There is one thing we all have in common.

هناك شيء واحد مشترك بيننا جميعا.

A thing that we all own and use every day.

شيء نمتلكه جميعًا ونستخدمه كل يوم.

This thing comes in all shapes, colours and sizes.

يأتي هذا الشيء بجميع الأشكال والألوان والأحجام.

Some of us use this thing more than others.

البعض منا يستخدم هذا الشيء أكثر من غيره.

Many of us take good care of this thing,

الكثير منا يعتني بهذا الشيء جيدًا،

while others neglect theirs.

بينما يهمل الآخرون أمورهم.

You are born with this thing

لقد ولدت بهذا الشيء

and it is yours until the day it stops working.

وهو ملك لك حتى اليوم الذي يتوقف فيه عن العمل.

of course I am of course talking about the human body.

بالطبع أنا أتحدث بالطبع عن جسم الإنسان.

It is interesting to note that there  are many idioms and phrases in English

ومن المثير للاهتمام أن نلاحظ أن هناك العديد من التعابير والعبارات في اللغة الإنجليزية

that refer to the body…

التي تشير إلى الجسم...

or to be more precise, body parts.

أو بشكل أكثر دقة، إلى أجزاء الجسم.

Today we will look at some of them together…

اليوم سننظر إلى بعضها معًا...

the idioms I mean;

المصطلحات التي أقصدها؛

not the actual body parts.

وليس أجزاء الجسم الفعلية.

There are many ways of using the words

هناك طرق عديدة لاستخدام الكلمات

that name parts of the body in figurative form.

التي تسمي أجزاء من الجسم بشكل مجازي.

For example…

على سبيل المثال...

To be sick to your stomach

أن تشعر بالغثيان.

To feel disgusted or deeply upset by something.

أن تشعر بالاشمئزاز أو الانزعاج الشديد من شيء ما.

“I feel sick to my stomach over losing my job.”

"أشعر بالغثيان بسبب فقدان وظيفتي."

To have a nose for something

أن يكون لديك أنف لشيء ما

To have good intuition or  ability of a certain thing.

أن يكون لديك حدس أو قدرة جيدة على شيء معين.

“I have a nose for finding bargains in the sales.”

"لدي خبرة في العثور على صفقات في المبيعات."

To cost an arm and a leg

أن تكلف ذراعًا وساقًا،

An item that was very expensive,  or more expensive than you thought.

وهو عنصر كان باهظ الثمن للغاية، أو أغلى مما كنت تعتقد.

“This watch cost me an arm and a leg.”

"لقد كلفتني هذه الساعة ذراعًا وساقًا."

To be a sight for sore eyes

ليكون منظرا لالتهاب العيون

To look beautiful. Often expressed  as relief during a bad time.

. لكي يبدو جميلا. غالبًا ما يتم التعبير عنها على أنها راحة خلال الأوقات العصيبة.

“You really are a sight for  sore eyes on this dull day.”

"أنت حقًا مشهد للعيون المؤلمة في هذا اليوم الممل."

Give someone the elbow.

إعطاء شخص ما الكوع.

To push someone aside, or  exclude someone from an activity.

لدفع شخص ما جانبًا، أو استبعاد شخص ما من نشاط ما.

“I don’t have a girlfriend, I  gave her the elbow last week.”

"ليس لدي صديقة، لقد ضربتها بالمرفق الأسبوع الماضي."

Get your foot in the door.

الحصول على قدمك في الباب.

Take your place when an opportunity arises.

خذ مكانك عندما تسنح الفرصة.

“Get your foot in the door,  or you will not be chosen.”

"ضع قدمك في الباب، وإلا فلن يتم اختيارك."

Cut off your nose to spite your face.

اقطع أنفك لنكاية وجهك.

To harm oneself whilst punishing someone.

إيذاء النفس أثناء معاقبة شخص ما.

“By not talking to me, you are cutting  your nose off to spite your face.”

"من خلال عدم التحدث معي، فإنك تقطع أنفك لنكاية وجهك."

Get your teeth into something

أدخل أسنانك في شيء

To do something with passion and enthusiasm.

ما لتفعله بشغف وحماس.

“I can’t wait to get my  teeth into this new project.”

"لا أستطيع الانتظار حتى أتمكن من المشاركة في هذا المشروع الجديد."

To be neck and neck with someone.

أن تكون الرقبة والرقبة مع شخص ما.

At an equal position in a contest or race.

في مركز متساوٍ في مسابقة أو سباق.

“We are neck and neck on the sales chart.”

"نحن متقاربون على مخطط المبيعات."

Something is a no brainer.

شيء لا يحتاج إلى تفكير.

A sure fire thing that must  be done… without question.

شيء مؤكد يجب القيام به ... بلا شك.

To be all fingers and thumbs.

أن تكون جميع الأصابع والإبهام.

To be in a confused or clumsy state.

أن تكون في حالة ارتباك أو خرقاء.

You are all fingers and thumbs.

أنتم جميعا الأصابع والإبهام.

“I can’t work this machine,  I’m all fingers and thumbs.”

"لا أستطيع تشغيل هذه الآلة، أنا كلي إصبع وإبهام."

Something is a pain in the neck.

شيء ما هو ألم في الرقبة.

An annoying thing that makes a person angry.

أمر مزعج يغضب الإنسان.

“My boss is such a pain in the neck.”

"مديري يعاني من ألم شديد في الرقبة."

To have the nerve to do something.

أن يكون لديك الجرأة لفعل شيء ما.

Show courage and bravery.

إظهار الشجاعة والشجاعة.

“I can’t believe you had  the nerve to quit your job.”

"لا أستطيع أن أصدق أن لديك الجرأة لترك وظيفتك."

Get something off your chest.

أخرج شيئًا من صدرك.

Talk to someone about your  problems or a thing troubling you.

تحدث مع شخص ما عن مشاكلك أو عن شيء يزعجك.

“You will feel much better after  you get it off your chest.”

"سوف تشعر بتحسن كبير بعد أن تزيله من صدرك."

To get cold feet.

لتحصل علي اقدام بارد.

Lose one’s courage, or to back out of something.

فقدان الشجاعة، أو التراجع عن شيء ما.

“I was going to marry her, but I got cold feet.”

"كنت سأتزوجها، لكني شعرت بالخوف".

Let your hair down.

دع شعرك ينسدل.

Have some fun… enjoy yourself for a while.

استمتع ببعض المرح... استمتع بوقتك لبعض الوقت.

“Let’s go out tonight and let our hair down.”

"دعونا نخرج الليلة ونترك شعرنا منسدلاً."

Bite your tongue.

توقف عن هذا الكلام.

Hold back from saying what you really mean,

امتنع عن قول ما تعنيه حقًا،

or what you want to say.

أو ما تريد قوله.

“I had to bite my tongue while  talking with my boss today.”

"اضطررت إلى عض لساني أثناء التحدث مع مديري اليوم."

Pay lip service to someone.

دفع خدمة الكلام لشخص ما.

To say kind things to someone,  so as to make them feel better.

أن تقول أشياء لطيفة لشخص ما، وذلك لجعله يشعر بالتحسن.

Insincere views meant to make one feel better.

وجهات النظر غير الصادقة تهدف إلى جعل المرء يشعر بالتحسن.

“The local politician will not do anything…

"السياسي المحلي لن يفعل أي شيء...

It is all lip service to keep us quiet.”

كل ذلك مجرد كلام لإبقائنا هادئين".

Keep your chin up.

كن فخورا.

Stay happy and positive about things.

كن سعيدًا وإيجابيًا بشأن الأشياء.

“Keep your chin up, things will be fine.”

"ابقي ذقنك مرفوعاً، الأمور ستكون على ما يرام."

Keep your eye on the ball.

ابقي عينك على الكورة.

Concentrate on something  without losing sight of it.

التركيز على شيء ما دون إغفاله.

“In this job, you have to  keep your eye on the ball.”

"في هذه الوظيفة عليك أن تبقي عينك على الكرة."

A slap on the wrist.

صفعة على المعصم.

A mild punishment, with no serious consequences.

عقوبة خفيفة، دون عواقب وخيمة.

“The police gave him a slap  on the wrist and let him go.”

"صفعته الشرطة على معصمه وأطلقت سراحه".

Turn a blind eye to something.

غض البصر عن شيء ما.

Ignore a bad action.

تجاهل عمل سيء.

“For ten years they turned a  blind eye to what was happening.”

"لمدة عشر سنوات غضوا الطرف عما كان يحدث."

To have butterflies in your stomach.

أن يكون لديك فراشات في معدتك.

The mixture of excitement and fear over something.

مزيج من الإثارة والخوف من شيء ما.

“Before my first performance I  had butterflies in my stomach.”

"قبل أدائي الأول كان لدي فراشات في معدتي."

To tear your hair out.

لتمزيق شعرك.

To become stressed or angry  over something or someone.

الشعور بالتوتر أو الغضب بسبب شيء ما أو شخص ما.

“I was tearing my hair out  whilst writing this report.”

"كنت أمزق شعري أثناء كتابة هذا التقرير."

Give someone a hand.

ساعد شخص.

Help someone with a task.  Offer assistance to someone.

مساعدة شخص ما في مهمة. تقديم المساعدة لشخص ما.

“I can give you a hand moving  your furniture in if you want.”

"يمكنني أن أساعدك في نقل أثاثك إذا أردت."

Dip your toe in the water.

اغمس إصبع قدمك في الماء.

Try something new, to see if you like it.

جرب شيئا جديدا، لمعرفة ما إذا كنت ترغب في ذلك.

“Just dip your toe in the water first

"فقط قم بغمس إصبع قدمك في الماء أولاً

before you decide if you want to do it.”

قبل أن تقرر ما إذا كنت تريد القيام بذلك أم لا."

So as you can see…

there are many expressions in English

هناك العديد من التعبيرات في اللغة الإنجليزية

that use parts of the body in a figurative way.

التي تستخدم أجزاء من الجسم بطريقة مجازية.

It is worth remembering that many languages

ومن الجدير بالذكر أن العديد من اللغات

have ‘figures of speech’ within them.

تحتوي على "أشكال كلامية" بداخلها.

Perhaps some of the ones I showed you today

ولعل بعضًا مما عرضته عليك اليوم
