Today I've got a video about a brand new subject.

I'm going to talk to you about etymology.

Je vais vous parler d'étymologie.

So etymology is the history of a word

L'étymologie est donc l'histoire d'un mot

and then its historical development

puis son évolution historique

over time of its meaning.

dans le temps de sa signification.

It's basically like the timeline of a word.

C'est fondamentalement comme la chronologie d'un mot.

So you see where it originated from.

Donc vous voyez d'où ça vient.

And then you can see how it evolved

Et puis vous pouvez voir comment il a évolué

and changed over time.

et changé au fil du temps.

It's something really, really interesting.

C'est quelque chose de vraiment très intéressant.

Often when I learn a new word,

Souvent, quand j'apprends un nouveau mot,

I'll definitely look up its etymology

je vais certainement chercher son étymologie

to see which language it originates from,

pour voir de quelle langue il provient,

how it used to be used,

comment il était utilisé,

it's something a bit nerdy that I do.

c'est quelque chose d'un peu ringard que je fais.

It's something that I get a lot of joy from.

C'est quelque chose dont je tire beaucoup de joie.

I just like words.

So today, I've picked ten words with really interesting

Alors aujourd'hui, j'ai choisi dix mots avec des origines vraiment intéressantes

origins and I'm going to chat about them with you.

et je vais en discuter avec vous.

In the hope that it will inspire you to study

a little bit more about the origin of words.

And also, at the very least,

Let's get started.

Commençons.

So, number one, is sandwich.

Donc, numéro un, c'est le sandwich.

So a sandwich, food between two slices of bread.

It's the most common lunch time food in England.

C'est la nourriture la plus courante à l'heure du déjeuner en Angleterre.

Fun fact though, I don't really like bread.

Fait amusant, je n'aime pas vraiment le pain.

The reason that I don't like it,

La raison pour laquelle je n'aime pas ça,

I just don't see the point in it.

I feel like sandwiches,

Je me sens comme des sandwichs,

the bread dilutes the flavour of the filling so yeah,

just give me the filling.

Yeah.

Ouais.

So sandwich, sandwiches actually get their name

from a man called John Montague

who was the fourth earl of Sandwich.

So he was an 18th century aristocrat

and he used to like to eat his meals

at the game tables.

He liked to play games like cards.

And he didn't want to get all the pieces

and cards dirty with his greasy fingers,

And it caught on with his friends.

And in the end it got shortened down to just a sandwich

and it's the food that we know and love today.

Or most of us know and love.

I just know it, don't love it.

Yeah, so there is actually a place

in the UK called Sandwich,

which sounds like a really bizarre name,

but actually, that's where the food originates from.

Okay, the next one I think is really interesting.

It's the word nice.

C'est le mot gentil.

And it comes from Latin to not know

Et cela vient du latin pour ne pas savoir

or ignorance but then over time it started

ou ignorance, mais avec le temps, il a commencé

to be used to describe things as agreeable, then delightful.

à être utilisé pour décrire les choses comme agréables, puis délicieuses.

Nowadays we use it mostly as a positive adjective.

De nos jours, nous l'utilisons principalement comme adjectif positif.

Okay, the next one, muscle.

OK, le suivant, muscle.

This actually comes from the Latin word mus for mouse.

Cela vient en fait du mot latin mus pour souris.

And basically people used to think

Et fondamentalement, les gens pensaient

that muscles looked like little mice under your skin.

que les muscles ressemblaient à de petites souris sous la peau.

So that's where the word muscle comes from.

C'est de là que vient le mot muscle.

Okay, the next one, addict.

OK, le prochain, accro.

This actually comes from the Latin word to devote

Cela vient en fait du mot latin pour se consacrer

or to surrender yourself to something

ou s'abandonner à quelque chose

and it was used for slaves.

et il était utilisé pour les esclaves.

So by saying you're an addict,

Donc, en disant que vous êtes toxicomane,

you're saying you're a slave to something.

vous dites que vous êtes esclave de quelque chose.

Which is quite accurate really.

Ce qui est assez précis vraiment.

Okay, the next word, clue.

OK, le mot suivant, indice.

It comes from clew, sounds the same, different spelling.

Il vient de clew, sonne de la même manière, orthographe différente.

Which meant in old English, a ball of thread.

Ce qui signifiait en vieil anglais, une pelote de fil.

This is because a ball of thread could be used

En effet, une pelote de fil pourrait être utilisée

to guide somebody out of a maze or a labyrinth.

pour guider quelqu'un hors d' un labyrinthe ou d'un labyrinthe.

So that was a clue.

C'était donc un indice.

So that is where clue comes from.

C'est donc de là que vient l'indice.

The next one, jargon.

Le suivant, jargon.

That is a good word, isn't it?

C'est un bon mot, n'est-ce pas ?

I love saying jargon.

J'adore dire du jargon.

And jargon comes from the old, old French word, jargoun.

Et le jargon vient du vieux, vieux mot français, jargoun.

Hope I've said that correctly.

J'espère que j'ai dit cela correctement.

Meaning twittering like birds.

C'est-à-dire gazouiller comme des oiseaux.

So basically, when someone's using a lot of jargon,

Donc en gros, quand quelqu'un utilise beaucoup de jargon,

they're twittering like birds,

il gazouille comme des oiseaux,

it's not really understandable,

ce n'est pas vraiment compréhensible,

and they're saying a load of rubbish.

et il dit un tas de conneries.

Okay, the next one, this could be considered

D'accord, le suivant, cela pourrait être considéré comme

a little bit rude, the next one is avocado,

un peu impoli, le suivant est avocat,

and it comes from the Aztec word,

et il vient du mot aztèque,

wonder if I can say, ahuakatl.

je me demande si je peux dire, ahuakatl.

Ahuakatl.

Ahuakatl.

You can see the similarity.

Vous pouvez voir la similitude.

But this basically meant, testicle,

Mais cela signifiait essentiellement testicule,

as in the male sex organ.

So, avocados are sort of similar shapes.

Obviously, you can see a sort of resemblance

in shape and texture between an avocado

and a testicle.

And also, they are considered to be aphrodisiacs,

So, that is where the word avocado comes from.

The next one is whisky.

Whisky, that drink that I just cannot seem to like.

I always accept it when it's offered to me

and I try and look grown up

and say yes, on the rocks please.

And then, ugh, no, can't do it.

Et puis, euh, non, je ne peux pas le faire.

It tastes like fag butts.

Ça a le goût des mégots de [ __ ].

Fag butts, it tastes like fag butts.

Mégots de [ __ ], ça a le goût des mégots de [ __ ].

Fag butts are cigarette ends.

Les mégots de clopes sont des mégots de cigarette.

Well whisky, is actually shortened from

Eh bien, whisky, est en fait abrégé d'

a whisky bay, and that comes from the old English word,

une baie de whisky, et cela vient du vieux mot anglais,

usquebaugh, which is derived from two Gaelic words,

usquebaugh, qui est dérivé de deux mots gaéliques,

uisce, meaning water, bethu meaning life.

uisce, signifiant eau, bethu signifiant vie.

So, they're saying that whisky is water of life.

Donc, ils disent que le whisky est l'eau de la vie.

Which I think some would consider to be very accurate.

Not me, I think it's actually the taker of life.

The next one is the word vagina.

Yep, the female organ.

And this word is derived from the Latin word

for sheath, or scabbard, the thing that would cover a sword.

pour gaine, ou fourreau, la chose qui couvrirait une épée.

And the word gladius, which means sword,

Et le mot gladius, qui signifie épée,

is commonly used as to refer

est couramment utilisé pour

to the male sex organ, the penis.

désigner l'organe sexuel masculin, le pénis.

So, the vagina, the sheath, covered the sword, the gladius.

Ainsi, le vagin, le fourreau, couvrait l'épée, le glaive.

Very interesting.

Très intéressant.

The next one, oxymoron.

Le suivant, oxymore.

This comes from the Greek word oxus,

Cela vient du mot grec oxus,

meaning sharp and moros, meaning blunt.

signifiant pointu et moros, signifiant émoussé.

So, sharp blunt, the word itself is an oxymoron.

Donc, franchement, le mot lui-même est un oxymore.

Which I think is awesome.

Ce que je trouve génial.

Ugh, I love languages.

Ugh, j'adore les langues.

Right, that's it for today's lesson.
