This is a grand democratization that’s giving voice on a global scale

to the bizarre, fantastical stories of the unheard.

It’s amazing,

놀라운 일이죠.

and I want to tell you all about it.

지금 여러분께 전부 말씀드리겠습니다.

But first, to fully appreciate everything I'm about to say,

하지만 그 얘기를 하기 전에

you need to understand how movies and TV shows are traditionally made.

영화나 TV 드라마들이 전통적으로 어떻게 만들어지는지 알아야 합니다.

So for the longest time,

아주 오래전에는

the mainstream media industry has relied on a closed ecosystem of script writers.

미디어 산업은 주로 각본가들의 폐쇄적인 환경에 의지해 왔습니다.

These star script writers are often chosen to create a series of blockbusters.

인기 시리즈를 만들려면 유명 각본가들을 참여시켜야 했죠.

And the production house investors rely on these proven writers

그리고 제작사나 투자자들은 이런 검증된 작가들에게 의존합니다.

to increase their chances of success.

그래야 성공 가능성을 높일 수 있으니까요.

And you can see the problem here.

여기서 문제점을 볼 수 있습니다.

A closed network of writers naturally limits the boundaries of plots.

작가들의 폐쇄적인 환경은 자연스럽게 이야기의 한계를 드러냅니다.

This is why sometimes you feel like you’re watching the same superhero plots

바로 그 때문에 우리가 영화를 볼 때

슈퍼히어로 이야기가 대개 비슷하고 사랑 이야기가 진부하게 느껴지는 거죠.

and cliché love stories.

But this is all changing.

하지만 이것들이 모두 변화하고 있습니다.

And it’s changing fast because of webtoons.

그것도 아주 빨리요.

바로 웹툰 때문입니다.

A webtoon is basically a story that’s told using cartoon, comic-like illustrations.

웹툰은 기본적으로 만화 같은 삽화를 사용하여 이야기를 진행합니다.

It’s published in short segments,

보통 일주일에 한 번씩 짧은 분량으로 출판되고,

usually on a weekly basis

and meant to be read on a smartphone in five, 10 minutes.

스마트폰으로 5분에서 10분 안에 읽을 수 있도록 되어있습니다.

It’s sure to create fun, bite-sized entertainment,

그것은 분명 재미있고, 간편한 오락거리가 되어주죠.

but it's not like Instagram or TikTok.

하지만 인스타그램이나 틱톡과는 다릅니다.

Those are considered as non-storytelling media,

그것들은 스토리텔링 매체로 보기 어렵습니다.

whereas webtoons are storytelling media.

반면 웹툰은 스토리텔링 매체죠.

They are meant to follow a narrative structure.

웹툰은 서술적 구조를 따르도록 되어 있습니다.

Webtoons are published in these open platforms where anybody --

웹툰은 누구나 접할 수 있는 개방된 플랫폼에서 출판됩니다.

you, me, a single mother in Pakistan,

여러분이나 저,

파키스탄의 싱글맘에서 일본의 10대 청소년까지

a teenager in Japan,

anyone --

누구든지요.

anyone can share our great stories

누구나 자신의 위대한 이야기를 나누고

to find an audience who are excited to consume our content.

그 컨텐츠를 기꺼이 소비하고자 하는 독자들을 찾을 수 있습니다.

The whole phenomenon has started in Korea

그 모든 현상은 한국에서 시작되어

and now spread around the world.

이제 전 세계로 퍼져나갔습니다.

For example, in the United States,

예를 들어 미국에서는,

one of the major webtoon platforms,

주요 웹툰 플랫폼 중 하나인 네이버 웹툰은

called Naver Webtoon,

has now exceeded 15 million monthly users.

현재 월 사용자 수가 1,500만 명을 넘었습니다.

This is not something happening in the quiet corner of the internet.

이것은 인터넷 세상의 변방에서 일어나는 일이 아닙니다.

In fact, thanks to the healthy growth of audience,

사실, 독자들이 꾸준히 증가한 덕분에

the web story platform market itself now reaches almost one billion US dollars

웹 스토리 플랫폼 시장 규모만 해도 이제 거의 10억 달러에 달합니다.

and counting.

그리고 계속 늘어나고 있죠.

So I’m a strategy consultant,

저는 전략 컨설턴트로서

and I work with a lot of media companies and content providers.

여러 미디어 회사와 컨텐츠 기획자들과 일합니다.

And I realize that the companies

그리고 전 깨달았습니다.

and executives I work with fall into two buckets.

그 기업들과 회사 임원들을 두 부류로 나눌 수 있다는 것을요.

Those who start to realize the webtoon universe is a treasure trove

한쪽 부류는 웹툰의 세계를 일종의 보물 창고로 받아들이고

of new and fabulous stories just waiting to be made into movies or TV series.

영화나 TV 시리즈로 제작되기를 기다리는 새롭고 놀라운 이야기를 찾습니다.

And those whom I am trying to really wake up

그리고 또 다른 부류는 저의 설득이 필요한 부류입니다.

so that they can fully capitalize on this phenomenon as well.

이 현상을 최대한 활용하도록 이해시켜야 하는 부류죠.

So if you asked me to describe what a webtoon really is,

I would say it’s a multimillion-dollar megaphone for you

여러분들을 위한 수백만 달러짜리 메가폰이라고 생각합니다.

and people like you.

With the eyes of forward-thinking content producers

미래지향적인 콘텐츠 제작자의 눈으로

who are turning to webtoons,

웹툰으로 눈을 돌리면

it’s easier than ever for the writer in you

작가가 되고자 하는 분은

to become a blockbuster storyteller.

유명 작가가 되기가 그 어느 때보다 쉽습니다.

Are you a “Hellbound” fan?

‘지옥’의 팬이신가요?

What about “Itaewon Class” or “Kingdom”?

‘이태원 클라스’ 나 ‘킹덤’ 은 어떠세요?

They all started as webtoons.

모두 웹툰으로부터 시작되었습니다.

Actually, in 2021 alone,

사실 2021년 한 해에만

there were more than two dozen TV series made based on webtoons,

웹툰 원작의 TV 시리즈만 24개 이상이었습니다.

aired across major TV channels and streaming media with big-time success.

주요 TV 채널과 스트리밍을 통해 큰 성공을 거두었죠.

For example, Netflix’s “Hellbound” is a story about people

예를 들어, 넷플릭스의 ‘지옥’의 이야기 속 등장인물들은

who find out when they’re going to die

자신이 언제 죽을지 알고

and if they're going to heaven or hell.

천국에 갈지 혹은 지옥에 갈지도 알게 됩니다.

And there is an amazing plot twist

그리고 놀라운 줄거리 반전이 있어서

to keep you guessing who’s getting into heaven,

누가 천국에 가고 지옥에 가게 될지 계속 추리하도록 만듭니다.

and who’s, you know, hellbound.

“Hellbound” was originally rolled out as a webtoon in 2019 and 2020.

‘지옥’은 원래 2019년과 2020년에 웹툰으로 출시되었습니다.

Then Netflix picked it up,

그리고 넥플릭스에게 채택되어

and when it aired last year in November,

작년 11월에 방송했을 때

it hit the top 10 most-watched list.

시청률 순위 10위 안에 들었죠.

It’s a story based on the writer’s real-life experience

in Korean military police.

And, you know, if any one of you are really wondering

그리고 여러분 중 누군가 정말로

whether ordinary people can make it big in the webtoon universe,

‘보통 사람’들이 웹툰 세계에서 크게 성공할 수 있는지 궁금하다면

you would be happy to hear that the writer of “D.P” used to publish his webtoon

반가워할 사실이 있습니다.

D.P.의 작가는 자신의 웹툰을 ‘김보통’이라는 필명으로 출판했죠.

under Ordinary Kim.

The webtoon writers can make up to 150,000 US dollars in Korea a year,

한국에서 웹툰 작가들은 연간 15만 달러까지 벌어들입니다.

which is five times higher than the average income.

평균 소득보다 5배나 높은 액수죠.

This is usually based on the revenue

이 수익은 보통

split between the writers and the webtoon platforms.

작가와 웹툰 플랫폼에게 분배됩니다.

And for those major ones such as Ordinary Kim,

그리고 김보통 같은 유명 작가들,

who make a serial hit webtoons

웹툰들이 연속적으로 인기를 끌고

and crossover content creation such as movies and dramas,

그것이 영화나 드라마 같은 다른 형태로 제작된 작가들은

I mean, they can make, you know, 10 times higher income or even more.

10배 이상의 수익을 거두기도 합니다.

You know what else I really love

또 하나 제가 만족하는 건

about the fact that the media industry is pulling stories from webtoons?

미디어 산업이 웹툰에서 이야기를 끌어오고 있다는 것입니다.

So many people win

그러면 여러 사람에게 득이 되죠.

because this new model is interactive.

이 새로운 모델은 상호 작용하기 때문입니다.

Web story authors get real-time feedback from the audience who reads each episode.

웹툰 작가들은 각 에피소드에 대한 독자들의 평가를 실시간으로 받습니다.

So the writers get better faster,

그래서 작가들은 더 빨리 발전하게 되고,

and the media companies don’t have to wait until after the show is made

미디어 회사들은 드라마 제작 후에 반응이 어떨지 기다릴 필요가 없죠.

This new model also helps

with the media industry’s notorious problem with diversity.

Anyone can be a writer in a web story platform,

from a fresh grad cartoonist to a housewife,

갓 졸업한 만화가에서 주부에 이르기까지

to who, you know, who dreamed of being a novelist one day.

언젠가 소설가가 되기를 꿈꿔 왔던 사람들 누구나 말이죠.

The writers are diverse and creative,

작가들은 다양하고 창의적입니다.

그래서 그들만의 이야기가 있죠.

and so are their stories.

One of the popular webtoons called “True Beauty”

인기 웹툰 중 하나인′ 여신강림’은

was written by an amateur cartoonist.

아마추어 만화가에 의해 쓰여졌습니다.

It was her first webtoon

그녀의 첫 웹툰이었지만,

and became a big hit that found fans in close to 100 countries.

100여개 나라에 팬을 둘 정도로 큰 인기를 끌었습니다.

Then it was made into TV drama that aired all across Asia.

그리고 나서 TV 드라마로 제작되어 아시아 전역에 방영되었죠.

It’s a story about a high school girl who has quite different looks

이 이야기에는 한 여고생이 주인공이며

화장을 지우면 전혀 다른 사람으로 보인다는 설정입니다.

with and without makeup.

Then the story shows how she became, you know,

그리고 이 이야기는

그녀가 자기 모습을 있는 그대로 받아들이고

comfortable with herself and loved as she is.

자신을 사랑하게 되는 과정을 보여주죠.

At the beginning, people didn’t know who the writer was.

초반에는 작가가 누군지 아무도 몰랐습니다.

As the show became more and more popular,

그리고 드라마가 점점 유명해지면서

the writer got a spotlight,

작가가 주목을 받고

and it was more surprising that she looked very alike to the main character.

놀랍게도 그녀는 자기 웹툰의 주인공과 비슷한 모습이었습니다.

And she’s a single mom.

그리고 싱글맘이었죠.

Now, not only has her webtoon and drama become a big hit,

이제 그녀의 웹툰과 드라마는 큰 인기를 끌었을 뿐만 아니라,

she’s creating a positive influence

한국에서 한부모 사회에 대한 관심을 이전보다 훨씬 더 높임으로써

by making single-parent society much more public than before in Korea.

긍정적인 영향을 끼치고 있습니다.

Where to from here?

이제 어느 방향으로 진화할까요?

I personally believe in a few scenarios of evolution.

저는 개인적으로 몇 가지 진화 시나리오를 믿습니다.

For the webtoon industry,

웹툰 업계에서는

there will be more and more specialized drawing houses,

좀 더 전문화된 미술 교육 기관이 늘어나

which could help with designs and drawing

디자인이나 그림 그리기에 도움을 줄 것이고,

so that more writers could provide great stories

더 많은 작가들이 훌륭한 이야기를 제공할 수 있을 것입니다.

without having to be great artists.

훌륭한 예술가가 될 필요 없이 말이죠.

For streaming networks,

스트리밍 서비스 업체들은

they will continue to keep an eye on unique stories starting from webtoons

웹툰에서 시작된 독특한 이야기들을 주시할 것입니다.

to web novel,

웹 소설이나 고전 문학,

to classic novel --

even mythology.

어쩌면 신화까지도요.

Who knows?

누가 알겠어요?

Maybe the next big-hit drama could even originate from an old goddess story

어쩌면 다음 대히트 드라마는 인도네시아의 한 섬에 있는

in an island in Indonesia.

오래된 여신 이야기에서 비롯될 수도 있습니다.

The competition to hunt the best story in the world is on.
