English pronunciation lesson.

Now for English learners who want to sound natural,

بالنسبة لمتعلمي الانجليزية الذين يريدون أن يكون لفظهم طبيعياً

vowels cause headaches.

الأحرف الصوتية تسبب الصداع

With just five vowel letters in the English alphabet,

فمع وجود خمسة منها فقط بالابجدية الانجليزية

there are twenty different vowel sounds

هناك عشرون صوتاً مختلفاً

used in spoken English.

مستعمل بالانجليزية المتداولة

So today I want to focus on three of the most common

لذا فاليوم أود أن أركز على ثلاثة شائعة منها

diphthong vowel sounds.

الألفاظ الصوتية المدغمة

as in 'say'

كما في كلمة " say" (قل)

as in 'boy' and

و في : "boy" (ولد)

as in 'bike'.

و "bike" (دراجة هوائية)

And if you're wondering what the heck a diphthong is,

وإذا كنت تتساءل عما هي الألفاظ المدغمة،

don't go anywhere, I'll explain it all for you in just a sec.

So what the heck is a diphthong?

It's a complicated word that you will probably

never really need to use yourself

but a diphthong is a type of vowel sound

و لكن الإدغام هو نوع من أصوات العلة

and there are two types of vowels, monophthong,

و هناك نوعان من العلة "monophtong"

that's like

They're short and singular sounds.

أصوات قصيرة و مفردة

But diphthongs are a little different because they are a

و لكن الادغامات مختلفة لأن هناك

single vowel sound that actually combines

two vowel sounds together in the same syllable.

In diphthongs, the first sound is stronger

than the second one

but it's important that both sounds are made together

in the same syllable.

Now the reason why this is important for you is because

many of you are Italian,

Greek, Thai, Spanish, Vietnamese

و يونانيون و تايلنديون و إسبانيون و فيتناميون

and you don't actually have this type of vowel sound

و ليس عندكم أصوات العلة هذه

in your native language so it's a completely new sound

في لغتكم الأم لذا فهي كلياً جديدة عليكم

that you need to learn.

و أنتم بحاجة لتعلمها

And for that reason, it's really common

و لهذا السبب فمن الشائع

for many of you to mispronounce diphthongs

لدى الكثيرين منكم أن يخطئوا في لفظ الإدغامات

and only use the first sound.

و يلفظون الجزء الأول فقط

So if you're only using one sound, then the vowel sound

لذا ان كنتم تلفظون جزء واحدا فقط

that you're making is wrong but that's exactly

إنه خطأ و لكن هذا بالضبط

what you're doing here, right?

ما نعمل عليه الان

We're going to practise diphthong sounds together

سنتدرب على أصوات مختلفة معاً

and we'll focus on three of the most common ones.

و سنركز على ثلاث شائعة منها

Now there's actually eight diphthongs

هناك في الواقع ثمان ادغامات

in British and Australian English,

في الانجليزية البريطانية و الأسترالية

there's only five in American English,

و خمسة فقط في الأمريكية

but we're going to practise them

و لكن سوف نتدرب عليهم

together in this lesson today.

Let's start with

Now this sound is made with the

vowel sound pushed together so it's

as in 'egg' and the

Now check it out, notice how my mouth moves

So when you're making a diphthong sound,

your mouth needs to move while you are making

this sound. For this one, it's

Right?
