I'm eight years old,

저는 8살이었고

and it's my first day at the new school,

새 학교에 등교하는 첫 날이었죠.

but I cannot express myself.

근데 가서 한 마디도 못했어요.

Actually, I don't understand a single word of English.

사실 영어를 전혀 이해하지 못했거든요.

My family just moved from Korea to England.

저희 가족은 한국에서 영국으로 막 이민 온 상황이었고

My mom is raising my little sister and me,

제 엄마는 저와 여동생을 키우시며

and she's also finishing her degree.

대학교 졸업을 준비하고 계셨죠.

She's nearly as lost as I am,

어머니도 저만큼 영어를 모르셨지만

but with the little English she knows,

아는 단어들을 모두 동원해서

she speaks to my teachers in broken English, every day,

엉터리 영어로 매일 학교 선생님들께 저를 어떻게 도와야 할지 물으셨죠.

about how she can help me at home.

Compared to many other parents in the school who speak no English at all

영어를 아예 모르거나 질문조차 두려워하는 학부모와 비교하면

or are even scared to ask the questions,

제 엄마는 훨씬 나은 케이스였죠.

she's much better-off.

And for that, I'm much better-off.

그 덕분에 저도 훨씬 나았고요.

Fast-forward three months.

그렇게 세 달이 흐르고

Every time my mom picks me up,

엄마가 절 데리러 오실 때마다 한국인 부모들이 저희 차를 둘러쌌어요.

a swarm of Korean parents crowd around the car.

It causes a traffic jam, like, every day. Seriously?

그 때문에 주변에 차가 막힐 정도였죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

All the other Korean parents gather around the car,

다른 한국 부모들이 저희 차 주변에 모여

asking my mom the same questions that she asked my teachers.

엄마가 제 선생님께 물은 것들을 똑같이 질문했죠.

"What is a parent-teacher conference again?"

“학부모 상담이 언제라고 했죠?”

"My kid is behind. What can I do?"

“저희 애가 못 따라가는데, 어쩌죠?”

I don't know how I'd have survived that first year without my mom.

엄마가 안 계셨다면 저는 그 첫 해를 살아남지 못했을 거예요.

But I do know that my experience is not that unique.

그런데 이런 제 경험이 그렇게 독특한 게 아니라는 걸 압니다.

Every year, 50 million children go through the US school system.

매년 5천만 명의 아이들이 미국 교육 제도를 거쳐 갑니다.

And out of that, 40 million,

그 중 4천만 명, 즉 다섯 명 중 네 명은

that is, four out of five children,

come from underserved or immigrant families.

복지가 불충분한 가족이나 이민 가족 아이들이죠.

We're talking about the vast majority of the system here.

교육 제도 안의 대다수가 이들입니다.

I realize that I'm one of the lucky ones,

제가 운이 좋았다는 건 압니다.

because the law of averages will tell you

평균의 법칙으로 알 수 있듯이

that these children are likely to fall behind

이 아이들은 2년의 학력 격차로 뒤처질 가능성이 높으니까요.

by two whole school years.

This costs the US economy almost one trillion dollars every year.

이로 인해 미국 경제에 미치는 손실은 연간 거의 1조 달러입니다.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

하지만, 꼭 이래야만 하는 건 아녜요.

In fact, research says that for a student to do well,

연구 결과에 따르면 우수한 학업 성취를 위해서는

a family's engagement is more important than that family's wealth.

그 가정의 재산보다 가정의 교육 참여도가 더 중요합니다.

A parent is a child's first teacher,

아이의 첫 스승은 부모이고

and children spend 80 percent of their waking hours

아이들은 깨어 있는 시간의 80 퍼센트를 교실 밖에서 보내죠.

outside the classroom.

So no wonder families are the game changer.

그러니 가정이 결정적 변수라는 건 어쩌면 당연한 것입니다.

So here’s a trillion-dollar question:

그럼 백만불짜리 질문을 하나 하죠.

How can we better tap into the incredible potential of families

어떻게 하면 가정의 엄청난 잠재력과

and their universal love for their children?

그들의 보편적인 자녀 사랑을 더 잘 활용할 수 있을까요?

This is why the organization I founded helps teachers, families and schools

제가 설립한 단체는 학교, 부모, 선생님들이

connect using something that we all have:

누구나 갖고 있는 휴대폰으로 서로 소통할 수 있게 돕습니다.

a mobile phone.

Teachers write the communication in English,

선생님이 영어로 뭔가를 쓰면

and parents receive it in their own languages, and vice versa.

학부모는 각자의 언어로 메시지를 받고 이는 양방향으로 이루어지죠.

We break down the language barrier,

이로써 언어 장벽을 허물고

bridge cultural and knowledge differences by explaining education concepts

교육 개념을 설명하여 문화와 지식에서 격차를 좁혀주며

and enable and prompt parents and teachers to talk to each other.

부모와 교사 간 소통을 가능하게 하여 대화를 유도하게끔 합니다.

We're playing the role that my mom played

학교와 친구 부모님들 사이에 했던 제 어머니의 역할을 하는 셈이죠.

for the school and my friends’ families:

the communicator, the translator, the coach,

메시지 전달자이며 통역사이고 코치면서 설명해주는 중간자 역할이에요.

the explainer and the go-between.

And since my mom cannot be everywhere --

제 엄마가 여러 곳에 있을 수 없듯이

and, in fact, no parent can, and that is not for the lack of trying --

사실, 아무리 노력을 해도 그게 가능한 부모는 없기에

we've stepped in and connected four million families,

저희 단체가 나서서

현재 4백만 명의 학생, 학부모와 7만 개 학교의 교육자를 연결시킨 거죠.

and students and educators in 70,000 schools to date.

When families and schools work together, everyone wins.

학교와 가정이 협력하면 모두에게 이득이 됩니다.

Students are supported, families are empowered,

학생들에겐 기댈 곳이 생기고 가정에는 힘이 생기고

and teachers' jobs just become that much easier.

교사들의 업무는 그만큼 더 수월해 집니다.

The school environment and community thrives with people from all backgrounds.

서로 다른 배경의 사람들이 다 함께 학교 환경과 지역사회를 번성으로 이끌고

Even the system itself benefits.

교육 제도 자체에도 이득을 주죠.

Last year, the US spent nearly 700 billion dollars

작년 미국은 거의 7만 억 달러를 학령기 아동 교육을 위해 썼습니다.

on school-aged education.

So imagine if you can increase the return on that investment,

그 투자금에서 얻는 수익을 조금이나마 늘릴 수 있다고 생각해보세요.

even just a little bit,

by connecting schools to engage with all families.

학교와 모든 가정이 연결돼, 교류하면 가능한 일 입니다.

And we should.

더 생각할 필요 없이 당연히 해야 하는 일이죠.

It's literally a no-brainer.

But actually, there's something much bigger here

그런데 이 일에는 학생들의 성적을 넘어 더 광범위한 사안이 연관되어 있어요.

than student grades.

Education goes beyond economic growth,

교육은 경제 성장 그 이상의 문제이고

and our goal goes beyond the classroom.

저희의 목표는 교실 안에만 제한되지 않습니다.

Schools are a funnel to the real world.

학교라는 통로를 거쳐 아이들은 세상으로 나오고

Public education makes citizens.

공공교육으로 시민이 만들어지는 거잖아요.

And in creating the next generation of citizens,

다음 세대의 시민을 키워내는 데

we cannot be leaving behind four out of five children

5분의 4에 해당하는 아이들과 가족들을 뒤처지게 할 순 없습니다.

or their families.

If we continue to pick and choose who the system engages with

만약 우리 교육 제도가 이런 식으로 계속해서

어느 가족을 포섭할지 골라내는 식으로 간다면

generation after generation, like we do now,

지역사회나 시민사회는 없어질 거고

we will not be left with a community, a civil society

or even a functioning democracy.

심지어 제대로 기능하는 민주주의라는 것도 없어질 거예요.

Our collective well-being starts with inclusive schools

우리가 집단으로서 잘 살기 위해서는 포괄적인 학교가 먼저 있어야 하고

and helping every child realize their endless potential.

모든 아이가 각자의 잠재력을 발휘하게 도와야합니다.

So our hope is that one day,

이민 가정이나 복지 혜택을 덜 받는 가정의 아이들이

all underserved and immigrant children and their families

will feel that they belong in the education system.

자신들도 교육제도에 포함되어 있다고 느끼는 날이 오기를 바랍니다.

Our dream is that one day, they'll feel included

저희 단체의 소망은 구축되어야 할 바로 그 공동체 안에

자신들도 포함되어 있다는 느낌을 받게 하는 것입니다.

in the very communities that they're expected to build.
