Now we come down to it, relatives grieving.

모든 것을 끝내고 자넨 떠나가니

Now that they've sealed your arse and your ears,

What I've been meaning to tell you for years,

And years, and years, and years, old friend ...

I wrote this next poem for my mother.

이번 시는 모친을 위해 썼습니다.

Every one of us had a mother,

누구나 어머니가 있지요.

only one --

오직 한 분.

probably the most important person in your life,

여러분 인생에 아마 가장 중요한 사람일 겁니다.

if you're lucky enough to know them.

만일 운 좋게 그 걸 안다면 말입니다.

My mother was certainly the most important in mine.

제게도 어머니가 가장 중요한 분입니다.

Let me try and describe her to you.

그 분에 대해 말씀 드릴까 합니다.

She's 86 years old. She's frail.

여든 여섯에, 기력은 별로 없으시지요.

White, platinum hair.

머리는 호호백발이고요.

Why do they do that? Why do old ladies go to those hair shops,

그런데 할머니들은 왜들 그러죠? 왜들 미용실에 가서

and make those helmets?

머리를 헬멧처럼 띄우죠?

Bright as a button. All the ducks in a row.

정신은 총명하세요. 빈틈 없으시고요.

Looks like a much prettier version

of Margaret Thatcher,

but without any of the soft bits in Margaret's character.

I wrote this poem for her. These are not my beliefs.

America, ladies and gentlemen, has done more for me financially than Britain

여러분, 미국은 제게 엄청나게 벌어다 줬습니다.

ever has, or ever could have done.

영국이 해준, 아니 해줄 수 있었던 것보다요.

I was born in Britain, as you have probably guessed.

짐작하셨겠지만, 저는 영국태생입니다.

Even when on its worst behavior,

근데 미국이 아무리 추악한 짓을 해도

I find myself automatically defending the USA

자동적으로 미국 편을 들게 되더군요.

from the sneers of green-eyed Europhiles

로마식 트럼프에 그리스식 카드를 내는

playing their Greek card to Roman trumps.

그런 친유럽파가 질투 어린 눈으로 경멸하면 말이지요.

America is an empire.

미국은 제국입니다.

I hope you know that now.

이제는 여러분도 아시길 바랍니다.

All empires, by definition, are bumbling,

제국이라면 모두

shambolic, bullying, bureaucratic affairs,

갈팡질팡 난장판에 협박이나 일삼는 관료주의적 물건이라 정의되지요.

as certain of the rightness of their cause in infancy,

초반에 올바른 대의로 확신에 찬 만큼이나

as they are corrupted by power in their dotage.

말년에 가서는 힘이 생겨 부패하게 됩니다.

I am no historian, ladies and gentlemen.

여러분, 저는 역사학자는 아닙니다.

But it seems to be that the USA's sins,

미국의 죄악은,

compared to those of many previous empires,

이전의 많은 강대국들과 비교해봐도

are of a more moderate,

점잖은 편인것 같습니다.

if more pervasive, kind.

널리 퍼지긴 했지만 말이죠.

Let me put this bluntly.

탁 터놓고 말해 볼까요.

If Americans are so fat,

미국인들이 그렇게 뚱뚱하고

stupid and ignorant,

멍청하고 무식하다면,

my dear friends from Birmingham,

영국에서 건너 온 우리 친구들이

how come they rule the world?

도대체 무슨 수로 세계를 지배하겠나요?

"Hail to the Gods of America."

"미국의 신이여 만세!"

Hail to the Gods of America!

Hail to the gods of the dream.

Invictus E Pluribus Unum.

But which of them reigns supreme?

Which is America's Jupiter?

The Brahmins of Capital Hill?

A sorcerer's profit on Wall Street?

재계 큰 손?

They eye of a dollar bill?

Or is it celebrity status?

The worship of those we hate.

증오하는 이 숭배하고

Or the cult of living forever,

영생을 따르고

If only we'd watch our weight.

미디어 거물들은 어떤가?

Or Hollywood's siren call?

What of the temples of justice,

Whose servants enslave us all?

What of the Brand and the Label?

유명 브랜드는 어떤가?

What of the upstart Sport?

신흥 스포츠 경기는?

And what of the Constitution,

헌법은 또 어떤가?

That bully of last resort?

협박이라는 최후의 수단?

Hail to the God of America,

미국의 신이여 만세!

Whose power the masses extol --

누구의 권력에 집단으로 격찬하나?

Convenience rules America;

편리함이 미국을 지배하지,

Convenience owns our soul.

편리함이 우리 정신을 소유한다네.

Aye, that it does.

아, 정말 그렇지요.

And if you would like to know why I am not a father --

혹시 제가 아비가 못 된 이유가 궁금하신지 몰라도 –

I, who by a miracle have 22 godchildren --

기적적으로 저의 대자는 22명이나 됩니다만

the answer is in this poem,

그 이유가 여기 있습니다.

which upsets me every time I read it.

이 시를 낭독할 때마다 가슴이 아파옵니다.

Love came to visit me,

사랑이 날 찾아왔네,

shy as a fawn.

사슴처럼 수줍게.

But finding me busy,

분주한 날 보고는,

she fled, with the dawn.

새벽따라 달아났네.

At 20 the torch of resentment was lit.

내 나이 스물, 분노의 횃불 불붙어

My rage at injustice

부당함에 격노하며

waxed hot as the pits.

연통같이 달아올랐네.

The flux of its lava cleared all in its path.

용암처럼 흘러 경로마다 휩쓸었지.

Comrades and enemies fled from its wrath.

동지건 원수건 분노에서 달아나고.

Yet lovers grew wary, once novelty waned

애인들은 지치고, 한 때 신선함도 시들해졌지.

To lie with a bloody man,

혈이 낭자한 놈과 잤더니

his terror unfeigned.

녀석의 공포 가식이 아니더라.

At 30 my powers seemed mighty to me.

내 나이 서른, 내 권능 막강해 보였네.

The fruits of my rivals, I shook from the tree.

경쟁자의 열매도, 나무째 흔들었지.

By guile and by bluster,

속임수로, 허세로,

by night and by day,

낮이고 밤이고

I battered and scattered the fools from my way.

내 앞길 가로막는 놈들 때려 날려 버렸지.

And women grew willing to sham and to bluff.

여자들은 거짓부렁 허풍떨기 늘어가고

Their trinkets and baubles cost little enough.

그네들 장신구 보석은 싸구려라네.

From 40 to 50, grown easy and sly,

내 나이 사오십, 느긋하고 교활해져

I wined them and dined them, like pigs in a sty.

진탕 먹고 마셨네, 우리 안 돼지처럼

We feasted and reveled and rutted in muck,

향연 주연 즐기고 진창 속 발정 났네.

Forgetting our peril, forgetting to duck,

우리 위험 잊은 채, 피할 생각 잊은 채

Forgetting times arrows are sharper than knives.

칼보다 예리한 시간의 살 잊고서

Grown sick to our stomachs,

뱃속부터 역겨워져

and sick of our lives.

우리 삶이 역겨워졌지.

Love came to visit me,

사랑이 날 찾아왔네,

shy as a fawn.

사슴처럼 수줍게

But finding me busy,

분주한 날 보고는,

she fled with the dawn.

새벽따라 달아났네.

Um, there are --

음, 말하자면..

I've got far too much money and I have far too much fun

저는 돈도 엄청나게 벌어봤고

in my businesses.

일에서 재미도 봤습니다.

So poetry came as a complete shock to me, ladies and gentlemen.

그런데 여러분, 느닷없이 시가 제가 다가왔습니다.

A complete shock. I was a little ill.

엄청난 충격이었지요. 전 좀 아팠습니다.

Okay, I was ill.

그래요, 병들어 있었어요.

Okay, I had a life-threatening illness, you know.

죽을 수도 있는 병이었습니다.

I was in a clinic. I wasn't allowed to make telephone calls.

입원 중이었습니다. 전화조차 허락되지 않았죠.

I wasn't allowed to see any of my -- you know, whatever.

말하자면, 누구든 만나지도 못했지요.

So, in the end I begged a pack of Post-it notes off a nurse.

할 수 없이 간호사더러 포스트잇 한 통이나 달라고 했습니다.

And from another nurse, I begged a pencil, pen.

다른 간호사한테는 연필, 펜을 얻고요.

And I didn't know what else to do. So I started to write poetry.

달리 할 일이 없었습니다. 그렇게 시작(時作)이 시작됐지요.

That was in October of 2000.

그 때가 2000년 10월 이군요.

I'm not an evil man.

저는 사악한 놈은 아닙니다만

But sometimes I try to put myself in an evil man's position.

그런 사악한 놈이 된것처럼 상상해 보기도 합니다.

I'm not a glorious and fantastic-looking woman,

눈부시도록 아름다운 미모의 여성은 아닙니다만,

who men fall down, you know, when she walks in a room.

안으로 들어서면, 남자들을 자빠뜨릴 만큼 말이죠.

But sometimes I try to put myself in that position.

그런 여자가 된 듯 상상해 보기도 합니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Not with much success.

잘 되지는 않지요.

But it's interesting to me. I love to write historical verse.

그래도 재미는 있답니다. 저는 역사시를 즐겨 씁니다.

I love to think what they thought, what it was like.

옛날 사람들이 무슨 생각을 하고 어땠을까 하는 상상이 재밌습니다.

Because although

비록

many of the speakers and many of the people who are in the audience,

이 자리에 많은 강연자와 청중들이 모여계시지만,

although you guys can not only go to the moon,

여러분은 달에 갈 수 있을 뿐 아니라,

you know, you're going to totally transform everything.

아시다시피, 세상을 완전히 바꿔놓을 겁니다.

Cloning will transform everything. Voice navigation will transform everything.

인간복제도, 음성 항법 장치도 세상을 바꿔놓을 겁니다.

I don't know. You can do anything you want.

모르긴 몰라도 여러분이 원하는 바 모두 이룰 겁니다.

All you guys are so clever, and women, you can do it all!

여러분 모두가, 여성분들도, 이렇게 똑똑하니 뭐든지 해낼 수 있지요.

But human nature doesn't change, mate.

그런데 인간 본성은 변하지가 않습니다, 여러분.

My friends, human nature is exactly the same as it was

동지여러분, 인간의 본성은 조금도 달라지지 않아서

when my ancestor --

우리의 조상이

probably it was my ancestor --

-아마 우리 조상이었겠죠-

got his hands around the neck of the last Neanderthal,

마지막 원시인의 목을 부여잡고

and battered the bastard to death.

죽도록 때려눕힐 때나 마찬가집니다.

You think we didn't do that?

그랬을 리가 없다고 생각하시나요?

Oh, we did.

아니요, 정말 그랬습니다.

We killed every single one of them.

우리는 한 놈 한 놈 모조리 죽였습니다.

Inch by inch we killed them.

서서히 죽여나갔지요.

We hunted them down wherever they were.

경쟁자가 어디 있든 끝까지 찾아가

Rivals for meat. Rivals for berries.

고기를, 과실을 두고

We're still doing it,

지금도 경쟁은 계속됩니다.

with all of the genius assembled in this room.

여기 모인 똑똑한 여러분들끼리도요.

Our natures haven't changed a single iota.

우리 본성은 눈곱만치도 변하지 않았습니다.

And they never will.

앞으로도 그럴 겁니다.

Even when we've got off this little planet,

미래에 인간이 지구를 떠나더라도

and have put some of our eggs in some other baskets.

어딘가 살 궁리는 해놓겠지요.

And I am as bad as you.

저는 여러분 못지않게 나쁜 놈입니다.

I spent eight years

8년 동안

running one of the most successful publishing businesses in the world.

세계 최고의 출판회사를 운영했지요.

And at seven o'clock every night,

매일 저녁 7시면

I took me some more girls, already corrupted.

이미 타락한 여자애들을 많이도 데리고 놀았고요.

I never did anything to anyone that wasn't.

안 그런 애들은 건드리지도 않았습니다.

And I took crack cocaine,

마약은

every single night for seven years.

칠 년 동안 하루도 빠짐없이 했습니다.

It was like Dante's "Inferno."

단테가 말한 “지옥불”에 빠진 듯 했죠.

It was unbelievable.

끔찍한 시절이었죠.

One of the offshoots of crack cocaine is that you keep an erection

마약을 하면 부작용이 발기가

for about four hours.

4시간이나 지속된다는 겁니다.

And you stay up for 12.

그런데 12시간동안 깨어있다면요.

It was absolutely unbelievable.

완전히 말도 안 되죠.

Twenty-two godchildren I've got.

제겐 대자들이 스물 둘이나 있습니다.

What do I say to them?

애들에겐 뭐라 말하죠?

I only stopped because I thought if I got caught,

마약을 끊을 수 밖에 없었던 이유는 만약 제가 검거되었을 때,

what would happen to my mother.

어머니께 일어날 일을 생각한 거죠.

If you're a woman, remember that.

여성분들은 잊지 마세요.

The love of your son

아들에 대한 사랑이

can utterly transform anything he does.

아들의 행동을 완전히 바꿔놓기도 한답니다.

Pale she was, listless;

창백한 그녀, 무기력했지.

And soft to the touch.

만지기 부드러웠고

A generous mistress Whom many loved much.

We hoarded and sold her --

아껴놨던 그녀 팔아먹었지.

Our Lady in White.

우리들의 하얀 여인

We breathed but to savor

우리의 호흡은 오직

her crystal caress.

여인의 투명한 애무 맛보기 위한 것.

We craved but to favor the hem of her dress.

우리의 열광은 오직 여인의 치맛자락 즐기기 위한 것.

We dabbled and babbled,

주저리들 떠들었네,

Denying our thirsts.

갈망을 부정한 채

But always we scrabbled

우린 늘 난리를 쳤다네.

to lie with her first.

여인과 먼저 동침하기위해

Absent, we missed her,

그녀 없어지자, 그리움에,

grew haggard and limp.

힘없이 야위어갔네.

Toyed with her sister,

동생을 농락하고,

or threatened her pimp.

포주를 협박했네.

Came word out of Babel, the lady returns!

바벨에서 들려온 소식, 여인이 돌아왔도다!

And there on the table we took her, in turns.

거기 탁자 위 그녀를 취했지, 돌아가며.

Sensing the power that tyranny craves,

제압이 갈구하는 힘을 느끼며,

There in that hour, she made us her slaves.

바로 그 때, 우리는 여인의 노예.

Many there were, to covet her kiss.

수 많은 이가, 여인의 키스를 갈구했지.

My shame as a spur,

내 충동의 수치심이 ,

I fled the abyss.

나는 나락에서 벗어났다네.

But only just.
