I'm going to talk to you about etymology.

So etymology is the history of a word

Allora l'etimologia è la storia di una parola

and then its historical development

e la storia del suo significato può evolversi nel tempo

over time of its meaning.

in pratica è la sequenza temporale

It's basically like the timeline of a word.

di una parola, così tu puoi

So you see where it originated from.

vedere da dove ha origine e poi puoi vedere come

And then you can see how it evolved

and changed over time.

It's something really, really interesting.

Often when I learn a new word,

I'll definitely look up its etymology

to see which language it originates from,

how it used to be used,

it's something a bit nerdy that I do.

It's something that I get a lot of joy from.

So today, I've picked ten words with really interesting

So, number one, is sandwich.

So a sandwich, food between two slices of bread.

Fun fact though, I don't really like bread.

So sandwich, sandwiches actually get their name

and he used to like to eat his meals

which sounds like a really bizarre name,

Okay, the next one I think is really interesting.

It's the word nice.

And it comes from Latin to not know

or ignorance but then over time it started

to be used to describe things as agreeable, then delightful.

Nowadays we use it mostly as a positive adjective.

Okay, the next one, muscle.

La prossima "muscle"

Questa viene in realtà dalla parola latina

This actually comes from the Latin word mus for mouse.

"mus", che sta per topo

And basically people used to think

e generalmente le persone erano solite pensare che i muscoli sembrassero come dei piccoli topi sotto la pelle

that muscles looked like little mice under your skin.

So that's where the word muscle comes from.

e quindi è da qui che viene la parola "muscle"

Okay, the next one, addict.

okay, la prossima "addict" viene dalla parola latina

This actually comes from the Latin word to devote

che sta per "dedicarti o abbandonarti a qualcosa"

or to surrender yourself to something

ed era usata per gli schiavi

and it was used for slaves.

So by saying you're an addict,

quindi se dici che sei "addict-dipendente", stai dicendo che sei schiavo di qualcosa, che è abbastanza preciso in effetti.

you're saying you're a slave to something.

Which is quite accurate really.

Okay, the next word, clue.

Ok, la prossima parola

"clue", che viene da "clew"

It comes from clew, sounds the same, different spelling.

Which meant in old English, a ball of thread.

un gomitolo di filo

This is because a ball of thread could be used

Questo perchè un gomitolo era usato per guidare qualcuno fuori da un labirinto o da un dedalo

to guide somebody out of a maze or a labyrinth.

So that was a clue.

Quindi questo era un clue

So that is where clue comes from.

E' da questo che deriva clue.

La prossima "Jargon"

The next one, jargon.

è una bella parola, amo dire "jargon"

That is a good word, isn't it?

I love saying jargon.

And jargon comes from the old, old French word, jargoun.

jargon viene dalla parola francese molto antica "jargoun"

Hope I've said that correctly.

spero di averla detta (pronunciata) bene

Meaning twittering like birds.

ed il significato è cinguettare come uccelli

So basically, when someone's using a lot of jargon,

quindi generalmente quando qualcuno usa molto il gergo

they're twittering like birds,

loro cinguettano come uccelli, non sono molto comprensibili

it's not really understandable,

and they're saying a load of rubbish.

Okay, the next one, this could be considered

and it comes from the Aztec word,

wonder if I can say, ahuakatl.

You can see the similarity.

But this basically meant, testicle,

as in the male sex organ.

So, avocados are sort of similar shapes.

Obviously, you can see a sort of resemblance

in shape and texture between an avocado

and a testicle.

And also, they are considered to be aphrodisiacs,

meaning they boost sex drive.

So, that is where the word avocado comes from.

The next one is whisky.

Well whisky, is actually shortened from

Beh, whysky è l'abbreviazione di whiskybay

a whisky bay, and that comes from the old English word,

e deriva dall'inglese antico usquebaug

usquebaugh, which is derived from two Gaelic words,

che a sua volta deriva da due parole gaeliche: usque, che significa acqua

uisce, meaning water, bethu meaning life.

beatha, che significa vita - aqua vitae in Latino -

So, they're saying that whisky is water of life.

Quindi whisky significherebbe l'acqua della vita

Which I think some would consider to be very accurate.

Not me, I think it's actually the taker of life.

The next one is the word vagina.

Yep, the female organ.

And this word is derived from the Latin word

Questa parola è derivata dalla parola latina per fodero

for sheath, or scabbard, the thing that would cover a sword.

o involucro, l'oggetto che ricopre una spada

e la parola gladio, che è un tipo di spada

And the word gladius, which means sword,

is commonly used as to refer

era comunemente usata o riferita all'organo sessuale maschile, il pene

to the male sex organ, the penis.

So, the vagina, the sheath, covered the sword, the gladius.

Quindi la vagina, il fodero, ricopre la spada, il gladio

Very interesting.

The next one, oxymoron.

La prossima "Ossimoro".

This comes from the Greek word oxus,

Questa deriva dal greco antico oxy, che significa affilato, e moros, che significa smussato

meaning sharp and moros, meaning blunt.

Quindi affilato - smussato, la parola stessa è un ossimoro, che io trovo stupenda. Oh, adoro le lingue!

So, sharp blunt, the word itself is an oxymoron.

Which I think is awesome.

Ugh, I love languages.
