Some years ago, I was visiting Paris

When I was there, a man bought a pair of sticks for 10 euros,

I know the right trick to make the giant bubbles

is the right soapy water mixture itself --

not the sticks,

which may be needed,

but you can easily make them at home.

Focusing on the sticks makes us not see that the real tool is the bubble itself.

Bubbles might seem like something just children make while playing,

but sometimes it can be really stunning.

정말로 아름답기도 합니다.

However, there are more fascinating science to bubbles,

such as problem-solving tools.

So I would like to share with you

a few stories about the science of creating bubbles

and the science of eliminating the microscopic ones.

Since it's up on the screen, let's start with the soap bubble.

It is made from very common substances:

air, water, soap, in the right mixture.

공기, 물, 비누를 정확하게 섞은 혼합물이죠.

You can see soap bubbles constantly changing their colors.

비누방울 색이 계속해서 바뀌는 것이 보이실 거예요.

This is due to the interaction with light at various directions

이는 빛이 비누방울 표면에서 산란하기 때문인데

and the changes of their thickness.

표면의 두께 변화에 따른 것입니다.

One of the common substances, water molecules,

흔한 물질중 하나인 물분자는

are formed by two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen -- H2O.

수소원자 두 개와 산소원자 하나로 이루어져 H2O가 되는데요.

On most surfaces, water droplets tend to curve inwards,

대부분의 물방울 표면에서는 안으로 끌어당기는 힘이 작용하여

forming a semihemisphere shape.

반구모양을 만들어 냅니다.

This is because the water droplet's surface is like an elastic sheet.

이것이 물방울 표면이 탄성박판 같은 성질을 갖는 이유입니다.

The water molecule on the surface is constantly being pulled inwards

물방울 표면에 물분자는 가운데 있는 물분자에 의해

by the molecule at the center.

계속해서 안쪽으로 당기는 힘을 받습니다.

And the quality of the elasticity is what we call "surface tension."

그리고 이러한 형태의 탄성을 우리는 "표면장력"이라고 합니다.

Now by adding soap,

여기에 비누를 섞으면

what happens is the soap molecule reduces the surface tension of water,

비누분자가 물방울 표면의 장력을 약하게 만들어

making it more elastic and easier to form bubbles.

더욱 탄력있고, 쉽게 방울 모양을 이루게 합니다.

You can think of a bubble as a mathematical problem-solver.

비누방울을 수학적 문제 해결도구로 사용할 수도 있습니다.

You see it relentlessly trying to achieve geometry perfection.

잘 보시면 물방울은 기하학적으로 완벽한 모양을 지속하고 있습니다.

For instance, a sphere is the shape with the least surface area

for a given volume.

That's why a single bubble is always in the shape of a sphere.

This is a single bubble.

When two bubbles touch each other,

they can save materials by sharing a common wall.

That is surface tension at work,

Now, let me give you another example.

My question is: What is the shortest length to connect these four cities?

Let's find out the answer by dipping it into the soapy water.

Remember, the soap bubble forms will always try to minimize

their surface area

with a perfect geometry arrangement.

So the solution might not be something you expected.

The soap bubble forms will always try to minimize their surface area

Now, let us look at bubbles in another perspective.

My daughter, Zoe, loves visiting zoos.

제 딸 조이는 동물원에 가는 것을 아주 좋아합니다.

Her favorite spot is Penguin Cove at Marwell Zoo in Southern England,

where she could see penguins swim at speed under the water.

펭귄들이 물속으로 빠르게 헤엄치는 모습을 볼 수 있는 곳입니다.

One day, she noticed that the body of penguins

leaves a trail of bubbles when they swim

몸에서 물방울이 지나가는 것을 보고

and asked why.

왜 그런지 물었습니다.

Animals and birds like penguins

펭귄과 같은 조류는

that spend a lot of their time under the water

정말 많은 시간을 물 속에서 보내면서

have evolved an ingenious way of utilizing the capability of bubbles

물방울을 보관하여 물의 밀도를

to reduce the density of water.

줄이는 영리한 방법을 익히도록 진화하였습니다.

Emperor penguins are thought to be able to dive a few hundred meters

황제 펭귄은 해수면에서 수백미터까지 잠수하는 법을 익힙니다.

below the sea surface.

They are thought to store the air under their feathers

before they dive

and then progressively release it as a cloud of bubbles.

This reduces the density of water surrounding them,

making it easier to swim through

This feature has been noticed by the ship manufacturers.

I am talking about the big ships here,

the ones that are used to transport thousands of containers across the ocean.

Recently, they developed a system called "air lubricating system,"

inspired by the penguins.

In this system, they produce a lot of air bubbles

and redistribute them across the whole of the ship,

like an air carpet that reduces the water resistance

when a ship is moving.

This feature cuts off the energy consumption for the ship

Bubbles can also be used for medicines.

It can also play a role in medicines,

for instance, as a method for noninvasive delivery systems for drugs and genes

to a specific part of the body.

Imagine a microbubble

filled with a mixture of drugs and magnetic agents

being injected into our bloodstream.

혈액 속으로 주사하는 것입니다.

The bubbles will move to the target areas.

방울들은 몸 속에 목표부위로 이동하는데요.

But how do they know where to go?

어떻게 어디로 가야 할지를 알 수 있을까요?

Because we placed a magnet there.

우리가 자성 물질을 넣었기 때문이죠.

For instance, this part of my hand.

예를 들어, 손에 이 부분에 약을 투여한다고 하면

When the microbubbles move to this part of my hand,

여기 손까지 이동한 초미세방울을

we can pop it via ultrasound

초음파를 활용하여 터뜨리면

and release the drug exactly where it's needed.

정확하게 필요한 곳에 약을 투여할 수 있게 됩니다.

Now, I mentioned about the science of creating bubbles.

지금까지는 방울을 만들기에 관련된 과학 원리에 대해 이야기 해보았는데요.

But sometimes we also need to remove them.

때로는 방울을 제거해야 할 때도 있습니다.

That's actually part of my job.

이것이 제 일의 일부이기도 합니다.

My exact job title is "ink formulation scientist."

제 정확한 직업명은 "잉크 제제 학자"입니다.

But I don't work on the ink that you use for your writing pens.

그렇지만 여러분들이 종이에 쓰는 그런 잉크에 대한 일을 하지는 않고요.

I'm working on some cool applications

저는 좀 멋진 것들, 그러니까

such as organic photovoltaics, OPVs,

유기태양전지(OPV)와 같은 장치를 가지고 일을 합니다.

and organic light-emitting diodes, OLEDs.

그리고 유기발광다이오드 즉, OLED와 같은 장치를 다룹니다.

Part of my job is to figure out how and why we want to remove the bubbles

제 일의 일부는 저희 회사에서 만드는 잉크에서 왜 그리고 어떻게

잉크에서 방울을 제거하는지 밝혀내는 것 입니다.

from the ink that my company produces.

During the formulation-mixing process,

배합과정 중

or preparation process,

이를 준비하는 단계에서

we mix active ingredients, solvents and additives

유효 성분에 용제와 첨가물을 넣습니다.

in order to achieve the formulations with the properties we want

저희가 원하는 물질을 사용하여 원하는 제제의 잉크를 만들어

when the ink is being used.

사용하기 위한 방법입니다.

But just like you would make drinks

그러나 여러분들이 음료나

or bake cakes,

케이크를 만들 때처럼

it is unavoidable that some air bubbles will be trapped inside that ink.

어쩔 수 없이 잉크 속으로 소량의 공기 방울이 들어가게 됩니다.

Here, we are talking about a different space

우리가 이야기 하는 잉크 속 공간은 분명

from the bubbles I'd seen in Paris.

파리에서 비누방울을 날리던 공간과는 매우 다릅니다.

The bubbles that are trapped inside those inks

이 공기방울은 잉크 속

vary between a few millimeters,

몇 밀리미터 사이나

a few microns

몇 마이크론 사이

or even a few nanometers in size.

또는 몇 나노미터 사이로 들어갑니다.

And what we are concerned about

그렇게 내부로 들어간 소량의

is the oxygen and the moisture that is trapped inside.

산소나 수분이 저희의 걱정거리입니다.

At this size scale, removing them is not easy.

이 정도 크기에서는 이들을 제거하는 것이 쉽지 않습니다.

But it matters,

그럼에도 여러가지 문제를 일으킵니다.

for instance, for organic light-emitting diodes inks

예를 들어, 유기발광 다이오드 잉크는

that we can use to produce display for your smartphone, for example.

여러분들의 스마트폰 화면을 만드는데 쓰입니다.

It's supposed to last for many years,

몇 년 동안 문제 없이 쓸 수 있는 이 화면도

but if the ink that we use has been absorbed with oxygen and moisture

잉크에 산소나 수분이 유입되고

[which] are not being removed,

이를 제거하지 못하면

then we can quickly see dark spots appear in the pixels.

금새 픽셀에 검은 점들이 보이게 됩니다.

Now, one challenge we face in removing the microbubbles

저희가 이 초미세방울을 제거하는데 직면하는 도전과제는

is that they are not very cooperative.

이 친구들이 그리 협조적이지 않다는데 있습니다.

They like to sit there,

bathing in the ink without moving much.

But how do we kick them out?

One technology we use

한 가지 저희가 사용하는 기술은

is to force the ink going through a thin, long and tiny tube

잉크 속으로 아주 얇고 작은 구멍이 뚫린 튜브를 밀어넣어

with a porous wall,

and we place the tubes inside the vacuum chamber,

이 튜브를 진공 챔버에 넣으면

so that the bubbles can be squeezed out from the ink

잉크에서 이 방울들이 밀려서 나오게 됩니다.

and be removed.

그렇게 제거가 되지요.

Once we manage to remove the bubbles from the ink that we produce,

한 번 저희가 방울들을 겨우 잉크에서 제거하고 나면

it is time for celebration.

축하파티를 할 시간이 됩니다.

Let's open a bubbling champagne.

보글보글한 샴페인을 따 볼까요?

Ooh, this is going to be fun!

You could see a lot of bubbles rushing out from the champagne bottle.

여기 수 많은 거품들이 샴페인 병에서 나오는게 보이시죠.

These are the bubbles filled with carbon dioxide,

이 거품 속에는 이산화탄소,

a gas that's been produced during the fermentation process of the wine.

즉 와인이 숙성되는 과정에서 생기는 기체로 가득차 있습니다.

Let me pour some out.

조금 따라보겠습니다.

I can't miss the chance.

I guess it's enough.

Here, I can see a lot of microbubbles

여기, 수 많은 초미세방울들이

moving from the bottom of the glass to the top of the champagne.

유리잔 바닥에서 샴페인 표면까지 올라오는 것이 보이는군요.

Before it pops,

팡 터지기 전에

it will jet tiny droplets of aroma molecules

이 방울들은 아주 작은 아로마 분자들을 내뿜고

and intensify the flavor of champagne,

샴페인의 풍미를 만들어 내면서

making us enjoy much more the flavor of champagne.

우리가 샴페인 향기를 더욱 풍부하게 느낄 수 있도록 합니다.

As a scientist who is passionate about bubbles,

방울들을 열정적으로 연구하는 과학자로서

I love to play with them,
