What's the difference between these two words?

ما الفرق بين هاتين الكلمتين؟

If you're learning English, words like this

إذا كنتم تتعلمون اللغة الإنجليزية ، كلمات مثل هذه

might seem a little confusing or maybe even frustrating.

قد تبدو مربكة بعض الشيء أو حتى محبطة.

and show you how to use each of those words correctly.

Well I'm ready to get started, are you?

He lives on the other side.

He lives on the other side. إنه يعيش على الجانب الآخر.

He lives on another side.

Are they really that different?

They're definitely similar

and that's what's tricky about them

but they're not the same.

Let's talk about the meaning of these two words first.

'Other' can mean additional or extra.

What other countries has he travelled to

besides France?

So I know that he's travelled to France

but what additional countries has he travelled to

other than France or apart from France?

But it's not exactly the same.

We use 'another' to say one more.

إننا نستخدم "another" لقول واحد آخر.

There's another sandwich if you're hungry.

There's another sandwich if you're hungry. هناك شطيرة أخرى إن كنت جائعًا.

So that means, well you've already had a sandwich

but now I'm offering you more.

So both 'other' and 'another'

can mean additional or extra

but they can also both mean different or alternative.

I can ask:

So I don't want that type of juice,

I want to know if there are alternatives, other types of

juice, different ones from the juice that I've been offered.

Now 'another' is similar to 'other'

الآن "another" يشبه "other"

but it's not exactly the same.

لكنها ليست بالضبط نفس الشيء.

There's so much traffic. Is there another way to go?

There's so much traffic. Is there another way to go? هنالك الكثير من حركة المرور. هل هناك طريقة أخرى للذهاب؟

So I want to know is there an alternative way

to get to my destination?

Is there a different route that I can take?

So again, using 'another' means one more

but did you notice that the way they're used,

the structure of the sentences can be a little different

It's not always possible to simply swap

one for the other, you know.

You can't just switch them.

So in a moment, we're going to take a closer look

Both 'other' and 'another' can be used as determinants.

Now if you can't remember exactly what a determiner is,

well that's okay. It's a type of word that introduces

a noun and it makes it clear

what we're talking about.

All of us, the cookie,

each person, the other job,

Now notice how 'other' is used here.

We use it after 'the' or a possessive word like

نستخدمها بعد كلمة the أو ضمير ملكية مثل

'his other job' then followed by a singular or plural noun.

"his" وظيفته الأخرى ثم يليها اسم المفرد أو الجمع.

So can you think of some of your own examples like this

لذا هل يمكنكم التفكير في بعض الأمثلة الخاصة بكم مثل هذه

Most of the time 'other' is used with uncountable nouns

يتم استخدام "other" معظم الوقت مع الأسماء غير المعدودة

and plural countable nouns.

وأسماء الجمع المعدودة.

Do you have any other information for me?

هل لديك أي معلومات أخرى لي؟

So here 'other' is a determiner for information.

حتى هنا "other" هو المحدد للمعلومات.

'Information' is an uncountable noun.

"المعلومات" هي اسم غير معدود.

Do you know any other good books by this author?

هل تعرف أي كتب جيدة أخرى من قبل هذا المؤلف؟

So 'other' is determining 'books', a plural countable noun

لذا، فإن "other" تحدد "الكتب" ، وهي عبارة تعد اسم جمع معدود

Got it so far?

But what about if the noun was singular like:

ولكن ماذا لو كان الاسم مفردًا مثل:

his other job?

So 'other' can be used with singular countable

لذلك يمكن استخدام "other" مع الأسماء المعدودة

nouns that it needs another determiner,

المفردة التي تحتاج إلى محدد آخر،

usually an article or a pronoun.

عادة أداة تعريف أو ضمير.

So you can't say "I don't like other dog"

لذلك لا يمكنك أن تقول "I don't like other dog"

You need to say: "I don't like her other dog" or

عليك أن تقول: "I like her other dog" أو

"the other dog"

"the other dog"

We can use the single article 'an' as well.

يمكننا استخدام أداة التعريف الفردي "an" أيضًا.

Another, another dog.

فتصبح another، كلب آخر

So when the noun is singular and countable,

لذلك عندما يكون اسم مفردا معدودا،

you can use 'another' as the determiner.

يمكنك استخدام "another" كمحدد.

One of the sandwiches has cheese,

One of the sandwiches has cheese واحد من السندويشات تحتوي الجبن،

the other sandwich doesn't.

the other sandwich doesn't والأخرى لا تحتويه.

Notice the article 'the' here, before 'other'.

لاحظوا أداة التعريف "the" ، قبل "other".

This makes it possible to use 'other' with singular

هذا يجعل من الممكن استخدام "other" مع الأسماء

countable nouns

المفردة المعدودة

and this happens in really specific situations.

وهذا يحدث في مواقف محددة جدًا.

You can use 'the other' when you're talking about

يمكنك استخدام "the other" عندما تتحدث

two things or people and you want to talk about

عن شيئين أو أشخاص وتريد التحدث عن

the second thing or person.

الشيء الثاني أو الشخص الآخر.

The first sandwich has cheese, the second

لدى الشطيرة الأولى جبن، الثانية

or the other doesn't.

أو الأخرى ليس لديها.

She has a bracelet on one wrist

لديها سوار على معصم واحد

and on the other she wears a watch.

وعلى الآخر ترتدي ساعة.

So she has two wrists,

لذلك لديها معصمان،

the first has a bracelet and the second has a watch.

على الأول سوار وعلى الثاني ساعة.

I can't just say:

لا استطيع ان أقول:

"On the other wrist she wears a watch", right?

"On the other wrist she wears a watch" أحسن هذا؟

Because the idea is incomplete, I would

لأن الفكرة غير مكتملة، سأترك

really leave the listener asking a question like:

المستمع يطرح سؤالًا مثل:

what was on the first wrist then?

ماذا كان في الرسغ الأول إذن؟

'Another' is also used as a determiner

تستخدم "another" أيضًا كمحدد

so it can be used with singular countable nouns.

لذا يمكن استخدامها مع الأسماء المفردة المعدودة.

Do you have another room available?

هل لديك غرفة أخرى متاحة؟

So here 'another' is the determiner

فهنا "another" هو المحدد

to the singular countable noun, 'room'.

إلى الاسم المفرد المعدود، "الغرفة".

I can't use 'another' with the plural form, I can't use

لا يمكنني استخدام كلمة "another" مع صيغة الجمع، لا أستطيع استخدامها

'another' with 'rooms'.

"another" مع "الغرف rooms".

If I want to ask if there are extra rooms available,

إذا كنت أريد أن أسأل ما إذا كانت هناك غرف إضافية متاحة،

more than one room, I need to use 'other' instead, okay?

أكثر من غرفة واحدة، أحتاج إلى استخدام "other" بدلاً من ذلك، حسناً؟

Do you have other rooms available?

هل لديك غرف أخرى متاحة؟

Or do you have another room available?

أو هل لديك غرفة أخرى متاحة؟

There is one exception to this rule though.

هناك استثناء واحد لهذه القاعدة بالرغم من ذلك.

'Another' can be used with a determiner

يمكن استخدام "another" مع محدد

with plural nouns when a plural noun has

مع أسماء الجمع عندما يكون لدى اسم الجمع

a number or a number phrase in front of it

like 'a few' or 'a couple'.

مثل "a few" أو "a couple".

I can't say "I need another weeks to finish the report"

لا أستطيع أن أقول "I need another weeks to finish the report"

because 'weeks' is plural and it's countable.

لأن "weeks" هي صيغة الجمع وهي معدودة.

But I can say

لكن يمكنني القول

"I need another two weeks to finish the report"

"I need another two weeks to finish the report" "أحتاج إلى أسبوعين آخرين لإنهاء التقرير"

or "I need another couple of weeks to finish the report"

أو "I need another couple of weeks to finish the report" "أحتاج إلى بضع أسابيع أخرى لإنهاء التقرير"

Got it?

Now the other way to use these words is to use them as

أفهمتم؟

الآن الطريقة الأخرى لاستخدام هاتين الكلمتين هي استخدامهما

pronouns. So again, 'another' can only be used with

كضمائر. لذلك مرة أخرى، يمكن استخدام "another" فقط مع

singular countable nouns.

الاسماء المفردة القابل للعد.

I'm going to order a drink. Would you like another?

I'm going to order a drink. Would you like another? سأقوم بطلب شراب. هل تريد آخر؟

So in this sentence 'another' is replacing the noun 'drink'

لذا في هذه الجملة فإن "another" هي بديلة للاسم "شراب"

but remember, I can only use 'another' here

ولكن تذكروا، لا يمكنني استخدام سوى "another" هنا

because we're talking about a singular drink

لأننا نتحدث عن مشروب واحد

not multiple drinks.

لا مشروبات متعددة.

And guess what? There aren't any exceptions here.

وتخيلوا ماذا؟ لا توجد أي استثناءات هنا.

'Another' is just used as a singular pronoun.

"another" تستخدم فقط كضمير للمفرد.

Now you'll see 'other' used as a pronoun too.

الآن سترى "other" تستخدم كضمير أيضًا.

You can use it when you're talking about two things

يمكنك استخدامه عندما تتحدث عن شيئين

and the first thing has already been mentioned.

والشيء الأول سبق ذكره.

So for example. My first wish is to go to Alaska.

هكذا على سبيل المثال. أمنيتي الأولى هي الذهاب إلى ألاسكا.

The other is to see the Northern Lights.

والأخرى هو أن أرى الأنوار الشمالية.

So 'other' is acting as a noun here, it's a pronoun

لذا فإن"other" تتصرف كاسم هنا، إنها ضمير

replacing 'wish'.

تحل محل كلمة "wish".

And it's okay to do this because it's clear

و لا بأس في القيام بذلك لأن ما نتحدث

what we're talking about, we already mentioned that the

عنه واضح، فقد سبق وذكرنا بالفعل أن

first wish was I want to go to Alaska

الأمنية الأولى هي أنني أريد أن أذهب إلى ألاسكا

so when we use the 'other',

لذلك عندما نستخدم "other"،

we're obviously referring to 'wish'

فنحن نشير بوضوح إلى "أمنية"

but there is something that you need to keep in mind.

ولكن هناك شيء تحتاج إلى تذكره.

As a pronoun, 'other' can be singular or plural.

كضمير، يمكن لـ "other" أن يكون مفردًا أو جمعًا

Now remember when I was talking about 'other'

أتذكرون عندما كنت أتحدث عن "other"

as a determiner, I said it can't be plural.

كمحدد، قلت أنه لا يمكن أن تكون جمعًا.

But you will see a plural form and that's when it's used

ولكنكم سترون صيغة الجمع وهذا عندما يتم استخدامه

as a pronoun.

So let's look at a couple of examples.

Part of the group has already arrived.

لقد وصل جزء من المجموعة مسبقـًا.

The others will be here very soon.

Today we tried three traditional foods.

Tomorrow we'll try three others.

So are you feeling a little more confident

Choose 'other' or 'another'.

So we know that the word has to replace the noun

'movie', right?

Meaning an additional or a different movie.

وهذا يعني فيلم إضافي أو مختلف.

So we need to choose a pronoun for a singular

لذلك نحن بحاجة إلى اختيار ضمير للاسم

countable noun, it must be 'another'.

المفرد المعدود، يجب أن يكون "another".

So check out the noun here, it's plural, 'dishes'.

لذلك تحقق من الاسم هنا، انها صيغة الجمع، "الأطباق".

And we can't say 'any' with 'another' right? So

ونحن لا نستطيع أن نقول "any" مع "another"، أليس كذلك؟ وبالتالي

'other' is the correct answer.

'Another' is right but what if it was 'types' - plural?

Then it would be 'other'.

So it's a singular countable noun.

So it must be 'another'.

so we need to use 'other'.
