When I was six years old,

our house caught fire,

and my mother died.

It was a cold February night in Michigan.

Our chimney had recently been fixed,

so we had a warm fire going in the fireplace.

We later found out that our fire from earlier

I remember standing next to my sister's room,

I remember feeling the heat of the fire on my skin

and hearing the sound of it as it climbed up the stairs.

My dad ran down to my bedroom window as an escape route,

but it was February, and it was frozen shut.

We'd never seen him before,

and even though he saved our lives,

We were brought over to a neighbor's house

and burst into flames.

It took the fire department longer to find my mom.

She'd been on the floor of my bedroom the entire time,

pinned down by a dresser that had fallen on her leg.

We think she went back to look for our dog,

but by the time the fire department reached them it was too late.

She died on the way to the hospital.

Dad was in critical condition,

with smoke inhalation and burns and cuts over a third of his body.

بەهۆی هەڵمژینی دوکەڵ و سوتان و برینی سەر سێیەکی جەستەی.

He spent nearly a month in the hospital,

نزیکەی مانگێکی لە نەخۆشخانە بەسەر برد،

unable to attend Mom's funeral

نەیتوانی ئامادەیی پرسەکەی دایکم ببێت

and undergoing multiple, excruciating skin graft surgeries.

My sister and I stayed with a neighbor across the street,

but we would sit in front of their living room window for hours,

As a single father of two young girls,

Dad did his very best to provide for us

as we all tried to grieve and recover.

We began to move on in this new reality.

Dad bought a new house down the street, without a fireplace,

and eventually remarried.

My sister and I excelled in school.

I was a cheerleader,

and she rode horses and played in the band.

But nothing could stop the gut-wrenching nightmares that haunted me.

I would dream of fire,

of being trapped in fire with no escape.

the sheer panic and the pressure in my chest.

Or worse were the dreams where I was outside the fire watching it,

trying to save the people inside.

I'd wake up gasping for breath,

tears running down my face and sobbing.

When I was 15,

a friend of mine and a very talented artist,

painted two abstract portraits for me.

One was done in black and white

and depicted a scared girl cowering in the corner of a room,

shadows surrounding her.

The other was a bursting rainbow of color;

the girl was in the center of the page,

arms open and outstretched,

clearly full of joy and happiness.

He knew my past,

and he knew that I was conflicted and confused,

but he had also seen my potential

and wanted to show me what he already saw.

After a few years, I realized that these two portraits

showed two completely different paths before me:

a life of fear

or the promise and potential for recovery.

I had always been drawn to that brighter, more colorful painting,

هەمێشە سەرنجم بۆ ئەو تابلۆ درەوشاوە و ڕەنگاوڕەنگە ڕاکێشرابوو،

but I wasn't quite sure what it meant for me

بەڵام تەواو دڵنیا نەبووم ئەوە چ مانایەکی هەبوو بۆ من

or how to transform my current mentality into that kind of joy and happiness.

یان چۆن ئەو هزر و بیرکردنەوەی ئەوکاتم بگۆڕم بۆ ئەو جۆرە لە شادی و دڵخۆشییە.

So outwardly, I moved on with life --

ڕووکەشانە، لەگەڵ ژیان بەردەوام بووم --

graduated high school, went to college --

لە ئامادەیی دەرچووم و چووم بۆ زانکۆ--

while inwardly,

لە کاتێکدا لە ناخەوە،

I continued to bounce between the highest of highs

and the lowest of lows,

like a Ping-Pong ball between those two portraits.

In 2004, I went backpacking through Central America with a friend.

We spent our first week on the island of Roatán,

After a few days there, my friend and I realized

Neither of us had ever seen fire dancing before,

so one night, we decided to go see a show.

We watched, mesmerized,

I was completely entranced.

The next day, he offered to teach us how to fire dance, or "spin" --

without fire, of course.

بێگومان، بەبێ ئاگر.

He showed us the difference between a fire staff,

which is a long piece of wood or aluminum with two Kevlar wicks,

and fire poi, which are Kevlar wicks with chains and finger loops.

After that first time spinning poi,

I knew that this was a hobby that I wanted to continue learning

in the hopes that maybe one day,

I might be brave enough to try it with fire.

Now, I can guess what people might be thinking:

How was I not terrified and running in the opposite direction?

And honestly, I don't know.

I think that perhaps being a cheerleader and doing gymnastics and piano

while growing up,

these activities were very structured and prescribed,

my friend and I cobbled together our own sets of homemade poi

We did not light shoelaces and socks on fire,

It was terrifying.

Half of my brain was freaking out

and thinking, "OK, wait -- maybe we need to think about this.

The sound of the fire as it whooshed by my head

and brought me right back to my childhood.

The other half of my brain, the creative half, was thinking,

For anyone who spins,

there's a level of adrenaline

or that rush of fire dancing.

But as someone whose life had been so greatly impacted by fire,

I also felt an immense sense of empowerment

at being able to control and manipulate fire.

I made a conscious decision to step out of my grief.

It was not easy.

and that was exactly it.

I was in control of my sadness.

I knew what it would bring to me, and I knew what to expect,

but I also knew deep down that eventually,

I had to do that really hard work of trying to heal from my past.

دەبێت بەڕاستی ئەو کارە قورسە بکەم بۆ سارێژکردنەوەی ڕابردووم.

So I kept practicing.

بۆیە بەردەوام بووم لە ڕاهێنان.

I took a plastic grocery bag, cut it into strips,

کیسێکی پلاستیکی سەوزە و میوەم برد، کردم بە چەند پارچەیەکی درێژ و باریک،

tied it to the ends of those poi

بە کۆتایی ئەو پڵیتە پۆیانەوە گرێم دا

and used it to replicate the sound of the fire as it went past my head.

بۆ دووبارەکردنەوەی دەنگی ئەو ئاگرەی، کە بە دەوری سەرمدا دەخولایەوە.

And I kept lighting the poi on fire.

و بەردەوام گڕم لە پڵیتی پۆیەکان بەردەدا.

At some point, something shifted.

لە قۆناغێکدا، شتێک گۆڕا.

My perspective on fire dancing changed

تێڕوانینم بۆ سەماکردن بە ئاگر گۆڕا

from something that I was apprehensive about

لە شتێک کە لێی دوو دڵ و نیگەران بووم

to something that brought me a sort of peace.

بۆ شتێک کە جۆرێک لە ئاشتی و ئارامی بۆ هێنام.

Without realizing it,

بەبێ هەست کردن و پێزانینی،

I had initiated my own form of exposure therapy,

دەستم کردبوو بە شێوازێکی خۆم لە چارسەرکردن بە ڕووبەڕوو بوونەوە،

an actual type of psychotherapy

کە جۆرێکی ڕاستەقینەیە لە چارەسەری دەروونی

where you deliberately expose yourself to things that have caused you trauma

کە تێیدا بەمەبەست خۆت دەخەیتە بەردەم ئەو شتانەی بوونەتە هۆکاری کۆستی دەروونیت

or scare you.

I'd exposed myself to fire in this very unique way

من خۆم خستە بەردەم ئاگر بەم ڕێگا تایبەتی و ناوازەیە

and had transformed what it meant to me.

و ئەو شتەی گۆڕی کە واتای هەبوو بۆ من.

My nightmares slowed down

کابوس و خەوە ناخۆشەکانم هێور بوونەوە

and now, years later, have stopped almost completely.

و ئێستا، دوای ساڵانێک بە نزیکەیی خەوە ناخۆشەکانم تەواو وەستاون.

I started fire dancing not just for myself but at events and performances.

تەنها بۆخۆم ئەو سەمای ئاگرەم ئەنجام نەدا، بەڵکو بۆ بۆنە و نمایشەکانیش بوو.

I started a fire troop with friends while living in Dubai,

دەستم کرد بە سەمایی ئاگری بە کۆمەڵ لەگەڵ هاوڕێکانم کاتێ لە دوبەی دەژیام،

created beautiful art with my sister who became a photographer,

هونەرێکی جوانم داهێنا لەگەڵ خوشکم کە بووە وێنەگر،

taught children how to spin at birthday parties,

منداڵەکانم فێردەکرد کە چۆن لە ڕۆژی لە دایک بوونیاندا بخولێنەوە،

performed onstage and at festivals

نواندن لەسەر تەختی شانۆ و لە ڤیستیڤاڵەکاندا بکەن

and even taught my own children the basics of spinning.

و تەنانەت منداڵەکانی خۆشم فێری بنەماکانی خولانەوە کردن.

And that's not to say

و ئەوەش واتای ئەوە نییە

that I don't still have an apprehension to fire in general.

کە هێشتا ترس و نیگەرانیم نییە لە ئاگر بە گشتی.

I can practice a move a million times,

دەتوانم ملیۆنێک جار ڕاهێنان لەسەر یەک جوڵە بکەم،

but then when I try it with fire,

بەڵام دواتر کە لەگەڵ ئاگر تاقی دەکەمەوە،

I feel that familiar panic and tightening in my chest.

هەست بە ترسێکی ئاشنا و توند بوونی سینگم دەکەم.

I'm still apprehensive about living in a two-story house

تا ئێستاش دەترسێم کە لە خانویەکی دوو نهۆمیدا بژیم

or having a fireplace.

یان لە خانویەک کە ئاگردانی لێ بێت.

Every night before I go to sleep,

هەمووشەوێک پێش ئەوەی بخەوم،

I clear a path between my kids' bedroom doors,

ڕێگایەک دەکەمەوە لە نێوان دەرگای ژووری نوستنی منداڵەکانم،

our bedroom door

دەرگای ژووری نوستنەکەمان،

and all the exit doors,

و هەموو دەرگاکانی چوونەدەرەوە،

in case we need to leave quickly.

بۆ ئەوەی ئەگەر پێویستمان پێبوو خێرا بڕۆین،

And it's taken me a long time

و ئەوەش کاتێکی زۆری لێ بردووم

to get on board with the idea of closing bedroom doors at night

هەتا ڕاهاتووین لەگەڵ بیرۆکەی داخستنی دەرگای ژوری نوستن لە شەواندا

to slow down a fire,

بۆ هێواش کردنەوەی ئاگر،

because I'd always thought if I closed my kids' bedroom doors,

چونکە هەمیشە وا بیرم کردۆتەوە ئەگەر دەرگای ژووری منداڵەکانم دابخەم،

I might not be able to hear them like my mom heard me.

ڕەنگە نەتوانم گوێم لە دەنگیان بێت وەک چۆن دایکم گوێی لە دەنگم بوو.

And of course, this is my story.

و بە دڵنیاییەوە، ئەوە چیرۆکەکەمە.

I can't say that I have the answer

ناتوانم بڵێم کە چارەسەرەکەم پێیە

for someone with a different kind of trauma.

بۆ کەسێک کە بە دەست کۆستێکی دەروونی جیاوازەوە دەناڵێنێت.

If the situation had been reversed,

ئەگەر دۆخەکە پێچەوانە بووبایەوە،

and I'd lost a child in a fire,

و من منداڵێکم لە ناو ئاگر لە دەست دابا،

I'm not sure that fire dancing would be the answer,

دڵنیانیم لەوەی کە سەمایی ئاگر ببێتە چارەسەرەکە،

or if I'd even have the capacity to get near fire again.

یان تەنانەت ئەگەر دووبارە توانایی نزیک بوونەوەم هەبێت لە ئاگر.

But what I can say from my own experience

بەڵام ئەوەی دەتوانم بیڵێم لە ئەزموونی خۆمەوە

is that after experiencing a trauma or hardship,

ئەوەیە کە دوای ئەزمونکردنی کۆستێکی دەروونی یان تەنگ و چەڵەمەیەک،

you have a choice between two paths.

تۆ بژاردەیەکت هەیە لە نێوان دوو ڕێگادا.

One path will lead you to a life of fear and cowering in the darkness,

ڕێگایەکیان بەرەو ژیانێکی پڕ لە ترس و شێواوی لە تاریکیدا دەتبات،

like that black-and-white painting I described earlier.

وەک ئەو تابلۆ ڕەش و سپیەیی پێشتر باسم کرد.

You might move on with life, but at the same time,

دەتوانیت بەردەوام بیت لە ژیان، بەڵام لە هەمان کاتدا،

you're still clinging to that sadness that brings you comfort.

تا ئێستاش بەو خەمەوە گرێدراویت کە ئاسودەیت بۆ دەهێنێت.

The other path, stepping out of grief,

ڕێگەکەیتر، بریتییە لە خۆ ڕزگارکردن لە خەم و خەفەت،

will not change or undo anything.

هیچ شتێک نە دەگۆڕێت و نە هەڵدەوەشێنێتەوە.

It will be hard.

ئەوە کارێکی سەخت دەبێت.

It will always be hard,

هەمیشە کارێکی سەخت دەبێت،

with high mountains and deep, dark valleys.

لەگەڵ چیا بەرز و دۆڵە قوڵ و تاریکەکان.

But this path looks forward and moves forward.

بەڵام ئەم ڕێگەیە بۆ پێشەوە دەڕوانێت و بەرەو پێشەوە دەڕوات.

When I learned to dance with fire,

کاتێک فێری سەماکردن بووم بە ئاگر،

I learned to reconcile the traumatic part of my life

فێربووم کە ئاشتەوایی لەو بەشە بە ئازارەی ژیانم دروست بکەم

with the totality of my life as it was still unfolding.

لەگەڵ تەواوی ژیانم چونکە هەتا ئەوکات زیاتر دەردەکەوت و ئاشکرا دەبوو.

Fire became more than just trauma

ئاگر بوو بە شتێکی گەورەتر لە کۆستی دەروونی

but beauty and art as well,

بەڵام بە جوانی و هونەریش،

everything, all at once, just like life,

هەمووشتێک، بەیەک جار ڕێک وەک ژیان،

flickering and smoldering

پرتە پرتی دەکرد و وردە وردە دەپوکایەوە

and burning and dazzling,

هەروەها دەسوتا و دەدرەوشایەوە،

and somehow, in the middle of it, finding a way to dance ...

و شێوازێک، لە ناوەڕاستی کاتەکەدا، ڕێگایەکی دەدۆزییەوە بۆ سەماکردن ...
