread dilutes the flavour of the filling so yeah,

لذا , فقط أعطيني ما بداخله

just give me the filling.

Yeah.

فSandwich حصلت على هذا الإسم

So sandwich, sandwiches actually get their name

من رجل يُدعى جون مونتيجيو

from a man called John Montague

و هو حفيد عائلة Sandwich

who was the fourth earl of Sandwich.

لذا فهو ارستوكراتي من القرن ال18

So he was an 18th century aristocrat

and he used to like to eat his meals

و كان يحب ان يأكل وجباته

at the game tables.

على طاولة اللعب

He liked to play games like cards.

فكان يحب لعب الألعاب مثل الأوراق

And he didn't want to get all the pieces

and cards dirty with his greasy fingers,

و لم يكن يريد للأوراق ان تتسخ من يده المتسخة

so he used to ask for beef between two slices of bread.

لذا فكان يطلب اللحوم بين قطعتين من الخبز

بين قطعتين من الخبز

و قلده أصدقائه و كانوا يقولون

And it caught on with his friends.

They used to say, you know,

سوف أخذ مثل ما أخذه Sandwich

I'll have what Sandwich is having.

I'll have a Duke of Sandwich.

و في النهاية

And in the end it got shortened down to just a sandwich

تم تلخيصها لSandwich و هي الأكلة التي نعرفها و نحبها جميهاً

and it's the food that we know and love today.

Or most of us know and love.

I just know it, don't love it.

أو معظمنا, فأنا فقط أعرفها لا أحبها

Yeah, so there is actually a place

in the UK called Sandwich,

و أيضاً هناك مكان في المملكة المتحدة يسمى

which sounds like a really bizarre name,

Sandwich , الذي يبدو كإسم غريب

و لكن هذا هو الأصل الذي جاء منه الطعام

but actually, that's where the food originates from.

Okay, the next one I think is really interesting.

أعتقد ان التالية مثيرة

It's the word nice.

إنها كلمة Nice

And it comes from Latin to not know

و مصدرها لاتيني و تعني عدم المعرفة او الجهل

or ignorance but then over time it started

و لكن مع الوقت

to be used to describe things as agreeable, then delightful.

أستخدمت لتصف أشياء

متفق عليها او جميلة و اليوم تستخدم كثيرا

Nowadays we use it mostly as a positive adjective.

كصفة حميدة

Okay, the next one, muscle.

التالية هي Muscle

و أصلها كلمة لاتينية

This actually comes from the Latin word mus for mouse.

للفأر

And basically people used to think

و كان الناس يعتقدون ان العضلات تشبه الفأران الصغيرة اسفل الجلد

that muscles looked like little mice under your skin.

و هذا هو أصل كلمة Muscle

So that's where the word muscle comes from.

Okay, the next one, addict.

التالية هي Addict و أصلها كلمة لاتينية

This actually comes from the Latin word to devote

للإخلاص او التسليم لشيء ما

or to surrender yourself to something

و كانت تُستخدم للعبيد

and it was used for slaves.

So by saying you're an addict,

لذا فذكرك انك Addict تعني انك

you're saying you're a slave to something.

عبد لشيء و ذلك حقاً وصف دقيق

Which is quite accurate really.

Okay, the next word, clue.

الكلمة التالية هي Clue

It comes from clew, sounds the same, different spelling.

و أصلها كلمة Clew وتنطق مثلها مع اختلاف الكتابة

Which meant in old English, a ball of thread.

و التي تعني كرة من الخيط في الإنجليزية القديمة

This is because a ball of thread could be used

ذلك لأن كرة الخيط يمكن ان تستخدم لإرشاد شخص للخروج من متاهة

to guide somebody out of a maze or a labyrinth.

So that was a clue.

So that is where clue comes from.

لذا فهذا هو أصل كلمة Clue

The next one, jargon.

الكلمة التالية هي Jargon

That is a good word, isn't it?

فهي كلمة جيدة اليس كذلك ؟

I love saying jargon.

فأنا أحب انا أقول Jargon

And jargon comes from the old, old French word, jargoun.

و أصل كلمة Jargon i هي كلمة فرنسية قديمة جداً و هي Jargoun

Hope I've said that correctly.

إذا كنت قلتها بشكل صحيح

Meaning twittering like birds.

تعني التغريد مثل الطيور

So basically, when someone's using a lot of jargon,

لذا فإذا استخدم الكثير من ال Jargon تعني انهم يغردون مثل الطيور و هو شيء غير مفهوم

they're twittering like birds,

it's not really understandable,

و هو يقولون أشياء ليس لها قيمة

and they're saying a load of rubbish.

Okay, the next one, this could be considered

التالية ,يمكن ان تعتبر فظاظة

a little bit rude, the next one is avocado,

الكلمة التالية هي Avocado و أصلها كلمة ازتيكية

and it comes from the Aztec word,

wonder if I can say, ahuakatl.

لا أعرف إذا يمكنني ان أقول ذلك ahuakatl

Ahuakatl.

You can see the similarity.

يمكن ان ترى وجه التشابه و لكنها في الأصل تعني الخصيتين

But this basically meant, testicle,

as in the male sex organ.

So, avocados are sort of similar shapes.

كاللتان في العضو الذكري

لذا فا Avocado تشبه قليلاً

بالتأكيد يمكنكم ان تروا

Obviously, you can see a sort of resemblance

تشابه ملحوظ في الشكل و الحجم

in shape and texture between an avocado

and a testicle.

بين الAvocado و الخصيتين

And also, they are considered to be aphrodisiacs,

و يعتبروا أيضاً افروديزياكس تعني انهم يزيدون من الشهوة الجنسية

meaning they boost sex drive.

So, that is where the word avocado comes from.

و هذا هو أصل كلمة Avocado

The next one is whisky.

الكلمة التالية هي Whisky

Whisky, that drink that I just cannot seem to like.

المشروب الذي لا أستطيع ان أحبه

I always accept it when it's offered to me

انا دائما ما أقبله عندما يُعطى لي

and I try and look grown up

و أحوال ان اظهر بأني ناضجة

and say yes, on the rocks please.

و أقول" نعم بالثلج اذا سمحت " و بعد ذلك

And then, ugh, no, can't do it.

كلا , لا استطيع ان أفعل ذلك فمذاقه مثل مذاق Fag buts

It tastes like fag butts.

Fag butts, it tastes like fag butts.

Fag butts are cigarette ends.

Fag Buts تعني الجزء الأخير من السجارة

Well whisky, is actually shortened from

و Whiskey مُختصرة من

a whisky bay, and that comes from the old English word,

Whisky Bay و هي تأتي من كلمة إنجليزية قديمة و هي Usqueba

usquebaugh, which is derived from two Gaelic words,

و اصلها من كلمتين جاليكتين

uisce, meaning water, bethu meaning life.

Whiskey و التي تعني مياه

و Bethel تعني حياه

So, they're saying that whisky is water of life.

لذا فهم يقولون ان الWhiskey

هو ماء الحياه

Which I think some would consider to be very accurate.

مما أعتقد ان البعض سيعتبرون انها دقيقة للغاية

Not me, I think it's actually the taker of life.

لست كذلك, فأنا أعتقد أنها أخذة الحياه

The next one is the word vagina.

الكلمة التالية هي Vagina, نعم انه العضو الأنثوي

Yep, the female organ.

And this word is derived from the Latin word

أصل هذه الكلمة هي كلمة لاتينية

for sheath, or scabbard, the thing that would cover a sword.

تعني الغمد ذلك الشيء الذي يغطي السيف

و كلمة Gladius التي تعني سيف

And the word gladius, which means sword,

is commonly used as to refer

كانت شائعا ما تستخدم كرمز للعضو الذكري

to the male sex organ, the penis.

So, the vagina, the sheath, covered the sword, the gladius.

ف Vagina الغمد الذي يغطي السيف

Very interesting.

مثير للغاية

The next one, oxymoron.

الكلمة التالية هي Oxymoron

This comes from the Greek word oxus,

و اصلها كلمة يونانية Oxus التي تعني حاد

meaning sharp and moros, meaning blunt.

و Morros التي تعني حاد أيضاً

So, sharp blunt, the word itself is an oxymoron.

الكلمة ذاتها

Which I think is awesome.

أعتقد ان كلمة Oxymoron رائعة

Ugh, I love languages.

أحب اللغات

Right, that's it for today's lesson.

كان ذلك درسنا اليوم

I know it was a little bit different,

أعرف انه كان مختلفاً قليلاً

but I just kind of wanted to share one

و لكني أردت ان اشارك واحدة من أكثر الأشياء التي أحبها و هي أيتمولوجي

of my passions with you which is etymology

and just where words come from.

و ما هو أصلها

I find it really, really interesting and I think it,

لقد كان هذا فعلاً مثيراً

و أعتقد أنه أذا اردت ان تبدأ في معرفة ايتامولوجي

and history of words onboard,

you can really quickly expand your vocabulary

يمكن تزيد من كلماتك

and you can learn to speak in a more meaningful way as well.
