I've been in love with music my whole life,

both as a musician and as a listener.

But as a listener,

sometimes songs feel a little like houses to me,

houses that you can only see from the street.

You can stop and admire them from the outside.

You can say, "Wow, look, the architecture is amazing.

そういう美しさなのです

You might be able to get a little peek inside through one of the windows,

ミュージシャンとして 曲を世に出すときは

but it’s this thing of beauty that you have to appreciate from a distance

時々 自分で建てた家の裏庭に 締め出されたような

because it's not yours.

感覚に陥ります

And as a musician, when you put a song out into the world,

見にくる人が いるかもしれませんが

その人たちに家の中を見せる機会が 一切ないのです

it can sometimes feel like you're trapped in the backyard

曲の中には様々な部分があって

of this house that you built.

There might be people looking at it,

いろんな思いや美を詰めこんで 構想し 作曲し 録音されていますが

but you never get the chance to show them anything inside.

そういう部分を聞くことになるのは

Inside a song, there are all these parts that get imagined and written and recorded

その曲を作った本人だけで

世に出るのは 全ての部分が 最終版としてまとめられたものです

that are so full of thought and beauty,

but only the people who've made the song

曲を出すときは いつも 少し寂しい気持ちになります

ever get to hear those pieces on their own.

私が作曲中に聞いていた いろんなものを

All those pieces get smushed together in the final version that comes out.

他の誰も耳にすることがないのです

Whenever I put out a song, I was always a little sad

言っている意味がわかるよう 私の曲の一節を聞いて頂きましょう

that no one else was going to get to hear the things that I had heard

when I was making it.

Let me show you what I mean. Here's a clip from a song of mine.

これを聞いて 皆さんはどう感じましたか？

いいなと思った人も あんまりと思った人もいるでしょう

あるいは「曲を20秒だけ 聞かされてもわからないよ

OK. What's your experience when you listen to that?

何を期待してるんだ？」と 思ったかもしれません

ごもっともです

You might like it, maybe, or you might hate it,

私が聞いているものを 他の人に 聞き取ってもらえるとは望めません

or you might say, "I don't know, dude,

この曲は チェロとギターとドラムの音だけで できているわけではありません

it's 20 seconds of a song, what do you want from me?"

Which is fair.

What I hear is impossible to expect anyone else to hear.

私が経験した様々なものを 詰め込むことで

この曲は成り立っているのです

It's not just the cello part and the guitar part and the drum beat.

それで 私は2014年に ある番組を始めて

作り手と聞き手の間の隔たりを 解消しようと試みました

It's also all the things that I lived through

in order for that music to exist.

ミュージシャンにインタビューして 作品の一つについて聞き

So in 2014, I started a show

その曲を織りなしている様々な層を

to try and solve this distance between the creator and the audience.

まとめ上げていきます

そうすれば 曲の作り手が建てた 家の中へ 聞き手を招き入れ

I interviewed musicians about one of their songs

and then combined that with the different layers of music

案内して回れると考えたのです

that make up that song.

アーティストは家の土台を指し

I thought this way an artist could bring a listener in

「曲の原点はここです」 と言えるでしょう

さらに層が積み上げられていくと

and give them a guided tour of this house they made.

やがて曲の全容が 明らかになります

They could point to the foundation

その番組は『Song Exploder』 という名前で―

and say, "This is how the song got started."

And then as more and more layers get built on top,

eventually the full song gets revealed.

元々はポッドキャストで

The show is called "Song Exploder."

その後ネットフリックスの ＴＶ番組にもなりました

It's a pod --

この何年かで

多くの有名ミュージシャンに 話を聞きました

“Song Exploder” is a podcast,

and it's also a TV show that I adapted for Netflix.

フリートウッド・マック、Ｕ２ リン＝マニュエル・ミランダ、アリシア・キーズ

And over the years, I've gotten to talk

ビリー・アイリッシュ、ザ・ルーツ ヨーヨー・マほか 200名以上です

to some of the biggest musicians in the world about their work.

People like Fleetwood Mac and U2, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alicia Keys,

当初は １曲の音楽に着目して

Billie Eilish, The Roots and Yo-Yo Ma, and over 200 others.

その「家」の中には何があるのか 探そうとしていましたが

At first, I was really looking at those isolated pieces of music

アーティストたちと 曲について話をしていく中で

to do the work of revealing the inside of their respective houses.

あることに気づきました

会話そのものの中にも

But as I was having conversations with them about their songs,

潜んでいるということです

something happened.

I realized that there were rooms

音楽を聞くときに 試みたやり方が

to be discovered in the conversations themselves,

人の話を聞くときにも できないものかと

doors that could be opened.

というのも 誰かが話をするとき その話の中には

And I started to wonder:

Could I try listening to people

曲と同じように 様々な層が 詰まっているからです

the way that I was trying to listen to music?

通りにたたずんで 外から家を眺めるだけでは

Because when someone tells you something, just like with a song,

見逃してしまう 意味合いがあるかもしれません

there can be all these layers within it.

家の中に入るためには よく注意を払い

There can be all this context that you're missing

as the person out on the street, outside of the house.

はじめ言っていたことの奥には

掘り出すべきものが ありそうだというヒントに

So to get inside, I had to listen for those moments,

気づく必要があって

それで 音楽を聞くことで 培った知恵を

those clues where there was more to be discovered,

会話をする時にも 生かそうと心掛けています

where there was something below the surface

of what was first presented to me.

新たな考えに心を開くこと

So I borrowed from my music-listening brain,

他のことを同時にしないこと

and now when I’m in a conversation, this is what I try to do.

会話に興味を持っていることが 相手にわかるようにすること

話題を相手から自分に 移さないようにすること

Be open to new ideas.

Stop multitasking.

『Song Exploder』を作る中で

Let the other person know that you’re engaged,

以前より幅広いジャンルの音楽を 聞くようになりました

and do it without taking your focus away from them and turning it onto you.

若かりし頃は

音楽の趣味の高尚さを 鼻にかけていたものです

Because of making "Song Exploder,"

I now listen to a much wider range of music than I used to.

けれども今では そんな態度だと 優れたものを聞く機会を

When I was younger,

I used to actually pride myself on my music snobbery.

自ら捨てることになる 気がしています

人の話を聞く時にも 同じことが言え

But nowadays, it just feels like I'm potentially cutting myself off

広い心と好奇心を持って 新しいことを学ぶ姿勢で

from hearing some great ideas.

入っていく必要があります

And I think that’s a prerequisite when it comes to listening to people, too.

また 一度にいろんなことを したくなるのは抑え難くとも

You have to go into it open-minded and curious

それを抑えることが とても大切です

and ready to learn something new.

近頃では 音楽を聞くという行為は

Also, the instinct to multitask is so hard to turn off,

ほとんどの場合 受身で

他のことをする背景で流れる BGMのようなものばかりだし

but it's so important that you do it.

You know, when you're listening to music these days,

言いたかないですが 携帯やスマートウォッチに気を取られ

most of the time it's something that we do passively.

頭の中で思考がさまよい

It's in the background.

It's the soundtrack to something else that we're doing.

注意散漫になりやすく

人の話を聞くときも そんな風になりがちです

And I hate to say it, but between our phones and our smartwatches

でも そんな態度でいては 真に会話に没頭することは無理です

and just our own wandering thoughts,

it's easy to get distracted,

and we tend to listen to other people that way, too.

想像してみてください

音楽を聞きながら 別の曲を頭の中で歌おうとしても

But you can't really get immersed if that's the case.

無理でしょうし できても上手くはできません

Imagine trying to listen to a song

他のことを考えていたら

相手が話す内容を 十分には堪能できません

while singing a different song in your head.

また私は 非言語コミュニケーションが 重要だと思っています

You can't do it or you can't do it well.

And you can't fully appreciate what someone else is saying

ただ うなずいて みせるだけでも

if you're thinking about something else.

相手に対し 話を聞いていることを示すことができ

I'm also a big believer in the power of nonverbal communication.

話を続けるよう 促すことにもなります

Like, just the simple act of a nod

is a way to let the other person know that you're engaged

話に没頭し意図して沈黙を保つことで 相手は自由に動けます

and also invites them to keep going and say more.

時には 話を引っ張り出してやらなきゃいけない 相手もいますが

That kind of intentional, engaged silence makes space for them.

今言ったことの奥に 何があるのか尋ねてみたら

Sometimes, though, you do have to actually ask for more.

新たな扉の鍵が開いて

You have to draw them out.

一緒に中に入る きっかけになるかもしれません

But if you can ask for what's below the surface of what they just said,

またそれは 自分のことを話したくなる 気持ちを抑えることも意味します

you might unlock some door for them

and invite them to go through it with you.

自分のことを話すのは

話を聞いていると示すのに 最善だと前は思っていました

That also means turning off the instinct to talk about yourself.

相手が言った何かに反応して

「自分にも似たことがあったんですよ」 と言って

I used to think that this was actually the best way to show

そのことを話し始めるんです

that I was really listening.

でも それでは 音楽を途中まで聞いて

Someone would tell me something

and I’d say, “That reminds me of this thing that happened to me,”

「ああ この部分はなんか あの曲に似てますね」と言って

and then I would tell a whole story of my own.

聞いていた曲を止め 別の曲をかけるようなものです

But it's kind of like listening to half a song and then saying,

まあ それもやったことが あるんですが

"Oh, you know, this part reminds me of this other song,"

（笑）

and then turning that first song off and going and putting on some other song,

でも そんな風に流れを断ち切っていては 会話に深く入っていけません

which is also something I've done.

ですから 話題を自分に持っていくことなく 会話に集中するために

(Laughter)

But you can't get deeper if you lose the moment like that.

短気やエゴとは 戦う必要があります

So it's a challenge to your impatience and to your selfishness

さて 今言ったアドバイスは 無視することにして

to be engaged without making it about you.

自分の話をしたいと思います

私自身のことと 先ほどの曲のことを話すことで

OK, and so now to ignore the advice about talking about yourself.

私の言いたいことが 伝わればと思います

I would like to talk about myself

ずっと昔 最初の作品を レコーディングしていた頃

and tell you a little bit about me and that song that I played you a part of

自作の曲を 自分の部屋で 何度も繰り返し演奏していました

to hopefully illustrate what I'm talking about.

音楽の道に進みたいという話は 両親にはとてもできませんでした

Years ago, when I was making my first recordings,

両親は苦労してきた移民で

I would play my songs over and over and over again in my bedroom.

息子を医者か弁護士にするのが夢でした

My music career wasn't really something I could talk about with my parents.

でも そうした中で

They were hardworking immigrants

母がひとり 台所にいる時

whose dream for me had been to become a doctor or a lawyer.

私の曲を鼻歌で歌っているのを 耳にしたんです

言葉にせずに 認めてもらえたように感じました

But every now and then,

I would hear my mom humming one of my songs

その後もずっと

just to herself in the kitchen.

母が私の曲を鼻歌で歌うのを聞くたびに 幸せな気持ちになっていました

And that felt like some kind of unspoken approval.

その母も 去年の秋に亡くなりました

And over the years, whenever I would hear my mom humming one of my songs,

お葬式から何週間かして

it made me so happy.

夢に母が現れて

Last fall, my mom passed away.

少しおしゃべりしました

And a few weeks after her funeral,

I had a dream where I got to see her and talk to her

夢から覚めて 恋しさと悲しみに包まれましたが

and visit with her for a little bit.

同時に そんな夢の一時に 感謝の気持ちも起きました

And I woke up filled with longing and sadness

それで その経験を歌にしたんです

（穏やかなギターの伴奏）

but also gratitude for this moment and this dream.

（歌）でも また会えて うれしかった

And I ended up writing a song about it.

また会えて

また会えて すごくうれしかった

(Sings) But it's so good to see you.

少しだけ歌うのをやめて 鼻歌でメロディを歌ってみました

In the bridge,

I stopped singing for a little bit and I just hummed a melody.

母のことを考えていて

どうにかして 音楽で母を表現したいと思いました

(Humming)

この曲の制作中に それについて話した相手の一人が

I was thinking about my mom,

and I wanted to try and represent her in the music in some way.

ヨーヨー・マでした

彼に曲の持つ意味と

その部分で何を表そうとしているかを 話しました

One of the people who I talked to about the song

while I was making it was Yo-Yo Ma.

その上で尋ねてみました 「チェロの音色で母の声を

I told him, this is what the song is about

表現することは できるでしょうか？」

and this is what the music is supposed to do in this part.

彼は 私の話をすべて聞いた上で こんな風に弾いたんです

And I asked him, "Do you think that the cello

（流れるようなチェロのメロディ）

could represent my mom's voice?"

And he listened to everything that I said. And then he played those notes.

So now, what’s your experience when you listen to that

from inside the house?

引き出せる可能性が 詰まっています

Every conversation has the potential to open up and reveal

個人的には これからも 入り口を探し続け

誰かに話を聞く機会があるたびに その人の考えが秘めた奥深さ 豊かさを

all the layers and layers within it,

all those rooms within rooms.

And personally, I hope that I can keep looking for those ways in

経験できたらと思っています
