I'm reminded of how, just last year -- you might remember it --

In 1871, Karl Mauch, a German geologist working in Southern Africa,

he stumbled across an extraordinary complex,

a complex of abandoned stone buildings.

And he never quite recovered from what he saw:

And today, as the shrines and the mosque vandalized by Ansar Dine

And we are left with powerful lessons,

But those roots, they remain.
