PA: What I saw was an artist committed to truth and justice --

and she's beautiful, but I digress.

AM: Our story actually begins across many worlds,

over maqluba and red wine in Palestine.

But how did we get there?

PA: Well, I was born in Chicago,

the son of a preacher and a teacher.

My ears first rung with church songs sung by my mother on Saturday mornings.

فأول ما كان يرنُ على مسامعي أغاني الكنيسة التي كانت تترنّم بها أمّي صباح كل سبت

My father's South Side sermons summoned me.

وجذبتني مواعظُ أبي من الجنوب

My first words were more notes than quotes.

It was music that molded me.

فالموسيقا هي التي شكّلتني.

Later on, it was Florida A&M University that first introduced me to organizing.

وعرّفتني جامعة "فلوريدا" (A&M) فيما بعدها إلى التّنظيم.

In 2012, a young black male named Trayvon Martin was murdered,

في عام 2012، قٌتلَ شابٌ أسود البشرة يٌدعى "تريفون مارتين"

and it changed my life and millions of others'.

We were a ragtag group of college kids and not-quite adults

who had decided enough was enough.

Art and organizing became our answer to anger and anxiety.

We built a movement and it traveled around the world

and to Palestine, in 2015.

AM: I was born to a single mother

in the Pink House projects of Brooklyn, New York.

Maddened by survival,

مدفوعةً بجنون العيش،

I gravitated inwards towards books, poems and my brother's hand-me-down Walkman.

انجذبتُ نحوَ الكتبِ والقصائد وجهاز استماعِ أخي المستعمل.

I saw train-station theater,

فلقد رأيتُ مسارحَ محطّاتِ القطار

subwoofing streets and hood murals.

In high school, I found a community of metaphor magicians

وجدتُ في المدرسةِ الثانويّة مجتمعاً من السّحرة المجازيين

and truth-telling poets

in an organization called Urban Word NYC.

في منظّمةٍ تدعى "Urban Word NYC"

Adopted by the Black Arts movement,

I won the legendary Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam title.

At Sarah Lawrence College, I worked with artists

عملتُ في جامعة "Sarah Lawrence" مع عدّة فنّانين

to respond to Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake;

I discovered the impact of poetry

فقد اكتشفتُ تأثيرَ الشّعر

and the ability to not just articulate our feelings,

والقدرةَ التي لا تنحصرُ في التّعبيرِ عنِ المشاعرِ فقط،

but to get us to work towards changing things

بل التي تجعلُنا نعملُ أيضاً نحو تغييرِ الأشياء

and doing something about it,

when a friend, Maytha Alhassen, invited me to Palestine ...

PA: We were a delegation of artists and organizers,

"فيليب" : كنّا وفداً من الفنّانين والمنظّمين

and we immersed ourselves in Palestinian culture,

وقد انغمسنا في الثّقافة الفلسطينيّة

music, their stories.

موسيقاهم وقِصصهم

Late into the night,

حتى في وقتٍ متأخرٍ من الليل

we would have discussions about the role of art in politics

أدرنا نقاشاتٍ حولَ دور الفنّ في السياسة

and the role of politics in art.

ودورِ السّياسةِ في الفن.

Aja and I disagree.

لم أتّفق بالرأيِ مع "آجا"

AM: Oh, we disagree.

"أجا": نعم، أُؤكّد ذلك.

PA: But we quite quickly and unsurprisingly fell in love.

"فيليب": إلا أنّه بسرعةٍ كبيرة، وكما هو متوقّع، لقد وقعنا في الحب

Four months later, this artist --

PA: and this organizer --

AM: moved into a little home with a big backyard, in Miami.

Listen, five months before this ever happened,

حسناً، قبل خمسةِ أشهرٍ من حدوثِ كلّ هذا

I predicted it all.

كنتُ قد تنبّأثُ به كلّه، وسأخبركم كيف.

I'm going to tell you --

جلستُ مع صديقٍ لي للتحدّث فقال:

a friend sat me down and said,

"You've done so much for organizing,

"لقد قدّمتَ الكثيرَ من أنشطةِ التنظيم،

when are you going to settle down?"

متى ستستقرّ؟"

أمعنتُ النّظر إليه، فقلت:

I looked him straight in the face

and I said, "The only way that it would ever happen

is if it is a collision.

This woman would have to knock me completely off course."

I didn't know how right I was.

Our first few months were like any between young lovers:

filled with hot, passionate, all-night ...

AM: nonstop ...

PA: discussions.

PA: Aja challenged everything I knew and understood about the world.

She forced me --

AM: lovingly --

PA: to see our organizing work with new eyes.

"فيليب": على النظر إلى عملنا التنظيمي من منحى جديد

She helped me see the unseen things

فلقد ساعدتني على رؤية مالم أكن أراه

and how artists illuminate our interior worlds.

وكيف يمكنُ للفنّانين أن ينيروا عالمنا الداخلي.

AM: There were many days I did not want to get up out of bed

"آجا": كانت هنالك الكثيرُ من الأيّام التي لم أرغب فيها أن أتركَ فراشي

and face the exterior world.

وأن أواجهَ العالم الخارجيّ.

I was discouraged.

كنتُ محبطةً

There was so much loss and death

فكانَ هناك الكثيرُ من الخسائرِ والوفيّات

and artists were being used to numb, lull and exploit.

والفنّانون يُستغلّون بغرض التخديرِ والتهدئة.

While winning awards, accolades and grants soothed so many egos,

على الرّغم من أن الفوزَ بالجوائز والأوسمة والمنح يهدّئُ الكثير من الغرور،

people were still dying

ما زالَ هناك أناسٌ يموتون

and I was seeking community.

وأنا كنتُ ألتمسُ المجتمع.

Meeting Phillip brought so much joy, love, truth into my life,

فقد جلبت ليَ مقابلة "فيليب" الكثير من الفرح والحبّ والحقيقةِ إلى حياتي،

and it pulled me out of isolation.

وأخرجتني من العُزلة.

He showed me that community and relationships

بيّن "فيليب" لي أنّ المجتمعاتِ والعلاقات

wasn't just about building great movements.

لا تتعلّق بتأسيسِ تيّاراتٍ كبيرةٍ وحسب

It was integral in creating powerful, meaningful art,

بل هي جزءٌ متأصّلٌ لابتداعِ فنٍّ معبّرٍ ومؤثّر

and neither could be done in solitude.

ولا يمكنُ لأحدٍ منهما أن يُزدهر بمعزلٍ عن الآخر.

PA: Yeah, we realized many of our artist and organizer friends were also lost

"فيليب": أجل، فلقد أدركنا أنّ العديدَ من أصدقائنا الفنانين والمنظمّين كانوا منهمكين

in these cycles of sadness,

في الأحداثِ الحزينة هذه.

and we were in movements that often found themselves at funerals.

We asked ourselves

what becomes of a generation all too familiar

with the untimely ends of lives streamed daily on our Timelines?

It was during one of our late-night discussions

خلال أحدِ نقاشاتنا الّليلية المتأخرة،

that we saw beyond art and organizing

تأمّلنا في ما وراءِ الفنّ والتنظيم

and began to see that art was organizing.

وبدأنا نرى أنّ الفنّ كانَ بالفعلِ هو التنظيم.

AM: The idea was set:

"آجا": وكانتِ الفكرةُ كالآتي:

art was an anchor, not an accessory to movement.

إنّ الفنَّ ريكزة، وليسَ شيئاً ثانويّاً في التّنظيمات،

Our home was a home of radical imagination;

فمنزلنا كان داراً للخيالِ المتطرّف

an instrument of our nurturing hearts;

ووسيلةً لتغذيةِ قلوبنا

a place of risk where were dared to laugh, love, cry, debate.

مكانٌ للخروجِ عن المألوف، فنضحكُ ونبكي ونناقشُ ونُحب

Art, books, records and all this stuff decorated our walls,

فالفنّ والكتبُ والمخطوطات وكلّ هذه الأشياء زيّنت حوائطنا

and there was lizards --

وكانت هنالك السّحالي

walls of palm trees that guided our guests into our backyard,

وأشجارُ النخيل الممتدّة التي ترشدُ ضيوفنا نحوَ باحتنا الخلفيّة،

where our neighbors would come and feel right at home.

حيثُ هذا المكانُ هو بمثابةِ منزلٍ لكلّ جيراننا ومن أتاه.

The wind --

والرّياح

the wind was an affirmation for the people who walked into the space.

الرّياحُ كانت تأكيداً لأولئك الذين سَبَحوا في الفضاء،

And we learned that in a world --

وأدركنا شيئاً:

أنّه في عالمٍ محيّرٍ كهذا، مكتظٍ ومحفوفٍ بالإلهاءات،

a bewildering world of so much distraction --

we were able to cultivate a space where people could come and be present,

أمكننا إنشاءُ مكانٍ لنشاركه، وليأتي النّاسُ إليه

and artists and organizers could find refuge.

وليستطيعَ الفنّانون والمنظّمون أن يجدوا فيه ملاذاً.

PA: This became Smoke Signals Studio.

"فيليب": صارَ هذا المكان استوديو Smoke Signals

AM: As we struggle to clothe, house, feed and educate our communities;

"آجا": فمثلما نكافحُ من أجل كسوة مجتمعاتنا وإيجاد المأوى والطّعام والتّعليم لها

our spirits hunger for connection, joy and purpose;

فأرواحنا متعطّشةٌ لأهدافها ومتعتها وتواصلها.

and as our bodies are out on the front lines,

وكما أنّ أجسادنا على المحكّ في الواجهة،

our souls still need to be fed,

فأرواحنا لا تزالُ بحاجةٍ الى الغذاء،

or else we succumb to despair and depression.

وإلّا فإننا نستسلمُ لليأسِ والإحباط.

Our art possesses rhythmic communication,

يمتلكُ فنّنا تواصلاً إيقاعيّاً

coded emotional cues,

ودلالاتٍ عاطفيةٍ مشفّرة

improvised feelings of critical thought.

ومشاعرَ مرتجلةٍ للتفكيرِ الناقد.

Our social movements should be like jazz:

يجبُ أن تكونَ تنظيماتنا الاجتماعيّة مثل موسيقا الجاز

encouraging active participation,

مشجّعةً على المشاركةِ الفعّالة

listening,

والإنصات

spontaneity and freedom.

والعفويّة والحرية.

What people see as a party ...

ما يراهُ النّاسُ على أنّه احتفال

PA: is actually a movement meeting.

See, we aren't all protest and pain.

لم نكُن جميعنا محتجّين أو في ضيق.

Here's a place to be loved,

ها هي الفسحةُ لتشعرَ بالحبّ،

to be felt, to be heard,

ولنستمعَ إليك ونشعرَ بك،

and where we prepare for the most pressing political issues

في مكانٍ نُعدُ فيه أنفُسنا للقضايا السياسيّة الأكثرِ أهميّة

in our neighborhoods.

في مناطقنا.

See, laws never change culture,

إنّ القوانينَ لا تُغيّر من الثّقافة على الإطلاق،

but culture always changes laws.

Art as organizing is even changing and opening doors

in places seen as the opposite of freedom.

In 2018, we created our first annual Maroon Poetry Festival

There, the Last Poets, Sonia Sanchez, Emory Douglas

and the late, great Ntozake Shange,

performed and met with local artists and organizers.

We were able to honor them

for their commitment to radical truth-telling.

PA: Our work is in a long line of cultural organizers

that understood to use art to animate a radical future.

Artists like June Jordan,

They understood what many of us are just now realizing --

AM: Now thousands of Floridians across age, race, gender and class

see the "Freedom Papers" as a vision for the future of their lives.

For decades, our artists and our art has been used to exploit,

lull, numb,

sell things to us

and to displace our communities,

but we believe that the personal is political

and the heart is measured by what is done,

And so art as organizing is not just concerned with artists' intentions,

Great art is not a monologue.

PA: Four years ago, this artist ...

PA: found that we were not just a match.

AM: We were a mirror.

PA: Our worlds truly did collide,

and in many ways ...

How we weathered and persisted,

عن صمودِنا ودأبنا

نحاول بكلّ ما أوتينا به من قوة.

How we witnessed the horror of mankind

شهدنا الرّعبَ من أبناء جنسنا،

and did not become that which horrified us.

ولكنّنا لم نتحولّ إليه.
