These are the words I often hear from young parents

E-cigarettes, or "vapes," as they are commonly called,

We have a lot of serious concerns about the health impact of vaping,

Even I was very drawn to these very clever devices.

And since I had spent a long time researching teen and adult addictions,

These are very popular, by the way, among teens.

but can also be plugged into a USB outlet to charge.

Many teens do not even think that these are e-cigarettes,

which has led to the use of terms like "juuling" instead of "vaping."

Many of these devices are so discreet and produce so little vapor

Exposure of the teen brain to nicotine through e-cigarettes

The teen brain is very sensitive to even low levels of nicotine

In fact, we have known for a long time

E-cigarettes are not only addictive

but they also affect many other organs in the body.

So nicotine, which is in e-cigarettes, for example,

binds to a receptor called the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor,

which plays a key role in the functioning of almost all organ systems

While there is no doubt that providing smokers with a cleaner form of nicotine

is and should continue to be a critical goal,

we still do not know if these devices help smokers quit smoking,

and we know very little about the long-term effects of these devices.

What we do know is that youth -- lots of youth -- are using these devices.

In fact, the FDA commissioner recently used the term "epidemic"

Do they need so many different kinds of devices?

त्यासाठी इतक्या प्रकारची साधनं लागतात?

Is it a good idea to have devices which are so easy to hide

सहज लपवता येणारी, वापरायला सोपी अशी साधनं उपलब्ध असणं

and so easy to use?

हे चांगलं आहे का?

We recently heard that the FDA plans to introduce stricter regulations

लवकरच FDA असे निर्बंध घालणार आहे.

on sales of these devices that contain e-liquid flavors

इ-द्रव वापरणारी साधनं

in retail locations like convenience stores and gas stations,

दुकानांतून सर्रास विकणं,

and also introduce stricter regulations

on sales of devices to minors over the internet.

Is this going to be sufficient to change this rapid increase in youth uptake?

just because it is technology and because it is the latest thing.

तर केवळ ते नवं आहे, म्हणून.

More and more over the next few years and for the rest of our lives,

पुढल्या काही वर्षांत, किंवा आपल्या उर्वरित आयुष्यात,

we are going to see technologies coming into the marketplace

नवं तंत्रज्ञान बाजारात येण्याचं प्रमाण वाढत जाणार आहे.

that may not raise any health flags at first,

कदाचित त्यातल्या धोक्यांची सूचना ठळकपणे मिळणार नाही.

simply because they don't look unhealthy

कारण ते दिसायला तितकं घातक नसेल, किंवा

or they're not a medical device.

आरोग्याशी त्याचा प्रत्यक्ष संबंध नसेल.

For example, we could see devices

उदाहरणार्थ, नव्या साधनांमुळे

that may make it easier to go longer without sleep

दीर्घकाळ झोपेशिवाय राहणं,

or help us lose weight --

वजन घटवणं

a personal goal of mine --

or achieve any number of other goals

अशी ध्येयं साध्य करता येतील.

that we as consumers are very, very interested in.

ही ध्येयं ग्राहकांना आकर्षक वाटतील.

But many of these devices may come with unacceptable risks to our own health.

पण यातली अनेक साधनं आरोग्याला हानिकारक असतील.

So if we want to protect our health and the health of our children,

आपलं आणि आपल्या मुलांचं आरोग्य सुरक्षित राखायचं असेल, तर

perhaps we should get out of the habit

नवीन तंत्रज्ञान कौतुकाने वापरण्याची आपली सवय

of automatically celebrating such new technology

आपल्याला मोडावी लागेल.

and get into the habit of looking at them with a critical eye,

त्याऐवजी त्याच्याकडे वैद्यकशास्त्राच्या चिकित्सक दृष्टीने

perhaps even through a medical lens.

पाहावं लागेल.

Because, you know something?

कारण..

Our health, the health of our children and our future generations

आपलं, आपल्या मुलांचं, आणि आपल्या पुढल्या पिढ्यांचं आरोग्य फार मौल्यवान आहे.

is far too valuable to let it go up in smoke --

ते आपण धुरामधून किंवा एरोसोलमधून

or even in aerosol.
