So why haven't humans flown yet?

I've been obsessed with learning to fly my whole life.

저는 하늘을 나는 법을 배우려고 제 평생을 바쳤습니다.

I grew up a feral, adopted child on the northern shore of Lake Ontario,

저는 온타리오 호수 북쪽 수변의 자연 속에서 성장했습니다.

following my bricklayer/fisherman father around.

I was always fascinated by things that moved,

catching small animals, holding them in my hands,

thrilled and terrified at its unrelenting force,

accidentally burning my father's barn down --

just once.

That was my first brush with real danger,

그것이 저의 첫 번째 진짜 위험의 경험이었습니다.

the fire and my father.

불과 저의 아버지요.

When I was about eight or nine years old, I caught a fly in a mason jar.

여덟, 아홉 살 때 유리병에 파리를 잡아둔 적이 있는데요.

Studying that fly, I thought, "Wow,

그 파리를 관찰하면서 정말 놀랐어요.

it's changing directions in midair with acute angles,

파리가 허공에서 방향을 정확하게 바꾸는 걸 보고 말이죠.

and it's going so fast, it's a blur.

너무 빨라서 제대로 보이지도 않았죠.

Why can't we do that? Can we?"

왜 우리는 그렇게 할 수 없을까요? 우리도 할 수 있을까요?

Everywhere I looked, there were things moving.

주변을 둘러보면 항상 움직이는 무언가가 있습니다.

And these things moved with their very own causal rhythms,

움직이는 것들은 모두 자신만의 리듬을 가지고 있죠.

their very own mechanistic anatomies.

고유의 기계 해부학적 특징이 있습니다.

It was clear to me -- and to Newton --

너무나 당연한 사실입니다. 뉴턴에게도 그러했듯이요.

that things move based on their component parts:

모든 것은 그것이 움직이도록 하는 구성 요소가 있습니다.

worms squirmed, birds flew, kangaroos hopped.

벌레가 기어가는 것, 새가 나는 것, 캥거루가 뛰는 것 등이요.

And a human's first bout with flying was falling accidentally, tripping,

인간은 실수로 넘어져서 공중에 뜨기도 하고

or slipping on that fabled banana peel.

바나나 껍질을 밟아 미끄러지기도 하죠.

Once your ground is dragged out from under you,

a world of wonder comes rushing in.

I had found my territory.

I was seized with a compulsion,

a primordial urge to learn how to fly,

나는 법을 배우고 싶은 원초적 욕구가 생겼습니다.

like a human.

인간처럼요.

For the next 10 years, I did my experiments alone,

그 후 10년 동안, 혼자서 저만의 실험을 계속해왔습니다.

on my own body.

I drove my Honda 350 across the United States

혼다 350 바이크를 타고 미국을 횡단했습니다.

in an "Easy Rider" kind of way.

I got my degree in modern dance. I mimicked that fly in the box.

현대 무용을 전공해서 상자 속 파리를 흉내내기도 했죠.

I dove horizontally through glass;

유리 창에 수평 자세로 뛰어들며

on the way, I punched a hole in it.

유리를 깨기도 했고요.

I was trying to figure out something about flight.

저는 뭔가 나는 법을 알아내려 노력했습니다.

When I was 27 years old,

27살 때는요.

I found myself in a rat-infested New York City loft,

뉴욕에서 쥐들로 득실거리는 어느 건물 다락에서

getting ready to hurl myself off a ladder.

사다리에서 뛰어내릴 준비를 했죠.

I climbed higher, higher, higher,

더 높이, 더 높이 올라갔죠. 그리고 뛰어내렸습니다,

and I jumped.

Wham-o! I landed.

쾅 소리와 함께 착지했죠.

That hurt.

정말 아팠어요.

(Laughter)

And it occurred to me that people didn't really enjoy getting hurt,

사람들은 다치는 걸 좋아하지 않는다는 걸 그때 깨달았습니다.

and that maybe the reason that we weren't flying yet

is that we were still attached to that false idea

that we would fly the way birds do,

or butterflies.

Maybe we needed to assumption-bust,

to ask a different kind of question --

오히려 다른 걸 고민해야 하죠.

about duration, for instance.

예를 들면 나는 시간이라든지요.

Humans in the air? A few seconds.

인간이 하늘을 날아요? 겨우 몇 초겠죠.

Birds and butterflies? Minutes, maybe hours.

새나 나비는요? 몇 분을 날죠.

아니면 몇 시간 동안요.

And what about fear?

공포감은 또 어떤가요?

I think fear is complex and personal.

공포감은 복잡한 문제고 사람마다 다를 겁니다.

I really think it has to do with curiosity

호기심과 관련 있다고 생각해요.

and not taking yourself so seriously.

그리고 얼마나 심각하게 받아들이는가도 연관 있죠.

We might need to get a little hurt,

조금은 다쳐도 됩니다.

just not too hurt.

많이는 말고요.

And pain: redefine it.

아프다는 말도 재정의해야 합니다.

Rather than "pain," say, "another rather interesting, foreign sensation."

'아픔'이라고 쓰기보다 '흥미로운 낯선 느낌'이라고 하죠.

Something like that.

뭐 그런 식으로요.

I realized then that to learn to fly, we were going to have to learn to land.

저는 날기 위해서는 착지하는 법부터 배워야 한다는 걸 깨달았습니다.

My hero, Evel Knievel -- one of them -- said,

제가 존경하는 이블 크니블도 이런 말을 했죠.

"Anyone can jump a motorcycle.

"오토바이 점프는 누구나 할 수 있죠.

The trouble begins when you try to land it."

그런데 문제는 착지 때 일어납니다."

Landing hurts.

착지는 아픕니다.

I was curious, though.

저는 그것이 궁금했어요. 이런 생각이 들었죠.

I thought, "Well, why don't we invent an impact technique?

"충격 흡수 기술을 개발하면 되잖아?"

Why don't we just expand our base of support?"

"착지하는 부분을 넓히면 되지 않을까?"

I had seen pieces of plywood fall,

합판이 넘어지는 걸 보면 넘어지며 주춤하는 게 없죠.

and they didn't flinch on the way down.

So I made my body into a perfect line

그래서 저도 몸을 직선으로 곧게 펴고

and tilted back.

뒤로 기울여 넘어졌습니다.

Whaft!

와!

It was a totally different sound than "wham-o."

"쿵!" 소리와는 전혀 달랐어요.

And I rushed out onto the streets of New York City

저는 뉴욕의 거리로 뛰어나갔습니다.

and went up to complete strangers,

그리고 처음 보는 사람에게 이렇게 말했죠.

and I said -- well, I thought --

"I did a backfall today. Did you?"

In 1985, we started to tour all over the world a little bit,

and I started my company,

called STREB EXTREME ACTION.

In 2003, we were invited to go to Kitty Hawk

to celebrate the 100th anniversary of flight with the Wright Brothers.

We had gotten very good at landing;

그때 저희는 착지는 정말 잘하던 때였습니다.

now we needed to get up into the air.

이제 하늘을 나는 일만 남았었죠.

And like them, we wanted to stay there longer.

라이트 형제처럼 하늘에서 더 오래 머무르고 싶었습니다.

I came across this quote by Wilbur:

"If you are looking for perfect safety, you will do well to sit on a fence

but if you really wish to learn, you must mount a machine

Ah, machines.

아, 기계였어요.

It incited the hardware junkie inside of me.

And if we did want to go or travel to unhabitual places in space --

to that banana peel spot that confuses us;

to that place outside our vertical comfort zone,

where we encounter unexpected turbulence

and get accelerated oddly,

where the ground changes and moves out from under us --

지면이 발에서 떨어져 움직이는 곳.

like the composer who is trying to hit a note

마치 인간이 낼 수 있는 소리보다 훨씬 높은 음을 찾던 작곡가가

higher than the human voice can sing,

he invents a piccolo or a flute,

피콜로나 플루트를 발명한 것처럼

I set about the invention of my prototypic machines.

저는 저만의 기계를 만들었습니다.

And if we wanted to go higher, faster, sooner, harder,

그리고 더 높이, 더 빨리, 더 힘차게 가길 원한다면

it was necessary that we create our very own spaceships.

우리만의 우주선이 필요했죠.

And we did.

And we did travel to unknown, invisible, dangerous territories,

and it changed us.

In 2012, we brought all of our best machines to London

and put them in their most iconic places.

We got on the London Eye.

It was 443 feet above the earth.

And as we reached the zenith, we unlocked our brake and fell --

200 feet on the radius,

on the spoke that we were attached to.

We reached as far up as heaven that day,

I'm pretty sure of it.

And then I and two of my dancers

walked down the outside of London's City Hall.

As I stood up there, 300 feet above the ground,

and looked down,

I saw 2,000 eyes staring up at me,

and they saw what they usually do -- the sky, a bird, a plane -- and then us.

And we were just a tiny speck up there.

And I realized that action is for everybody.

Now we have our very own mason jar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

It's called SLAM: STREB Lab for Action Mechanics.

"슬램(SLAM)"이라는 곳인데요. 스트렙 동작기계 연구소라는 뜻이죠.

It was a former mustard seed factory.

원래는 겨자씨 가공 공장이었는데요.

And I designed it after the use of a petri dish,

배양 접시를 사용하던 것에 착안해서 구조를 설계했습니다.

and in that petri dish,

그리고 저는 그 배양 접시 안에 아이들의 행동을 담았습니다.

I put Kid Action, STREB EXTREME ACTION

스트텝 익스트림 액션과 서커스 예술을 담았죠.

and circus arts,

and we all learned to fly, fall and land and invent extreme action together.

날고, 떨어지고, 착지하는 법을 배우며 익스트림 액션을 연구했습니다.

그래서 무엇을 알게 됐을까요?

And you know what we found?

In comes everyone --

누구나 가능하다는 것이었습니다.

체격, 체형, 나이, 체력과 상관 없이요.

every size, shape, age, capacity,

every nationality, every race, every class, all genders,

국적, 인종, 사회적 지위, 성별도 상관 없고

the timid and the bold, the outcast and the cool,

겁이 많든, 용감하든, 털털하든, 활발하든

the risk avoiders and the risk obsessives.

위험을 피하는 사람이든, 즐기는 사람이든 누구나요.

And these buildings exist all over the world,

이런 건물은 전 세계에 있습니다.

and every one of them can be a flying training center.

어느 곳이든 비행 훈련을 할 장소가 될 수 있죠.

And you know, as it turns out,

그런데 나중에 알고 보니..

people don't want to just dream about flying,

사람들은 그저 하늘을 나는 걸 꿈꾸고만 있지 않았습니다.

nor do they want to watch us fly.

나는 걸 보고만 있으려 하지 않죠.

They want to do it, too, and they can.

다들 하늘을 날고 싶어합니다. 약간의 연습으로 날 수 있어요.

And with a little training,

they learn to relish the hit and the impact,

부딪히고 충격을 즐기는 법을 배우고

and, I guess even more, getting up afterwards.

I've found that the effect of flying causes smiles to get more common,

나는 법을 배우면서 더 자주 웃게 된다는 것도 알았습니다.

self-esteem to blossom,

자신감도 생기고요.

and people get just a little bit braver.

다들 더 용감해졌어요.

And people do learn to fly,

사람들은 나는 법을 배우고 있었습니다.

as only humans can.
