Ten years is a long time for us humans on earth.

The planetary boundaries are all deeply connected,

but climate, alongside biodiversity, are core boundaries.

Back then we really thought we had more time.

The warning lights were on, absolutely,

Climate has reached a global crisis point.

We have now had 10 years of record-breaking climate extremes:

fires blaze in Australia, Siberia, California and the Amazon,

floods in China, Bangladesh and India.

We're now enduring heat waves across the entire northern hemisphere.

We risk crossing tipping points

that shift the planet from being our best resilient friend,

When my scientific colleagues summarized, about a decade ago,

the state of knowledge on climate tipping points,

just one place had strong evidence that it was on a serious downward spiral.

Other tipping points were long way off --

Just last year we revisited these systems,

and I got the shock of my career.

We are only a few decades away from an Arctic without sea ice in summer.

And now, the most solid of glaciers on earth, East Antarctica,

Nine out of the 15 big biophysical systems that regulate climate are now on the move,

Tipping points bring three threats.

First, sea level rise.

We can already expect up to one meter this century.

But when we add the melting ice from Antarctica and Greenland

Let's stop for a moment and look at where we are.

Three million years --

temperatures have never broken through the two degrees Celsius limit.

Earth has self-regulated within a very narrow range

of plus two degrees in a warm interglacial,

Now, we are following a path

For each one degree rise,

What happens in the next 10 years

We need to get serious about stabilizing our planet.

Two frontiers will guide this transformation.

The first one is in science.

Here's a new equation for a sustainable planet:

planetary boundaries plus global commons

equals planetary stewardship.

We need to a safe corridor for humanity

to allow us all to become stewards of the entire planet,

not to save the planet but to provide a good future for all people.

지구를 구할 뿐만 아니라 모두에게 좋은 미래를 제공하기 위해서죠.

And the second frontier is in society.

두 번째는 사회입니다.

We need a new economic logic based on well-being.

우리는 삶의 질에 따른 새로운 경제 논리가 필요합니다.

We are now in a position to provide science-based targets

모든 기업과 전세계 도시가 활용할 지구 환경 공공재 보호를 위해

for all global commons for all companies and cities in the world.

과학적 근거를 바탕으로 한 배출물 감소 목표를 규정할 수 있죠.

First task, we need to cut global emissions by half by 2030

첫 과제는 2030년까지 배출물을 반으로 줄이는 것입니다.

and reach net-zero by 2050 or sooner.

2050년 혹은 더 빨리 배출량이 없어져야 합니다.

This means decarbonizing the big systems that run our lives:

우리 일상생활을 유지하는 큰 체제를 친환경으로 바꾼다는 말이죠.

energy, industry, transport, buildings.

에너지, 산업, 교통, 빌딩 같은 체제말입니다.

The fossil fuel era is over.

석탄 시대는 끝났습니다.

We need to transform agriculture from a source of emissions

탄소를 배출하는 농업에서

to a store of carbon,

저장하는 농업으로 바꾸고

and critically, we must protect our oceans and land,

특히, 우리의 바다와 땅을 그리고 자연 생태계를

the natural ecosystems that absorb half of our emissions.

배출물의 반을 흡수할 수 있도록 보호해야 합니다.

The good news is, we can do this.

좋은 소식은 바로 우리가 할 수 있다는 것 입니다.

We have the knowledge. We have the technology.

We know it makes social and economic sense.

And when we succeed, we can all take lungfuls of fresh air.

We will be saying hello to healthy lifestyles

and resilient economies in livable cities.

거주가능한 도시에서 회복력있는 경제도 가질 수 있죠.

We are all on this journey around the sun together.

우리는 태양 주변을 맴도는 이 여행을 함께하고 있습니다.

This is our only home.

지구는 우리의 유일한 집입니다.

This is our mission: to protect our children's future.

우리 아이들의 미래를 지키는 것이 바로 우리의 사명입니다.
