Today I am bringing you loads of idioms

اليوم سأعرض عليكم الكثير من المصطلحات التعبيرية

related to sickness, illness and health,

المتعلقة بالتوعك ، المرض و الصحة

so it's really going to help you

و بالتالي ستساعدكم حقا

improve your English vocabulary

في تطوير مفراداتكم الإنجليزية

and it's going to help you sound more like a native.

و ستساعدكم لتبدوا كالمحليين

Before we get started,

Right, let's get started with the lesson.

حسنا ، لنبدأ الدرس

The first idiom is actually one used to say

المصطلح الأول : يستخدم في الحقيقة للقول

you don't feel unwell, you feel very good,

بأنك لا تشعر بالتوعك و إنما تشعر بحالة جيدة

it is to feel as fit as a fiddle

إنه " أن تشعر بانك سليم كالكمان " و " fiddle " هو معنى آخر للكمان

and a fiddle is another word for a violin,

so if you feel as fit as a fiddle, you feel great,

لذا إذا شعرت بأنك " سليم كالكمان " يعني أنك تماما على ما يرام ، و أنا الان كذلك

I, right now feel as fit as a fiddle.

Another one is to be a picture of health,

مصطلح آخر و هو " أن تكون صورة للصحة "

أن تكون " صورة للصحة "

if you are a picture of health,

you are a great example of good health,

يعني أنك خير مثال على الصحة الجيدة

you could say, my friend was struggling with an illness,

يمكنك أنت تقول " كانت صديقتي تصارع المرض ،

but now she is a picture of health,

لكنها الان بصحة جيدة

she is really, really healthy.

إنها معافاة تماما "

Now the next one is negative

الآن ، التالي سلبي

و هو أن يكون عندك " صداع نصفي "

and this is to have a splitting headache

and to have a splitting headache

ان يكون عندك " صداع نصفي " يعني أن تعاني من صداع مؤلم جدا

is to have a really, really bad headache,

can you imagine it, to split your head?

هل يمكنكم أن تتخيلوا أن رأسكم ينشق

Very painful, anyone who has suffered

مؤلم للغاية ، من عانى من

with a migraine will understand that,

داء الشقيقة ، سيفهم ذلك

I've only had one in my life,

أصبت به مرة في حياتي

but it was a very, very bad couple of days.

لكنهما كانا يومان سيئان للغاية

The next one is one you have probably heard before,

التالي ، من المحتمل أنكم قد سمعتموه من قبل

because when I ask for examples of idioms from my students,

لأنني عندما أسال طلابي عن تعبيرات

they always say this one or it's raining cats and dogs,

يقولون دائما هذا أو " إنها تمطر بغزارة "

which is an idiom we don't use very frequently,

و هو تعبير لا نستخدمه بكثرة

but the one I want to talk about

لكن ما أريد التحدث عنه هو

is to be, look or feel under the weather,

بمعنى أن " تبدو أو تشعر بالتعب "

I normally use it with look, I might say,

أنا أستخدمه عادة مع " تبدو " . فقد أقول

ooh, you look a bit under the weather

" أوه ، تبدو متعبا "

and then the person could reply,

و قد يرد الشخص حينها

yes, I am feeling a bit under the weather

" نعم ، أشعر بالتعب قليلا "

and this means to look, feel or be unwell,

و هذا يعني أن تبدو أو تشعر بأنك لست بخير

it's quite a nice way of saying it,

إنها بالفعل طريقة جيدة لقول هذا التعبير

because you don't want to say to someone, you look dreadful,

لأنك لا ترغب في أن تقول لأحد ما " تبدو مروعا "

you want to say, you look a little bit under the weather,

و إنما ترغب في أن تقول " تبدو متعبا قليلا "

are you unwell, are you feeling okay?

هل أنت مريض ، هل تشعر بخير ؟

The next one is another negative one,

التالي ، سلبي أيضا

it is to take a turn for the worse,

و هو " أن تسوء الحالة الصحية "

if you take a turn for the worse,

إذا ساءت صحتك

it means you are iller or sicker than you were before,

فذلك يعني أنك مريض أكثر مما كنت عليه من قبل

so I could say, I had a cold,

لذا من الممكن أن أقول " أصبت بنزلة برد ،

but then I took a turn for the worse

لكن حينها ساءت صحتي أكثر ،

and I had to go to hospital, so I was quite ill

و اضطررت للذهاب إلى المستشفى" إذاً كنت مريضة جدا

and then I got really ill and I had to go to hospital,

وبعدها ساءت حالتي أكثر فاضطررت للذهاب إلى المستشفى

you can use it in a positive way,

يمكنك استخدام المصطلح بطريقة إيجابية

you can say, to take a turn for the better,

فيمكنك أن تقول " أن حالتك الصحية تتحسن "

but it's not as common.

لكنه ليس مصطلحا شائعا

The next one is to be black and blue,

التالي هو " أن تكون أسود و أزرق "

I wonder if you can guess

أتساءل إذا ما تستطيع تخمين المعنى

what this one might be, black and blue?

ماذا قد يكون هذا ؟ " أسود و أزرق ؟! "

If you're black and blue,

أن تكون " أسود و أزرق "

it means that you have quite a few bruises,

يعني أنك مصاب بكثير من الكدمات

so the marks you get after you've been hit,

وهي العلامات التي تظهر عليك بعدما تتلقى ضربا

so if you are very bruised, then you could say

إذا ، إذا كان عندك الكثير من الكدمات يمكنك حينها أن تقول

that you are black and blue, this relates to the next one,

بأنك " أسود و أزرق " ، هذا يتعلق بالتالي

because the next one is to take a tumble,

لأن التالي هو " أن تتعرض للسقوط "

if you have taken a tumble, it means you have fallen over,

إذا " تعرضت للسقوط " فيعني أنك سقطت

so if you fall over and you get bruises,

لذا إذا سقطت و ظهرت عليك كدمات

you can say, ooh, I've taken a tumble

يمكنك أن تقول " أوه لقد تعرضت للسقوط

and I'm black and blue,

، إنني أسود و أزرق "

see if your English teacher understands you,

انظر إذا فهمك أستاذك الإنجليزي

when you say that. (laughs)

عندما تقول ذلك . ( ضحك

The next one is to go under the knife,

التالي هو ” أن تذهب تحت السكين "

this means to have an operation,

هذا يعنى أن " لديك عملية "

but it also can refer to cosmetic surgery,

لكنه أيضا يمكن أن يشير إلى عملية تجميلية

so if somebody says, she's been under the knife,

لذا ، إذا قال أحدهم " لقد ذهبت تحت السكين "

it means she's had cosmetic surgery,

يعني أنها أجرت عملية تجميل

but if I said, I had a really sore leg,

و لكن إذا قلتُ " كانت رجلي ملتهبة

but I went under the knife,

، لكنني ذهبت تحت السكين "

it means I had a sore leg, but now I've had an operation.

يعني أن رجلي كانت ملتهبة لكن الآن قد أجريت لها عملية

Now the next one is to be on one's last legs

التالي الآن بمعنى " أن يكون أحدٌ في محطته الأخيرة "

and this means that somebody is very close to exhaustion,

و هذا يعني أنه على مقربة من الهلاك

to being very, very tired and collapsing or even death,

أنه متعب جداً و ينهار ، أو حتى يعني الموت

so if somebody says, I think they're on their last legs,

لذلك إذا قال أحدهم " أعتقد بأنهم في محطتهم الأخيرة "

it means, I don't think they're going to live very long,

يعني " لا أعتقد بأنهم سيعيشون لفترة أطول "

which is obviously very, very, very sad,

و هو بالتأكيد أمرٌ محزن جداً

but in Britain especially,

لكن في بريطانيا على وجه الخصوص

we like to use a lot of idiomatic phrases

نحبذ إستخدام الكثير من التعابير الإصطلاحية

around very serious situations,

حيال مواضيع جدية حقاً

so instead of to die, we say to pop one's clogs,

لذا ، بدلاً من " die " نقول " pop one's clogs " بمعني " تُوُفِي "

you've popped your clogs,

لقد مُت

it's just a way of dealing with something quite serious,

إنها فقط طريقة للتعامل مع موقف جدي بحت

so if someone's on their last legs,

لذلك أن يكون أحد ما في محطته الأخيرة

we're not trying to be funny, we're not joking,

فنحن لا نحاول أن نكون مضحكين ، لا نمزح

we just, that's how we deal

نحن فقط ... ، هكذا نتعامل

with a really difficult, sad situation.

مع وضع صعب جدا و محزن

Another one that's quite similar

تعبير آخر ، مشابه لهذا

is to be hanging by a thread,

هو بمعنى " أن تكون على وشك الضياع "

it means you're very close to either

يعني أنك قريب جدا من إما

the situation becoming very serious or even to death.

الوضع الأكثر خطراً او حتى من الموت

The last one is actually my favourite health-related idiom,

الأخير هو في الواقع تعبيري المفضل المتعلق بالصحة

because it's so funny, (laughs)

لأنه مضحك . ( ضحك

I find it really funny,

أجده مضحك جداً

it is to feel like, or to look like death warmed up,

إنه بمعنى " أن تبدو أو تشعر بالتعب الشديد "

again, this is an idiom, I would love to know

مجدداً ، هذا مصطلح تعبيري . أحب أن أعرف

if you have an example of this one in your own language,

إذا كان لديكم تعبير مقابل لهذا في لغتكم الأم

if somebody looks just dreadful, so ill, so unwell,

إذا يبدو أحد ما مروعاً ، مريض جداً أو ليس على مايرام

pale, grey, big bags under their eyes,

شاحب ، رمادي اللون ، ذو تكيسات كبيرة تحت عينيه

you can tell them they look like death warmed up,

يمكنك أن تقول له " you look like death warmed up "

it's just such a funny phrase,

إنها فقط كعبارةمضحكة

you can't not smile, when somebody says that to you,

لا تسطيع ألا تبتسم عندما يقولها احد لك

unless you're feeling like death warmed up of course.

ما لم تشعر بألفعل بأنك " متعب جداً "

So yeah, see if you can use that

إذاً نعم ، للنرى إذا ما سستطيعون إستخدامها

in conversation with a native,

في حوار مع متحدث محلي

because I think they will really find that quite funny.

لأنني أظن بأنهم سيجدوا ذلك مضحك حقاً
