I've been trying to figure out what I was going to say here for months.

And so I searched and searched for days on end,

I could bullet point the big ideas that I wanted to share about Me Too

and this movement that I founded,

I kept finding myself falling short of finding the heart.

진심에 다가서기엔 부족해 보였습니다.

I wanted to pour myself into this moment

저는 이 순간에 완전히 몰입해서

and tell you why even the possibility of healing or interrupting sexual violence

성폭력의 상처를 치료하고 폭력을 멈출 수 있다는 가능성이

was worth standing and fighting for.

어째서 일어나 싸울만한 가치가 있는 일인지 말씀드리려 합니다.

I wanted to rally you to your feet with an uplifting speech

생존자들의 존엄성과 인간성을 위한 투쟁의 중요성에 대하여

about the important work of fighting for the dignity and humanity of survivors.

고무적인 강연을 해서 결집을 돕고 싶은데

But I don't know if I have it.

그런 강연을 할 수 있을지 모르겠네요.

The reality is,

현실은 이렇습니다.

after soldiering through the Supreme Court nomination process

대법관 임명 절차 동안 있었던

and attacks from the White House,

백악관의 공격과

gross mischaracterizations,

무례하고 잘못된 묘사,

internet trolls

악플러들의 공격을 헤쳐나와

and the rallies and marches

집회와 행진에서

and heart-wrenching testimonies,

가슴 찢어지는 증언들을 들은 뒤

I'm faced with my own hard truth.

저는 냉엄한 진실을 마주했습니다.

I'm numb.

저는 무감각했습니다.

And I'm not surprised.

놀라운 일은 아니었지요.

I've traveled all across the world giving talks,

전 세계를 돌아다니며 강연을 했는데

and like clockwork, after every event,

매 행사마다

more than one person approaches me

꼭 몇명씩 저를 찾아와

so that they can say their piece in private.

개인적으로 이야기를 하고싶어 했어요.

And I always tried to reassure them.

저는 그분들에게 확신을 주려고 했습니다.

You know, I'd give them local resources

지역 시설을 소개시켜 주고

and a soft reassurance that they're not alone

그분들은 혼자가 아니며, 이 운동은 그들의 운동이기도 하다는

and this is their movement, too.

확신을 드리려고 했습니다.

I'd tell them that we're stronger together

함께하면 더 강해진다는 사실과

and that this is a movement of survivors and advocates

이 운동을 통해 생존자들과 그 지지자들이

doing things big and small every day.

매일 크고 작은 일을 하고 있다고 말씀드렸습니다.

And more and more people are joining this movement

이 운동에 동참하는 사람은

every single day.

나날이 늘어가고 있습니다,

That part is clear.

그 사실은 명확하지요.

People are putting their bodies on the line

자신이 위태로워질 수 있음에도

and raising their voices to say, "Enough is enough."

사람들은 목소리를 높여 "더 이상은 안된다"고 합니다.

So why do I feel this way?

그런데 왜 무감각하냐고요?

Well ...

글쎄요.

Someone with credible accusations of sexual violence against him

신빙성 있는 성폭력 혐의자가

was confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United States of America,

미합중국의 대법관으로 임명되었기 때문입니다.

again.

또 다시요.

The US President,

미국 대통령은

who was caught on tape talking about how he can grab women's body parts

여성의 몸을 마음대로 어디든지 만질 수 있다고 말한

wherever he wants, however he wants,

녹음 음성이 발각되고도

can call a survivor a liar at one of his rallies,

집회에서 생존자를 거짓말장이라고 부를 수 있으며

and the crowds will roar.

군중들은 함성을 지를 겁니다.

And all across the world, where Me Too has taken off,

미투 운동이 일어난 세계 어디든

Australia and France,

호주와 프랑스,

Sweden, China and now India,

스웨덴, 중국, 인도에서까지

survivors of sexual violence are all at once being heard

성폭력 생존자들은 법정에 서서

and then vilified.

비난을 받습니다.

And I've read article after article bemoaning ...

부유한 백인 남성들은

wealthy white men

그들이 저지른 끔찍한 행동이 발각되고서도

who have landed softly with their golden parachutes,

거액의 퇴직금을 받고 조용히 물러난다며

following the disclosure of their terrible behavior.

비탄하는 기사들을 읽었습니다.

And we're asked to consider their futures.

그리고선 그 사람들의 미래를 고려해 달라고 하죠.

But what of survivors?

하지만 생존자들은 어떤가요?

This movement is constantly being called a watershed moment,

이 운동은 여전히 분수령 혹은

or even a reckoning,

심판이라고까지 일컬어지는데도

but I wake up some days feeling like all evidence points to the contrary.

어떤 때는 모든 증거들이 그 반대를 가리키고 있다고 느끼기도 합니다.

It's hard not to feel numb.

무심해지지 않기란 어렵습니다.

I suspect some of you may feel numb, too.

여러분들도 그러신지 모르겠네요.

But let me tell you what else I know.

제가 아는 다른 이야기를 말씀드리겠습니다.

Sometimes when you hear the word "numb,"

여러분이 "무감각하다"라는 말을 들으면

you think of a void, an absence of feelings,

아무 감정이 없는

or even the inability to feel.

느끼지도 못하는 상태를 떠올리시지요.

But that's not always true.

하지만 늘 그런 것만은 아닙니다.

Numbness can come from those memories that creep up in your mind

한밤중에 어떤 기억이 마음속으로 스멀스멀 올라와

that you can't fight off in the middle of the night.

물리치지 못할 때에도 무감각함은 생깁니다.

They can come from the tears that are locked behind your eyes

울지 않으려고 눈물을 삼켜둘 때에도

that you won't give yourself permission to cry.

무감각함은 생깁니다

For me, numbness comes from looking in the face of survivors

저는 생존자들의 얼굴을 마주하고

and knowing everything to say

어떤 말을 해야할지 아는데도

but having nothing left to give.

더이상 줄 것이 없을 때도 무덤덤해집니다.

It's measuring the magnitude of this task ahead of you

여러분 앞에 놓인 문제의 거대함과

versus your own wavering fortitude.

여러분의 흔들리는 용기를 가늠하는 것이죠.

Numbness is not always the absence of feeling.

무감각이 항상 감정이 없는 상태는 아닙니다.

Sometimes it's an accumulation of feelings.

감정이 쌓여있어서 그렇기도 합니다.

And as survivors,

생존자로서 우리는 종종

we often have to hold the truth of what we experience.

우리가 경험한 진실을 감당해야 할 때가 있습니다.

But now, we're all holding something,

하지만 지금 우리는 무언가를

whether we want to or not.

원하든 아니든 짊어져야 하죠.

Our colleagues are speaking up and speaking out,

동료들은 고발하고

industries across the board are reexamining workplace culture,

산업 전반에서 직장 문화를 재검토합니다.

and families and friends are having hard conversations

가족과 친구들은 진실을 짊어지는 일에 대하여

about closely held truths.

어려운 대화를 나눕니다.

Everybody is impacted.

모든 사람에게 영향을 주기에

And then, there's the backlash.

반발도 따릅니다.

We've all heard it.

다들 들어보셨을 겁니다.

"The Me Too Movement is a witch hunt."

"미투 운동은 마녀사냥이야."

Right?

맞나요?

"Me Too is dismantling due process."

"미투 운동은 정당한 법 질서를 무너뜨려."

Or, "Me Too has created a gender war."

혹은, "미투 운동이 성별 전쟁을 일으켰어."

The media has been consistent with headline after headline

언론은 끈질기게 헤드라인을 내놓으며

that frames this movement in ways that make it difficult

미투 운동을 발전시키지 못하도록

to move our work forward,

틀에 가두고

and right-wing pundits and other critics

우익 인사들과 비평가들은

have these talking points that shift the focus away from survivors.

대화의 초점을 생존자들에게서 앗아갑니다.

So suddenly, a movement that was started to support

그래서 어느 순간엔

all survivors of sexual violence

성폭력 생존자들을 지지하려고 시작한 운동을

is being talked about like it's a vindictive plot against men.

남성을 향한 보복 음모라고 이야기하죠.

And I'm like, "Huh?"

"네?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

How did we get here?

어떻게 여기까지 온 거죠?

We have moved so far away

우리는 너무 멀어졌습니다.

from the origins of this movement that started a decade ago,

10년 전 시작했던 이 운동의 기원으로부터

or even the intentions of the hashtag that started just a year ago,

일 년 전에 시작한 해시태그의 출발로부터도요.

that sometimes, the Me Too movement that I hear some people talk about

어떤 사람들이 이야기하는 미투 운동은

is unrecognizable to me.

도저히 몰라볼 정도입니다.

But be clear:

확실하게 합시다.

This is a movement about the one in four girls

이 운동은 4명 중 1명의 소녀와

and the one in six boys

6명 중 1명의 소년을 위한 것입니다.

who are sexually assaulted every year

매년 그만큼의 아이들이 성폭력을 당하고

and carry those wounds into adulthood.

그 상처를 성인이 되어서도 지니고 살아야 하죠.

It's about the 84 percent of trans women who will be sexually assaulted this year

트랜스젠더 여성 중 84% 정도가 올 한 해 성폭력을 당하고

and the indigenous women

원주민 여성은 다른 어떤 그룹보다

who are three-and-a-half times more likely to be sexually assaulted

3.5배나 더 성폭력을 당할

than any other group.

가능성이 높다고 합니다.

Or people with disabilities,

장애가 있는 사람들은

who are seven times more likely to be sexually abused.

7배는 더 성학대를 당할 가능성이 높습니다.

It's about the 60 percent of black girls like me

저같은 흑인 소녀 중 60%는

who will be experiencing sexual violence before they turn 18,

열여덟이 되기도 전에 성폭력을 경험할 겁니다.

and the thousands and thousands of low-wage workers

수천 명의 저임금 노동자들은

who are being sexually harassed right now

지금 이 순간에도 직장에서 성추행을 당하는데

on jobs that they can't afford to quit.

그 직장을 그만둘 형편도 되지 못합니다.

This is a movement about the far-reaching power of empathy.

이 운동은 광범위한 공감의 힘에 대해 말합니다.

And so it's about the millions and millions of people

수백만의 사람들이

who, one year ago, raised their hands to say, "Me too,"

"미투"라고 하려고 손을 들었는데

and their hands are still raised

아직도 그 손을 내리지 못했습니다.

while the media that they consume erases them

그들이 구독하는 언론은 그 사람들을 지워버리고

and politicians who they elected to represent them

그들을 대변하라고 뽑은 정치인들은

pivot away from solutions.

해법에서 돌아섰기 때문입니다.

It's understandable that the push-pull of this unique, historical moment

이 고유하고 역사적인 순간에 끌고 당기는 감정의 롤러코스터가

feels like an emotional roller-coaster that has rendered many of us numb.

많은 사람을 무감각하게 만드는 것도 당연합니다.

This accumulation of feelings

세계적으로 우리 모두가 느끼고 있는

that so many of us are experiencing together, across the globe,

이 축적된 감정은

is collective trauma.

집합적인 트라우마가 됩니다.

But ...

하지만...

it is also the first step

이는 우리가 원하는 세상을 지금 바로 활발하게 만들 수 있는

towards actively building a world that we want right now.

첫걸음이기도 합니다.

What we do with this thing that we're all holding

우리 모두가 짊어지고 있는 이 증거를 통해

is the evidence that this is bigger than a moment.

우리가 하려는 일은 순간을 넘어서는 큰 일입니다.

It's the confirmation that we are in a movement.

움직이고 있다는 확신이죠.

And the most powerful movements

영향력이 큰 운동들은

have always been built around what's possible,

지금 현재만을 주장한 것이 아니라

not just claiming what is right now.

가능성 위에 지어진 것입니다.

Trauma halts possibility.

트라우마는 가능성을 멈추지만

Movement activates it.

운동은 가능성을 활발하게 합니다.

Dr. King famously quoted Theodore Parker saying,

마틴 루터 킹 박사가 인용한 테오도르 파커의 말입니다.

"The arc of the moral universe is long, and it bends toward justice."

"도덕계의 활은 길고 정의를 향해 굽어 있다."

We've all heard this quote.

모두 들어보셨을 겁니다.

But somebody has to bend it.

누군가는 그 활을 구부려야 합니다.

The possibility that we create in this movement and others

이러한 운동으로 우리는 그 활에 무게를 실어

is the weight leaning that arc in the right direction.

옳은 방향으로 굽힐 수 있으리라는 가능성을 봅니다.

Movements create possibility,

운동은 가능성을 만들어냅니다.

and they are built on vision.

그리고 그 비전 위에 지어지지요.

My vision for the Me Too Movement

미투 운동을 바라보는 저의 비전

is a part of a collective vision to see a world free of sexual violence,

성폭력이 없는 세상을 원하는 공통의 비전이기도 합니다.

and I believe we can build that world.

우리는 그 세상을 만들 수 있으리라고 믿습니다.

Full stop.

성폭력이 완전히 멈춘 세상을요.

But in order to get there,

하지만 그렇게 만들려면

we have to dramatically shift a culture that propagates the idea

취약함이 동의라는 생각과

that vulnerability is synonymous with permission

신체 자율권은 기본권이 아니라는 생각을 전파하는 문화를

and that bodily autonomy is not a basic human right.

급격하게 변화시켜야 합니다.

In other words, we have to dismantle the building blocks of sexual violence:

켜켜이 쌓인 성폭력의 더미를 부숴 넘어뜨려야 하지요.

power and privilege.

그 힘과 특권을요.

So much of what we hear about the Me Too Movement

미투 운동이라고 들리는 이야기에는 대부분

is about individual bad actors or depraved, isolated behavior,

악하고 부패한 배우들이 나오기 때문에

and it fails to recognize

권력자가 그들의 특권으로

that anybody in a position of power comes with privilege,

힘없는 약자들을

and it renders those without that power

더욱 취약하게 만드는 상황을

more vulnerable.

알아채기가 힘듭니다.

Teachers and students, coaches and athletes,

선생님과 학생, 코치와 선수,

law enforcement and citizen, parent and child:

사법 권력과 시민, 부모와 아이들

these are all relationships that can have an incredible imbalance of power.

이 모든 관계에도 권력의 엄청난 불균형이 생길 수 있습니다.

But we reshape that imbalance by speaking out against it in unison

그러나 우리는 목소리를 합치함으로써 그 불균형을 바꾸고

and by creating spaces to speak truth to power.

권력에 대항하여 진실을 말할 가능성을 만들 겁니다.

We have to reeducate ourselves and our children

자신과 아이들을 재교육해서

to understand that power and privilege doesn't always have to destroy and take --

권력과 특권은 파괴와 박탈을 위한 것만이 아니라

it can be used to serve and build.

봉사와 건설적인 일에 쓰일 수 있다는 것을 이해시켜야 합니다.

And we have to reeducate ourselves to understand that, unequivocally,

모든 인류에게는 인간성에 손상을 입지 않고

every human being has the right to walk through this life

자신의 인생을 살아갈 권리가 있다는 사실을

with their full humanity intact.

명백히 받아들이도록 재교육해야 합니다.

Part of the work of the Me Too Movement

미투 운동에는

is about the restoration of that humanity for survivors,

생존자들의 인간성을 복구하려는 임무도 있습니다.

because the violence doesn't end with the act.

폭력이란 행동에서 끝나는 것이 아닌

The violence is also the trauma that we hold after the act.

그 뒤에 우리가 짊어질 충격까지가 폭력입니다.

Remember, trauma halts possibility.

트라우마는 가능성을 멈춥니다.

It serves to impede,

가능성을 늦추고

stagnate, confuse and kill.

침체, 혼란시켜서 결국엔 없애버립니다.

So our work rethinks how we deal with trauma.

그렇기에 우리는 트라우마를 다루는 방법을 재고합니다.

For instance, we don't believe

예를 들면 우리는

that survivors should tell the details of their stories all the time.

생존자들이 꼭 자신의 이야기를 자세히 말할 필요는 없다고 생각합니다.

We shouldn't have to perform our pain over and over again

우리의 알 권리를 이유로

for the sake of your awareness.

계속해서 고통을 재연할 필요가 없습니다.

We also try to teach survivors to not lean into their trauma,

우리는 또한 생존자들이 상처를 수용하지 않도록 가르치려 합니다.

but to lean into the joy that they curate in their lives instead.

상처 대신 인생에서 생겨날 기쁨을 받아들이라고요.

And if you don't find it, create it and lean into that.

그 기쁨을 찾을 수 없다면 만들어서라도 받아들이라고요.

But when your life has been touched by trauma,

트라우마를 겪고 난 뒤

sometimes trying to find joy feels like an insurmountable task.

기쁨을 느끼기란 극복 불가한 과제처럼 느껴질 수 있습니다.

Now imagine trying to complete that task

이제 그 과제를 풀려고 하는 것입니다.

while world leaders are discrediting your memories

세상의 지도자들이 여러분의 기억을 신빙성 없게 만들고

or the news media keeps erasing your experience,

언론은 계속하여 여러분의 경험을 지우며

or people continuously reduce you to your pain.

사람들이 여러분의 고통을 사소하게 만들고 있지만요.

Movement activates possibility.

운동은 가능성을 살립니다.

There's folklore in my family, like most black folks,

많은 흑인 가족에게 그렇듯 우리 가족에는 전해지는 이야기가 있습니다.

about my great-great-grandaddy, Lawrence Ware.

고조부이신 로렌스 웨어에 대한 이야기입니다.

He was born enslaved,

자신도 노예로 태어나셨고

his parents were enslaved,

부모님도 노예였지요.

and he had no reason to believe that a black man in America

미국에서 흑인은 당연히

wouldn't die a slave.

노예로 죽는 거라 믿으셨습니다.

And yet,

그럼에도

legend has it that when he was freed by his enslavers,

이야기에 따르면 고조부께선 노예에서 풀려나셨을 때

he walked from Georgia to South Carolina

조지아에서 사우스캐롤라이나까지 걸어가셨다고 합니다.

so that he could find the wife and child that he was separated from.

헤어진 처자식을 찾으시려고요.

And every time I hear this story, I think to myself,

이야기를 들을 때마다 생각합니다.

"How could he do this?

"어떻게 그런 일을 해내셨을까?

Wasn't he afraid that he would be captured and killed by white vigilantes,

백인 자경단들에게 붙잡혀 죽을지도 모르는데 두렵지 않으셨을까?

or he would get there and they would be gone?"

도착하고도 가족을 못 찾을 수도 있는데?"

And so I asked my grandmother once

한번은 할머니께

why she thought that he took this journey up,

고조부께서 그 길을 택한 이유가 뭐라고 생각하시는지 여쭤봤습니다.

and she said,

할머니께선

"I guess he had to believe it was possible."

"가능성을 믿을 수밖에 없었겠지" 라고 하셨죠.

I have been propelled by possibility for most of my life.

제 인생의 대부분은 가능성의 힘을 받아서 온 것입니다.

I am here because somebody, starting with my ancestors,

제 선조들부터 누군가가

believed I was possible.

제 가능성을 믿었기에 여기에 있는 것이죠.

In 2006, 12 years ago,

12년 전 2006년에 저는

I laid across a mattress on my floor in my one-bedroom apartment,

침실 하나짜리 아파트 바닥 위 매트리스에 가로누워

frustrated with all the sexual violence that I saw in my community.

공동체에서 목격한 성폭력에 좌절했습니다.

I pulled out a piece of paper, and I wrote "Me Too" on the top of it,

저는 종이 한 장을 꺼내 그 위에 "미투"라고 썼습니다.

and I proceeded to write out an action plan

생존자들의 공감에 기반한 운동을 만들기 위해

for building a movement based on empathy between survivors

행동 계획을 써갔습니다.

that would help us feel like we can heal,

우리가 회복할 수 있으며

that we weren't the sum total of the things that happened to us.

우리에게 일어난 사건만이 전부가 아니라는 공감을 통해서요.

Possibility is a gift, y'all.

가능성은 선물입니다, 여러분.

It births new worlds,

가능성은 새로운 세상과

and it births visions.

비전을 낳습니다.

I know some of y'all are tired,

몇몇 분들은 지치셨다는 걸 압니다.

because I'm tired.

저도 그러니까요.

I'm exhausted,

저는 기진맥진하고

and I'm numb.

무덤덤합니다.

Those who came before us didn't win every fight,

우리 전의 사람들은 모든 투쟁에서 이기진 못했지만

but they didn't let it kill their vision.

그들의 꿈이 사그라들게 두지는 않았습니다.

It fueled it.

불을 붙였지요.

So I can't stop,

그래서 저는 멈출 수 없습니다.

and I'm asking you not to stop either.

여러분께서도 멈추지 마시길 부탁드립니다.

We owe future generations a world free of sexual violence.

우리에겐 성폭력이 없는 세상을 다음 세대에게 물려줄 책임이 있으니까요.

I believe we can build that world.

그 세상을 만들 수 있다고 믿습니다.
