I'm going to talk to you about etymology.

So etymology is the history of a word

Então, etimologia é a história de uma palavra

and then its historical development

e as mudanças históricas de seu significado.

over time of its meaning.

It's basically like the timeline of a word.

É basicamente a linha do tempo de uma palavra

So you see where it originated from.

Você pode ver onde se originou

And then you can see how it evolved

e vê as mudanças através do tempo.

and changed over time.

It's something really, really interesting.

Quando aprendo uma nova palavra, procuro sua etmologia para ver

Often when I learn a new word,

I'll definitely look up its etymology

to see which language it originates from,

de qual língua se originou, como era usada...

how it used to be used,

É uma coisa meio nerd que eu faço

it's something a bit nerdy that I do.

It's something that I get a lot of joy from.

É algo que me divirto bastante fazendo

So today, I've picked ten words with really interesting

origins and I'm going to chat about them with you.

Let's get started.

So, number one, is sandwich.

So a sandwich, food between two slices of bread.

and he used to like to eat his meals

He liked to play games like cards.

in the UK called Sandwich,

which sounds like a really bizarre name,

Okay, the next one I think is really interesting.

It's the word nice.

And it comes from Latin to not know

or ignorance but then over time it started

to be used to describe things as agreeable, then delightful.

Nowadays we use it mostly as a positive adjective.

Hoje em dia, usamos em grande parte como um adjetivo positivo genérico

Okay, the next one, muscle.

Ok, a próxima:

This actually comes from the Latin word mus for mouse.

Ela veio do latim "mus", que significa rato...

Então, basicamente, as pessoas costumavam pensar que os músculos

And basically people used to think

that muscles looked like little mice under your skin.

se pareciam com pequenos ratos sob a pele...

So that's where the word muscle comes from.

Então é daí que a palavra "muscle" vem...

Okay, the next one, addict.

Okay, a próxima

This actually comes from the Latin word to devote

Esta vem do latim para se dedicar ou se render a algo

or to surrender yourself to something

and it was used for slaves.

e era usada para referir a escravos!

So by saying you're an addict,

Então ao se declarar um "addict", você na verdade se diz escravo de algo

you're saying you're a slave to something.

Which is quite accurate really.

Okay, the next word, clue.

Ok, a próxima palavra:

It comes from clew, sounds the same, different spelling.

Vem de "Clew", que soa exatamente igual, mas se escreve diferente

Which meant in old English, a ball of thread.

Que significava, no Inglês antigo, um novelo de linha

This is because a ball of thread could be used

Isto porque um novelo de linha poderia ser usado para guiar

to guide somebody out of a maze or a labyrinth.

Então isso era um "clew"... E é de onde veio "clue".

So that was a clue.

So that is where clue comes from.

The next one, jargon.

That is a good word, isn't it?

É uma palavra legal, não é? Adoro falar "jargon"

I love saying jargon.

Ahm... E "jargon" vem de uma palavra no francês antigo

And jargon comes from the old, old French word, jargoun.

Hope I've said that correctly.

Será que pronunciei isso certo?

Meaning twittering like birds.

Que significa cantar, como os pássaros

So basically, when someone's using a lot of jargon,

Então, basicamente, quando alguém usa muitos jargões

they're twittering like birds,

Eles estão falando como pássaros, não é entendível

it's not really understandable,

Estão falando algo inútil.

and they're saying a load of rubbish.

Okay, the next one, this could be considered

Ok, a próxima... Essa pode até ser considerada um pouco rude...

a little bit rude, the next one is avocado,

and it comes from the Aztec word,

E ela vem da palavra asteca para

wonder if I can say, ahuakatl.

Imagino se consigo falar isso...

Ahuakatl.

Dá pra ver a semelhança!

You can see the similarity.

But this basically meant, testicle,

Mas isso significava "testículo", o órgão sexual masculino

as in the male sex organ.

So, avocados are sort of similar shapes.

Então... abacates até que tem um formato similar...

Obviamente, há uma semelhança em formato e textura

Obviously, you can see a sort of resemblance

in shape and texture between an avocado

entre um abacate e um testículo...

and a testicle.

E também, eles são considerados afrodisíacos, então eles aumentam o desejo sexual

And also, they are considered to be aphrodisiacs,

meaning they boost sex drive.

So, that is where the word avocado comes from.

Então...

The next one is whisky.

A próxima palavra é

Whisky, that drink that I just cannot seem to like.

I always accept it when it's offered to me

and say yes, on the rocks please.

And then, ugh, no, can't do it.

Fag butts, it tastes like fag butts.

Fag butts are cigarette ends.

Well whisky, is actually shortened from

a whisky bay, and that comes from the old English word,

usquebaugh, which is derived from two Gaelic words,

uisce, meaning water, bethu meaning life.

"Uisce", que significa "água"

"Beatha", que significa "vida"

So, they're saying that whisky is water of life.

Which I think some would consider to be very accurate.

Not me, I think it's actually the taker of life.

The next one is the word vagina.

Yep, the female organ.

And this word is derived from the Latin word

for sheath, or scabbard, the thing that would cover a sword.

O objeto no qual se guarda a espada

E "gladius", que significa "espada"

And the word gladius, which means sword,

is commonly used as to refer

Era comumente usada para se referir ao pênis, o órgão masculino

to the male sex organ, the penis.

So, the vagina, the sheath, covered the sword, the gladius.

Então, a vagina, a "bainha", cobria a espada, o gládio.

Very interesting.

A próxima:

The next one, oxymoron.

This comes from the Greek word oxus,

Ela vem do grego "oxus", que significa "afiado"

meaning sharp and moros, meaning blunt.

e "mōros", que significa "cego/sem-fio"

So, sharp blunt, the word itself is an oxymoron.

Então, "afiado-sem fio", a palavra em si é um oxímoro/paradoxo

Which I think is awesome.

O que eu acho um máximo.

Ugh, I love languages.

Oh, eu amo as linguagens!

Right, that's it for today's lesson.
